SOPHIA: (First slide) As students, after receiving our grades, we usually ask ourselves,

“Why is it like this? How is this computed?” You ask yourselves that question
maybe because you got high scores in your quizzes yet you got a grade less than
what you have expected or you do not recite as often as your classmate does yet
you still got a grade higher than hers. Today, we are going to discuss about the
computation of class average and final averages or weighted grades of students
using Excel.

DONNA: (Second slide) Before we tackle about its computation, let me first define grades.
Grade is a particular level of rank, quality, proficiency, intensity, or value, or in
other words, it is used to measure performance of a student. Through grades,
teachers are able to tell that a student is doing well in learning. Through grades also
students are able to evaluate themselves on their performance. But how is it
computed?

LAURENCE: (Third slide) Let us take the grade sheet of the PSC100: Political Science class as
a reference for our computation. There are actually 34 students but I’m only going
to show the records of 9 students because the whole sheet is too big to fit in the
image. First, we are going to discuss how to compute for the class average of each
exam. (Fourth slide) Class average of each exam means the central or typical score
in the set of grades of an exam. Here, teachers will be able to determine if whether
students, in general, did well in the examination, or not. To get it, you just have to
input =AVERAGE and an open parenthesis in a cell, where you would want the
results to be placed, and then highlight the grades for the Exam 1, which is placed
in the column B, from 6th row down to the 39th. Hence inputted in the formula bar
as B6, colon, B39. Then input close parenthesis and click enter to get the result.
Same goes with Exam 2, click a cell where you want the result to be placed, type
=AVERAGE(, and then highlight the grades for the second examination which is
placed in column C, from 6th row to 39th, and then finish it with a close parenthesis.
Do the same for Exam 3 Class average, but the highlighted column will be the
Column D, from 6th to 39th also. Then you will be able to get the class average for
the examination.

JUSTINE: (Fifth slide) For the final average or weighted grades, the examination, paper and
participation are given different weight or percentage in the final average. Each
exam weighs 25% of the final grade, paper 15%, and the participation, 10%. To get
the final average, each exam grade should be multiplied to 25%, paper should be
multiplied to 15%, and the participation to 10%. The product or answers of
everything that we multiplied are added to get the final grade. To elaborate, let us
use the grades of the first student, who is listed on the 6th row of Excel. Click a cell
where you want to put the final grades. In this case, final grades are listed on
Column G. Input = (, then click the first grade listed in the sheet which is the grade
for the first examination, located in Column B, 6th row. After clicking, input the
sign for the multiplication which is an asterisk and then input dollar sign, then click
the cell where the percentage for examination, the 25%, is located. In this case, it’s
in cell B44. After clicking, make sure to put a dollar sign also between the Column
letter and the row number of the cell so that you will be able to retain this cell in the
formula all throughout the computation of the students’ final grades. Then input
close parenthesis to give way for another operation to be used. Input the + and then
open parenthesis, click the cell for the second grade given which is the grade for
second examination, input asterisk, dollar sign, input the column letter of the
percentage of the second examination which is 25% and is located in the column C.
Then input again dollar sign and then the number of the row of the percentage which
is 44. Close it with close parenthesis and then input + to compute for the third
examination. Input open parenthesis, click the third examination grade, multiply to
its corresponding weight, located at D44. Put dollar sign before the column letter
and between the column letter and the row number, and then input close parenthesis,
and another + and open parenthesis for the paper grade. Click the paper grade which
is in Column E, multiply to its weight in cell E44, do not forget to put dollar sign
before and after the column letter, and then close parenthesis, +, and open
parenthesis for the computation of participation. Click the F6 where the
participation grade is located, multiply to its weight in F44, input dollar signs
between and after the column letter of the weight, input close parenthesis, and click
enter to get the final average of the first student. Drag it down up to the last student
to copy the formula and get the final average of the remaining students.

SOPHIA: (Sixth slide) To show the distribution of the final average, a chart is made. This
chart shows how many students have grades below 60, 60-69, 70-79, 80-89 and 90-
100. The vertical axis shows the frequency or how many students have reached a
certain grade. The horizontal axis shows the ranges of final grades. Based on the
computed final averages, there are only 2 students who got an average of below 60,
5 students who had 60-69 grade, 6 students who got a final average of 70-79, a
number of 13 students who have reached the grade of 80-89, and 8 students who
got a 90-100 average.

DONNA: (Seventh slide) That’s all for our discussion on the computation of class average
and final average of students. We hope that we answer your question on how your
grades are computed. Before we end this presentation, we would like to leave
recommendations on how to maximize the use of Excel.
 Be familiar with the functions of formulas to know what to appropriately
use for a specific situation.
 After familiarizing, practice applying these formulas in excel exercises.
Thank you everyone for listening, should you have any questions, feel free to
ask us. If none, this will be the end of our presentation. Again, thank you and
may you all have a good day!
