KINDS OF ENERGY

A DepEd-BEAM Distance Learning Program supported by the Australian Agency for International Development
To the Learner

What causes you to walk, run, jump or climb a tree? Energy

allows you to move and do work. Without it, there can be no force and
work cannot be done. Energy has two kinds. In this module, you will
be learning about the two kinds of energy.

Let’s Learn This

 Identify the kinds of energy

Differentiate potential energy from kinetic energy

Let’s Try This

Write PE if picture shows potential energy and KE if it has kinetic

energy.

3. 4.

5. 6.

Let’s Study This

You have learned that energy is the ability to do work. There are
two kinds of energy-potential energy and Kinetic energy.
Object raised above the ground has a kind of stored because of
its positioned energy called potential energy.
energy This is because the
force of gravity is ready to bring it back to the ground as soon as it is
released. An object has potential energy because of its position.
Potential energy is energy at rest. It is not doing anything but is ready
to be released.
Kinetic energy is the energy that is in motion or the moving
energy.

2
Water behind a dam is not moving. It has potential energy. When
the floodgates of the dam are opened, the water moves down. Hs
potential energy was put to work when it was changed to kinetic
energy.
A guava fruit hanging on a branch has potential energy. When it
falls, the potential energy is transformed or changed into kinetic
energy.

Let’s Do This

Try this activity by yourself. If you can’t do it, you may ask help
from anybody. This activity will help you know how potential energy in
a rubber band is changed into kinetic energy.

A. B.

Get two ballpens and rubber band. Wind a rubber band around
the two ball pens several times (as shown in picture A). Turn the ball
pens in opposite directions (as shown in picture B) until the rubber
band is tight enough. Lay the ballpens on the table.

3
Observe what happens and then answer the following question:

1. What energy does a rubber band have?

2. When the coiled rubber band is released, what energy does it
posses?
3. In this activity, is potential energy of the rubber band changed
into kinetic energy? _______________ How? _________________

Let’s Do More

A. Identify the kind of energy shown by each picture.

1.

2.

4
3.

B. Differentiate potential energy from kinetic energy.

Let’s Remember This

There are two kinds of energy – potential energy and

kinetic energy
Potential energy is the energy at rest or stored
Kinetic energy is the energy in motion
Potential energy can be transformed or changed to
kinetic energy.

Let’s Test Ourselves

Answer the following question on your answer sheet.

1. A melon fruit is on the edge of the table. What kind of energy
does it have?
2. A girl threw a ball over the fence. What energy did the moving
ball have?

5
3. The water from a dam rushes down. What kind of energy does it
posses?
4. What energy is possessed by falling coconut fruit?
5. Kinetic energy is the energy in motion. What is the energy at
rest?

Science Fact File

Gravitational potential energy is the energy stored in an object

as the result of its vertical position or height. The energy is stored as
the result of the gravitational attraction of the Earth for the objects.
The gravitational potentials energy of the massive ball of a demolition
machine is dependent on two variables-the mass of the ball and the
height to which it is raised. There is a direct relation between
gravitational potential energy and mass of an object. More massive
objects have greater gravitational potential energy and the height of
an object. The higher than an object is elevated, the greater the
gravitational energy.

Elastic Potential Energy

Elastic Potential Energy is the energy stored in elastic materials

as the results of their stretching or compressing. Elastic potential
energy can be stored in rubber bands, bungee chords, trampolines,
spring, an arrow drawn into a bow, etc. The amount of elastic
potential energy stored in such a device is related to the amount of
stretch of the device the more stretch, the more stored energy.
