WordPress Plugin: Codestyling Localization (en)

While get in touch with WordPress you will find out, that the initial delivery package comes only with english
localization. If you want WordPress to show your native language, you have to provide the appropriated
language file at languages folder. This files will be used to replace the english text phrases during the process
of page generation.
This translation capability has the origin at the gettext functionality which currently been used across a wide
range of open source projects. The basics of this system are documented Free Software Foundation (FSF) -
GNU Project - gettext and can be read there.
The basis for translations are language files defined as *.po format (portable) or *.mo format (machine
object), which helps software to get translated on the fly.
The *.po files are pure text format and must meet a dedicated specification to be analyzable by software
programs. Normally you would take a texteditor for translation or a specific editor like PoEdit, which have to
be installed on your PC first. Using such an editor you can translate *.po files and generate the resulting *.mo
files out of. All software products based on gettext are only able to deal with *.mo files at production level
(live mode).

In my opinion the effort to localize as example a plugin is too high, because you need the plugin at your local
PC and a PoEdit installed. You will translate some phrases, generate a *.mo file and finally upload it. But after
inspectation in real live you will encounter such things like to big label texts or small mistakes. And you will
repeat this always including that file upload again.

This recurring process is counterproductive and time wasting. So i tried to create a solution which integrates
into administration GUI of WordPress, can simply manage and translate any component. The translation
results can be controlled immediately using a second browser tab containing the target page.

The Plugin Mainpage - The Beginning

If you have plugin installed and activated, you will get a new menu entry inside “Manage” which is named
“Localization“. If you choose the entry, you will get the complete overview about all components of your
WordPress installation, that are gettext ready or having already language files on board.
This plugin inspects WordPress itself, all plugins out of plugins folder and also all themes out of theme folder.
Only those components will be listed that are really gettext ready and can handle translation files.

You can perform several actions per component (WP |

Plugin | Theme) and language. If your choosen component already have had translation files, they will be
listed with informations about. Files marked with white indicates, that those are not existing.
A red marked file indicates, that it permits readonly access and thatswhy it can’t be written.

Files marked with green color will show you, that you can read and write it.
All read-only files can be turned into read-write access, if you click at the red symbol. This will be done at
several internal steps. First the plugin tries to set the permissions to rw-/r–/r– at this file. If this is not enough
to be able to write onto, it tries next to set the permissions to rw-/rw-/r– and if this also fails, finally the
permissions rw-/rw-/rw- will be tried. If all that fails totally, you will get an error message box and you have
to adjust it using your FTP account. At success case the color of file changes to green and you can use it. This
permission change feature is only provided for read-only files.

The Plugin Mainpage - Add New Language

 If your prefered language doesn’t exist, you can simply add it. The occuring dialog lets
you choose your new language but will skip those already existing for the target component. After you have
filled the last translator field (defaults to current logged on WordPress user) and made your choise, the related
*.po file will be creates at the target components folder. The new language immediately shows up at language
list and can be handled now by further actions. The new file doesn’t contain any catalog entry except the
correct file header nessessary for translations.

The Plugin Mainpage - Rescan PHP Source Files

After you have added your new language you will need the text phrases to be able to
translate something. Rescanning the PHP source files extracts this text phrases and saves them at *.po file
(quite similar to PoEdit). But the plugin performs an intelligent search / analysis process and scans only
component related files.

If you want as example rescan the WordPress itself using PoEdit you will get a mixed translation file,
containing also any custom plugin or theme phrases.
But this plugin performs intelligent: in case of WordPress itself the scan process skips the complete plugin
and theme folder and only explicite adds Akismet and the themes provided at WordPress install package. This
ensures that only WordPress related phrases will be attached to that language file and never attach the phrases
of plugin XY too.

This process can take some seconds upto minutes, depending on your connection speed and the count of files
to be processed. The progress will be shown until all has been scanned. After successful rescan the *.po file
will contain all found phrases based at gettext functionality. If you run the scan process at an already existing
*.po file, the file gets updated.
No worry about maximum execution time setting of PHP. This process is ajax driven, so you will not have
problems related to runtime restrictions.

The Plugin Mainpage - Delete Language

Deleting a language really implies physical erase! Thatswhy you will get a dialog and must confirm this
action. After confirmation both files *.po and *.mo will be erased from harddisk. You can abort the
confirmation dialog and avoid erase by clicking upper right corner close button.

The Plugin Mainpage - Launch Translation Editor

If you hit the “Edit” action, the view switches into language editor mode. This build-in editor allows the
translation of any contained catalog phrase and also produces the *.mo file on your needs.

The Translation Editor

 The editor has been designed as comfortable as possible and permits the complete
language file catalog editing. After launch it displays the first 100 entries as default out of the *.po file. You
can choose the count of entries per page and also the page itself by your needs.

Every entry at the language file will be shown at it’s own row. The left column shows upto 2 possible items:

PHP symbol - shows the source files containing the text and opens a preview dialog at source file and
line
comment symbol - if the file contains a comment, it will be displayed here

The next 2 columns containing the original text and the translation target text. The last column provides some
actions, currently only the action: edit entry.
If you edit an entry, you will get one out of 2 possible edit dialogs. The gettext functionality supports on the
one hand side simple text phrases with 1:1 relationship. On the other hand side it supports also plural forms
but they have 2:n relationship. The english language knows singular and plural. But several target languages
have more or less differences, some support only 1 form (2:1) but other may support upto 4 different
pluralizations (2:4). Thatswhy a special dialog will be shown, that handles this fact and shows the formula
behind the plural index calculation too.

As can be seen at the screenshots, the dialog supports also translations assisted by Google Translate API. But
it will be available only, if the target language is supported by Google. Clicking this link translates the original
text by Google Translate API and writes the result into the translation target field. You should handle this as
suggestion because in most cases you have to rework it.

Event though Google Translate keeps the HTML markup unchanged, it may often happen, that formatter like
%s gets exploded and filled by space character. This is dangerous at formatting functions inside PHP, because
the values to be later inserted won’t show up or you script may crash. This also happens if you have
backslashed text. The backslashes gets multiplied. You have always to check those translation results
carefully.

Both search fields at table head can be used to find matches at the choosen column. This is an exact match
search, keep in mind. During typing the seach phrase the number of shown target rows will be reduced on the
fly. This search runs always over all language file entries and shows all matches.

Pressing the button “generate mo-file” converts the edited *.po file and saves it additional as new binary
*.mo file. An existing *.mo file will be overwritten. In success case the change date beside the button will be
refreshed and highlighted.
If you open an additional browser tab with your page subject of your translation, you can check instantly if
your changes looks as expected. This online control is useful because sometimes the provided space for labels
is not wide enough and you have to find an shorter translation phrase.
All entered translations will be saved during pressing the “Save” button at dialog. Your changed phrases will
always made persistent at the *.po file. So you can continue your translation later on too without loosing
anything.

Plugin Limits
This plugin currently only supports languages, that have been stored at internal definition sets. This has been
done to ensure the correct usage of plural form definitions automatically. Secondly it supports only languages
having the country specifier included such xx_XX. Thatsways following language examples won’t be detected
nor supported:

sitemap-ja_JA.UTF-8.po
sitemap-ja_SJIS.po

This will be part of later versions and gets a complete extension than.

Plugins that are gettext ready but having no language file contained yet may store the new created languages
files at the main folder of plugin instead of its dedicated language folder. This will happen if the language path
can’t be detected qualified from source code. If you provide at least an emtpy language file at the target
plugins language folder, the correct path will be extracted from this existing file and new languages will now
be created a the right sub folder. Upcomming versions will introduce this as choise inside the creation dialog
for such cases.

At some plugins the text domain can’t be detected. This happens if the plugin writer did not use text or
constants for the textdomain. In such cases the name of the plugin file (without the .php extension) will be
used. For this issue i have currently no solution.

Installation

Decompress the plugin and upload the complete folder csp-po-edit with all content as
sub folder at /wp-content/plugins/. Now you will find the plugin at the menu “Plugins” named Codestyling
Localization and can be activated.

During activation the plugin checks the required WordPress and PHP version. If at least one of this tests fails,
the plugin can not be activated and reports the issue as can be seen at screenshot.

The plugin does not require any configuration and does not change your database nor content. It works “out of
the box” if you meet the above named requirements.

Hint: Because sometimes the question appears, that plugins or themes doesn’t get detected as translatable, this
often caused be the fact, that they use variables as textdomain specifier. If the author would have been using
constants, the parser would be able to find them. Example:

If you think about a how to use demo as flash video, i’m working on that and will publish this as soon as
possible. I hope, that all possibly open questions will be answered than.
I also think about an english tutorial, how to get a hard coded plugin/theme gettext ready.

unbelievable and great plugin. I would love this also as general PHP aplication for including in other projects
using gettext.
I have just small bits for improving
a) possibility to copy the original text (i use it almost always when there are variables in the text, and for some
abbreviations), or text from other language
b) possibility to copy the text for plural(s) from singular where available
c) sort by differences in the texts, + copy, so easy translating the same or very simillar texts

anyway it is definitely great great great, one of my top 3 plugins

Thanks for this feedback and the suggestion about improvement. The points a) and b) sounds link a good
idea, i will support it with next upcomming version, hopefully. The last point c) is not really specific, do
you want to:
- sort all rows by text compare driven by column ?
- sort of search hits by text compare driven by column ?
- anything else i did not understand ?

hmm, that’s hard question. Do not know the best sollution, maybe you will imagine some.
I will first try to describe the problem: there are many sentences, which differs just by one word, etc.
e.g.:
Files:wp-admin/edit-page-form.php:235
Setting a password will require people who visit your blog to enter the above password to view this
page and its comments.
Files:wp-admin/edit-form-advanced.php:339
Setting a password will require people who visit your blog to enter the above password to view this post
and its comments.
So it would be great to show those simillar sentences to the user, and even allow copy translations
between them, so he would keep the translations consistent. Maybe the best would be to show it
somwhere directly in the edit window, but i do not know how it would be possible (you would have to
compare a string with all the others and match the ones with high simillarity etc. and i do not know if it
is even possible and fast enough)

Now it’s clear what you think about. Both sentence differe only in ( page | post ) but the rest remains
similar. This may be a job for phonetic similarity (soundex search) cause this sentences may produce
a very high matching value. Direct text compare may also an option, but how to decide similarity ?
I will think about it and provide a solution if i found a reasonable way to do this.

Good point, and would not be very difficult except you edit the last one on page. After “Save and Next
Untranslated” the main screen has to switch the page automatically to step into first row now becomes new
subject of translation.
It’s now on the road map for upcomming versions.

As long as this Projects are GPL too, there is no reason to deny the porting. It should be possible to adapt it
into several CMS and Blog systems beside WP based at PHP.
I have a question too: would it be possible to get a translation file at your native language for this plugin
too?
I would pre-package it at next update and remark your work at the plugins Acknowledgement page at
wordpress.org (needs link and text you prefere)

And it would be great if i could change which language would be then used as the “from” language (as for
many languages it is better to translate from other language then english - best is to select the language from
the same language-family)

Sorry, i was on vacation for 2 weeks an have to compensate now the freezing shock
Google blocks IP’s, if they abuse the translation interface! If the plugin would try to translate the whole
language file at once (some plugins have more than 500 terms like mailing list plugins), this results in
abuse detection and IP blocking by Google Translation.
Because of Cross Site Script ing Protection feature of most browsers the Google API will be called by you
domain machine and only routed to the page o plugin (like proxy to go around protection). This would
block you complete domain for this service. Thatswhy i have no intention to implement it in this way.
The selection of source language may be a good idea but this could only be a work-arround. Basically the
main language has been defined as english. Choosing a different can only be an other mo or po file. But
how should the plugin detect, that as example the french mo is up to date ?

Hi, I am using this bran new theme… check it out here http://blogueros.tv/... i have rescanned all files but as
you can see i am not capturing a lot of the english strings. Also in the localization page i don’t see the active
theme. I see many themes except the one active. Thoughts?

This theme can’t be freely downloaded so i can’t check the reason qualified.
I think, the theme is like may pay-ware hard coded in english and not prepared to support different
language files. If the theme doesn’t occure at the main page of localization plugin, than it doesn’t try to
load a language file and this may be reason for impossible translation too.
If you could provide the theme by mail (i will only use it for investigation reason) than you would get more
detailed informations about.

all the active themes and many of the plugins i have don’t appear in the translation page (wp-admin/edit.php?

Thanks for this fantastic work. How long did you spend?
I would really like to use your work for another cms. It could be great to get a basic version without wordpress
for guys like me which would like to understand and reused it. If you agree of course!!!

I tested a little bit your program and if I understand well the argument in the function to transale (_e(”hello
…”)) must be a string, not a variable.

hello I love your plugin but I’d like to sugest some improvements:

- I am using it on wpmu 2.6.1 and it works perfectly. The only problem I have is that it is not really picking up
all plugins, so I wanted to back check where it looks for plugins. wpmu also stores plugins in the folder mu-
plugins instead of plugins as those are automatically activated. Also maybe an option where one could specify
additional folders would be awesome, as in wpmu installations sometimes plugins are put in different folders
i.e. I have another folder inside wp-content called admin-plugins which are only activated in the backend, no
need to call them the whole time in the front end too

CSS changes and also the initial support of WPMU plugins folder (standard folder, not the hack based
admin plugins folder).

for plugins, not running from there. if it is run from there all users could create/delete localizations, etc.

The new version currently been tested runs out of normal plugins folder as before but it scans now the mu-
plugins folder additionally. All WPMU plugins will be listed at new main categorie and will be named as
WPMU Plugins. Also the WordPress main localization shows now 2 version numbers in case of WPMU:
the original WP version and the WPMU version.
The MU Plugins will be supported only as single file *.php, any subfolders will be ignored.
I think, this is what you expect, isn’t it ? (comming soon, next few days)

almost perfect can’t you let the scanning of subfolder active? plugins don’t run out of subfolders inside mu-
plugins, but a lot of plugins are adapted to wpmu in the way that the main plugin file is located inside mu-
plugins folder while the rest of the plugin resides inside a folder best example would be donncha’s wp suepr
cache, this is an excerpt from the isntall instructions:

# If you are using WordPress MU you will need to install this in ‘wp-content/mu-plugins/wp-super-cache/’
and the file wp-cache.php must be copied into the mu-plugins directory.

This is by design (concept) of WP. All plugins be located at main plugin folders (plugins or mu-plugins)
will be handled as single file plugins. The WP core supports sub folders to be able to run plugins out of
them but requires also the main plugin file be located inside.
After inspectation of WPMU code i found, that management of mu-plugins has been coded very terrible!
I would have expected, that it also supports scanning and using sub folders as ordinary plugin folder does,
but it is only a HACK in my opinion. That’s why i dont support yet sub folders.
The cache plugin you named doesn’t support any localization, all text phrases are hard coded inside. So it
would not be translateable without code changes.
I would prefere a re-written mu-plugin interface inside WMPU version, that must supports:
- new administration GUI for site admin
- configuration option, if a WPMU plugin may run in backend / frontend or both
- subfolder handling like ordinary plugin support.
If i have more time, i will contact the WPMU team to present a solution, that is more similar to normal
plugin management but designed for mu-plugins.

Sorry, my mistake. Because i simulate the mu-plugins using ordinary WP version, i don’t get the fact, that
the array was not present.
Please insert as short fix (word arround) at line 441 following:
$const_list = array();
I will update the version again this night to reflect this too. -> leads to 1.61 than.

Ok, i have tested it now. Because i have no permission to use Google Chrome, i didn’t gave it a try. After
testing it at a friends system, i see what you mean. Some links would not be supported by chrome, they
don’t execute onlick() handler. I will cross check this using new Safari too, cause Chrome and Safari share
the same WebKit base. If it’s WebKit issue, it should occur at Safari too.
Nevertheless i will make it working with the next minor update comming. Thanks for reporting.

Appendix: After searching the reason and many Google requests the problem is the interoperability
between Chrome and prototype.js (and potential other js libraries). As long as Chrome won’t be able to
work with the same library other browsers are able, i won’t spend time therefore. Moreover this would
require a patch of WP shipped js files, get damaged at next WP update again. So i will update the Plugin
Page to state that Chrome is not working.

Hi! A great work of coding, thanks a lot! That said, aren’t you using non-standard locals?

WP Deutschland got it wrong in the first place with de_DE (instead of de-DE with a dash) and now you’re
forcing speakers of other languages to use proprietary codes which no software in the world can recognize
when included in the lang=”…” or xml:lang=”…” attributes.

Moreover, the RFC 4646 states, “Interoperability is best served when all users use the same language tag in
order to represent the same language. (…) Subtags should only be used where they add useful distinguishing
information,” meaning, for French one should tag a document with fr rather than fr-CH. The document also
recommends the use of script subtags zh-Hant/zh-Hans for Traditional/Simplified Han Characters
respectively, as opposed to region subtags (zh-TW, zh-HK, zh-CN, zh-SG, …).

Given the number of language codes available, it would be hard to offer an exhaustive list anyway. So, rather
than forcing users to select an incorrect language tag from your list, extract their bloginfo(’language’) defined
in wp-config.php and use it as a default.

Sorry, you are not right. The implementation of WordPress core function get_locale() is written at /wp-
includes/l10n.php line: 28ff (WP2.7) as:

As you can see, WPLANG is been used as locale (in missing case as ‘en_US’) and with notation of locales
used for dealing so.
As references please look at Debian supported locales, DB 2 locale settings, Google Adsence API locales
and many other more (PHP setlocale() function as example).
There have to be made a difference between locales and language codes used in HTML / XML. They are
different in notation and you should be aware that xml:lang is something different than a locale code.
Selection of used language out of blog settings only is not a good idea, because there are some user familar
with at least 2 languages other than english and they are able to translate 2 language files. That’s why it can
be freely choosen.
I understand your wish of interoperability but it’s not the fault of WPD, that it had been introduced, it’s
common definition made years ago as web work was not so expansive as today.

Thank you for the links, you are right, I didn’t know about how Debian handles locales internally. For
use on the internet, however, this remains non-standard. On the Adsense site which you are referring to,
it says that only “a few of the codes (such as zh_CN) contain locale-specific codes”, and that these
could just as well have a hyphen-minus in lieu of an underscore. There is no mention of de_DE, fr_Fr,
… in their list whatsoever. It would be more specific than necessary.

Many of the existing localizations for WP have been using locales which do not correspond with your
scheme, and rightly so. If they don’t want to alter their 2-letter language code, how can they use your
excellent plugin? Maybe you could provide an input field so one could add more languages to the list.

(On a side note, I oppose the idea of regarding languages as a “national property”, and the W3C doesn’t
recommend the use of flags for designating languages rather than countries/regions.)

Sorry, if my modest suggestion came across harshly which was not my intention.

I know the issue of forcing locale specific languages, especially it generates headache to users rely
on plugins like Gengo or qTranlate which are using 2 letter language code specifiers instead.
Changing the behavoir from locale to lang code would also deny the WordPress 2.7 autoupdate
process, where you no can choose the normal en_US or your locale version of WP. This depends on
locales by design.
Nevertheless i worte a blog article (german at the moment, english translation comming soon) that i
will setup a new roadmap for version 2.0 in january. I will maintain the already 1.x trunk but i will
restucture the plugin internally to be more modular and better to maintain. During this process the
2.x trunk will also be able to deal with user given specifiers (locale or language codes) and should
also able to deal with the japan special needs like ja_JA.UTF-8.po or ja_SJIS.po
The release of first 2.x version is planned latest march 2009.

(The flags has been introduced because of locale usage. The country is part of each locale specifier
so the flags can be used. Indeed, if this will be extended in future, i have to thinks about, if it has to
be handled in an other way.)

I don’t know if you like bugs or suggestions here, but here goes:
- There are some less precise language codes. I can only speak for Norwegian, where the correct codes are
nb_NO for Norwegian bokmål and nn_NO for Norwegian nynorsk. It would be nice if you could fix this.
- The editor is good for small projects, but rather cumbersome for things like eg. Wordpress itself. Quick
navigation possibilities, preferably with shortcuts to navigate through strings, would be perfect - in short,
more of Poedit’s capabilities, please
- Once I have finished translating your plugin, would you like to have the translation for inclusion in future
versions? Do tell me.

Otherwise, thanks for an already useful and potentially essential plugin.

I’ve got a problem: After moving blogs from Windows Server 2003 Web Edition to Windows Web Server
2008 I get nothing in the “Languages” column. The only thing I have got in this column is when a plugin has
amigous language folders, asking me to select a proper folder. Otherwise completely empty.

Codestyling Localization: 1.70

WordPress: 2.7
PHP: 5.2.8
MySQL: 5.1
WP locale: nb_NO
Browsers tested: Firefox 3.0 and IE7.

Before: IIS 6.0 with FastCGI

Now: IIS 7.0 with FastCGI
Same plugins as before. Nothing else changed.
How may I now use this plugin? What I do is having the same setup at the old server, edit and then copy the
.mo file to the new server.

Small bug found: codestyling-localization.php line 100: Warning: Undefined constant csp_po_install_plugin
(fixed by adding proper quotes around the function name as argumet to function-exists). But this has nothing
to do with my problem.

I’m astonished, that it won’t work at your new environment. I have tested it carefully with WP 2.7, so this
may not the case of fault. Because you have stated that you’ve copied the files, did you copy them from
NTFS to NTFS now not having the proper rights (user) been set ?
May be this is an issue of accessing the files by owner/rights issue. Something similar may occur at
safemode systems running on linux. Nevertheless I will have a look at the column code to review potential
coding issues contained.
The warned constant name (missing function call quoting) will be soon updated.

Thanks for the quick reply and for the suggestions.

My wp-content folder, wich contains all themes, plugins and languages, are writeable (NTFS Modify
allowed, nothing disallowed). All individual .mo and .po files checked to have these inherited attributes.

WP 2.7-files was not copied, but downloaded, and then ACL “allow modify” was set for wp-content
folder. Database was backup’ed at the source and restored on the new server. Some plugins copied, the
rest downloaded or updated from the WP repository. And when copying NTFS files from one drive (or
server) to aother, they all lose their ACL attributes and inherit new ones from their (new) parent folders.
The “owner” is “Administrators”, but no owner rights attributes are set, so this has no rights
implications (as in most cases on NTFS). I have also tested actual user rights for the impersonated
anonymous web user and the identity of the worker process pool (user “Network Service”). So I can’t
see this as the source for this strange behaviour.

PHP “safe mode” is not activated. File upload works fine. PHP build is “no thread safe” as
recommended for IIS FastCGI.

I generally have run a lot of fine PHP applications under IIS on my Windows Servers for many years
and they perform very good with the new FastCGI concept, also used (installed) on Windows 2003
Server (IIS6).

If this plugin for some reason decides not to display anything in the Languages column, please make it
indicate why not, instead of just making a blank table cell, as it seems to do now. I may have missed
some requirement in the setup.

I’m very grateful for any help and that you will be looking into the code in search for this.

I’m still at investigation after received your screenshot. I was suprised, that the column completely
disappearing, because there is no code included to hide it! This could be a problem of stylesheets
(classnames) used by on other plugin hides it now, but i’m not sure at the moment. This missing
column indicates normally, if something went wrong (like not writable files or missing language
folder).
This is a strange view, i will try now to reproduce it locally, further information will follow asap.

additional note: I found the issue, it’s related to short_open_tag=”Off” setting at php.ini. I missed
at 3 places the correct PHP tagging, so this column was skipped at if case. This has been repaired
with version 1.71 and should now work as expected.

You can add it at includes/locale-definitions.php.

Attention This file is UTF-8 encoded, please only change it having an editor supporting this!
It requires an entry at $csp_l10n_langs where the short term lang is mapped to correct locale term.
The 2nd modification will be needed at $csp_l10n_login_label, where you should add the correct written
term “language” in your native language.
The $csp_l10n_plurals contains the mapping of short term language to the pluralization formula needed for
you language. If unclear, please the englisch language as copy.
And last one you will need to add a new description array to $csp_l10n_sys_locales to define you language
for the system.
Than it should be possible to use it. (the next major release won’t need such a config any longer).

I tried to localize a theme page and it was great. So, i switched to the theme i preferred using the Appearance
> Theme via WordPress 2.7 admin panel. Then i go to start localize the theme. But the theme set remains
unchanged. It still linked to the old theme set i previously test-drive on. I tried deactivated the plug-in, delete
its directory in the plug-in directory and upload a fresh copy. But it still the old theme i test-drive localisation.
Any advice ?

It sounds like your prefered theme doesn’t support localization and loading a translation file. All themes
listed at the theme section support translation wether they are active or not. Missing your theme there
implies, that i has no translation support.
Please ask the author for translation support of this theme.

have the flag and everything else there and the .po files can be edited if they exist, but one cannot generate a
fa_IR.po from scratch.

Hello Heiko, I’m awed by your fantastic plugin. In fact, I’ve just scrapped poEdit and have started using it
right now to finish localization of a plugin. Now, I just ran into a funny typo in the Spanish language file for
your plugin (well-translated by the way, compliments to the translator/localizer!) so I’ve correct that and
included that in the twin set that you can download here(edit by codestyling: already downloaded and
published at 1.72). (I filed that under “funny” because it translated “State” with “Country” while it actually
referred to whether a given plugin was active or not… With apologies to the translator - it’s just one of those
things…)

of 1.x version would not be recommended. Because i’m currently writing the 2.x version trunc with new
OOP based redesign, this would be the better source base doing this portable step.
I will put this to my idea’s list but this may take at least until Q3 this year to start initial phase and requires
also a bit more spare time as i have current.

In the mean time, and after playing with your great plugin, I want to give you some suggestions for the
next version:

- Support for Role manager, allowing to control wich users can access to the translation feature.
- Adding permission management for the translations, to allow to set individually wich user or users can
edit a certain translation.
 This way anyone could ask for help to their users to translate something, and the admin could set
translation teams for each plugin to translate.

Currently i have limit the ability to admin role only, because there are a lot of things to specifiy and
to check, if i would allow a per user / role editing. I think, WordPress itself needs slightly different
rule set than themes and plugins, because this may have impacts to proper function of admin
interface.
Themes are presented to visitors, so it’s also an other kind of rights management needed.
But nevertheless, this is already at my todo list but has currently the lowest priority at redesign. After
new version will be published, i think, i will deal with the user / role management more specific until
first service release.

The problem is, the backslash-key and the yen-key (symbol for Japanese currency) are the same key
assignment in Japanese.

I found a little problem today, which might have something to do with the Codestyling Localization plugin. It
seems as though I have created or perhaps modified some of the language files with C.L. These files are, if I
am right, saved through Apache. If I try to update them or delete them for whatever reason by FTP, I do not
have the necessary permissions.

Is there any way that C.L. could save files etc. with me as owner? Would that be a feature suggestion?

Yes, indeed this is a problem. Because the files been generated with the user connected to the running
script, this may be in case of safe_mode provider settings the user wwwrun and the FTP user may not be
able to delete it.
I currently try to find an appropriated way to do this (also WP auto-update has the same problems with
several provider). But this may also require a way using FTP load/save for updates and may also slowdown
the scan process.
Definitely i will cope with this in near future but for now only following work arround may solve it:
1.) download the “undeletable” files by FTP to your local machine.
2.) delete them using the delete button of C.L. (same user as created)
3.) upload them by FTP (should now get your FTP user as owner).

Aside from Heiko’s perfectly valid workaround there’s another, completely different approach that you
could use for localization of WordPress files: instead of localizing against a “live” server, you can set up a
staging server on your computer, and replicate your installation there. If you’re running MacOS, Linux or
Solaris you could use the very lightweight XAMPP for that; if you’re running a Windows machine, you
can use the featherweight Uniform Server (a complete AMPP - Apache, mySQL5, PHP5 and Perl - in
under 32MB!) so that:

1) You won’t have the permissions problem

2) If something goes terribly wrong it doesn’t affect your server (in fact, worse case scenario for UniServer
is to just delete the folder with the entire install - no fuss no muss!)
3) The speed at which you’re working, i.e. at which your translation shows up in your locally served
“website” is such that I frankly recommend everyone to go that route - it’s lightning fast.
4) This method puts Codestyling Localization to work in a highly effective and efficient way: you’re
working with CL against a real-time WordPress install, so you can instantly see the effect of what you’re
doing against an exact replica of your real site, and you’re working at the maximum speed of your CPU
and hard drive, compared to bandwidth restrictions you may have while working over the Net.

Once you’re satisfied, upload the .po/.mo files to your real (production) server and… Presto! Translation(s)
up and running - but without the debugging phase, and no permission issues at all. Just a tip…

Here’s a suggestion for v2: include a CapitalizationPottyTrainer function! One of the old (but very sore)
complaints of localizers is the issue of dates: names of months, weekdays, etc. which aren’t capitalized in
many languages - yet because of the English original, propagate into an awful lot of translations, leading to
something visually as annoying as the proverbial nail on the blackboard.

Now there are several ways of dealing with changing the case of strings (or string elements) in PHP, but I’d
love to see some kind of shortcode or tag wrapper that one can use within a translated string, so as to indicate
how the wrapped element (word) needs to be capitalized, if different from the canonical (i.e. US English)
version. This proposed / theoretical solution provides the necessary flexibility to deal with places where such
(normally) lowercase words have to be capitalized; think e.g. about the archive list of months, which look
weird in lowercase. I’m not a PHP coder, but in my estimation this would imply an additional plugin of sorts
that has to be loaded into WP, so as to handle (parse) the wrapped terms. What I’m much less sure about is
how to do that, because parsing wrapped words on each page load seems like an atrocity, and yet I can’t figure
out another, more efficient way to do that “case management” where necessary.

Or, perhaps, some way to highlight the plugin code affected by a wrapper, so that changes can be made in that
code; a bit in the way that localized currency, date and plurals in strings are handled, with a separate string for
different scenarios. I wish someone at Automattic would pay attention to this issue… In principle this
shouldn’t be too difficult to tackle, as long as a systematic approach is picked… And it would undoubtedly
help a lot in opening up the tremendous vault of available themes also into other languages, because there’s a
certain tendency to stick only to those available when mercilessly hacked for translation (or directly developed
for a certain language)

Hmm, this is a problem, if there are specific words inside a sentence to be capitalized. But it could be
achieved by using CSS and span Elements inside:
<span class=”capitalize”>some words to capitalize</span>
with a CSS style:

CSS

1 .capitalize {
2 text-transform:capitalize
3 }

timing: 0.010s

The text-transform rule works on every major browser and it supports:

capitalize
uppercase
 lowercase
none

Using this in that way the theme designer can easily define it for the look an feel.
The only other way with high performance would be a dictionary to be used to identify such words during
translation and autocorrect them. (Something like Open Office Dictionary can be attached to Firefox).

Yes, I’ve thought about CSS - which has the added advantage that it’s a client-side solution, so it hardly
burdens the server. And I suppose in practice that’s good enough; wrapping the bits in span tags for lowercase
conversion can deliver the same result (it’s typically converstion to lowercase). In that case, wrapping with the
lowercase styling class would be great. Anyway, I digress: here’s the updated Spanish translation for
Codestyling Localization v1.80.

Fantastic Plugin - all we need now is for some way to leverage everyone’s translation efforts and share
previously translated files - do a “scan” for matched translations first and/or provide a way to load up
dictionaries.

say initially use what ever files are in the current instance, also allow a dictionary area, locally or externally.

Hello codestyling. I have just started to use your plugin and I have noticed that it works ok with the plugins I
have installed; all but one. Plugin “invite-friends” does not respond to localization. po & mo files are created
but the english messages are still there. I am spanish.

I hope you can help me as I have tried to look for a similar plugin but I haven’t found it. Of course, I could
“hard-code” the translation but I want to be able to update the plugin when it is available.

Tell me if you need further info.

[FIXED]

Plugin had this line of code:

load_plugin_textdomain(’invite-friends’, WP_CONTENT_DIR.’/plugins/invite-friends’);

Replaced with:

load_plugin_textdomain(’invite-friends’, PLUGINDIR.’/’.dirname(plugin_basename(__FILE__)),
dirname(plugin_basename(__FILE__)));

I am not sure what is the difference but, after comparing with a working plugin, I tried to change this line
structure. I suppose that this issue is a bug of the “invite-friends” plugin, not yours. I will try to contact
developer.

No, the development isn’t stopped but delayed because of personal time management issues
And the 2nd point of delay is caused by WordPress itself, with 2.8 some changes will be introduced
regarding the internal language file mangement and handling. I have to check and test it carefully to avoid
problems by using the plugin.
I hope to continue end of may and finish it mid of june.

Hi, this is a brilliant plugin, I have been able to use it nearly perfectly except for one problem. How can I get
my links that are not generated by Wordpress to be translated and have the ‘?lang=’ querystring appended to
it?

For example, I placed a link in my header using the normal html markup, , but whenever the page is translated
the link stays the same. I have seen your functions that have been hooked into Wordpress’ permalink structure
but I am unable to make any modification for this to work because of my tight deadline.

What do you rekon I do?

I use a modified plugin from this french author http://www.jide.fr/ named yammyamm. Each post is
unique and has it’s own id and also normal rewrite rule. The plugin uses 2 main categories to separate
between german and english and keeps trac of all necessary places. That’s why i can not directly flip
between eng/ger version of the same article but i can deactivate the plugin and have a safe and clean
database, only the articles are displayed mixed but content still remains unmodified.

I have tested it with 2.8-beta1-11436 and Firefox. i can’t find a problem (except that scanning WordPress
itself doesn’t find all new language specific, non standard gettext marker). This will be updated as soon as
final 2.8 is available. For Google Chrome, it is still not working because of some issues inside Chromes JS
engine. This has also be stated at the compatible Browser list at the beginning of this article.

Hello,

Just tried this plugin out, as a way to allow a client to add more theme translations - seems to work great so
far! Many thanks for building and releasing it, much appreciated.

I have a query though: when adding a new language for my theme, it ends up in the root of that theme folder,
although all previous languages (two by default) are stored in a /languages folder. Is there any way to define
where the new translations should be kept? I find it’s a lot neater when theme .php files are kept in the root
and any other additional files are stored in their own folders (languages, css, images).

Support at Themes with subfolders will be subject of the rewritten v2 of this plugin. Unfortunately not all
supported versions of WordPress allow by using load_theme_textdomain to specify a dedicated path. WP
2.5 as example only loads theme translations from main folder. That’s why all theme related translations
will be created at the main folder.

I have tested a small plugin with translation and created a nl_NL language file for. I scanned the plugin and
afterwards tested the Google API translation on this.

For example for source field “save changes” i got the translation “Wijzigingen opslaan“. I’m not sure if this
is correct NL but the requests are made properly. It seams that Google translate for NL is not well trained,
so many of phrase return in source language.
I can’t find an issue inside the plugin.

Many tanks for the provided nl_NL translation file, if will as soon as possible update this at repository. (I
hope, it’s ok that i’ve removed your 2nd comment containing the download only.)

Please help urgently:

I Installed the codestyling localization plugin into my wordpress (2.8, german version) and everything worked
perfectly. I was able to edit po files and rescan plugin files without problems.

Then I started to recsan wordpress itself. After a few seconds the scan hung up while scanning
options.misc.php. Since that very moment I obtain an error message when trying to view my blog behe.net in
any browser:
“Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in
/var/www/vhosts/behe.net/httpdocs/wordpress/wp-includes/pomo/mo.php on line 81″

I am desperate, How can I repair this?

Hi Bernd, the plugin has currently not been updated to meet WP 2.8 in terms of re-scanning WordPress
itself!
It work as intended with Plugin and Themes but not with WordPress 2.8 core files!
I’m still on investigation and preparing a quick fix with 48 hour from now and will publish also new blog
entry while it is availbale at WordPress Plugin Repository.
Sorry for that, i had to do a lot of repair work across “WordPress Deutschland”, some of my friend and
emergency request because of lost data. That’s why this has been delayed currently.
Update: I have send you an additional e-mail regarding to your problem. If your mail address is invalid,
please let me know, you i can give you more instructions.

Hi there,

Using the updated plugin to translate the Twitter Widget Pro plugin. Doing so, I can generate two translation
files: twitter-widget-pro-nl_NL.mo and nl_NL.mo. Changes in the first show up, changes in the nl_NL.mo do
not show up. When I go back to re-edit, I get the following message:

“Your translation file doesn’t support the required textdomain extension.

Please re-scan the related source files to enable this feature.”

When I do a re-scan, the nl_NL.mo is swiped clean again and all translations are gone. This nl_NL.mo file
only contains plurals.

What am I doing wrong here?

First of all thanks for your reply. The Plugin uses the default textdomain accidentally an missed the ability
to provide the plugin based textdomain, here the definition of WP sources:

PHP
1 function _n($single, $plural, $number, $domain = 'default')
timing: 0.035s

The file contains all the plurals in wrong notation:

PHP
1 _n('about %s year ago', 'about %s years ago', $count)
timing: 0.035s

Normally all this occurances should be written as:

PHP
1 _n('about %s year ago', 'about %s years ago', $count, 'twitter-widget
timing: 0.035s

I don’t know, how you re-scanned the “nl_NL.mo”. The default textdomain should not be exported, it’s just
possible for splitting several textdomains contained.
What you need is:
1.) the correct usage of _n(…) inside the plugin, please inform the author about this mistake too.
2.) the plugin needed file is: ‘twitter-widget-pro-nl_NL.po’ and the resulting *.mo.

I will publish a new article about serveral mistakes plugin writers are currently doing inside their plugins.
What you have found would result in past that this parts of texts never gets translated during runtime
because they will be searched at the wrong textdomain.

This is normal on not re-scanned po files. If you re-scan your language you are about to translate, you
should be able to translate it.
The new separation feature of multiple contained textdomains extends the po file at each entry with the
mapped textdomain. As long as it is not scanned new by this plugin, you will get this message.
I will update my documentation next days, currently i run out of time for this.
I thought, it’s enough to direct with the text to re-scan but i’m afraid, this is not enough.

I put it on my long todo list for version 2.0 comming with a more intuitive UI than current.
Also planned comparison between more than one source language for those are able to understand
more than 1 foreign language and want to look at other translations at the same time.
In long terms also something like a translation dictionary is in my mind, local snapshots and also
server based huge database for lookups (on demand and user’s wish). But this will take more time as
currently available.

I contacted the author of the plugin and he released a new version. Now the translations show up
in the right file. I provided the plural translations, generated the .mo file and still the translations
do not show up.

And besides that, if I want to re-edit the translation files the now familiar message pops-up again:

Your translation file doesn’t support the required textdomain extension.

Please re-scan the related source files to enable this feature.

Sorry to bother you, but I am not knowledgable enough to be able to tell whether this is an issue
with the localization plugin or the other (twitter) plugin.

It’s no problem, just ask if questions remain.

I did download the latest version too and checked it. I did tests with the contained “es_ES” and
also created a “nl_NL version and re-scanned it multiple times.
I couldn’t find an error for now. Could you please send me by mail (see imprint for address)
your translations (*.po and also the first time generated *.mo) to validated it ?
Normally translation won’t be gone automatical, this behavoir is not known and need not to be
related to the plugin.
I will inform you after testing your file, what i found or what could be the reason therefor.

The issue seems to be related quite different. I’m currently at analysis. It seems to be related to an source file
(php) that is coded in Ansi (not us-ascii 7 and also not UTF-8). If i try shuch a file with german Ü inside not
coded UTF-8, the scanner produces a header less *.po file.
I will try to find out, what went wrong in such a case.

BTW: all my files at my hosters machine have [rw-|r--|r--] and i can modify them as i want by the plugin.
In most cases this is related to safemode or provider restrictions. The future version will try to use the FTP
access WP takes for updates, but this would also require something like a “temp” dir at wp-content then too.

Normally you should have a localized version of WordPress in your language. If so, the blog will run in
your choosen language and also the plugins/themes do that.

If you only run the original english version but want to have it in another lang, then 2 steps has to be done:
1.) download the required language files from wordpress.org and put them into /wp-content/languages.
2.) edit you wp-config.php and place the language const accordingly.
example for spain: define (’WPLANG’, ‘es_ES’);

If this answer doesn’t solve you question, please describe you issue more precisely.

want people to read the the blog to get the buttons in french. ur plugin recognize the language pack so i dont
see why wordpress is not showing in french.

what i do i just what u told me to do:

1) i got my fr_FR.mo and fr_FR.po under wp-content/languages
2) i edit the wp-config.php to: define (’WPLANG’, ‘fr_FR’);

and still nothing…

what am i doing wrong? i’ve been googling about this for the past 3 days…

You will get this message and the folder list, if the plugin isn’t able to detect the correct path, where the
language file has to be placed. Because this normally depends on what the author of plugin/theme prefers,
it can’t be detected successful in all cases. That’s why the plugin asks you to make the choice.
There is no standard for placing language files, so there can only be done a few tests to eval the path,
where it could be. The plugin tries to locate any existing *.mo, *.po or *.pot file inside the space of the
dedicated plugin/theme and if it at least found one, it assumes, that this is the correct path. If there is none
of them and it was also not able to detect the path at source level, this question will occur.
If you get this at WordPress itself, this mostly is driven by the fact, that the US version doesn’t contain the
 folder /wp-content/languages/ but for this case the plugin can create it if possible (sligthly different
warning).

Thanks for reporting. I will check this, but normally this should work. I would think about 2 reasons:
a) the provider is such restrictive not to allow such path adressing
b) the plugin doesn’t support gettext feature.
The analysis will start as soon as possible, but I can only use my WP 2.8 normal version for tests because i
have currently no mu installation for testing. This may lead to a potential new update at wordpress.org

I can create them in a normal WordPress 2.8.2 installation. I did also create an fresh (not yet existing
language Türkçe). I did run rescan and also launched the editor and could proceed with tranlation but
i’m unabled to translate into this language.
It seems to be a problem of the WMPU folder structure. Currently i have a short restricted amount of
time, i will check it as soon as possible. I f you would place it in the meentime into the ordinary
folder wp-content/plugins/gd-star-rating/ it would be detected, could be translated and afterwards
moved into your prefered location.
Today i also read an article of this plugin author, that this plugin (GDStarRating) is not 100%
WPMU / BuddyPress ready, please also read his page for any further problems too.

hmm, i only can think about user permissions at the install path. I have currently no
other idea, why this happens, because if other plugins work, this plugin may be
transfered to domain with possible wrong user right makes it impossible to scan.
But it’s shouldn’t hang, i have to investigate that.

got a little problem on a wpmu isntallation:

I have 3 language files, the .mo part. this plugin shows white .po and green .mo so I go scan and I am told:

1 You do not have the permission to read the file '/var/www/clients/client1/web16/web/wp-includes/

I went to the folder containing those files and set my permissions:

chown -R user:group web/

chmod -R 755 web/

these settigns allow me to automatically update wordpress and/or plugins install new themes etc. so I guess
the checks performed by your plugin are too strict. (running suPhp)

Normally a 666 in worst case rw-|rw-|rw- should be sufficient enough. Why the execute state should be set
? Furthermore, did the new po file get a red box after creation, if you would return from edit screen ?
If there is only a *.mo but no *.po and you launch edit, the *.po will be build out of the *.mo content and
launches editor. May be the rights are not set properly in this case. Could you test this with this steps:
1.) having *.mo only
2.) press edit
3.) return to overview
If it’s now a red *.po, try clicking the read *.po symbol, this will change the rights to be sufficient (666 in
worst case, normally 644). If this works, i have to change it during direct *.mo file convert.
BTW: the plugin gets as next the same filesystem based read/write access like the “WP Native Dashboard”
but it will take until mid of next week because i’m on a short trip next days.

ok, I went to the localization menu, having only a .mo file, green.

1. clicked edit, got this error: Your translation file doesn’t support the required textdomain extension.
Please re-scan the related source files to enable this feature. The textdomain drop down doesn’t list
anything in the dropdown.
2. went back to main page, .po still showing white, .mo green

I can wait till you incldue the settigns for the plugin to behave like the “WP Native Dashboard” …

This depends on the plugins lookup table. There are all supported languages defined and their “Google
Translate API support”. For sk_SK it’s currently off.
I have checked it and yes, it works. This will be updated soon. If you want to get it working now, following
change has to be performed:
1.) locate the file /codestyling-localization/includes/locale-definitions.php
2.) open this at an editor. Attention: The editor has to open it in UTF-8 and also to save as UTF-8 without
BOM marker !
3.) Search inside this:

I change plural definition for it in the file locale-definitions.php .
Like this:

When I want change plurals for term “Languages” there are your previous definition.
On page codestyling-localization.php are not correct terms after language summaries.

and added this slovak words for plurals:
0,5,6 … - jazykov (index 0)

It seems that your formula is good, please do not make changes. Sorry for my mistake. Than
where is problem? OK I describe it.
On main page codestyling-localization.php are on right side tables with available language files.
Each plugin or thema has got its own table.
At the top of each table on left side is link “Add new language” and on right side sum of
languages.
I have follow sum of languages:
WordPress - 1 (index 1), CodeStyling Localization - 16 (index 0), Arras Theme 3 (index 2)
Logically localized terms should be 1 jazyk, 16 jazykov and 3 jazyky
but I have got 1 jazykov, 16 jazyk and 3 jazyk. Why 16 and 3 are the same when index
for this numbers is different?

Second…it doesn´t work (for me)

I have tried to localize 3 plugins on two different installations of WP and I don´t get the plugins to translate.
Codestyling do create .po and .mo files and they show up green in the main page. I have set sv_SE in wp-
config but the plugins doesnt show up in swedish even though I translated them with your plugin.

Any suggestions?

I was trying to install your plugin, because some parts of my theme is not translated correctly. Your plugin
supposely would be able to help me fix this. I was very interested. Great work you did. Thanks in advance!
Then my problem. I uploaded the map into my contents/plugin dir. In my adminboard I tried to activate the

Hi, I am desperately trying to localize a buddypress theme. For some reason the plugin does not recognize the
gettext echoes. I tried the php scanner http://www.icanlocalize.com/tools/php_scanner and there gettext is
detected. I downloaded the po, even created a mo, but still the plugin does not find it. Any ideas? Would be
really happy to use the plugin!

The plugin doesn’t support load_muplugin_textdomain

So it doesn’t find mu-plugins that needs to be translated, unless the mu-plugin is a “normal” plugin placed in
the mu-directory.

Is there a chance this will be covered in future released?

I just installed the plugin. When I click on rescan as recommended by the plugin as it could not interpret the

Thank you for a very good plugin.

I have used it to translate the plugin “[GWA] Autoresponder” to swedish. But I tried to do a Rescan, it says
“Please standby…” and then nothing happens!
Deleting my old PO file and running the Rescan works but not when trying to update an existing PO file for a
new version of the autoresponder.

Hi,

This is very, very cool plugin! But unfortunately I have a problem with it that I don’t know how to debug:
I installed plugin normally (have done this before successfully for other sites), but I guess there’s something
wrong with installation, since for example in main Manage Language Files -page no .po and .mo -thumbnails
are visible. You can check with firebug that there are links with right styles, but for some reason absolute links
to images (such as images/po.gif) don’t work.

Furthermore, rescan hangs at 0 and I can’t open any language files for editing. It just shows progress bar but
doesn’t get anywhere.

1. is it possible to translate a Theme? (if not, it would be a great improvement). I do not even know if i can
create a .pot/mo for a theme and where should it be located)
2. btw about location of po and mo files - where do they have to be? Do they must be in defined plugin folder
- each plugin seem to have a different path, some want it to be under /plugins, some under plugin-
name/languages, some under plugin-name/some-other-folder - it would be great (e.g. for upgrading plugins),
if i could have all language files for plugins under wp-content/languages as i do for wp itselft, but i do not
know if this is problem of core/plugins or it could be somehow rewritten.
3. it does not work for very popular CForms II plugin (at least for me), it returns some stupid error during scan
(in czech it is something like “access error” with no description)
4. do you know where is the problem with Chrome? I can try to find a fix or report it as a bug to chromium
dev

I’ve successfully used your plugin version 1.80 on WP2.7. Now I moved to WP 2.8.5 and ungraded your
plugin to 1.93.

But now when I try to go into a po or mo file i get this messagge (the file is an example, the behaviour is the
same on different files or action I do:

You do not have the permission to write the file ‘/wp-content/plugins/add-to-any/languages/add-to-any-

it_IT.po’.

I checked the permission of this specific file and they are 755.

Any suggestion?

URGENT: Plugin completely broken with WordPress 2.9 (beta 2).

a) There are a lot of errors in the themes tab saying “No such file or directory”. This is clearly beacuse the
path is wrong, like this: (/home/myuserdir/public_html/wp-
content/home/myuserdir/public_html//themes/mytheme.php), where “myuserdir” may vary, but are repeated
in the path.

b) The created .mo files are not accepted by WordPress, bot earlier created ones and newly created ones, from
the WordPress tab or the Plugins tab (as the Themes tab is not usable).
I now have no working translations for any module that I previoulsy have translated using this plugin. And
that’s a lot.

The problem is observed on both Windows and Linux, using PHP 5.2.11. File permissions are checked, and
the generated .mo file is in fact updated, but for some reason seems it’s not able be parsed by WordPress
gettext.

I have a problem using the CodeStyling Localization plugin with WP 2.9.
WP 2.9 can not use language files created by CodeStyling Localization plugin. When I downgraded back to
WP 2.8.6, everything works OK again. Is it a bug or is it only my problem? I translated two plugins (wp-email
and simple:press forum) using CodeStyling Localization and there are problems with both of them – both
work in English only, not in transleted language (Czech).

Mo file generate by localisation plugin will not load in wp 2.9.

None of my plugins are loading their languages, however the main wordpress does load the default domain
mo file. Took me a LONG time to figure this out….eventually as a debug attempt, I copied the main wp mo
file and renamed it as the plugin file, and with some debug statements, saw that this file was imported while
the mo generated before would not load.

Does anyone know why this is happening? I like using this plugin and do not want to have to figure another
out!

I’m one of the administrators for the Finnish language Wordpress site (http:/fi.wordpress.org). At some point
we chose out locale to be just “fi”. This makes sense because there is really only one Finnish speaking locale.
However your plugin does not seem to recognize files of the form fi.po. Is it possible to change this? We are
not keen to change the format of all the files on fi.wordpress.org, which would break automatic upgrading for
all people using WP in Finnish.

It’s such a great plugin! But I have a big problem to use it. Could you help me out from this?
This is the problem:
I set a test site on my own PC (Win7,XAMPP) with WordPress. After installing your plugin, it seems right.
But when I finish editing a .po file, I can’t get the SAVE button at the bottom of the edit page as your picture

But under WP 2.9.1 a little Problem,

The mo Files have no Basicdir in, thus, the translation in your own Tool will not do.

Have the Basicdir manually edit, and the mo File recreated, now the translation go.

Not a real Bug ;-), but I thought I keep informed you and all users.

Hi Heiko,

Uptill recently your plugin showed my themes as well, specifically the theme Hybrid,
http://www.themehybrid.com. I contacted the theme author and according to him he is following the
Wordpress specifications for localization. Could you have a look into it? It might very well just be something
on my end but I loved being able editing/creating language files for themes.

Actually, come to think of it, none of the themes show up for localization, not even the default ones…

Wow, this is brilliant idea to localize internally, I can save lots of time. Thanks for this useful tools.
However, I have small problem, when I tried to translate, there is weird happening.
I change the “No Comments” to “No Feedback” and “Comments Off” to “Feecback Off”, for Testing.
I showed me the first translation is showing without translation, and second is displayed the translated word.

I’ve been spending to figure out this issue, however I decide to ask to expert.
If you can answer without spending too much time, Could you help me to solve this ?

Hi, there

I would like to thank the developer for a very nice plugin that saves me a lot of work and trouble. However, I
now do some localization work on WPMU 2.9.2 and it seems to have problems scanning wpmu specific files.
When I press rescan it starts doing it’s job, but when it reaches wp-admin/wpmu-sitewide-plugins.php it gets
stucked. When I manualy removed this file (just for the rescan) it again gets stucked on a file that follows: wp-
admin/wmpu-terms.php.

Some details, just for the record:

I have put a sk_SK.mo from regular WP version (from http://www.wp.sk) and needed a po file to be generated
via rescanning so the new catalog already includes the translation made by wp.sk guys, so I do not have to
redo the whole thing. The plugin says 282 files should be scanned, however the 160th gets stucked (as
mentioned above).
Any hints or suggestions are very much welcome :-).

Problem solved!
Memory limit was too low, so I changed it temporarily in wp-settings.php to 128M and it worked out like a
charm.
I would suggest to put a some kind of a setting in the plugin so it it can raise the limit while doing larger
rescans.

Hello,
I translated the picture perfect wordpress theme to get it localized with .po and .mo files. But Codestyling-
Localization does NOT see it in the list of themes that have localization. Is there something to add somewhere
to trigger codestyling to see it? I noticed that only 20% of themes roughly are seen and some themes which
have .po and .mo files (either in main theme dir or in “language” sub-dir) are not seen. Strange to me.

another wpmu related problem: your plugin wouldn’t pick up a subfolder (not sure if its supposed to right
now) and here is the other plugin author’s reply, maybe it helps:

The plugin is fully internationalized, your plugin probably doesn’t search for the
load_textdomain() function and is expecting load_plugin_textdomain() or
load_muplugin_textdomain() instead. It is also possible it is only scanning root files in mu-
plugins (this one has the load_textdomain() function in a subfolder).

You should take these up with that plugin author.

since 3.0 will merge wp+wpmu, maybe now is a good time to check your mu-plugins folder compatibility? I
hope you can give me some advice here…

This is still at investigation for language files.

But WordPress doesn’t allow the entired plugin to be inside a separate folder, at least the main file have to
be in main mu-plugins folder to be detected by WP 3.x!
So i don’t see any worth to have a subfolder other than collect each language file there. But also there is no
working autoupdate on horizon provided by Automattic for mu plugins, so folder creation during update is
not planned.

The plugin code styling localization does not work with Wordpress version 3.0.
You can then no longer at the site and not manage. You only see the menus for wordpress but nothing will
open anymore. After I ftp the code styling localization plugin was removed only after I could manage my site

Here you have version 1.95 of The plugin code styling localization are to download.
By bidding you have wordpress version to 1.96. This version does not work with Wordpress 3.0.

Google Chrome (javascript engine buggy)

Chrome recognises the keyword “native” you’re using in your javascript code (one of the JSON response
properties) as a reserved word in javascript, so in order to make your plugin work in Chrome you have to
replace the “native” keyword in jour javascript for something like “lang_native”.

I had to do this in just 2 lines in codestyling-localization.php file:

- line 1010 -> replace native: ‘< ?php echo $c... for lang_native: < ?php echo $c...
- line 1705 -> replace transport.responseJSON.native + for transport.responseJSON.lang_native +

And then it will work forever!!

AWESOME plugin you’ve developed, couldn’t live without it!!!

First off, thanks for a great plugin.

Here is a little suggestion for a feature. Could it be made so that you would have the possibility to
export/import/backup the PO/MO files for each language? I need this feature a lot as I use the pretty much the
same plugings on all my sites, and would like to use the different translations on the other sites. So instead of
having to go the FTP way and copy it out, you could just export the language files and then import them on
the new site. Also some plugin updates overwrite translated files and it would be great to have the possibility
of backing up your translated files before updating a plugin.

This is a known error caused by using a deprecated PHP version. It seems, that you are using PHP 4 at
your system. Running this version throws this error. If executed by PHP 5 this error doesn’t occur.
I will provide asap a new update as 1.97.1 repairing this fault. But on the other hand side using deprecated
PHP versions is not the safest way running a CMS stable and secure.

Hi, this plugin is really good, but I have a problem I can’t fix.
When I click “Rescan” function for my main “Wordpress” language (italian one) nothing happens. No
window opens for onclick function. While for all the other plugin I have no problem, this link doesn’t work. I
just noticed that when I changed the web page (leaving code-style localization administration page) and
previously I clicked “Rescan” function for Wordpress language, it appears just for a while, the window for the
rescanning, but only with header and the X for closing the window, but without anything in the body of the
window.. Sorry, I’m not a professional programmer and I can’t undestrand what to to. Can u help me?

I did not get such an error report until now and I’m unable to reproduce this behavoir. The problem is, that
I would need to inspect the bad behavoir at the system where it occurs. But this would require admin
loging access to your blog and I’m afraid, that this would not be suitable for you.

This is currently not supported by 1.x versions of my plugin. The ongoing private dev version and later
upcomming version 2.0 will support it. Currently the work arround could be to name the file ja_JP.mo and
ja_JP.po, translate or patch them as usual and rename it afterwards back to the supported version.

translating with the use of ” (double quotes) I get \\” in the file, which later also shows, I am using locale
he_IW for this

I didn’t get the kind of problem you may have. If it’s the place to find my plugins page, it’s under menu ->
tools -> localization.
If the problems is, that your theme won’t get listed at my plugins page, than the autors eigther didn’t
support translation or the theme is fully encrypted. But currently i don’t support full encryped themes.
Can you please give me more information about your issues ?

 There are potentially 2 reasons for:
1st - the PHP environment was compiled using - -disable-tokenizer option
2nd - your provider blocks per php.ini the utilization with: disable_functions=token_get_all
In both cases contact your provider or if you are able to figure it out, check the compilation and ini option
by yourself.

My Plugin is only for main text translations provide by WordPress itself, the theme and/or the plugins.
If you want something like translated posts/pages content, that you have 2 options to do so:
a) you install WordPress 3.0 as Multi Site Installation and use the subdomains/folders as different
language.
 b) you search your best fitting plugin assisting you like gengoo, qtranslate and other to run a normal WP
version.

It helps me a lot to translate the furnistore theme for my girlfriend shop !!

Maybe you can help me to fix few issues : Some of the words are not translated into french although I did it in
your plugin.
I.e : When my basket is empty : it’s written : 0 article (which is good in french)
When I have one aticle : it says : 1 item (and I triple checked there is the right translation in the .mo file

an other example is still when my basket is empty and you go on the basket page : http://www.littleatelier.fr/?
showCart=1 and it says “Your Mon panier is empty !” (mixing french and english)=> in the . mo file I’ve
translated : “Your %w is empty!” to “Votre %w est vide !” or even “Votre panier est vide !” but no changes …

Have you already heard about these kinds of bugs ?

In most cases this bugs appear at Themes or Plugins, if the author tried to combine sentences by himself
with only the english background in mind. The build in translation system of WordPress is not able to mix
a phrase half the one and half the other language.
So it seems to be located inside your plugins/themes code and should be repaired there. Unfortunately I
have no access to your theme/plugins code, so I can’t go in deep to analyse the bug and propose a solution.

The problem is, that your webspace doesn’t permit to write new files directly to disk by an PHP scripts and
also doesn’t allow to change the user rights. If you get the same message, if you click at the read po/mo
symbols to change the rights of existing files, you also run into this problem. The server is configure to
prevent this, so this message appears. Unfortunately this can’t be solved at my plugin at the moment, this is
part of the next major release still in progress.

The plug-in is fantastic and easy to use. I just have one very specific question:

What does the “read square” at the end of the phrases mean. I see that it appears only in some at the word or
phrase to be translated (i.e. the original script) and then only sometimes in the translation as well.

The red squares at the end of phrases are hints, that the original (translated) phrase ends with whitespace
char (mostly a space). This is intended in most cases by the Author but should be avoided. To be able to
see, that the original phrase ends with a space char (and your translation need to end this way too) I did
introduce this squares (can also be found at screenshots from wordpress plugin repository).

This plugin is realy valuable. But I have experianced a strange problem: When rescanning a theme, It found a
lot of Buddypress strings that did not belong to the theme. Budypress was not even installed on the site, but on
another site in a subdirectory.

Depends on Theme and the folder, where the theme has been installed.
Normally themes are installed at wp-content/themes so I assume you have it there.
If the theme is a global supporting theme (framework) also able to run with buddypress, the author may
have thought about separating 2 textdomains inside, normal one for normal WP and buddypress as requried
for special templates required at a BuddyPress environment.
Please let me know, which theme you are about to be scanning.

It depends on additional Plugins you may be using in parallel. If you are using something like WPML or
qTranslate to get a WordPress installation with multiple languagues, then this plugins require mostly a
short form of the *.mo file naming.
I know this from qTranslate, it needs theme files named “de.mo” instead of “de_DE.mo” to work properly.
My translation plugin only produces files correctly named with lang and country code eg. “de_DE.mo”. If I
want to get it running correctly with qTranslate, i have to rename it after generation at file system to
“de.mo”
May be that this is also your issue. If not please send me you generated mo-file by mail, because I have
made the download of you addressed theme and have successful tested the proper working of generated
translation files.

I only found this issue by corrupted *.mo files may be loaded by WordPress. Rescan doesn’t produce this
error, only generation of *.mo files may be able to produce it.
To solve this at your site, please delete by FTP the last generated *.mo file from webspace (where you did
the rescan and generation).

When I try to edit .po file trough this plugin it says “You are trying to open a translation catalog which
expands above your PHP Memory Limit at 0 MB during read. Please enable the low memory mode for
opening this components catalog.” So I did enabled low memory mode, and same, nothing changed. Then I
increased memory limit in php.ini to 512M, still nothing. Then I added this line:
define(’WP_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ‘512M’); to wp-settings.php and wp-config.php and still nothing.
It’s such a great plugin, but shame i can’t solve this one.
Any idea how to solve this? It’s urgent, please help.

It seems to be an other problem at your system. Do you have direct write access per PHP to your
WebSpace?
You can say yes, if automatic update works at your system without any problems. If you need FTP data to
perform any automatic update, than you don’t have direct access rights.
My plugin only works, if you have direct write access.
In any other case I would need a test account to check your system, because this is hard to figure out
without any access to the system affected.

rescans it started to show that message. I don’t know if it’s some bug, I can’t tell. My problem is not yet
solved, what should I do? If I disable and enable again the plugin, would it delete something or make it

Disable/Enable my plugin has no side effects, all will work as it did before.
The problem seems to be a different one i could only detect, if I would inspect the error monitored
by FireBug inside Firefox (especially the XHR call result).
Without that possibility, I can’t made any proper suggestion, because the error is unknown to me.

Just for the record. I also got this rescanefailure after upgrade to 1.99.10 (but also first time using
on 3.2 bleeding edge) on some scans with the at 0 M message.

An increased memory limit did the trick, maybe above person could try disabling all other plugins
(just in case they are somehow affecting the memory).

tried to translate .po for BuddyPress 1.2.6. In the end of second translation page decided to check it’s
functionality, generated .mo, but can not see any translation on the frontend.

- I have wp3.0.3 multisite, so I work with 50+ themes. Some themes are in DEACTIVATED status. Why? And
how can I change this?
- I use an e-commerce solution from eCommercePlex and they use framework+child theme structure. And I
see the framework in codestyling list but it is also deactivated…

- framework-child structure doesn’t work - because framework and child are in two subfolders under themes
folder, I don’t see the solution
- I don’t see Google Translate link and the generate .mo file button
- by me textdomain allways is only Default and I can’t change (except codestyling and twentyten)
- .mo file is white and after .po editing still white - hmmm, I’ve copied to my local drive, then Poedit it, Poedit
generated the .mo and I’ve copied back to the webserver, and voila .mo is green and it works

this is anoying…. it looks like localization plugin doesnt work with wordpress version 3.0.3 with multisite
enabled?
i did everything, rescan, translate, and generate a .mo file etc etc… bot no translations visible on any theme,
not even the default wordpress theme twenty ten. My root WP site doesnt translate, and non of my network
blogs/users are able to translate there themes.
I tried everything suggested in the above comments. Nothing helps. My blog network has write acces.

Is this plugin broken??

First, thank you very much for this plugin and Native Dashboard. Your hard work is much appreciated.

I’m facing a rather peculiar situation here where only a portion of the strings in the core WP po file is showing
up in the front-end site. All the translated strings in various plugins & themes are working fine. If they have
been translated, they all show up in Chinese.

I downloaded the core WP po file via the CodeStyling plugin. All of the strings appear to be translated
correctly. I changed the wp-config language setting to zh_TW. All strings show up correctly in Chinese in the
admin-backend. Some of the strings are showing up in Chinese on the front-end user site, other strings are not.
What is even more puzzling is that the same string shows up translated in Chinese on the home page, but
continues to be displayed in English on internal pages. (Ex. ***近期文章*** on the home page is the
translation for “Recent Posts”. If you click through to any post, you will notice that “Recent Posts” appears in
English in the right-hand column.)

Basically, I’m stumped. Any thoughts you (or anyone) may have as to how to debug this issue would be
greatly appreciated.

Heiko,

I’ve isolated a couple of issues that I thought may be interesting to you and/or other readers. They all relate to
my previous post regarding translated strings not displaying.

1. One rather simple reason that translated text wasn’t showing up was that it actually wasn’t translated. Some
of the text strings I thought were being grabbed from language files were in fact simply labels/titles that had to
be separately entered in the WP admin interface.

2. The theme that I was using was also causing an issue. I looked at the PO file and noticed that it was using 2
textdomains, one of which was named “default”. The CodeStyling plugin did not allow me to generate a MO
file for these translated strings. The fix I found was to edit the PO file, replacing #@ default with #@
[something_else]. After I did that I was able to generate the necessary MO file.

I’m still having difficulty getting the core WP translation strings to display on the front end. I’m thinking that
it may have something to do with a conflict between the core files and my theme (Elegance–StoreFront).

If you have any thoughts, please let me know. I’m going to keep at it and will post any new revelations on my
end.

The mystery continues…but things are getting clearer. The root issue is related to the interaction of different
themes.

I’m using the Elegance Storefront theme. As the name implies, it is meant to be a storefront and NOT include
blogging functionality. We did workarounds to get blog posts and comments. But, because the related strings
for blog posts, comments, etc do not reside in the Elegance theme, it appears to be looking to the TwentyTen
default theme.

But, for some reason…even after translating the Twentyten theme, the Chinese post/comment-related strings
will not display when the Elegance theme is activated. They show up just fine when only the Twentyten theme
is activated.

If you have any ideas as to what could be causing the crossed wires between the theme translations, please let
me know.

Just a heads up: the preg_match scans in your plugin will erroneously report that load_textdomain is used
instead of load_plugin_textdomain if the string load_textdomain exists in a php comment. Ok, not an obvious
situation (why would anyone have load_textdomain in a comment?) but there should be a better way to avoid
this kind of false negative. If I can think of something, I’ll let you know.

Thank you for this great plugin! I use it a lot for translations to norwegian. I have two comments:
1. The plugin has four codes for norwegian in your language menue. We have two languages (or dialects), and
the two codes used for WordPress is nb_NO (Norsk Bokmål) and nn_NO (Norsk Nynorsk). The other codes
can confuse translators.
2. The project information in PoEdit is missing. It would have been nice if the plugin was compatible with
PoEdit.

When I select a menu “Localization”, get all the information about available languages, but … I can not edit
them. When you click on the link “Edit” (as well as on Reskan, Delete, or Add new language) absolutely
nothing happens. No action, no change, no error messages, nothing.

I tried using this plugin on a remote server, on the local, with different browsers - no result. In what may be
the problem?

other links on the localization page are working. I have disabled all plug-ins except for qTranslate and
Resource Booking and Availability Calendar. I am using the deCasa theme from themeshift.com, however,
other users of deCasa have used your plug-in without problems.

I have the exact same problem! Nothing happens when I click edit, rescan or delete. The plugin worked
fine for a month or so and stopped working suddenly in april. Tried re-installing but that didn’t work. Tried
different browsers, no difference. Is it a problem related to BuddyPress? Works fine on another site of
mine.

The last article I wrote about the plugin “WP e-Commerce”, which suspends all my functionality at the
same way you described it. The lastest version of my plugin got’s a fix for this anyway (to ensure
proper working of my plugin as intended, please also read me article about).
May be, that you are using this plugin or any other plugin with the same bad behavoir. Without
knowning you list of active plugins and the used theme (all with free download links) I can’t investigate
the problem more specific.

Thanks for your quick reply! I think I just found the reason that it wasn’t working! I was using a
plugin called “Use Google Libraries” to load Javascript libraries from Google, and when I activated
it the links in your plugin started working again. Fantastic news! Check out the other plugin if you

Hi I am missing the “generate *.mo” file button at all.. (IE 7.0 or Opera Mobile 10.1) I have to choose also
only 10 - 75 items per page otherwise items does not show up. Not translated and Plural links does not work

First of all; great work with this plugin, one of the best and favorite wp plugins!
I have a feature request: if possible to have a switch to allow non admins to edit translations. At the moment,
only admins can edit translations, I think It s more logic to allow non admins, like editors to edit translations.

I made a quick-fix to source code

in codestyling-localization.php | line 1737 and line 297

changed manage_options to edit_private_pages, this allows ediors to edit translation which is more logical, I
think

but I hope this feature is included in the next release.

Dear Heiko,
Thank you for thisplugin. I am hoping that you can help with a problme I am having in that the plugin .mo
files will not load.
I have tried deleteing them and regenerating in code styling (this is in 3.1, but having similar problems on
remote server on 3.0)

I have added debug code galore (checking return status on load_plugin_text_domain as a peak at the wp code
shows that it returns false on various errors, but all comes back fine.
So the locale is there, wordpress says it is has loaded the domain (ie: $l10n[$domain] is set, however if one
dumps the global $l10n[$domain] , it exists, but the ‘entries’ subarray is empty.

The .po file definitely has translated text, the.mo file has a size of 5K (others are 1 K) so it has something in it.

As I said above, I have tried deleting and regenerating. I have tried saving via poedit and getting that to
regenerate a .mo, still comes up empty.

Do you have any ideas what might be happening and what else I could try to debug - this is driving me nuts!

The thing is it was all working before. Your plugin sees all the text fine.

Here is hoping that you or some others have seen something like this before and can advise.

Great plugin and I have been using it on several projects with great success.
Although this time I’m using thecartpress plugin to create a webstore and ave run into a problem.
Thecartpress plugin does not appear in the Localization -> Plugins list.

At the same time thecartpress developers are saying you can use any WP localization plugin to translate it.

Any advice?

Hi,
I’m trying to use your plugin (version 1.99.9) with Wordpress 3.1 multisite enabled and I’m experiencing
some problems. When I open “Localisation” under “Tools” I can see a list of themes, plugins, etc and their
languages but when I click on “Add new language”, “Edit”, “Rescan”, “Delete” nothing happens nor pop up
windows appear. I tested it in Firefox 3.6.16 and IE8, unblocking pop ups too but nothing changed.

Hi, Thank You once again for a useful plugin.

FYI

Problem when wp_content is relocated. I have several test wp installs that share a common wp-content - helps
me be sure that my plugins work across wp versions.

When trying to use localistaion plugin in any install that is not the one that is the main normal path for wp-
content, (which is a wp 3.2 bleeding edge versions - seems to work more or less okay there) then the
Localisation menu option just points to an active plugins url.

Other bits fyi:

In wp 3.2 version though, some plugins cannot be rescanned - hit memory limit with low memory enabled and
mem set to 128M.

Also had a lot of problems with permission messages which I somehow got around, not quite sure how .
Might have been a POedit clash - ie anyfiles thet poedit had been editing?

or might have been because I changed the language text domain and was hard to clean that up.

Hi,

I have problem activiating e codestyling localization plugin 1.99.10 to my wordpress 3.1.1 website.

I get the fatal error message: fatal error occurs at line 974 of source includes/idna_convert.class.php

Hi,

I’m using an translation Hebrew for the Arras template and I wanted to edit a one word in the translation, but I
can’t seem to do so.
When I try and edit the file I get a message saying I should re-scan it.
When I try to rescan it I fail because it’s missing a .po file.
In the Arras languages directory there are 2 .mo files, 1 .po file and a .pot file.

What am I doing wrong?

I have same issue that Panki. All working fine at the start but after a few rescans I get these warning if want
rescan or edit. Don’t have issues with permissions and have 64Mb limit memory.

Hi, I had the same problem, erro message:

“You are trying to rescan files which expands above your PHP Memory Limit at 0 MB during the analysis.
Please enable the low memory mode for scanning this component.”

Although memory limit is set to the default value (32MB). So I transalted all with good old Poedit and
uploaded…

Hard to answer because I have no access to your blog. This sounds like something interferes with my
plugin. If memory warning with 0 MB appears, this hints for some other issues at your blog, this is no
memory limit crash.
Sorry, I can’t guess what it could be without the info, how your install is stuctured and configured.

Do I copy the new .mo and/or .po files into my languages folder? I don’t want to overwrite anything I already
translated, do I only update the .mo files?

Can one somehow merge .po files? I mean maybe the official translating team translated more by now so

Hi! Thanks for a great plugin! I have installed it in are translating the plugin Wishlist. But for some reason the
“rescan” is overlined and I get this Security risk message: Full Encryped PHP Code: This plugin consists out
of encryped code will be eval’d at runtime! It can’t be checked against exploitable code pieces. That’s why it
will become potential target of hidden intrusion.

My problem is that it’s one word I can’t find when I press edit that I really want to translate. Could it have
something to do with the issues i’ve listed above?

Because it’s not possible to scan an encrypted plugin, the only way is to utilize the delivered wishlist-
member.pot file, the author provides at lang folder.
 You can try to add the msissing string into that *.pot file if you start the translation from scratch or append
it to your generated *.po file at disk.
The lines should look like:

2 msgstr ""

timing: 0.000s

where the text is what you are missing. Afterwards you should be able to translate it too, but there is no
warranty, that this works without having the original plugin code for comparison.

Your plugin is awesome, but somehow i don’t see any translations. What could go wrong?

I do translations and create the .mo and then “If you open an additional browser tab with your page subject of
your translation, you can check instantly if your changes looks as expected. This online control is useful
because sometimes the provided space for labels is not wide enough and you have to find an shorter
translation phrase.”

But everything is in English for me.

Should everything be translated first before you can see it? Or will it show the translated words and if there is
no translation the default language?

Normally after pressing “generate mo-file” the translation will be available immanently. So if you blog
runs correctly with the wp_lang set to the needed constant (or the blog in multisite is configured with the
appropriated lang) the is no reason to get english anyway except one thing:
The plugin and/or theme you are translating tries to load the lang file out of a quite different folder or
expects a none standard name. Because i don’t know, what you try to tranlate, i can’t help much further so
far.

Hi code,

I am trying to translate the Buddypress plugin.

The language (Dutch) was already there, i translated stuff and i pressed generate .mo.

The .po and .mo files are green in the overview so that should go alright.

Weird part is some parts are translated (originally) and some parts aren’t. The parts that aren’t have been
translated with your plugin.

The only weird i could find was the last written date/time of the .mo-file. 08/06/2011 19:38:39 Which is
2 hours in the past. But that shouldn’t matter i guess.

This depends on parts you are adressing. If the texts doesn’t belong the the textdomain of buddypress
but the global WP (standard) or any other textdomain (inside the textdomain switch box), than they
may not be visible at your installation.
Standard Textdomain comes from WordPress language file always and won’t be possible (re)defined
inside a plugin. Other textdomains wont be loaded if the plugin doesn’t load the additonal files (in
most cases not, because programmes make copy/paste mistakes with textdomains).
Please check, if the questionable tests belongs to buddypress testdomain or not.

I think there are some issues with the Buddypress plugin.

I translated stuff for the plugin but it still it will show English instead of Dutch. While other part
of the website aka other plugins are show in Dutch.

The BuddyPress Plugin consist out of a Plugin, which encapsulates a bbPress Forum (related
on a second WP Kernel). Thatswhy you will find 2 translation units inside “Codestyling
Localization”:

1. BuddyPress
2. bbPress

Inspecting you site, it seems that BuddyPress gets translated well while the bbPress Forum
part has not been translated yet. May be, that the bbPress contained is not longer compatible to
higher WP versions or you didn’t translate it (which cann be seen on your site).

I didn’t translate the bbPress just yet. But the words that show up in English still are the
ones from the Buddypress plugin and not from bbPress.

I did a quick find and i couldn’t find anything for the bbPress.

For example the English words on the register page (http://maatjesplaats.nl/register) come
from the Buddypress plugin.

I translated all the words but they just won’t show up I checked in bbPress as well and
these words don’t show up.

I made some screenshots from back-end and front-end:

I did search through BuddyPress and found, that BuddyPress tries loading with a 2 location
priorization:

First it looks at your wp-content/languages/ (or wp-include/languages/ folder for a BuddyPress

file. If it finds there one, it will be loaded regardless of what file resides inside the BuddyPress
directory itself.
So if you use my plugin, it will create the file inside BuddyPress own language folder always
but WP loads an old one, if you have one globally. This could cause your issues.
Could you please check it and (re)move the global one?

I’m a newbie and had the same issue just like u. This got it solve for me, I hope it will solve your problem too.

Just like Heiko aka codestyling said: Normally after pressing “generate mo-file” the translation will be
available immanently. -> this works for the lucky ones.

But it didn’t work for me. So here is what I did.

After the .mo file have been created. I edit my wp-config.php file and added the correct language + country
codes that I have translated.

For example, I have translated into Finnish. The Finnish language + contry codes is “fi_Fi”.

You can find your language + contry codes from here

The correct code line in wp-config.php should be like this:

Even if this would be possible, it only solves the texts from WordPress core and Plugin/Themes. But your
content is still at the language it has been written. For frontend switching there are many plugins existing
like Gengoo, qTranslate etc. doing already this job and also do the switching of langs by clickable links at
frontend.

Are you writing texts in more than one language at the same blog or do you using multisite installation
with each blog a different language? At multisite installs you can configure each blog with it’s own
language but you need also the WordPress core files to be present at the languages folder of workpress.
This also is necessary for the one blog solution if you want to switch between langs and also necessary for
your used theme as well.
My other plugin WP Native Dashboard is intended to do such switching for backend only but provides also
to download capability for WordPress core translation file downloads. May be helpful in you case too?

Ok, i’ve tried the Native Dashboard plugin, great plugin too.
I wonder it it download the languages only for backend (so only the files for /admin/ dir) or it
downloads the whole language stuff (also frontend). In this case will be super, because using in combo
with Codestyling Localization, will allow to be translated on frontend too, am i wrong? And a widget
with the language selector would be amazing

Language files of WordPress Core contains mostly the entired Backend and also some part of
frontend. But you would need the appropriated lang files for your theme and plugins too, to get it
somehow working.
The next big issue is, that the visitors must be logged in or you have to manage them using a cookie
storing the latest chosen language.
Currently it’s not planned to have such a widget or any frontend switch, because in most cases
people use multisite or plugins like qtranslate.
If I have more free time than current I will spend somte minutes to check, whether it is possible or
not.

i tried to translate http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/query-multiple-taxonomies/
but gives that error:
Your translation file doesn’t support the multiple textdomains in one translation file extension.
Please re-scan the related source files at the overview page to enable this feature.

Whatever i try, i just couldnt translate that plugin.. even tried poedit.. but there is a ro_RO translate..
Can you help me to find out whats problem?

Normally you should be able to create a new language for the plugin and it pops up at the languages table
of this plugin. Afterwards press rescan at the language to get a actual translation catalog (*.po). If this has
been done, the edit should work as expected. If you have existing files (*.po) please rescan prior to edit it.
In case this doesn’t work, may be some plugins or the theme interfering with my plugin. Some of them are
written poorly and place their javascript code also to any backend page even if this has nothing to do with
the other plugin or theme. You should check, if you gets scripts loaded to my backend page normally
belongs somewhere else (like facebook stuff ect.).

Please update first to 1.99.11 and edit aftewards you wp-config.php to get the entry qualified with your
blog lang to use:

If you are using a multisite installation, you can define the lang at each blog as superadmin as needed.

Hi,

I downloaded your plugin and translated some content on my website but I have on question and one problem.

1, The images for permissons “.po” and “.mo” are not showing up. Do you have any idea what might be the
problem?
2, When I run “ReScan” for the WordPress default files I get an error saying “CodeStyling Localization -
Access Error” the last place I can see that’s scanned is wp-admin/upgrade-functions.php. Do you have any
idea about that?

Assuming that the page affected is the same as the domain within your email address and also assuming,
that you are running my plugin there, you have a problem to access files inside the plugin directory.
Normally I should able to retrieve the readme.txt from my plugin but get an 500 internal error. Also the
images can’t be accessed, if there is no way getting them out of the plugins image folder.
Could you please check it why it isn’t accessible ?

Calling this URL should return the po image but returns a server error. There seems to be something
wrong at your server or your .htaccess file denies it somehow. Would be worth to ask your provider

Hello, I seem to have sorted my problem out. I am not too sure but I think it has something to do with the fact

Hi, everything works properly now.,

But previously I could click on add a language and nothing would happen.

It only started working when my wordpress site was in a “wordpress” subdirectory on my server. If I
iused another directory ie Site it did not work.

But do not worry, it works perfectly now.

I found the problem: it was a conflict with a jQuery plugin (Treeview) that was getting loaded on the
admin side by mistake.
 So if other people encounter the same problem, check if unnecessary scripts are getting loaded when
they shoudn’t!

I have found a reference to your wonderful plugin on the Wootheme’s website.

The problem that I find is that I usually use child themes and I cannot seem to get your plugin to reconize any
of them.

Hello, I’m trying to use the plugin, but whenever I run “rescan” or edit a file nothing happens,
Just a fade on the screen. Looking at the javascript console I get the following message “Uncaught Syntax
error,
Unrecognized expression: ‘], ” that occurred in chrome, firefox 5 and ie 7 .

I installed the plugin but it looks strange in wp-admin :

The line with LANGUAGE PERMISSIONS ACTIONS appears half cutted …
(I can send you a screen capture by email)

Also, I have PO an MO files (for French) in green.

But nothing is translated on Frontend.

Is this the right process ? :

I do a RESCAN, then EDIT (there I can see/edit the translation), then GENERATE MO FILE …
And it should translate ??

Also I noticed that the rescan is working for most plugins and theme, but for the main wordpress install, it
gives me an error after entry 200 : ACCESS ERROR

Thanks a lot for a great and useful plugin.

I’m having some trouble with creating a new language.

Once I have everything done (PO translated and uploaded to my server) when I click on the “Edit” button to
“generate de mo file” it gives me this message:

I have tried not changing the #@ default and it does show me both columns (original and translated), but it

I’m having a strange issue translating a specific plugin.

I use your plugin since … well, I don’t even remember when I’ve started using it
However, today I’ve installed the new plugin “Social Media Mashup”, but I can’t find it in the translatable
plugins.

I’ve checked the source code of this plugin and found out that it uses the constant BNM_LOCALE as
translation domain.
Then I’ve found that this constant is initialized in such way:
if ( ! defined( 'BNM_LOCALE' ) )
define( 'BNM_LOCALE', 'BNM_LOCALE' );

This is not good, I suppose, so I’ve changed it with a dummy value, but the plugin still doesn’t appear in the
list of translatable plugins.

Any advice?

I can’t select the translated language. I can click on edit and delete, but I can’t find a way to select the
translation as the default language. I even deleted all the other languages, but nothing happens. My theme is
still in English. I used Codestyling in other sites and it worked flawlessly. Any ideas?

I’ve been using your fantastic plugin for a while now. I now have a problem though. I can create a new
language. However, I cannot use RESCAN: when I click SCAN NOW I get the following message:

CodeStyling Localization - Access Error

No further explanation. All CHMOD settings for the /lang/ directory of my theme are set ok. I’ve even
checked it with 777…

Thanks for the plugin, but it seems to have a bug: it recognizes three textdomains (source, default, and
advanced). I created .po file for them all, no problem. But after I hit ‘Generate .mo’ file button, it only
generates .mo for th current textdomain. So, .mo is either for ’source’ or for ‘advanced’ - can’t get it for both.

Havn’t got a clue what im doing wrong. When I installed the plugin it worked fine but today when I wanted to

I am using a theme frpm DevPress called ‘Visual’.
Today i started check out the translation possibilities because i want to do a future translation to Swedish.
Normaly i use ‘po edit’ for Mac but i´m shifting towards your plugin because its great. Thank you for creating
this plugin.

One problem…
I get a compatibility issue because of the way the translation files is named. See screenshot.

If i rename the files from ‘visual-en_EN.po’ and ‘visual-en_EN.mo’ to ‘en_EN.po’ and ‘en_EN.mo’ the
plugin can handle the files and i can create my ‘sv_SE.po’ and ‘sv_SE.mo’ files.
But.. to make visual use my translation files i have to add the ‘visual-’ prefix again.

I have been in contact with the theme author and there seems to be a issue with the way that ‘codestyling
localization’ handles hooks.

What can i do about this? Workaround? Plugin update?

root.
When trying to add a new language the AJAX popup doesn’t show up and I can’t translate.

Is there a way of setting the plugin to the correct path?

works.. but i cant edit them from codestyle plugin :S

can i add a hook or something for it? i love your plugin and wanna use /wp-content/languages/ folder for

Hello guys, thanks for an excellent plugin.

I’ve found a bug, though. Tested it only for Polish language, but it may happen in another languages too. So,
when creating a .po/.mo files, the plugin doesn’t really set the plurals expression properly. The expression is
properly defined in $csp_l10n_plurals in locale.definitions.php, but somehow it is set to default expression
during export. I didn’t dig into the code to see where the things go wrong or how to fix it, but just wanted to
let you know.

I spent around three hours trying to see what’s wrong because until I opened the exported .po file with textedit
and saw the wrong plurals expression.

Hi; I downloaded your plugin and created spanish language files for my theme (custom community) without
any problem. But they don´t seem to translate my page. I can see the .po and .mo files in my folder, and in the
overview page I can see the language files are there, but they are not SELECTED (bold), like they appear in
other plugins and themes…
Am I missing a step?

I would like to enlarge the google code system by adding editors. I
would appreciate it if you would send a message to the language
support people, to apply for the editing and uploading access at my
e-mail adress. Also, with a given e-mail adress, I would assure for

Would be nice if every available language would have a separate
editor. As an example, the Nextgen-Gallery, it works quite
professionally.
On the other hand, it would be nice to built in into the plugin a
similar language file updater system as it can be find in the
Nextgen-gallery, if it is possible. As well as, automate the
downloading from the google-code web page via a web interface, just as
in the Nextgen-gallery solved very well. Perhaps the idea it seems to
be wild at first sight, but the Nextgen-gallery it is a real example

I’ve just installed this and found a small bug. When CSL scans folders and such, if a folder is unreadable for
some reason, the following four warnings are presented for it at the top of …/wordpress/wp-admin/tools.php?

What becomes quite a huge wall of text when one has many such folders (25 in my case, hence 100 warning
lines each time I open the page).

So, can you please add a check to the code so that it identifies and bypasses those unreadable folders? It’d
help wonders when using CSL!

PS.: I make those folders unreadable to the web server (and hence to WordPress) by chmod’ing 700 them.
They’re usually relevant only to shell usage, things like .svn folders and such, which is why I prefer not
having them externally reachable.

I’m trying to read the article, but the particular font/color text on the particular background makes it very
difficult. The text “vibrates” if you know what I mean. It’s usually a Windows font render issue or a firefox
color render issue (certain color combos reek havok on aliasing), but generally, larger fonts equals better-er.

(I’ve checked on Mac and non-Firefox PC browsers, it’s not so bad.)

I just downloaded your plugin and tried FR-CA and FR-FR. Both don’t work. I have a problem when generate
the .mo file, it goes right away in the wrong file. I use Classipress and in the new version I have to create a file
called Themes in the Languages directory. Then the translated file should read classipress-fr_FR.po and same

I have lot of custom queries built into a custom theme. For example sticky posts, latest posts,… I am missing
some guidance how to include specific language into the querries.

The current version doesn’t seem to fit well to WP 3.3.1 (and the recent jQuery).
When I click on the links to add a new language or any other, nothing happens.
I tried to play with the code. And recognized that $(…) is in fact the jQuery-$ and not the prototype-$ as it
should be.
Tried to use “jQuery.noConflict” but to no avail.

I would really like to have this plugin working again, it’s so damn useful. If I could help in anyway, just say a
word.

Thank you for you good plugin!But the problem is its don’t work for me..I have purchased a Big Feature
theme for my Wordpress page, and I did exactly as in instructions…but when I translate some stuff like “post
comment” or “404.there is no such page” to my russian language - when I click “save” and “generate file” -
the theme is still not translated.

I recommend this module to make it possible to backup. po and. mo files.

Because when a other plugin is updated, it deletes all the files in pluwing lanaguage folder. I lost my own
translation so as upgraded woocomerce and translation that I was doing, has been deleted …

This may not the best place to report a bug, but there doesn’t seem to be another option.

Codestyling localization is replacing original plural forms header in PO files with some kind of default string.
I looked over the code in locale-definitions.php and it seems there are correct strings for that, but when
generating PO they are not used. No for Latvian, at least.

Your domain name contains uppercase chars or you a using a subfolder installation of WordPress, where
the subfolder contains uppercase chars. Unix systems handle this different and my plugins doesn’t expect
uppercase letters inside an url.

Hello I have finished translating my file but have several questions. Hopefully you could help.
1.- i translated to spanish and we use accentuated letters in several words, i placed the accentuated letters as
they are not as code, will this be an issue? example canción instead of canciôn
2.- now that i have the translation how do i upload the new file for the language localization to take efect?
3.- Is there a way to protect my page of potential crashes due to a bad translation, would this be a potential

permission to change the files. I have set the codestyling-localization-es_ES.mo and codestyling-localization-

This is a warning, because the author of this plugin doesn’t code the way it’s intended to be. This doesn’t
meen, that the translation isn’t working. But other plugins doing filter actions with translations may not
behave as expected in those cases.

First of all, thanks for a great plugin. This has really helped me. It is so much easier than using poedit.
I have done the translation, but have noticed that some of the translations are not used. So they are still in
English. I do not know if this is because of this plugin or because of the other plugin that I have translated.
Cant really report much more of the problem, I am not a programmer, so I cannot look at the code and see
what happens.
I have seen it one place for now, but will report it if I see it in more places.

For those asking if it works with 3.3.1+ I used it with 3.3.2 and it worked fine.

textdomains definitions or you using plugins like qTranslate that only works with 2 digit locals in opposite
to the standard with 4 digit locals with separator for country and lang.

A simple brilliant plugin!

I had just spent 3 days trying to the uncover a problem with custom post types in my child theme not using the
language files. Then by a process of elimination I worked out that the problem was the strangely sparsely
undocumented (but year old) ‘feature’ of the lack of support for msgctxt for ‘_x’ by POedit…
Then I stumbled on the last comment in this Wordpress support post which re-described the problem and
mentioned your plugin (but, unfortunately for your Google ranking, didn’t link to it).
I was overwhelmed with delight and in minutes had my theme translated.
Many thanks (and I will try and scrape together some pennies as meagre recompense

Notes to help others

I added this to activate the translation by loading the text domain in the functions.php of my child theme:

 Depends why you don’t want to change it. If the problem is, that you need only a readable backend, try my
other plugin WP Native Dashboard. You can define the lang as greek inside your wp-config.php and it will
be used to show the blog in this language (including all plugin outputs) but my plugin allows override the
backend with a user dependend choise of backend language.

I have tested jiogoshop and this is not the problem. I don’t have WPML nor it’s free for download, so I
assume, it may be the root of the issue but I can’t test it. Try to deactivate WPML and check, if my plugin
works. If so, than WPML injects some code into my pages and deactivates my plugin.

Thanks for responding. I am using the Agency Theme on the Genesis Framework and wasn’t aware that
I had to edit any code. Is that file specific to the plug-in or is it a sitewide one? The only terms I have to
change are in the Ajax Events Calendar. I am not overly familiar with the setup but need a solution fast!

There is something wrong inside your wp-config.php file at least, because the warning output started
at / htdocs / public / www / wp-config.php: 2 said, your code puts out already content at the
beginning of your config file processing.
Even more, if this is not repaired or other plugins issues warnings too, the scan process won’t work
and states something about memory caused by the warning also put into the ajax call results.

What did you change at your config and how did you save it? Could be, that your editor added a
BOM Marker in front of the config file, please save the file without BOM at a appropriated editor.
In other cases something else went wrong at your file.

Just do it, get a *.mo *. po that I have in wordpress locally and copy to folder “languages” where
I have my site hosted. After the publisher through pt_PT.mo saved the file. Change the wp-
config.php to my language (pt_PT), nothing more.

Sorry, I’ve found the bug: it was the WP 3.3.1 it_IT translation file. I’ve updated it with the WP 3.3.2 version
and now I can load the translation as always.

Unfortunately there are still problems:

I’m using codestyling localization to translate WooCommerce in italian (as recommended here).
I’ve run a “rescan” (188 files!) and started translating. All ok, as always, I’ve translated, generated the .mo
files, checked both on frontend, backend, e-mails. I’ve come back after a while, trying to add some missing
translations and now I always get this message:
“You are trying to open a translation catalog which expands above your PHP Memory Limit at 0 MB
during read.
Please enable the low memory mode for opening this components catalog.”
Well, first of all I’ve already enabled the “low memory mode” and already added these string to wp-config
file:

I’ve asked WooCommerce support and they answered me:
“Have been checking your install and all seems to work fine except for the issue itself. I can’t pinpoint the
exact reason why this is causing a problem.

support on external plugins, since we don’t know all ins and outs. You clearly have an edge case here that I
can’t really cover…”

FYI I’m running the latest version of WP, WC and codestyling plugin.
What should I do?

Thanks for the quick reply! I am using WP Forum Server 1.7.4. I added my language (Hungarian) translated
the expressions, clicked on generate .mo file and then went to check if the Hungarian texts appear - but they
do not. Then did some backcheck, translated some other plugin - WP Favicon - to see it that is working and
there are no problems there.
I get this warning with WP Forum Server:

Checked the /web/wp-content/plugins/forum-server/languages folder and there are no Hungarian files there.

Do you have any lines where this happens because I did a research of the actual version 1.99.18 and can’t
find such a problem. I’m using PHP 5.3.1 at my local system all the time and all is fine.
I did not use at my code this type of assignment. Could be, that reading data wit WordPress function my be
related to SimplePie and this indeed uses this.

But this should also happen than at your Dashboard without my plugin installed while the feeds will be
read to fill up the boxes at the WordPress Dashboard.

ALL my WP with your plugin, now don´t let me continue working -translating- because each time I try I get
this error:

or:

You are trying to open a translation catalog which expands above your PHP Memory Limit at NaN MB during
read.
Please enable the low memory mode for opening this components catalog.

So now, what Can I do ?

I talked with Rackspace team, but no solution actually on their side.

The problem may be an outdated plugin or theme, that issues warnings while my plugins performs ajax
calls even if it should not. I can only investigate such issues with the affected system. I can’t reproduce it
locally.
If it’s an option to permit the ability to check your backend behavoir, I could analyse the issue and repair it.

I just tried some localization which didn’t work. Your plugin identified an error :
There are problems to find the used textdomain. It has been taken from existing translation files

This is great, so now I have a clear sign I have not set localization properly. However, I am not completely
sure what that message means. Could you help explain it?

The plugin only detects Textdomains correctly, if they have been used within the plugin as:

at the plugins header section with the Text Domain: entry

if it’s defined as pure text at the load function, eg.: “my-textdomain”
if it’s defined as constant and used within the load function, e.g: MY_TEXTDOMAIN

If the textdomain will be created by concatination or variables, the scanner can’t analyse it and assumes,
that the textdomain is equal the the plugin folder name.

“WooThemes Issue: The Author is known for not supporting a translatable backend. Please expect only
translations for frontend or contact the Author for support!”

This warning has been issued because I run into several requests, why the backend remains untranslated.
This has been introduced month ago, I have not checked it in between. If the situation has been changed,
then this may be not longer required, you should test it with your theme anyway.
It’s not an error, it’s just and warning, that some translations at the backend won’t show up with correct
language. It’s up to WooThemes to solve that cases.

I think, it’s not the best place asking those questions, because they are not related to this plugin.
But nevertheless I try to answer them.

You can execute different code at templates, if you test the result of the function call get_locale(). It return
the current used language, en_US for standard WordPress install and any other possible if you have a
language depended frontend.

Widget Titles should be translatable with multi language plugins like qtranslate, please read the
descriptions from this author, you to use and utilize it. There is no other way to translate widget titels
qualified.

Is there nay way to offer viewers a way to translate the page based on this plugin? For example, that they may
have the ability to select their language from a drop down and the site will be translated based on the language
files in the localization plugin. Thanks.

This is not the intention of this plugin. It only assist you tranlating the plugins/themes text to your
language. For frontpage multi language handling there are a lot plugins out there like gengoo, qtranslate
and others.

Maybe I’ve misunderstood this plugin, but I’m trying to use it as a “translator”.
I want my website to be available in french and in english. By clicking one of this two flags you can switch
the language versions.
Is it something I can do with this plugin ? What would the link be ?

This is not a translator for frontpages and multi language apperances of blog. It only assist for tranlations
of plugin/theme texts comming within the pugins/themes. You are searching somthing link qTranslate or
Gengoo plugin to get multi lingual front pages and content.

There ist no need to change file permission for read purpose. Normally each file at your host should be
readable by PHP as long as it has at least read permission. Does the theme file have any other permission ?

The plugin is not intended to be used with automatic translation of Blog Content and also doesn’t work as
language switcher. There are some other plugins doing this job for blog content, this plugin is only
intended to translate the codes text phrases releated to the gettext functionality.

Thanks for great plugin! Works marvelous

I have just one, “small” feature request. Is it possible to add dictionary to create automatic or semi-automatic
tool to translate different WordPress themes? I know about Google translate option and about Microsoft
solution but I don’t want anything that big (and not free :))

What I want is just simple (?) common string database with corresponding translation to my native language. I
could limit at least recurring translation most used words and strings in different themes. This could be used in
editor as default translation to strings found in database. There should be an option to change default
translation and adding new string to database if user needs to.

I hope that I described it clear

It’s planned to have a dictionary in future, hosted as service at my domain. This will than also give the
ability to pre-translate known phrases at once as special request.
Because my spare time is very limited I haven’t yet a solution but be sure, it will come.
