Hello, everyone, my name is Carlo Angelo Jonathan H. Templa.

The beginning of the industrial revolution was in 1854, when humans first
discovered the power of fossil fuels. It gave rise to countless automotive, it made
countries rich, and it paved the future for what it is now.

Yet the consequences are year by year worsen of our climate and we can
see all of that in the 21st century “when we are destroying forest that is equivalent
to the size of 100 Gaisano malls to extract coal and fossil fuel, when we are
emitting so much greenhouse gases it would become visible, when we are
dragging polar bear, Adelie penguins and corals to extinction, when we are
losing this much of ice, when this is how much sea level is rising, when we are
experiencing extreme drought that is damaging the agriculture roughly billions of
pesos, and we are starting a new mass extinction.”

Data from data showcase that more than two-thirds of all greenhouse
gases emitted were the result of extracting fossil fuels and coal to produce non-
renewable energy. Throughout the years, scientists have accurately traced how
much human activities can affect the rate of climate change, specifically the
burning and extracting of fossil fuels and coals. Sadly, as you can see in the graph,
the greenhouse gas emissions from human activities are now higher than at any
point in human history, and it might be due to the increased demand for energy.

So to fight back, the United Nations created an agreement called the Paris
agreement. It aims to lessen the global temperature by 2 degree Celsius by using
solar farms in drought areas, to put solar panels in houses, to use wind farms in a
windy area, to use geothermal power plant in near volcanic areas, to use hydro
power plant in huge rivers and to extract bioenergy from decomposing organic
materials. Although only 19 percent of all power comes from renewable, this plan
could raise it from 40 percent in the year 2025. Therefore, a significant increase in
renewable energy.

I found out in my research that there is a slow increase in production in

renewable energy; however, this would be solved by the Paris agreement, but
this is only applicable on a global scale.

Moving to a smaller scale. How can we help the increase of renewable

energy as a student? In the data gathered, Ihmacians have a strong level of
concern about the usage of renewable energy. It got the general description of
being highly concerned, meaning that they would use a solar panel, biofuel, and
energy coming from renewable resources to minimize or eradicate the use of fossil
fuels and coal. If the level of concern is acted upon students, not only Ihmacians,
this would create a significant decrease in total production of non-renewable
energy.

Despite being useful, renewable energy has its cons like its price and its
inability to generate enough power for itself. However, I have a solution to that, I
know it is controversial which other people might disagree or doubt. On April 26,
1986, there was a nuclear accident known as the Chernobyl, it was caused by
human error and faulty engineering. It led people to question the safety of
nuclear power plants.

I am going to ask you. What if the first car hit and killed a person? What if
the first plane crashed and killed hundreds of people? If the car or the plane were
banned due to this incident, a great opportunity would have been lost. When the
construction and production of the first nuclear energy were taken, humans still
have a shallow understanding of the engineering challenges and chemical
dangers of nuclear that ended up in a disaster.

However, now that we have a better understanding of how to properly

design a nuclear power plant to maintain a constant temperature and its ability
to withstand strong earthquakes and tsunamis. We need nuclear energy more
than ever to fill the energy shortage that renewable energy lacks.

How much can nuclear energy help? This is the entire Davao Oriental and
this how much Davao Oriental consume energy and imagine that the whole
Davao Oriental powered up by a single nuclear power plant without any
problems at all. The strength of a nuclear power plant can make fossil fuel and
coal obsolete while lowering the price of electricity. By using renewable energy,
it produces 40 percent of all energy needs, and by using nuclear power plants, it
could fill the 60 percent of energy while it reduces the price of electricity
eradicating the use of fossil fuel and coal.

To bring things to a close, fossil fuel and coal are useful, yet the overuse of
it would result in an increase of global temperature and would contribute to new
mass extinction. We as humans have been in space, we have landed on the
moon, we have imaged a black hole, and we have explored countless galaxies.
But the problem we're facing right now does not require us to have skills or to do
a lot, we just need to work together and put solar panels on our roofs, put dams
on our huge rivers, use geothermal in hot areas and try to open up the idea of
implementation of nuclear energy. Through this plan of action, we could minimize
the use of non-renewable energy by up to 80 percent and decreasing our
dependence on fossil fuels and coal.
I ask you one last question, why should we do it? Because our action means
a lot and the state of our future depends on it. Let me borrow the words of Robert
Swan because he said it best. “The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that
someone else will save it.”
