Synthesis Lab
The content in this lab report will be about the experiment that we were mixing the solution A, B and
C into the beaker and filtration it by filter paper. Then, we put it into the oven and then weigh it
afterward.
Introduction
In this lab, we have to mix 2.5 grams of Solution A, which is Copper(II) sulfate with 0.2 grams of
Solution B, which is Sodium hydroxide. Also 2.5 grams of Solution A, Copper(II) sulfate and 0.6 grams
of Solution C, which is Sodium hydroxide. The point of this experiment is to make a Copper
hydroxide by mixed the solution given above. For the Solution A mixed with B, we get blue while
Solution A and C, we get clear color.
Object
The objective of this lab is to create a copper hydroxide. And to see whether or not we are able to
create the right amount by using the percent yield.
- 100 mL beaker
- 50 mL graduate cylinder
- Stirring rod
- Filter paper
- Weighing paper
- Spatula
- Watch glass
- Funnel
- Ring stand & clamp
2. Mix mixture A and B in the beaker, then stir for 2-3 min
5. Put the filter paper with the solution into the oven
Discussion
The color of filtrate of both reactions are different because it used different substance Solution A is
CuSO4, Solution B is NaOH and Solution C is NaOH. Solution B and Solution C is the same substance
but have different mass Solution B is 0.6 but Solution C is 0.2 so that when it mixed up together it
will be a different color. The mixture of mass in Solution A and Solution B are 1.91 g, The mixture of
mass in Solution A and Solution C are 2.06 g.
Calculations
Conclusion
To conclude, in this lab we mix solutions to make Copper hydroxide, with 2 solutions, which are
Copper(II) sulfate and Sodium hydroxide. We use different weight of Sodium hydroxide to see the
different, we use 0.2 grams and 0.6 grams.
During the lab we also notice that there is a bubble in the solution. We think it is a soap from when
the other class wash the beaker and this might be the reason why the % yield is quite off. So we
think the result is not correct.
