Mass Transfer - I

Time: 3 Hours Max. Marks: 70

Max Marks: 75
Note: Attempt six questions in all. Q. No. 1 is compulsory.
1. Answer any five of the following (limit your answer to 50
words). (4x5=20)
a) Discuss in detail about Film theory of mass transfer
coefficient.
b) Explain selection criteria for choice of solvent for absorption.
c) What is the Knudsen Diffusion Coefficient? How does it vary
with Temperature & Pressure?
d) Differentiate between packed column and tray column.
e) Explain the terms- (i) Break through curve (ii) BET isotherm.
f) Explain the following terms with respect to tray towers: (i)
Flooding (ii) Coning (iii) Weeping (iv) Dumping (v)
Theoretical Tray.
g) Discuss types of adsorption and nature of adsorbent.
h) Describe rate of drying curve in detail.

2. Prove that the NTU for unimolal unidirection diffusion I

given by the following approximate expression. The
approximation can be obtained by using arithmetic mean in
place of logarithmic mean. (10)
yA2 dy A 1 1 - y A1
( NTU )G = + ln
y A1 ( y - y * ) 2 1 - yA2

3. A solute gas is to be absorbed in a counter-current packed

tower using a solute free liquid. The equilibrium relationship
is given by Ye = mX. Obtain an expression for the number of
units if the inlet and exit gas composition are Y1 & Y2
respectively. If a recovery of 90% of the solute is required
and the liquid is 1.5 times the minimum. Calculate the
number of transfer units. (10)
4. 1400 Kg (bone dry) of granular solid is to be dried under
constant drying condition from a moisture content of 0.2
Kg/Kg dry solid to a final moisture content of 0.02 Kg/Kg
dry solid. The drying surface is given as 0.0615 m 2/Kg.
Under the same conditions, the following rates
where previously known. Calculate the time required for
drying. (10)

5. How the drying equipments are classified & explain any one
with neat sketch. (10)

6. Derive equations to calculate rate of steady state diffusion of

‘A’ through non-diffusing ‘B’ and also for steady state
euimolal counter diffusion in case of gases. (10)

7. Discuss about principles, techniques, and applications of ion-

exchange in detail. (10)

8. Calculate the rate of diffusion of methanol at 20 0C under

unidirectional steady state condition through a 20 mm thick
film of water when the concentrations of methanol at the
opposite sides of the film are respectively 10% to 4 %
methanol by weight. The diffusivity of methanol in water
solution is 5.9*10-6 cm2/s. The density of 10% & 4%
methanol solution at 20 0C may be taken as 0.951 and 0.986
g/cc respectively. (10)
