Gas Turbines & Aircraft Propulsion – SESSION 8

Reduced Variables – Part II

Exercise 1

A compressor is examined on a testbed under ISA SLS conditions. The inlet and nozzle positioned
respectively upstream and downstream of the compressor, may be considered as lossless. Using
the characteristics of the compressor presented on p. 2, determine the compressor operating point
if the nozzle exit cross-section is 0.0435 m2 and the compressor rotational speed 6790 RPM.

Exercise 2

Consider a stationary single-shaft gas turbine. The figure on p. 3 reflects some important perfor-
mance characteristics of the compressor. In addition, assume that the following invariable (re-
duced) operating characteristics rule over the turbine:
p h kg K1/2 i
ṁ T t 3
= 139.0 = Ct (8.1)
pt3 bar s
η i s,T = 0.87 [−] (8.2)

Calculate (numerically or graphically) the T I T for a net delivered power of 3800 kW, while assum-
ing 1013 hPa and 288 K for the atmospherical conditions, a mechanical efficiency of 98% and no
pressure losses.

Exercise 3

A Boeing 747 departing from an airport where a pressure altitude of 4 000ft and a temperature of
ISA+25◦ C were measured, enters the initial climb condition. Relevant information for this flight
condition has been excerpted from the aircraft’s operations manual and is put on p. 4. The aircraft
flies at 300 KIAS. Consider a perfect inlet.

1. Check wether the engine core nozzle is choked.

2. Calculate the primary flow exhaust gas velocity v j ,p .

In addition, use:

nh γ − 1 ³ V ´2 γ
EGT C AS
i γ−1 o
= 700K ∆p = p sl · +1 −1
θt 2 1.057 2 a sl
