Chapter III

METHODS

In this chapter, the researcher presents the methods and procedures

followed in gathering sufficient data for the study. These include the research

design, research participants, and research procedure.

Research Design

Trochim (2005) asserts that a descriptive study is done accordingly such

as collecting information but without changing or manipulating the environment.

He referred to descriptive study as observational studies. The Office of Human

Research Protections (OHRP) also defines a descriptive study as a study that is

not experimental. In human research, a descriptive study can supply information

about the naturally occurring health status, behavior, attitudes or other

characteristics of a particular group. Descriptive studies are done to explain

associations or relationships between things in the world and you.

This study used the descriptive analysis research design, since this study

described, classified, and analyzed the perspective among STEM students about

academic procrastination.

Research Participants

This study is being conducted within the premises of Philippine Women’s

College of Davao, Juna Subdivision, University Avenue, Matina, Davao City.

There are 10 participating students from the STEM Strand, who identified
themselves as Eleison Gabriel Deiparine, Bobby Endresto, “Nana”, Noraline

Baquial, Michelle Pantujan, Antonio Manuel Tayros, “Leonard” and “Johnny”.

This study uses purposive sampling as the method of choosing our said

research participants. According to Crossman (2018) a purposive sampling is a

non-probability sample that is chosen based on the indication of a particular

population and the objective of the study. Purposive sampling can also be

described as judgmental, selective, or subjective sampling.

Research Procedure

The researcher thoroughly observed the significant steps to obtain the

data necessary to draw conclusions for this study.

Fig. 1 Flowchart of the research procedure

1) Asking permission to conduct the study

The researchers presented a letter addressed to Ms. Maria Elena O Licco,

the Principal of the Senior High School students of Philippine Women’s College

of Davao, Juna Subdivision, University Avenue, Matina, Davao City, and seeking

permission to allow the researchers to conduct the study.

2) Conducting an interview in line with the study

The researchers conducted an interview among the STEM students of

Philippine Women’s College of Davao. The researchers wander around the said

school to look for willing students to interview and to know their perspective

towards academic procrastination. The interview includes a set of questions

related to the study and a voice recorder to record the participants’ answer.

3) Analyzing and interpreting participants’ perspective

The researchers did the analyzing and interpreting by listening to the

recorded interview of the research participants and encoding them for further

understanding.

4) Validating the results of the Analysis

The researchers presented a letter to Ms., Faculty Staff of the Senior High

School Unit, Philippine Women’s College of Davao, University Avenue, Matina,

Davao City, who reviewed and validated the analysis of the data or the results of

the study.

5) Drawing conclusions from the findings

From the reviewed and validated data, the researcher drew conclusions to

answer the questions investigated in this study.
