Reflective Paper

Hello, I am Wirda. I am an English student of State Islamic University of

Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau. I am from VI D class. Here, I will tell about my
experiences during learning an English subject. It is ELT Media Design subject. This
subject is taught by Mr. Robi Kurniawan. I will tell from the first meeting until the
last meeting.

On the first meeting, Mr. Robi Kurniawan explained the syllabus and material
that would be discussed. He divided us into some groups. Every group has 4-5
persons. Each group got one module to discuss and present in front of class. Each
presenter had to prepare and master the material that would be presented. Not only for
presenters, but also for the audiences had to read the material before conducting the
lesson. After explaining syllabus and any rules of his subject, he began to explain
about Media. This was related to the subject that we learnt.

Second meeting, Mr. Robi Kurniawan continued to explain about the first
module of our material. He explained the whole of the module and showed us a video
that were related to the material. The module topic was about Contextualizing
Language. It was talking about the use of language in real communication based on
the context. This helped students understand how language users construct language
in a given context. Language learning in context in the classroom could be expressed
in such ways as: working with real or simulated situations, paying attention to the
physical setting of exchange, knowing the purpose of the exchange, using language
that accounts for the roles of the participants, using socially acceptable norms of
interaction, paying attention to medium, tone, genre, and register. After learning
about Contextualizing Language, I could use and understand how important of using
language based on the context. Besides, I knew some activities and media that could
be used to teach students about Contextualizing Language. This was also an
interesting topic.

Next meeting, we began with new topic. This was the second module. It was
about Building Language Awareness. This topic was explained by the first group.
Before explaining the material, they showed us a video about the module or material.
Then, they explained the material as well. Each member explained their part. After
explaining the material was continued to answer and question session. Based on their
explanation, I could know that Building Language Awareness was to help learners
became aware of language forms and practiced language in context. This was to build
the students awareness toward learning language. Making the students understand
about language forms or rules in using language.

The third module was explained by the second group. It was about Integrating
Skills. This was about how to integrate English skills. It was primary language skills:
listening and reading (the receptive skills) and speaking and writing (the productive
skills) and Sub-skills such as grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and spelling.
Based on the third module, I could know how English skills could be integrated in the
classroom, along with a look at some kinds of activities and resources that might be
used to support skill integration. For example: Skills used were writing, speaking, and
listening. Students chose a picture, pasted it on a sheet of paper, wrote about it on the
same sheet of paper, and then read it aloud to the teacher and the other student.

The next meeting, we discussed about Pairwork / Groupwork. This was the
fourth module of our material. Based on the third group explanation, I got much
knowledge about the material on that day. I became understand and able to applicate
in real situation. Group needed more than 3 persons in one group, while Pair just
needed 2 persons in one group. Pair and group worked incorporate principles and
themes from the Cooperative Learning and Collaborative Learning. We could use
many things to do activity in pair or group work such as using picture or photo. By
Describing, Interpreting, Evaluating the picture, we could know what is happening
with pair and group work in the classes. We could compare the result of both pair and
group work.

This was the last module that we discussed, it was about Learner Feedback.
This was presented by the fourth group. They explained material as well. This was an
interesting topic. It was talking about learner feedback toward learning. The feedback
might be a negative effect (the person was angry or sad) or a positive effect (smiles
all around). There were several important aspects to consider when giving feedback,
they were: first, both positive and negative feedback were needed for the most
effective learning. Negative feedback was direct error correction or drawing attention
to error. Positive feedback could be affective, could reward for correct or successful
communication. Second, Feedback could be oral, written, or non-verbal; it could be
given to individuals, groups, or the entire class. Third, Feedback could be given
immediately or delayed, depending on which would be most effective for the task or
situation. Fourth, Feedback could be either formative or summative. Fifth, It was
important to understand the nature of an error in order to determine whether and how
to use corrective feedback. These fourth module focused on formative feedback. This
feedback used to check on learner progress during the period of learning, to
determine what had been learned so far and what still needed work. it was
continuous, and it could encourage or discourage the learner.

Actually I had known about feedback before, but after learning “giving
feedback” I could give feedback in learning as well. Not only that, I got much
feedback from my friends and my lecturer. Not only in learning but also in daily life.
Feedback was very important in teaching and learning process. It made learning
process running well and achieved the goal of education. Both teachers and students
could know the weaknesses in learning and able to evaluate and repair it.

This was the last meeting, actually I disappointed because today was my
presentation time. I had prepared before to present material as well. We were the last
group that would present the sixth module. It did not happen because of the time was
not enough. On that day, my lecturer just told us about final and middle examination.
He explained what will we made and the time submitted.

I got much experiences and knowledge during learning ELT Media Design. It
was not only cognitive but also social. In cognitive, I got much knowledge about
teaching method that could be used when I became teacher later. In social, I became
aware when Mr Robi gave us advice. How important is attitude in seeking knowledge
and education. On that day, he was angry to us because of our fault. We came late to
class and the presenters also made mistake. They presented the material that had
explained by him. Of course, he became angry because no one who remember the
material that would be present on that day. Actually I was afraid, because he was
rarely angry. It was the first and last time he was angry to us until the end of learning.

When conducting the learning, sometimes I felt bored. When it came, I did
another fun activity. Sometimes, I drew the picture in my book. I became bored
because of the presentation was too long. Some of the presenters just read the slide
without any explanation when presenting the material. Of course it made boring and
was not interesting. They did not explain by their own words. Some of them explain
material as well and easy to understand. But I was enjoying every meeting.

That is all, I thank to Mr Robi Kurniawan for being our lecturer. Who has
spent a lot of time and energy for us. I do apologize if I do many mistakes.
