Abstract:
Catalytic sensor bed in oil and gas applications require the solution of a system of coupled partial differential
equations (PDEs). In most cases, the analytic PDE solution does not exist for this system and we need to solve the problem
numerically using the finite element method. In the present paper, the mathematical modeling of catalytic sensor kinetics is
discussed. By applying numerical method to solve the coupled nonlinear time-dependent reaction - diffusion equations. A
numerical simulation is reported using COMSOL Multiphysics software program and MATLAB. The numerical solution
for the concentration profiles of the reactive and product have been derived for different values of the Thiele modulus
number.

Essential results
- Catalytic sensor bed in oil and gas applications require the solution of a system of coupled nonlinear time-
dependent reaction - diffusion equations
- Catalytic sensor bed in oil and gas applications require the solution of a system of coupled partial differential
equations (PDEs) : PDE4 in MATLAB
- Results shows us how powerful the COMSOL Multiphysics in solving mathematical kinetic sensor numerically
- COMSOL Multiphysics results are compared with the numerical results using Matlab program found to be in
good agreement
- The most important parameter is Thiele modulus; the quantity is a measure of the ratio of surface reaction rate to
the rate of diffusion through the catalyst bed
When the Thiele modulus is large, internal diffusion usually limits the overall rate of reaction; when
Thiele modulus is small, the surface reaction is usually rate limiting.
