Chapter I
CHRIST THE KING COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Introduction

Professional educators know very well that the word Learning implies

both teaching and learning. It is the process of facilitating learning Knowledge,

skills, values, beliefs, and habits of a group of people are transferred to other

people, through storytelling, discussion, teaching, training, or research.

Education frequently takes place under the guidance of educators, but learners

may also educate themselves in a process called autodidactic learning any

experience that has a formative effect on the way one thinks, feels, or acts may

be considered educational. Education is commonly and formally divided into stages

such as preschool, primary school, secondary school and thencollege, university or

apprenticeship.

The methodology of teaching is called pedagogy. Working students are

those students who work outside the school and having a school responsibility

too. Students have so many reasons to work outside at home. One of these is

that they want to help their parents in earning money to meet the needs of their

family. These may include their everyday needs such as food, shelter, clothing and

education. Others want to work because they feel bored at home and by means of

working they will able to amuse themselves. 0omehow the others works for their

personal interests. That is they want to use what they have acquired in school and feel

fulfilled just to apply whatever knowledge they have gained in the past.

Money or financial gain is not the main issue but simply expression of self-

fulfillment. Students who are engaged in a job have to carry out their duties and

responsibilities both as students and worker in order to maintain school and company

relationships Student who had stayed at home with their parents were often eager to

get any job. Some really needed extra income and others wanted to reestablish

communication skills with adults and have something to make them busy. The

successful working students have examined their goals and priorities before they

entered into the field of work .The researcher pushed to conduct this study because of

his curiosity on how working students cope their school duties and responsibilities

while having apart time job.

Background of the study

This study deals with the Level of Academic Performance of the Working

Students of Christ The King College of Science and Technology, Selected working

students in Christ The King College of Science and Technology. The problem is what

factors that working students affect their academic performance. And one of the

negative effects typically a rise because hours spent at work take time away from

studying which may lead to lower grades and less attractive post college

opportunities. And one of the choices to address and act on the problem is to balance

work and study to help them succeed in college. This study serves as the basis to

discover other factor to enhance students’ performance.

There are some obvious advantage to this work approach from finishing

school more quickly to maintain the current job and the associated income and

benefit. Just be aware that by choosing to study and work full time, you are

essentially signing themselves up for few very hectic years. Working full time while

also studying fulltime clearly requires a lot of effort. putting so much of their mental

and physical energy into this uneasy arrangement can quickly leave that feeling

fatigued, stressed or both .while many grad students and workers routinely feel

tired and stressed by their work , as a full time student worker you will likely

encounter stress and fatigue level well beyond those most of your colleagues.

Perhaps for the first time in their life ,students may find themselves planning and

accounting for every day , from the few hours you can block off for sleep to the 30

minutes of their commute their lunch break (both may become extra time for

studying )

Statement of the Problem

This study aim to determine the Level of Academic Performance of the Working
Students on Christ The King College of Science and Technology during the School
Year 2019-2020.

1 . What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1 Age?

1.2 Gender?

1.3 General Average?

2 . How to improve the academic performance of the selected working

students as regard to:

2.1 Learning skills

2.2 Study skills

3. Is there a significant relationship between the academic performance of

the respondents and profile of the students?

The paradigm for this study has three part and these are the following: the input, in
which the respondent's profile: age, gender, general average, how to improve
academic performance in terms of: Learning skills,....

This study was guided by a Coomb’s System Approach utilizing the

input, process and output model. The first frame refers to the input which includes the
working students as respondents of the study described in terms of age, sex, and
sibling position, parents educational attainment, monthly family income, and academic
performance.

The second frame refers to the construction and validation of questionnaires on

the levels of academic performance of working student. Data gathering, analysis and
interpretation of data.

The third frame refers to the output of the study which is a plan of action to
enhance the academic performance of working students in Christ The King College of
Science and Technology School. The line from output frame connecting process and
input presents feedback. It indicates that whatever will be the output or the response
may get, this means that there is a continous process.

Theoritical Framework

According to Rajeev Darolias’s study there was a correlation between

number of credits completed and number of hours worked per week. This
study states that 80 percent of students work at some point in their
undergraduate program and numbers of hours worked per week increases each
year. Some students take fewer credits due to work commitments. Part-time and full-
time students tend to spend less time studying (Darolia, 2014). This can lead to
delayed graduation dates and more debt from more years of schooling. The time-to-
degree ratio is higher, which in turn costs the students less future earnings. The study
points out the negative effect of working to be lack of time for school-based activities
and leisure activities, which can help with overall health (Darolia, 2014).

These articles helped by guiding us to ask questions about how many

hours the participants work per week and how many credits they were taking.
Then, we can correlate their hours of work to their grade point average,
(GPA). This is to see if lower intensity work would aid or hinder academic
performance.
Darolia, R. (2014). Working (and studying) day and night: Heterogeneous effects of
working on the academic performance of full-time and part-time students.Economics
of Education Review,38, 38-50. doi:10.1016/j.econedurev.2013.10.004

HYPOTHESIS

1. There is no significant relationship between the academic performace of the

respondents and the profile of the students.

2. A majority of student they tend to spend fewer hours studying while spending
more hours working, some even full time.

3. There’s no significant difference on the level of academic performance of the

working students on class participation, task performance and comprehension.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS

The Present study and the profile and the academic performance of the working
students of Christ The King College School S.Y 2019-2020. This study limits only
students who are currently enrolled and who are also working and also previously
working. Only those working students are allowed to participate in the research.

The Researcher limits their study by giving questionnaire to the 10 working

students of DCCS. The academic performance of working students did not affect due
to time management, they can balance their study while working they still have time
to study.
