CHAPTER I – THE PROBLEM

Background of the Study

Computer System Servicing (CSS) covers basic and common competencies such

as installing, maintaining, configuring, and diagnosing computer system and set – up

computer networks. It develops students’ skills in diagnosis and troubleshooting of

computer systems, as well as in the performance of computer operations. Also, it will

nurture their knowledge which they can bring in the future. In the modern era, the CSS is

required for the ICT students. Thus, this course is designed in such a way to enhance

their skills and to know what is all about Computer System Servicing.

A computer system consists of both hardware and information stored on hardware

that is often called software. The hardware components of computer system are the

electronic and mechanical parts while software components are the data and computer

programs. The major hardware components of a computer system are processor, main

memory, secondary memory, input and output device. For desktop computers these

components are housed in a metal case. Many of the components are connected to the

main circuit board called the Mother Board.

According to Ms. Christie J. Dulfo 12 out of 46 students have passed their NC2

Assessment and it is 26.086% in percentage and the remaining 73.914% failed to pass

their NC2 Assessment and the problem is when it comes to Computer System Servicing

such as Configuring Server. In this case this research aims to enhance the knowledge

and cognitive skills of the 11-ICT students in configuring computer system.

In this study the Instructional Application for Configuring Server Computers

(IACSC) as a guide tool of 11-ICT students focuses on developing an application

regarding to its topic configuring server computer in order to help and guide the students’

in configuring the server computer and also help them to understand more about their

lessons in ICT Strand.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents related literature coming from the data and information of

articles, magazines, newspapers and books that will help in the development of this study.

This also presents studies that would help in providing concepts and ideas in this study.

Review of Related Literature

The study describes a model to assess the acceptance of technology by

academics based on combining self-reported data and objective quantitative

measures which describe the actual utilization of the user. Further, the usability

estimated using the well-known System Usability Scale is integrated within the

developed model to reflect the ease of use for technology. Further, covariate analysis

is conducted to explore how different types of users interact and react to educational

systems for different factors including age, gender, academic qualifications and

experience (Harrati, N. et al 2017).

This study takes a design‐based research approach to explore how applications

designed for mobile devices could support reflection in learning in K‐12 education. Use

of mobile devices is increasing in schools. Most of the educational apps support single‐

person use of interactive learning materials, simulations and learning games. Apps

designed to correspond to collaborative learning paradigms, such as collaborative

progressive inquiry or project‐based learning (Keune, A. et al).

Technologies have dramatically changed the way people gather information, carry

out research and communicate with others worldwide. Technology has removed the
distance obstacle and has made it possible for higher education to effectively teach

anyone. Technology integration is being increasingly used in instruction to improve

teaching and learning. This rapid development of technology integration has presented a

better pattern to find the new teaching models. Consequently, it has a key role in learning

and teaching language skills (Pourhosein Gilakjani, A. 2017).

The rapidly advancing mobile computing technologies along with abundant mobile

software applicatios (“mobile apps” hereafter) make ubiquitous mobile learning possible

(Johnson, L., et al. 2012).

These affordances lead to tremendous potential for innovative uses of mobile

technologies in education. In addition, mobile devices such as smartphones or iPod

touches are vastly gaining popularity due to the availability of various easy to use mobile

software applications (Johnson, L., et al. 2010).

The innovation in mobile apps has raised interests among educators because it

facilitates teaching and learning (Johnson et al., 2012).

As the use of technology evolves in education, an extensive range of new smart

device and digital applications is becoming available to academics (Cuauhtemoc L.,

McGovern, E. 2018).
Review of Related Studies

According to (Raven, J. et al 2016), In this world of rapidly evolving technologies,

educational institution often struggles to keep up with change often requires a state of

readiness at both micro and macro levels. This paper looks at a tertiary institution that

undertook a significant technology change initiative by introducing tablet base

components for teaching a hardware course across nine campuses in the United Arab

Emirates (UAE) using Learning by Doing (LBD) philosophy.

According to (Loague, Averil; Caldwell, Naomi; Balam, Esenc Aug. 2018), Since

the 1970's the implementation of technology into instruction in K-12 schools and higher

education has been an uneven process of acceptance and use despite the fact that digital

literacy and computer skills are now an accepted requirement for anyone to participate in

today's society. This uneven flow of adoption moves along a continuum that can be

described by the Technology Acceptance/Use Continuum (Loague, 2003).

According to (Anderson, Rebecca; Balajthy, Ernest March. 2009), Educators have

moved on from older models of technology-based education that focused on the attributes

and basic uses of the hardware and software available to them. Now they are finding the

necessary creative and innovative ways to harness technology's power for school and

community educational improvement.

This study helped reveal the educational value of mobile app design activities and

the web-based visual programming tool, and the possibility of teaching/learning mobile

app design online. The findings can also encourage educators to explore and experiment

on the potential of incorporating these design learning activities in their respective

settings, and to develop mobile apps for their diverse needs in teaching and learning (Yu-

Chang Hsu and Yu-Hui Ching 2013).

Mobile devices are more powerful and portable nowadays with plenty of useful

tools for assisting people handle daily life. With the advance of mobile technology, the

issue of mobile learning has been widely investigated in e-learning research (Yu-Lin Jeng,

et al. 2010).

The present research revealed that role of mobile learning apps are increasing

among students learning. The results indicated that the mobile learning apps can be very

useful in the higher education environment. Furthermore, the results showed that the

students had adequate knowledge and awareness to use mobile technology and the

Internet in their educational environment. The present study is very useful for the policy

makers to develop course curriculum which may include mobile learning apps as

substitute for classes. The findings emphasize the popularity of mobile learning apps

among students of higher education in India. It also reveals that mobile learning apps can

be used effectively in the higher education (Ansari Mohd 2017).
