1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Development
The Gunflint Field is located in Mississippi Canyon Block 948, in approximately 6,100’ water depth.
The Gunflint reservoir is in a Middle/Lower Miocene formation and is expected to produce high GOR
oil, with shut-in tubing pressure of approximately 12,620-psia. Evaluation of the initial appraisal wells
indicated two likely development options: subsea tieback to an existing host, or subsea production to
a new-build local host. The tieback option was eventually selected. The Tieback is envisioned as a
dual flowline loop allowing for round-trip pigging and dead-oil circulation. Hydrocarbons from wells
MC 948#4 and MC 948#2 will be routed through two 8” flowlines to Williams’ Gulfstar 1 Spar (MC
724).

1.3 Definitions
Term Definition
Action to Secure Action performed to prevent hydrate formation in the subsea system by dry oiling the
flowlines or by treating with methanol (bullheading into wellbore or injection into flowline
jumper)
Arrival Temperature Flowing temperature of the fluids at the boarding facility
Bubble Point The temperature and pressure at which the first bubble of gas forms from the crude oil or
condensate
Chilly Choke The term used to describe excessive cooling when starting up a well into a pipeline under
low pressure. For a period of time, the piping downstream of the choke may dip below the
design temperature of the metal until the well warms up.
Cloud Point The temperature at which a liquid (as petroleum oil) begins to cloud (as from separation of
wax on cooling).
Cooldown Time The minimum preservation temperature for a shutdown before the appearance of hydrates.
Expressed in the number of hours before the hydrate mitigation operations needs to be
completed (e.g., dead oiling, blowdown).
Hydrate Dissociation The pressure at a corresponding temperature of the hydrate curve, below which hydrates
Pressure (HDP) will not form.
Hydrate Dissociation The temperature at a corresponding pressure on the hydrate curve, above which hydrates
Temperature (HDT) will not form.
Inhibited Production Live production fluids which have been treated with methanol or LDHI (low dosage hydrate
inhibitor) so that any produced or condensed water in the flowline, tree, or wellbore will not
form hydrates at ambient conditions and system pressures.
No-Touch Time The period of time following a shut-in, in which the equipment is allowed to cool without the
need for operator intervention. Note that within the no-touch time, the equipment may be
restarted without requiring any hydrate mitigation operations (e.g., methanol injection,
blowdown).
Pour Point With continued cooling, this is the temperature at which the liquid petroleum turns to gel.

2.0 DESIGN BASIS

2.1 Location
Reference [6]
The Gunflint Field is located in Mississippi Canyon Block 948, in approximately 6,100’ water depth.
The Gunflint reservoir is in a Middle/Lower Miocene formation and is expected to produce high GOR
oil, with shut-in tubing pressure of approximately 12,620-psia. Evaluation of the initial appraisal wells
indicated two likely development options: subsea tieback to an existing host, or subsea production to

dual flowline loop allowing for round-trip pigging and dead-oil circulation. Hydrocarbons from wells
MC 948#4 and MC 948#2 will be routed through two 8” flowlines to Williams’ Gulfstar 1 Spar (MC
725).
Noble Energy is the operator of the Gunflint Field. Partners in the Field development include
Ecopetrol, Marathon and Samson.

Figure 2-1 Project Vicinity Map

2.1.1 Future Wells

While the initial development plan includes only two Production wells (MC 948#4 and 948#2), the
umbilical, distribution and controls systems shall be designed to accommodate one future production
well and one future water injection well.

2.1.2 Gas Lift

The current development plan does not include gas lift. However, the ILSs with riser base transition
joints are designed with access points to allow the addition of riser base gas lift.
The Flow Assurance analysis of gas lift requirement for Gunflint field operation suggests little or no
benefit of increase in production due to gas injection. The reservoir pressure is sufficient to meet
targeted flowrates without injecting gas.
The transient analysis with gas injection of up to 10 MMSCFD shows no benefit for overcoming
slugging issues during the turndown flowrate scenario. The high GOR reservoir fluids (as expected
from production forecast) makes gas lift injection un-necessary.

2.1.3 Gas Injection

There is no expectation for initial or future gas injection requirements.

2.1.4 Water Injection

A water injection well may be added in a later phase of the Field development. The common main
field umbilical and control system, would be used to operate the well. Water injection is not
addressed in this document.

2.1.5 System Design Temperatures and Pressures

The maximum allowable operating pressures (MAOP)/design pressure is 12,620 psi and the
maximum design temperatures are 250º F for the pipelines, jumpers and PLETS and 200º F for the
SCRs.

2.1.6 Design Life

The design life for all the components of the Gunflint Tie-backs including subsea facilities/equipment,
umbilicals, flowlines and risers is 20 years.

3.7 Control System

Gunflint subsea system will be designed to provide smooth control of the operations from the
topsides. Error! Reference source not found. shows a block diagram of the subsea control system.
The Master Control System (MCS) receives input from the Remote Operating System (ROS) and
Distributed Control System (DCS) via intersystem communication links. The logic controllers and
Human Machine Interface (HMI) controllers of the MCS will send the signal to the Electrical Power
Unit (EPU). The HPU will transmit hydralic fluids required to operate actuated valves via the Topside
Umbilical Termination Assembly (TUTA). The Safety Support System (SSS) will activate the
shutdown sequence via MCS and HPU to close critical valves as part of the shutdown procedure so
that the system can be returned to a safe condition.

3.10 Chemical Injection Systems

Chemical injection philosophy is based on the following:

• Downhole injection (3): Continuous asphaltene inhibitor and corrosion/scale inhibitor (pre-
mixed cocktail) are planned deep (through CID2 and CID3), with continuous LDHI injected
above the SCSSV (through CID1)

• Subsea tree injection (3): Two methanol injection points (CIT1, between PMV/PWV, and
CIT2, upstream of FIV) are provided. Paraffin inhibitor injection is provided via CIT3 as needed.
3.10.1 Methanol Injection System
Hydrate inhibition with methanol is selected for protecting isolated parts of the subsea production
system (tree and well jumper). Methanol will be required for batch treatment during the following
operations:

• Planned and unplanned shutdown

• In special cases (for example during hydrate remediation or treatment of dead legs)
3.10.2 Low Dosage Hydrate Inhibitor (LDHI) Injection System
• LDHI is planned for downhole continuous injection above the SCSSV for continuous hydrate
mitigation.
3.10.3 Corrosion/Scale Inhibitor Injection System
• Corrosion/Scale is injected continuously downhole.

• Corrosion inhibitor is injected to control the interior corrosion of the metal surface from the well
to the riser.

• Scale inhibitor (if required, based on water production and chemistry) is injected to prevent
deposition of inorganic scales (calcium carbonates, barium sulfate etc.) within the well and/or
the subsea production system.
3.10.4 Asphaltene Inhibitor Injection System
• Asphaltene inhibitor downhole is continuously injected close to the reservoir perforation zone
(just above the production packer).
3.10.5 Paraffin Inhibitor
• Continuous injection of paraffin inhibitor is not planned, however as a contingency and if
needed; paraffin inhibitor can be injected downstream of the FIV through CIT3.

4.0 SUBSEA SYSTEM TOPSIDES FACILITIES

4.1 Overview
The Gunflint wells will be tied back to Williams’ Gulfstar 1 Spar.
The coordinates of the Gulfstar 1 Spar are:

Table 4-1 Coordinates of Gulfstar 1 Spar

Gulfstar 1 4,032.94 MC 724 ~122,000 998,070 10,251,530

4.2 Gulfstar 1 Spar

The Gulfstar 1 Spar is a ‘classic’ Spar to be installed in Mississippi Canyon Block 724 in
approximately 4,000 ft water depth. It will be held in position by 9 mooring lines, arranged in 3
equally spaced clusters.
General arrangement drawings for the Gulfstar 1 Spar are provided in Appendix A.
Figure 4-1 shows the coordinate system is for the Gulfstar 1 platform. The coordinate system is
defined as X positive toward to Platform East, Y positive toward to Platform North, Z positive upward
with origin at MWL. The spar deck is located at 60 ft above Mean Water Level (MWL). The pull tube
top flanges are 61.0 ft above MWL. The SCRs exit from the Spar through pull tube at the bottom of
the soft tank. The azimuth angles are defined with respect to Grid North clockwise.

4.3 Subsea Procedures Affecting Gulfstar 1

4.3.1 Pigging
Flowlines, Flowline jumpers, risers, and ILS/PLETs are designed for operational pigging. Pigging will
not be required for the well jumpers.
All flowlines are designed to accommodate maintenance and inspection pigging. Flowline sections in
the pigging route will preclude sudden inside diameter (ID) changes. When a change in diameter is
required, a taper of 1:6 or shallower will be provided on the diameter. Thus, at least six length units in
the axial pipe direction will be provided for one length unit of diameter change.

4.3.2 Blowdown
Flow Assurance analysis shows, post blowdown pressures at the deepest point in subsea flowline will
range between 250-400 psi. For the corresponding seabed temperatures of 40 °F, the fluid remains in
hydrate forming zone.
Blowdown cannot be used as an effective hydrate mitigation strategy due to the resulting pressure at
the wellhead location (deepest points in the system) not being outside of the hydrate formation
temperature. However, blowdown can be carried out to buy out additional time (34 hours to 50 hours)
in case hot oil circulation is not possible.

4.3.3 Dead Oil Flushing

The main purpose of the dead oil circulation is to displace the “live” fluid from the production flowline
and riser in the event of shutdown, depending on the duration of shutdown.
The time required to displace the production fluid, depends on several factors such as dead oil pump
pressure, dead oil circulation rate, etc.
The dead oil pump is rated for 34,000 BOPD at 2,200 psi discharge pressure. Ref [5]

4.3.4 Chemical Injection

Refer to topsides documentation for starting the methanol / chemical injection pumps and section 7.7
for subsea valve equalization.

5.0 MODE OF OPERATION

5.1 Operating Strategies

5.1.1 Restart Operations

Reference [5]

5.1.1.1 Cold Restart

A Cold Restart involves continuously injecting LDHI (or methanol) to inhibit the live fluids from the
well(s). Depending on water cut, significant quantities of methanol or LDHI will need to be injected
until acceptable wellhead temperatures are achieved. If the water cut is above the LDHI chemistry
(late life), then methanol should preferably be injected until wellhead temperature exceeds 100o F.
Once the temperature is exceeded, the system will be switched to continuous LDHI injection for
normal operation.
If the system is dead oiled first (which is not a typical event), the wells will be ramped up to the target
flowrate over 6 hours during the restart operation, to avoid huge surge volumes at the topside
separator.

5.1.1.2 Warm Restart

If restart can be commenced, following a process trip, before the end of “no-touch” time, it is
considered a Warm Restart. Production fluids in the subsea system (subsea tree, flowline, riser, well
jumpers, etc.) will still be above hydrate formation temperature for the “no-touch” time duration.
Irrespective of the flow routing; wells flow to dedicated headers i.e. each well producing through
separate flowline and riser or comingled flow i.e. production from both wells is combined through
single flowline and riser - the “no-touch” time for the gunflint wells is 4 hours. This is the most
conservative time estimated from cooldown time of the subsea system (cooldown time of flowline and
riser varies from 6 hours to 12 hours) minus time required for methanol treatment of subsea trees and
jumpers.

5.1.1.3 Individual Well Restart

Individual Well Restart is a Late Life Condition? in which one flowline is shut-in and maintained with
dead oil. Both wells are produced into a single flowline.
This scenario assumes one well is shut down, but the other well is producing during commingling of
the production fluids. In this case the producing flowline and riser are warm, and the well of interest is
cold.

Document Revision A

5.1.2 Shutdown Operations

Reference [4]
Methanol should be used to protect the well jumpers, the tree and the top of the well during
unplanned and extended planned shutdowns. Note however that continuous LDHI injection at the
SCSSV will provide protection against hydrates during shutdown scenarios even if the system cools
down to ambient conditions. Methanol displacement guidelines are provided as a backup, to be
implemented regardless of the LDHI injection in case the shutdown lasts for a period longer than the
maximum allowed with LDHI and/or in the event that LDHI injection fails. The decision to use
methanol or not will most depend on the nature of the shutdown scenario and the likelihood to restart
production back online. The following are general guidelines for Gunflint:

• 0 to 4 hours immediately following a shutdown:

o This period of time should be used to assess the shutdown situation before making any
decision or initiating any repair, procedure, etc.

• 4 to 8 hours:
o Displace jumper (2 x jumper volume) with methanol
o Displace tree with 3-5 bbl of methanol

• 8-10 hours (well 948 #2, VIT completion):

o Bullhead methanol down to the SCSSV due to cool down limitations created by the VIT. No
need to bullhead methanol if the SCSSV is to remain open
Dead oil circulation, if feasible, should be conducted for hurricane evacuation scenarios and/or when
shutdown conditions are expected to last more than 1 week. This will stabilize the system restart, as
well as provide additional measure of protection against hydrates during restart.
Volume of MeOH required for the treatment of jumper and trees is shown in Table 5-1. Reference [5]

5.1.3 Protection of System Prior to a Planned Shut Down

Reference [4]
Prepare the system for planned shutdown by treating at a minimum 1 flowline and riser residence
time (bottoms-up) before shutting down the system. At this point no further action is required. System
should be restarted following the warm well, warm flowline/riser scenario. Table 5-2 shows the
expected times to bottom up based on average production rates:

Five of the Automatic Shutdowns have Timers associated with them. They are as follows: Process
Upset Shutdown (PSD), Pipeline Process Safety High Low (PSHL), Platform Emergency Shutdown
(ESD), Subsea Emergency Shutdown from Platform (SESD Platform), and SESD from Mobile
Offshore Drilling Unit (SESD MODU). Table 5-5 provides a summary of the automatic shutdowns.

5.5.1 Valve
When timer is expired, MCS initiates a valve closure command to the corresponding valve listed in
this column.

5.5.2 Timer
Timers are used for different alarm scenarios to initiate valve closure. If the shutdown signal is
cleared prior to completion of the shutdown sequence, the sequence is to terminate until the
Underwater Safety Valve 1 (USV1) and Alternate Isolation Valve (AIV) are in the close position. Then,
Timers are reset. This method ensures the well is shut-in and in a safe state before restart for
production.
HMI Valve Open command on subsea valves are inhibited while a shutdown signal is active.

5.5.3 Activate
Timer expiration without using the timer reset.

5.5.4 Timer Reset

6.0 RESTART OPERATIONS

Cold Restart and Warm Restart are the two system restart operations for Gunflint. Individual Well
Restart addresses the third restart, which involves both of the wells producing into a single flowline.

6.1 Cold Restart

A Cold Restart is defined as the subsea production system has been shutdown sufficiently long
enough to reach ambient conditions. The wells and well jumpers are inhibited with methanol. The
flowlines and risers may be filled with dead oil, depending on the length and type of shutdown.

Step Task Remarks Initials

Align Topsides Valves

1. Close topsides choke. When ready to restart well, open topsides
choke.
2. Equalize pressure across BSDV and open. Ensure that the first SDV is open.

Ensure Proper (Flowing) Valve Alignment

3. Open AMV and monitor annulus pressure. If annulus pressure (APT) exceeds the
allowable acceptable amount, proceed to
Annulus Management (Section 7.2).
4. Ensure FIV is closed. If the pressure at FPT is below allowable start
up pressure, refer to the Flowline Back
Pressure procedure (Section 10.5).
Open PWV & PMV (if closed)

7.0 PRODUCTION OPERATIONS

7.1 Normal Production

7.1.1 Philosophy
In the early life of production, both the wells MC 948#4 and MC 948#2 will be flowing through a
dedicated flowline and riser as shown in Figure 7-1. The production through MC 948#4 and MC
948#2 will reduce drastically during mid and late life of the field. Fluids from both the wells will be
commingled in late life of field as shown in Figure 7-2 to minimize the likelihood of slugging and to
reduce wax formation risk (Ref [5]).

7.1.2 Steady State Operation

The steady state simulations for MC 948#4 and MC 948#2 indicate that the wells need to be choked
in order to match the expected flowrates, which indicate that the reservoir has enough pressure to
deliver the expected production.
The target flowrates can be met without any constraint throughout the life of the field for arrival
pressure of 650 psig or lower. In the early life, hydrate and wax issues are not anticipated due to the
arrival temperatures being above the WAT. As individual well production starts dropping in late life,
arrival temperatures drop below hydrate and wax forming temperature limit.
Hydrates during flowing steady state conditions are not expected during field production (Ref [12]).

7.1.3 Turndown
Turndown rates are recognized when producing subsea field pairs with operating challenges such as
slugging, lower arrival temperatures, thus, hydrate, and wax issues etc. The gunflint system shows
likelihood of slugging issues when individual well flowrates drop below ~9,000 STBPD. The limiting
flowrate at which the slugging will be predominant is based on the arrival pressure of 650 psig. At
higher arrival pressure, system can be operated for much lower flowrates without slugging tendencies
(Ref [5]).

7.2 Annulus Pressure Management

When production reaches steady state and the annulus fluid temperature has stabilized, there is
unlikely to be any fluctuations in the annulus pressure, unless the integrity of the completion is
compromised and hydrocarbons migrate from the production tubing into the annulus. Ref [5]
Pressure and temperature sensors are installed on the Gunflint production tree to monitor annulus
pressure. Casing design and setting depths have been considered, regarding the possibility of
annular pressure buildup.
Annulus pressure will be bled off through the annulus monitor (AMON) line, while the well continues
producing into the flowline. The XOVP remains closed preventing the possibility of reverse flow of
produced fluids into the annulus.

Step Task Remarks Initials

7.3 Sand Detection

Sand control techniques have been implemented for Gunflint wells through provision of gravel packs
and sand screens at the perforation levels. This will not prevent, but will control, sand production from
the wells. Sand production is best prevented by adhering to the startup guidelines especially with
respect to drawdown limitations and rate of ramp up.
Non-intrusive acoustic sand detectors have been provided on each well jumper in order to monitor
sand production as well as detecting any failure of the sand control equipment. The monitoring of
these acoustic detectors will be on a continuous basis, but especially during well start-up. If a gross
failure of a sand screen is suspected, based on a rapid unexplained increase of acoustic readings
and declining choke upstream pressure, the well should be shut-in. Prompt shutdown is appropriate
to avoid very costly accumulation of sand in the wellbore and flow loop. Ref [5]

7.4 Pressure/Temperature Monitoring

The maximum allowable operating pressures (MAOP)/design pressure is 12,620 psia and the
maximum design temperatures are 250 ºF for the pipelines, jumpers and ILS/PLETS and 200 ºF for
the SCRs. Ref [6]
Internal fluid density, pressure, and temperature data for production SCRs are presented in Table
7-1.

Ref [6]
During normal production operations, downhole, subsea and topsides pressure and temperature
information verifies that the system is performing properly. It monitors and alarms for abnormal
conditions, also data monitoring, and interpolation, which reduce hydrate formation risk in the subsea
system.
Pressure and temperature gauges monitor the production flow stream at various subsea locations as
follows:

• Downhole – Gunflint production wells are equipped with permanent downhole pressure and
temperature gauges located just above the perforations. By having downhole gauges, a continual
measurement of downhole pressure and temperature will be made without rig intervention and
interruption of production. The gauges will be used to conduct conventional pressure transient
test, interference and static test. The downhole sensors will also enable a wellbore and network
flowline model to run real time.

• Production Tree - subsea pressure and temperature sensors are located as follows:
o Dual-pressure and dual-temperature gauges, UPT1/UPT2 located between the PMV and
PWV monitors the flowing wellhead temperature and pressure on the tree
o Dual-pressure and dual-temperature gauges, DPT1/DPT2, located downstream of the
production choke valve monitors flowing conditions in the well jumper
o Dual-pressure and dual-temperature gauges APT1/APT2, located between the AMV and
AWV, monitors annulus pressure and temperature
o Dual-pressure and dual-temperature gauges FPT1/FPT2, located downstream of FIV. These
gauges will be used to monitor the pressure and temperature at the PLETs during short term
and extended shutdowns. During system startup, the operator will be able to confirm the
production flowline pressures to establish pressure communication with the subsea system.
In addition to the pressure and temperature sensors on the trees, there is a choke position indicator
(CPI) that is located on each production choke.
At the host platform, the arrival temperature and pressure will be monitored to assure operation
above both the hydrate and wax appearance points.

Four alarm settings can be programmed at the MCS for each subsea sensor; they are:

• High/High – High – Low – Low/Low

Two alarm settings can be programmed at the DCS for each sensor:

• High – Low
Pressure alarm(s) will be set and maintained for downhole pressure to monitor drawdown.
Pressure alarm(s) will be set and maintained to monitor for annulus pressure increase or decreases
from the last diagnostic test.
If failure of the Annulus Pressure Transmitter (APT) is encountered, engineering approval is required
for an acceptable duration between annulus pressure checks. These checks should be performed
according to the approved schedule.
The XOVP and XOVA remain closed except when performing these checks.

7.5 Chemical Injection

Methanol injection will not be sufficient to inhibit all the water production that is expected, continuous
LDHI injection will need to be implemented in order to protect the system against hydrate formation.
During normal production, methanol will not be injected. Continuous LDHI injection will be
implemented instead.
Gunflint subsea field will use five types of chemical injections methanol, Low Dosage Hydrate
Inhibitor (LDHI), corrosion/scale inhibitor, asphaltene and paraffin inhibitor. Methanol will be injected
to treat, dead leg, subsea trees, jumpers during normal operation and shutdown. LDHI will be
continuously injected downhole at SCSSV during normal operation. Corrosion/scale inhibitor will be
injected to control the interior corrosion of the metal surface from the well to the riser. The chemical is
also injected to prevent deposition of inorganic scales (calcium carbonates, barium sulfate etc., within
the well and/or the subsea production system. Asphaltene inhibitor downhole will be continuously
injected close to the reservoir perforation zone (just above the production packer). Continuous
injection of paraffin inhibitor is not planned, however as a contingency and if needed; paraffin inhibitor
can be injected at the tree, downstream of the FIV through the CIT3. Table 7-2 lists all chemicals and
their locations, which will be required for operating Gunflint field.

7.6 Subsea Choke Position and Calibration

The MCS shall provide the ability to operate chokes from the control console. Clicking on the choke
symbol on a screen will bring up the choke control dialogue window. After a choke is operating, the
operator has the ability to abort the current operation. After an Abort button is selected a confirmation
is required, then a command is sent to the SCM to abort the current choke operation.
From the MCS, additional choke functions can be performed. In the Choke Control Dialog Window
and the Choke Configuration Window it is possible to:

• Modify the Calculated Position

• Override the choke position indicator

• Set Configuration Parameters of the Choke

• Step Size

• Pulse Width

• Pulse Period

• Solenoid Duration

• Max difference between Calculated Position and Sensor Position (Default value of 10%)
The operator can specify the position open, in terms of percentage open, to which the choke should
be operated, and the SEM shall operate the choke in either the Open or Close direction until the
require position is reached. The SEM shall determine the number pulses based on the current
position which is indicated by the position sensor, however it is possible from the dialogue window to
de-select sensor mode in which case the SEM shall use the calculated position. It is possible to reset
the calculated position from the dialogue window. During an operation the calculated position is
maintained by the SEM, as a percentage open, based on the number of pulses issued.
The MCS shall not limit the number of Choke operations triggered, the MCS shall check against any
interlocks on the Choke.

9.0 TESTING OPERATIONS

Section 9 consists of Gunflint subsea and subsea-related Testing operations. Included are tests for
valve leakage and ESD testing.

9.1 Platform ESD Tests

Per the approved DWOP, the electronic system must be tested monthly (not to exceed 6 weeks), by
placing the shutdown ladder logic in bypass mode and an ESD station functioned.
Once every quarter (not to exceed 120 days), the ESD criteria will be satisfied by activation of an
ESD station and completely closing BSDV, USV1 and SCSSV on a randomly selected subsea well.
These departures from CFR 250.804(a) (11) are allowed only if the entire system from the platform
ESD station(s) or activation point to the final control relay are electronic based. In addition, the
operator must satisfy the electronic criteria as stated in NTL No. 2000-G13 and NTL No. 2002. 2202-
G03.

9.1.1 Monthly Electronic ESD Test
