SELF-POWERED
OVERCURRENT PROTECTION RELAY
PIE-3N
1.- OBJECTIVE
This user's handbook is intended to aid the configuration and use of the PIE-3N overcurrent
protection relay.
This three-phase overcurrent protection relay is particularly suitable for use in non-fused
Medium Voltage cubicals or compartments in transformer or distribution stations where there
are no auxiliary power-supply batteries.
3.- OPERATION
The PIE-3N relay is used in conjunction with 3 transformers of type IFG-8, IFG-7, AGD-12
or AGD-24, whichever is most suitable, which allow the phase- and homopolar line currents
to be measured and which supply the power required for the relay's circuits and the external
trip coil. As a result, no auxiliary power supply is required.

4.- ADJUSTMENT
The following independent settings or trip-points are available on the front panel of the PIE-
3N relay:
Any of the above functions with the exception of phase overcurrent (I>) can be annulled by
selecting setting “0“ on the corresponding rotary switch.
The tables below show the available settings in terms of the nominal line current IN.

When an overcurrent condition is detected in the line the PIE-3N relay waits until the set time
delay has expired and then sends a series of tripping pulses to the trip coil, which opens the
circuit breaker.
The series of pulses continues until either the primary current is interrupted or the fault
condition disappears.
The PIE-3N may also be powered from a 230 Vac supply. When this supply input is used, the
protection relay may be used for either three-phase or single-phase measurements as low as
10% of IN (the minimum neutral adjustment).
There is also an external trigger input (for use with thermal triggers or Buchholz protection
devices, for example) that requires 230 Vac at 50 Hz. The power supply must be connected in
order to use the external trigger input.

Homopolar protection
To set the homopolar current trip to operate when this current exceeds 10% of IN, we
calculate the settings as follows:
I 1.443
= = 0.099
In 14.5
To trigger the relay when the homopolar current is greater than 10% of IN, we must
select the closest entry in the table, which in this case is 0.10 IN, trip point 1, which
will give us a real homopolar trip current of 0.10 x 14.5 = 1.45 A, or, in percentage

The PIE-3N relay is shipped in its box complete with the corresponding transformers. This
packing guarantees its safety under normal handling conditions for this type of equipment.
If it is not to be installed immediately, it should be stored in its packing, unopened and in an
environment that may be considered as "interior", away from rain, dust, vibrations, etc.
If the packing is seen to be damaged or any damage is suspected due to rough handling during
transport, the manufacturer and the insurance company should be informed immediately.
The instructions given below will provide optimum results from the PIE-3N, avoiding any
risks due to incorrect installation.
7.1. INSPECTION
Remove the PIE-3N from its packing and inspect it visually, looking for possible damage that
may have been caused during transport.
Check that the transformers supplied with the PIE-3N relay are of the type ordered.
Following this, install the relay in the panel cut-out, which should have been prepared
previously. Once the unit is fixed into the panel, no other mechanical operations should be
performed on either the relay or the panel.
