Sun Salutation Sweater

A reverse stocking stitch sweater, with a striking sun rays colourwork motif, and side
stripes.
This sweater is knitted inside out, so keep all yarn changes on the side that is facing you,
as well as any floats.
Sun Salutation Sweater

Yarn: 4ply/ fingering weight yarn in two colours.


Colour A - 3 (4, 4, 5, 5, 6) skeins of Cosmic Strings merino singles at 366m per 100g
Colour B - 1 skein as above - you will not need all of it, so if you have leftovers from
another project, you will need 40g for sizes XS, and S, 50g for M and L, and 60g for XL
and 2XL.

Needles: 3.5mm needles for main body and sleeves - one longer circular needle, and a
set of double pointed needles or shorter circular needle for sleeves.
3.25mm double pointed needles for neck and cuffs, plus a longer circular needle for hem.
Other tools:
Stitch markers
Tapestry needle
Stitch holders or scrap yarn.

Gauge: 22 sts and 24 rows over 10cm (4 inches) in stocking stitch, after washing and
blocking, using the larger needles.

Fit: Designed to fit with approximately 12.5 cm (5 inches) of positive ease.

XS (S, M, L, XL, 2XL)
36.5 (39.5, 45, 49, 52.25, 56) inches
93 (100.5, 114.5, 124.5, 133, 142) cm

M1L - make one left (Pick up the bar between the stitch you just worked and the stitch
you’re about to knit, bringing the needle from front to back. Then knit into the back of the
stitch.)
Sts – stitches
K2tog - knit two stitches together
SSK: slip knitwise, slip knitwise, knit the two slipped stitches together
W&T: wrap yarn around next stitch and turn work
SM: slip marker

Instructions
Using 3.25mm double pointed needles:
Cast on 108(108, 120, 128, 132, 132) stitches. Join to work in round, placing marker for
BOR.
Rnd 1: K1, P1, until BOR.
Repeat rnd 1 for a further 7 rounds.
Switch to 3.5mm double pointed needles.
Increasing:
Size XS only: *K3, m1L - repeat from * to BOR. 144 sts
Sizes S-2XL: *K2, m1L - repeat from * to BOR. X(162, 180, 192, 198, 198)sts.
Increase round 2:
Sizes XS, S, M and L: K.
Size XL: *K16, m1L - repeat until 6 sts before BOR, K6. 210 sts.
Size 2XL: M1L, K4, m1L, K5, m1L, *K9, m1L - repeat from * to BOR. 222 sts.

Short rows:
Row 1 (WS): From BOR, K54 (60, 70, 72, 78, 82) w&t
Row 2 (RS): P to BOR, SM, P54 (60, 70, 72, 78, 82), w&t.
Row 3: K to 5 sts before last wrapped st, w&t.
Row 4: P to 5 sts before last wrapped st, w&t.

Repeat rows 3 and 4, a further 4 (4, 5, 5, 5, 6) more times.


Knit to BOR.
This is the end of the short rows - resume working in the round.
Next round, K, picking up and knitting wraps with their corresponding sts.
Switch to colour B.
Next two rounds, P.

Begin yoke pattern chart:


Join in colour A. All stitches using colour A are knit stitches. All stitches using colour B
are purl stitches. Keep all floats on front of work! Remember that this sweater is worked
inside out, so it will be reversed after completion.
Follow chart, starting at the bottom right and working up. Repeat motif across all stitches.
End yoke pattern, breaking colour B. 288 (324, 360, 384, 420, 444) sts.
Continue to knit using colour A for 1 (1.5, 1.75, 2, 2.5, 3) inches or 2.5 ( 3.5, 4.5, 5, 6.5,
7.5) cm.

Separate body and sleeves:


From BOR, K 43 (49, 55, 60, 64, 67) sts, place next 58 (65, 70, 73, 82, 88) sts on a holder
for right sleeve. Cast on 14 (12, 14, 16, 14, 20) sts for underarm. K 86 (96, 110, 118, 128,
134) sts, then place next 58 (65, 70, 73, 82, 88) sts on a holder for left sleeve. Cast on 14
(12, 14, 16, 14, 20) sts for underarm, then K to BOR.

Body:
200 (218, 248, 270, 284, 308) sts.

Divide colour B ball into two smaller balls.


From BOR, using colour A, K 48 (53, 60, 66, 69, 75) sts, join in colour B, P 4 (3, 4, 3, 4,
4) sts, then using colour A, K 96 (106, 120, 132, 138, 150 ) sts. With colour B, P 4 (3, 4,
3, 4, 4) sts, then using colour A, K 48 (53, 60, 66, 69, 75) sts. This sets pattern for side
stripes.
Continue in this way until body measures 38 (38, 40, 40, 42, 42) cm or 15 (15, 16, 16, 17,
17) inches from underarm.

Short rows for dipped hem:


From BOR, K to 5 sts before side stripe, w&t.
P to 5 sts before side stripe, w&t.
K to 5 sts before previous wrap, w&t.
P to 5 sts before previous wrap, w&t.
Repeat previous two rows a further 5 times.

K to side stripe, picking up and knitting all wrapped sts as you come to them. Work side
stripe in P using colour B as previously set, then K using colour A until 5 sts before next
side stripe, w&t.
P to 5 sts before side stripe, w&t.
K to 5 sts before previous wrap, w&t.
P to 5 sts before previous wrap, w&t.
Repeat previous two rows a further 5 times.

Resume knitting in the round with side stripe, picking up and knitting all wrapped sts as
you come to them. Work for 5 rounds. Break colour B.

Ribbed hem:
Switch to smaller needles.

K1, P1 to BOR.
Work in rib for a further 7 rounds. Cast off in rib.

Sleeves:
Work both sleeves the same.
Move sleeve sts onto main needle. Join colour A at underarm to begin knitting in the
round. Knit all stitches, placing a marker for BOR in the middle of your underarm sts.
72 (77, 84, 89, 96, 108) sts.

Next round, from BOR, K to BOR.


Repeat until sleeve measures 7 (9 ,11, 13, 14, 15) cm, then begin decreasing as follows:

Decrease rnd: K1, K2tog, K to last 3 stitches, SSK, K1.


Repeat decrease round every 11(10, 8, 6, 5, 5)th round, until there are 56 (59, 60, 65, 68,
70) sts remaining. Continue until sleeve measures 40 (41, 42, 43, 44, 45)cm or until it
reaches desired length.
Sizes S and L only: K1, K2tog, K to end.
Switch to smaller needles.
Round 1: K1, P1 to BOR.
Repeat round 1 a further 7 times. Bind off in rib.

Finishing:
Sew in all ends, turn sweater inside out, then block.
