Cell phones in Education

Activity description

This lesson will be presented using Microsoft PowerPoint. The lesson will
outline the uses of the cell phone by educators and students. The
participants will be polled on different questions. The polling questions
should be answered by raising hands, speaking through their microphones, or
typing in yes/no. There will be some instances where participants will answer
by writing their answer on the eboard or typing in the responses. There are
several instances in this lessons that participants will have to reply so the
facilitator will be able to assess their understanding and knowledge on the
given topics.

Extension idea

Have participants discuss the use of cell phones in education with their
friends and students. They should ask important questions to see who may
be for and who may be against cell phones in the classroom. Participants
should find out why that person feel the way they do. The answers should be
sent via text message, but created from a cell phone or email account.

Teaching tips

Have students send text messages using SMS language.

Inform participants how important conduct is in the classroom. They should

make sure that the code of conduct is being demonstrated at all times. This
will ensure that they are protected in case someone may be capturing a
video/or picture of them without their knowledge.

Educators should learn how to monitor their class to prevent the

inappropriate use of cell phones.

Educators may want to use different assessment activities to prevent

cheating through the use of cell phones. Students may be required to turn
cell phones in when they enter class and they may be returned when
educators feel they need to use them.

EXTRA

The presentation will ask certain questions like, when reading a text message
and it reads “LOL” what is meant by the statement? Participants will either
type their answers in or write the answer or the eboard. We will then discuss
the answers and talk about the given responses. Participants will be asked
certain questions and they will respond by raising their hands if they have
ever sent a text message, the next question will ask, “have you ever used a
cell phone while in class?” Participants should answer yes or no.
