Section 1. Context

Bengaluru City founded by Kempegowda about four centuries ago is the current capital of
Karnataka state. Earlier the city was known as Pensioner’s Paradise, but now it is more
often known as Silicon Valley of India with major IT industries. It is one of the fastest growing
metropolis in the world. Therefore to decongest some of the important railway stations in
Bengaluru like Bengaluru City Jn. (main terminal) and Yashwantpur Jn. (second coaching
terminal), Baiyappanahalli will be the third coaching terminal. The proposed third terminal
site is located towards east of Bengaluru city (about 10 km from CBD). The site is accessible
through Baiyappanahalli road towards west, connecting Banaswadi road in north and old
Madras road in south. Outer ring road of Bengaluru city is about 3 km from site towards east.
Existing Baiyappanahalli Railway Station of Bengaluru has a small station building with only
two platforms. Proposed third coaching terminal site is towards the north-west of existing
station building. Presently this location is functioning as goods yard on main Chennai-
Bengaluru line. Unlike other stations of this International Design Competition,
Baiyappanahalli Station is more of a Green field development. Baiyappanahalli metro station
and metro depot is also located near the railway station. The metro station is connected with
the existing Railway Station via a foot over bridge.

Section 3. Objectives of Station Redevelopment

The Proposed Station Redevelopment aims at upgrading the railway station facility to the
international standards. Following are the broad objectives:

1. Creating opportunity for regeneration of the site and surrounding areas.

2. Ensuring adequate access and connectivity, while encouraging sustainable transit
friendly environment.
3. Ensuring smooth and conflict free movement of passengers inside the station as well
as around it.
4. Ensuring ease of transfer between various modes of transport opted by railway
passengers.
5. Exploring commercial potential at developable land parcels to ensure optimum land
value capture.
6. Integrating the existing private retail and commercial areas in and around the site
with the proposed scheme.
7. For areas, where redevelopment of existing building is proposed, the existing use
has to be either rehabilitated within the proposed scheme or suitable relocation shall
be proposed. The same shall also be considered in the business model and
implementation phasing.
8. Operational areas within the station building shall be planned with movement and
access control similar to airports. As such, separate arrival/ departure lounges,
waiting areas, parking/ pick and drop shall be planned.
