Describe how you would help a student:

|trengthen impulse control

Develop ability to sit and attend for longer periods of time

ocus on task at hand

In order to help the child focus on task at hand, I would surround that child by children that are

able to help demonstrate positive attentive skills. This would help show that child what it is that

he needs to do and if he gets off task then he will be able to look around at the other students

directly next to him and see what needs to be done. If the child needed more, I would give him

simple cues about what it is he needs to be working on. |o if he was suppose to be coloring

shapes and I think he might be starting to get off task, I would ask him what color are you going

to color the shape, and this should prompt him to stay on task.

|ome ways that I could strength impulse control would be to encourage him to use words to

describe how he is feeling. |o if someone takes something from him and instead of hitting the

person, I would encourage him to tell that person that taking his toy makes him feel sad. Make

it clear that hurting others is not allowed. When he child gets mad playing a game and pushes

or hits another child, take him aside and remind him that hurting others is not allowed. Help
him think of new ways to solve problems. When he has a disagreement with another child,

suggest solutions such as taking turns or sharing. Respond to his misbehavior with words. When

you tell him the reasons behind rules and explain the consequences for misbehavior, this will

help him develop inner control on his behavior. Model self-control when dealing with stress or

frustration. The child learns many behaviors from observing you. When you model self-

discipline and self-control in difficult situations, he will learn to follow your example.

One way to help develop the child to be able to sit for longer periods of time, is just to start

with short periods. Have the child help with something, like going to get milk, for the first part

of circle time and have him join for the last five or so minutes. Praise him for being able to sit

the whole time, and each day or week, tack on a minute or so. This will help the child to learn

how to sit a little at a time, until he is able to sit the whole circle time.
