353 Holy Hours were kept before the Blessed Sacrament this past week. “The
word adoration means, to pay honor or homage to someone or something.”
As Catholics we have the opportunity to pay honor to the One who deserves
all our praise. The same Eucharist we receive at Mass, is what (or more
accurately Who) we worship in Adoration. “During Adoration, we have the
opportunity to come face to face with the loving God to deepen and strengthen our
personal relationship with God.” (Kat Martinez, Life Teen) Call Joie 330-745-6852
today for your hour of Adoration.
We are still looking for adorers to cover the following vacant hours, please
consider filling a spot and spend time with our Lord. Wednesday 2-3am, Friday
midnight -1am and 2-3am.

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Even though they were cousins and grew up together, in today’s Gospel, John the
Baptist admits, “I don’t know him” until the Spirit opened his eyes. Pray that the Spirit
will open your eyes so that you can see and appreciate each other beyond the surface
of daily routines.

Pastor’s Pick of the Week: “The Road to Knock”

When a near death experience after a fall from a 70 foot waterfall in Thailand transformed his life, Alan
Field gave up a life of crime to become a filmmaker, going on to win a Bafta and International Emmy
award (for BCC1’s The Street).

After his first documentary, The Road to Santiago, walking along the ancient Camino de
Santiago, Alan now finds himself walking a more recent pilgrimage to Knock in County Mayo, Ireland.
A walk which began over thirty years ago as a peace pilgrimage from Derry in Northern Ireland during
the troubles, this pilgrimage now has four routes with hundreds of pilgrims walking the Holy Shrine of
Knock.
The film follows Alan as he attempts to accept his newly found faith and understand more about
holy Mother Mary with each step taken along the powerful Road to Knock.

Christ’s Peace!

Fr. David Majikas

Next week, we will take up the Collection for the Church in Latin America. For many
in Latin America and the Caribbean, a rising secular culture, difficult rural terrain,
and a shortage of ministers all present obstacles to practicing the faith. Your support
for the collection provides lay leadership training, catechesis, priestly and religious
formation, and other programs to share our Catholic faith with those who long to hear
the Good News of Christ. To learn more about how your gifts make a difference, visit
www.usccb.org/latin-america.

Food, Fellowship and Faith for Adults -Join us on Monday, January 20 at 7:30 pm, as we
welcome our Guest speaker Dr. Joel Johnson, Visiting Assistant Professor, Borromeo
Seminary who will present a talk entitled “The Civil Catholic: How Aquinas Can Help Us
Navigate Deep Political Disagreements” at The Tangier Bistro Bar, located at 532 West
Market Street, Akron. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. $10 admission fee includes appetizers – cash bar available.
This event is sponsored by St. Sebastian Parish, Akron.

Men’s Fellowship will meet next Saturday, January 25 from 7-8:25am in the school cafeteria. We will
continue our study of Mark’s Gospel, and we will pray a rosary for Marriage, Family, and Respect for
Life, and world peace. Should you have any questions, contact Gib Adolph at 330-634-3738 or email
adolphbiz@email.com.

A "Caring and Sharing" session for those struggling with divorce, separation or widowhood will
be held on Monday, January 27th from 7:30-9:00 pm at Immaculate Heart of Mary's Convent
Building, 1945 Portage Trail in Cuyahoga Falls. Marlene Maruna, a retired Social Worker, will
facilitate this session. This event is open at no charge to people of all faiths. For information call
Marlene 330-607-6284.

Please note date change: For those preparing to have a child baptized in the near future, one
requirement is that the parents attend a Pre-Baptism Class. The next class will be held on
Wednesday, January 29, 7:00pm at St. Augustine. Registration is not necessary; classes are
held in the Rectory Meeting Room.

A Retreat for Young Adult Professionals: Join other young adults for the Seekers’ Retreat: “Why not
have a life?” We’ll explore the challenge of living fully in the present while anticipating the future. The
retreat runs January 31-February 2, 2020 at Bethany Retreat Center in Chardon. For more information or
to register, visit www.charis.org or contact Sr. Kate Hine, SND, khine@ndec.org.

Candlemas Day, February 2 – represents the entry of Christ, the light of the
world, into the temple of Jerusalem. Bringing the candle into the home is a
sign that Christ is with you in your everyday life. Candles will be blessed
and you are welcome to take one home.

February 3, Feast of St. Blaise –On the Feast of St. Blaise, it is customary to bless the
throats of the faithful with candles to preserve them from illnesses of the throat.
Throats will be blessed at Masses on the weekend of February 1 & 2 as well as
February 3.

Join fellow parishioners for a few hands of Euchre on Friday, February 7 beginning
at 6:30 with dinner. Cards will be held in the school cafeteria. Please bring a
covered dish to share…..the more the merrier!

Please pray for our young people attending the March for Life this week, as they march
for the babies who are not able to speak up for themselves and are in danger of being
aborted.
St. Augustine Soup Kitchen Crew ~ Sending out a great big THANK YOU for
the incredible service you perform every-single-time. You are truly the
hands, feet and heart of Jesus. Mark your calendars now for our next Soup
Kitchen on Tuesday, February 18 at the First Presbyterian Church, across
from the Barberton library, when we are going to celebrate Mardi Gras ~ St. Augustine
style, with a delightful ham dinner and fresh fruit salad. Beginning at 2:00, there will
be tables to dress, fruit to cut and homemade bread to slice. So, wear your
party beads and get ready to have a little fun! Never been to a Soup Kitchen? Join us.
We always appreciate another smiling face 😊. For questions call or text Carolyn at

In order to aid our parishioners with year-end tax planning, we will be mailing an
annual summary to those who contributed $250.00 or more. A donation will count
for 2019 if it is postmarked by December 31, 2019. If you have not received a
summary by the end of January, please contact the rectory at 330-745-0011.

The next Cleveland Retrouvaille Weekend is scheduled for January 24 – 26, 2020. This
is a Lifeline for Troubled Marriages. Has your marriage become unloving or uncaring –
your relationship cold, distant – thinking about a separation or divorce? Are you
already separated/divorced but both of you want to try again? Then the Retrouvaille
program may help. Retrouvaille, which means rediscovery, is supported by the
Catholic Diocese of Cleveland, but it is open to couples of all faiths. This program
consists of a weekend experience for couples and six follow up sessions. A
registration fee of $150 is required to confirm your reservation. For more information
concerning the program or to register, please call Marce or Liz at 440-357-6580 or
1-800-470-2230. You can also go online to www.helpourmarriage.org.

Save the date for the Shrove Tuesday Queen of Hearts Card Party February 25 at
St. Augustine School from 5:00pm to 8:30pm, presented by the Women of Faith. Keep
an eye on the bulletin for further details.

Vocation Cross Program – St. Augustine has begun the Vocation Cross
Program, sponsored by Women of Faith. Persons/Families will sign up to
take the cross home for a week. During the week they will pray suggested
intentions listed in the box or you can use your own personal intentions.
The cross will be kept in the church on the table under St. Cyril. The box
will contain the Cross, prayers, a video on history of the Rosary, prayer
cards/booklets, rosaries and holy water. Scheduled pick up will be from
Friday/Saturday to the following Friday/Saturday before the 4:00 Mass, so it is
available for the next week. Shut-ins that are unable to attend Mass can also sign up to
take the cross. WOF Core members will deliver/pick up the cross if needed. For more
information, please contact Therese Harper 330-760-5780, Mary Smith 330-882-9417
or Linda Simko 330-814-3898.

Please pray for all who will be attending this year’s March for Life this Friday. Pray that true compassion
and love will be reawakened in the heart and soul of our nation, and that those who have been deceived
by the notion that the intentional killing of the unborn in the womb is somehow an act of "kindness" will
come to the understanding that the baby in the womb is NOT the enemy. Rather, the enemies are our
own unbridled passions and lack of self-control. Disposing of the consequences through abortion
complicates the problem rather than solving them! TWO WRONGS HAVE NEVER MADE A RIGHT. Let us
build a Culture of Life, where every human life is sacred because it is from God.

St. Augustine Church is looking for someone to lead the rosary with the
residents every Wednesday beginning at 11:00am at Pleasant Pointe Assisted
Living in Barberton. If you are interested, please contact the rectory 330-745-
0011.

Month Seven – Developing Baby - You are in the home stretch with your
spiritually adopted baby. Beginning this month the baby uses all four
senses. He can see, hear, taste, touch, cough, yawn and hiccup. He now
recognizes his mother’s voice. During this time he will also receive antibodies from his
mother protecting him from a wide variety of diseases.

Are you an Active Parishioner?

We receive many requests for parishioners to be godparents or sponsors for the
Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation. Part of that request is to be able to verify
that you are an “active member” of our parish. It is difficult to know everyone in a
parish. Therefore, to be considered active, you must:
o Be properly registered & support St. Augustine (call the rectory if you feel
you are not properly registered)
o Have received the three Sacraments of Initiation; Baptism, Eucharist and
Confirmation
o Faithfully attend Mass on Sunday and Holy Days
o (If married) In a marriage relationship recognized by the Church as valid
according to Church Law
o And, use your parish envelopes for donations, even if you are not able to
contribute that week. By placing an envelope in the collection each time
you attend Mass, you are able to show participation.
Each person is assessed individually; the above are the main factors that will be
considered when making a determination. There are many activities around the
church campus, if you wish to participate, keep an eye on the bulletin. If you are
unsure about any of the above, please feel free to contact the rectory during regular
business hours. 330-745-0011
