Introduction
Rahim Yar Khan is the last district of Punjab situated on the Sindh Punjab boarder.

It is one of the populated district of Punjab. It is consist of four tehsils, RYK,

Liaquat Pur, Khan Pur and Sadiq Abad. This district is divided into three main

physical features: (a) Riverside area, b) canal-irrigated area, and (c) desert area

which is called Cholistan. The Rahim Yar Khan District is bounded on the north

by Muzaffargarh District, on the east by Bahawalpur District, Ghotki

District of Sindh province, and on the west by Rajanpur District.

Brief History.
Rahim Yar Khan situated on the bank of River Indus, was built in 1751 A.D.

during the Sumra Supremacy in Sindh. Previously known as Noshehra was named

Rahim Yar Khan in 1809 by Nawab Muhammad Sadiq Khan after his first son. In

1930 the city was designated as a District Headquarter. Cholistan Desert, Fort

Derawer, Bhong Masjid and Pattan Minara are incient and historical places. Total

population of district Rahim Yar Khan is about 4814006. Total area of district

Rahim Yar Khan is about 11,880 square kilometers.

Languages in Rahim Yar Khan.


In the district was Saraiki, spoken by 62.6% of the population. 27.3% identified

their language as Punjabi, 2.9% – as Urdu and 2.9% – as Sindhi. The local dialect

(see Riasti) belongs to the southern dialect group of Saraiki. Other languages

spoken are Bagri/Choolistani and Haryanvi

No 1, It is the rural area of Tehsil Liaqut pur where mostly, the Punjabi

language is spoken.

No.2 The Liaqut pur city in which Urdu Saraiki and Punjabi Languages are

spoken. The residents of this urban area share linguistic features in their dialects.

No.3 It is the rural area with towns where the Saraiki language is spoken.This

language is known as the Riasti or Bahawalpuri dialect of the Saraiki Language.

No.4 The rural area of Khan pur tehsil where the language spoken by the

residents is Saraiki. Ghazi pur a village of tehsil khan pur people speak sindhi

language with each other. While speaking with the people of other villages they

use Saraiki language.

No.5 The city of Khan pur where Saraiki and Punjabi langauges are spoken.
No.6.This area consists of some villages and desert, Cholistan where Saraiki

Punjabi and Bagri languages (the language of the residents of Cholistan) are used

by the people.

No.7 This area of Tehsil Rahim Yar Khan is the hub of Saraiki speakers. The

language spoken in this area has the mixed dialects of Punjabi and Riasti

languages.

No.8 Rahim Yar Khan city, where Urdu,Saraiki and Punjabi languages are

spoken.Pshto speaking people also present in this urban area of RY Khan.

No.9 this area mostly consist of desert( Cholistan) where the Punjabi and

Cholistani/ Bagri languages are porominent.However small numbers of people of

this area also use Hrayanvi dialect of the (indian)Punjabi language.

No.10.This is the area of Sadiq Abad Tehsil, which is consist of rural areas.

Punjabi language is prominent in this area but Saraiki speakers also reside there.

No.11, The urban area where Saraiki,Punjabi and also Sindhi Language is

spoken. Punjabi and Saraiki are two prominent languages of this area.
No.12.This area share its border with Sindh province. In this area, Sariki and

Sindhi languages are spoken. These languages also share many of their linguistic

features , e,g Pronunciation.

Conclusion

In Rahim Yar Khan is a district where different languages are spoken. Saraiki and

Punjabi languages are the main languages of this district. Saraiki language is the

most prominent language which is spoken throughout the district. Riasti

/Bahwalpuri dialect of Saraiki language is spoken in this area.Hoewever Saraiki

and Punjabi languages share most of their linguistic features with each other due to

prolong language contact.
