Subject : Electrical and Electronics Measurements Max. Marks : 100
Subject Code : EE42/EE402 Duration : 3 Hrs

Instructions to the Candidates:

 Answer one full question from each unit.

UNIT – I

1. a) Derive the dimensional equation for (i) Reluctance (ii) Conductivity and CO1 (06)
(iii) Resistance from fundamentals in S.I system of units.
b) With relevant diagrams explain how you measure inductance using CO1 (06)
Maxwell’s bridge.
c) The values of various arms of a wheatstone bridge are p=1000Ω, CO1 (08)

negligible internal resistance. The galvanometer has acurrent sensitivity of
10mm/µA and an internal resistance of 100Ω. Calculate the deflection of
galvanometer and the sensitivity of the bridge in terms of deflection per
unit change in resistance.

2. a) The energy stored in a parallel plate capacitor per unit volume is given by CO1 (08)
W=K ℰaVbdc where ℰ=permittivity of the medium, d=distance between
plates, V=voltage between plates, K=constant. Find the values of a, b and
c.
b) What are the limitations of Kelvin double bridge? CO1 (06)
c) Derive the balance equation of Kelvin double bridge and hence obtain an CO1 (06)
expression for the unknown low resistance under measurement.

UNIT – II

3. a) A moving coil instrument gives a full scale deflection of 10mA when the CO2 (06)
potential difference across its terminals is 100mV. Calculate (i) the shunt
resistance for a full scale deflection corresponding to 100A, (ii) the series
resistance for full scale reading with 1000V. Calculate the power
dissipation in each case.
b) Write a brief note on the balance detectors commonly used in AC bridges. CO2 (06)
c) Derive the expression for transformation ratio and phase angle from CO2 (08)
equivalent circuit and phasor diagram of a current transformer for a
lagging load.

4. a) What is the necessity of Shielding of bridges? With suitable figures explain CO2 (06)
how the stray capacitance of two resistors in series is controlled by means
of shielding.
b) What are the special features of High Voltage Schering bridge? CO2 (06)

phase angle when supplying rated output to a meter having a ratio of
resistance to reactance of 5.(Take the turns ratio equal to nominal ratio).

UNIT – III
5. a) What is a Q-meter? Explain the working of a basic Q-meter circuit. CO3 (06)
b) Explain with neat diagram, construction and working of Weston frequency CO3 (06)
meter.
c) Explain with a block diagram the working of a true RMS responding CO3 (08)
voltmeter.

6. a) Compare electronic and electromechanical instruments. CO3 (06)

b) What are the different types of digital voltmeters? Explain any one of CO3 (06)
them with block diagram.
c) What is PF meter? Explain its construction and operation. CO3 (08)

UNIT – IV

7. a) Explain with the principle of working of electronic energy meter. CO4 (06)
b) A 230 V, single phase, watthour meter has a constant load of 4A passing CO4 (06)
through it for 6 hours at unity power factor. If the meter disc makes 2208
revolutions during this period, what is the meter constant in revolutions
per KWH. Calculate the power factor of the load if the revolutions made
by the meter are 1472 when operating at 230V and 5A for 4 hours.
c) Discuss the errors that occur in the wattmeters. CO4 (08)

8. a) List out the adjustments that are to be carried out in the energy meters to CO4 (06)
get the errors within the allowable limits.
