he Indian High Commission
celebrated World Hindi Day
(Vishva Hindi Diwas) and
Pravasi Bharti Divas together with
several prominent Hindi educators
and members of the community, in
Wellington on Thursday, January 9.
World Hindi Day is celebrated
every year on January 10 to
commemorate the occasion of the
first World Hindi Conference held
in Nagpur India in 1975. Pravasi
Bhartiya Diwas is celebrated every
year on January 9 in India to mark the
contribution of the overseas Indian
community towards the development
of India. The day commemorates
the return of Mahatma Gandhi from
South Africa to Ahmadabad on
January 9, 1915.
To mark these two important
occasions, this commemorative
event was planned at Indian High
Commission, where the High
Commissioner Muktesh Pardeshi
also read the message of Indian
Prime Minister Narendra Modi about
promoting the use of Hindi language
in New Zealand.
Several prominent academics,
official agencies, student community,
Hindi educators, writers and thinkers
in community who are doing
remarkable work for the promotion
and dissemination of Hindi in New
Zealand, attended the two hours long
seminar.
A future strategy and road map
for the promotion of Hindi language
in New Zealand was discussed and
delved during the seminars with
several guest speakers sharing their
views.
One of the attendees and a
prominent Hindi educator based in
Wellington Sunita Narayan told the
Indian Weekender that the event was
hugely meaningful and encouraging
towards the cherished goal of
preserving the Hindi language among
our diaspora communities.
“After the official inauguration of
the event by the High Commissioner
Muktesh Pardeshi, the attendees
had a chance to express their views
for about an hour that was very
encouraging,” Mrs Narayan said.
The current initiatives, activists
and educators were acknowledged
for their relentless contribution to
the maintenance of Hindi in New
Zealand. Some key challenges
highlighted during the seminar
were the lack of investment and
appropriate resources, including
human resources towards the
preservation and promotion of the
Hindi language in New Zealand.
Notably, Sunita Narayan, along
with another prominent Hindi
educator Dr Pushpa Wood had
on January 10, 2019, launched
the Bharatiya Bhasha evam Shod
Sansthan (Indian Languages and
Research Foundation) – a research
institute dedicated for streamlining
and aligning the nation-wide efforts
in the promotion of Indian languages
in the country, initially working on
Hindi.
Dr Wood had then told the Indian
Weekender, “The Foundation’s
purpose is to advise, develop and
evaluate a strategic approach for
building capability and capacity of
Indian languages providers in New
Zealand.”

this event will be written up into a
discussion paper including all the

are disgusted after their
daughter was racially
abused and dog faeces smeared
on her face by a group of children
at Navy Park in Dunedin on
Sunday, January 12.

Mohammed narrated the incident
to news website Stuff that
happened on the grounds of the
park on Sunday morning.
Ms Zahra said she was pushing her youngest
child on the swing when she saw her nine-year-
old playing near the bushes and few other boys
were also playing in the area.
She added that she kept an eye on her
daughter but could not see or hear anything
unruly or alarming, and at one point, she
noticed all the children ended up in the bushes.
She added that the boys looked like nine-year-
olds and two older boys of age around 12.
Ms Zahra added that a little later she saw her
daughter coming out of the bushes, seemingly
upset and looking for help. Her daughter came
to her and said children in the area ‘smeared
dog poo’ on her face.
Hearing this Ms Zahra went to the boys and
asked who had done this, to which, of course,
everyone denied responsibility, although her
daughter pointed out to a boy who refused but
had dog poo on his hand.
Ms Zahra cried that act was ‘unacceptable’
and this should not be done to anyone. She
added that now she will have to cut short the
playtime of her kids and go back home.
“...your parents would be incredibly
embarrassed if they knew you were doing this,”
Ms Zahra told the children, Stuff reported.
Ms Zahra took her children to her car when
her daughter said that the boys asked if she was
Indian and racially abused before rubbing the
poo on her face.
Ms Zahra’s daughter narrating her ordeal
said that two boys poked sticks on her back and
threatened to hurt her if she didn’t leave and
other two older boys pointed a gun at her and
threatened to shoot her as well.
Ms Zahra had a feeling that it might have
been a toy gun but felt ‘nervous’ when they
were threatening to shoot her.
Ms Zahra’s children are half Fiji-Indian,
and she hails from Canada who moved to New
Zealand in 2009.
Ms Zahra added that her daughter acted
‘really mature’ about the incident. She said
that her daughter apologised to her saying
she should have left the area when the other
children asked her instead asked if she could
play with them.
“My daughter said maybe I shouldn’t have
asked so many questions and I should’ve just
left.
“I explained she doesn’t have to apologise
for being somewhere and remove herself from
public space because she makes other people
uncomfortable.” Ms Zahra told Stuff.
This is not the first time Zahra or her children
have been racially abused. Earlier in 2016,
Zahra and her children were racially abused
and sworn at by an op-shop owner in Oamaru.

“No child, parent or family should feel
unsafe, especially in a children’s park. My heart
goes out to this young girl and her family, and
the majority of this community who I know
will condemn this racist attack also.
“I am encouraged by the comments that
members of the community have made in
support of the family and against racism. Every
community should work together to counter
racism and ensure their parks and spaces are
safe and inclusive for all children.
“Every child has the right to a safe
community, whether in public and private
spaces and schools,” Mr Foon added.
Mr Foon said his team would address
bullying in schools and teach respect, empathy
and belongingness amongst the young students.
“I note that reports indicate that the boys

intermediate school age. I am committed, along
with my fellow Human Rights Commissioners,

Community rallies to support

he community is coming together to
help support the family on an Indian
student who suffered a medical incident
and passed away in Christchurch.
24-year-old Rajat Kumar came to New
Zealand in 2018 from Una district in the state
of Himachal Pradesh in North India and was
enrolled at a polytech in Christchurch. Rajat
had recently completed his studies and was still
on student visa due to expire soon.
On Thursday, January 2, Rajat went to
work where he collapsed and passed away
immediately. Rajat’s close associates also said
that Rajat had breathing issues for which he
was receiving treatment in Christchurch and he
was due to travel back to India on January 17
to meet his family and a get a comprehensive
health check.

Christchurch was informed of the incident by
some of the friends of the deceased who asked
for help with his body repatriation.

insurance offered an undisclosed amount on

body back to India.

says “It wasn’t as hard as I thought to get work

making sure to advise me and give me guidance
on my career. 
“Actors and directors were so humble and
nice and very amused by the fact I rocked up
alone to India to pursue my dreams; it doesn’t
happen very often.”
Sabby asserts that although accommodating,
she did go through her share of the challenges
of being a newbie and accepted as a foreigner

“I do feel the acting training wasn’t as
training in New Zealand for the past year,”
Sabby said. 
Sabby wants to convey some advice to
budding actors and models who dream of

“You will need the patience to wait for your
break and consistent work. Hustle hard, train,

your skill range, take care of yourself and most
of all don’t get discouraged,” Sabby added.

anniversary of Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak
Sikh Youth New Zealand is once again
bringing four days of family summer camp
in the last week of January to be hosted in
West Auckland.
Sikh Youth NZ (SYNZ) is a youth-led charity
that aims to educate, empower, serve and
connect young Sikh New Zealanders, the wider
Sikh community and the New Zealand public.
The annual summer camp is one of the many
activities youth-led community organisation
Sikh Youth New Zealand organises every year
during the school holidays to get a maximum
number of registrations to one of the most
popular summer camps in Auckland.
The aim of this summer camp is to empower
young minds, especially school going children,
to participate in various activities to be held
during the camp that is not limited to just
outdoor exercises but also learning values and
teachings of Sikhism, inspiring young minds
to take leadership roles and spend an eventful
summer making new friends.
The theme for this year’s summer camp is
exploring Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s journey and
teachings of three pillars of Sikhism that is kirat
karna, naam japna, vand chhakna.
The objectives set for the summer camp
is to imbibe those teachings and values of
Guru Nanak into daily working life and in
individuals of all age groups. The organisers,

that will facilitate leadership skills in young

at Eastdale Reserve to celebrate the
Great Indian Kite Festival 2020.
Organisers arranged some 3,000
kites that were almost sold out with
hundreds of families buying on an
average of four to six kites to fly in
the breezy and sunny Sunday.
The green pastures of the grounds
became colourful with men, women
and children clad in their Sunday
family picnic day dressing and flying
hundreds of soaring kites in the sky.
As the programme started at
11 a.m., the ground flocked with
families with their picnic tents,
camping chairs, kites, strings and
string rolls.
While some soared, their kites
slowing into the bright blue skies,
children occupied themselves with
games, bouncy castles, merry-go-
round rides and painting and drawing
in a canopy at the venue.
As the music played in the
background, a group of random men
and women got up and started doing

“Kiwifruit prices rose 32 percent in December to

The price rises for kiwifruit contributed to a 2.1
percent increase in overall fruit and vegetable prices
in December.
Seasonal fruit and vegetables, in particular
potatoes, apples, and onions, were the main
contributors to the rise in fruit and vegetable prices
between November and December. Here are their
weighted average prices per kilo in December 2019:

• apples – up 16 percent to $3.80
• onions – up 8.9 percent to $2.38.
Price rises for potatoes, apples, and onions are
typical in December. These were partly offset by
nectarine prices (down 24 percent) and lettuce prices

prices were down 1.0 percent in December 2019.
Potato crisps (down 4.8 percent), and chocolate
biscuits (down 6.5 percent) were the main drivers
of this fall.
The fall in grocery food prices contributed
to overall food prices decreasing 0.2 percent in
December.

prices
Prices for ready-to-eat foods were up 3.3 percent
for the year ended December 2019, influenced by
burgers and fried fish. This contributed to a 2.4
percent rise in overall food prices for the year.
In April 2019, the minimum wage rose from
$16.50 to $17.70 an hour. Changes to the minimum
wage tend to impact more on workers in the retail
and food industries.
Meat, poultry, and fish prices were also up 4.2
percent for the year, mainly driven by preserved,
prepared, and processed meats, in particular bacon,
ham, and sausages. Here are their weighted average
prices in December 2019:

listings fall to the lowest in four years, according to an analysis
of over 66,000 vacancies listed on Trade Me Jobs for the quarter
ending 31 December 2019.
Trade Me’s Jeremy Wade said after years of solid listing growth,
2019 was a tough year for the job market and in the final quarter we
saw the impact of low business confidence.
“New Zealand’s job market ended 2019 on a sour note with new
job listings experiencing the biggest percentage drop in years, falling
10.6 per cent year-on-year with 24 of the 26 sectors on Trade Me Jobs

Al Nahyan, along the margins of
the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week

Mr Bainimarama also reaffirmed
his personal commitment to building
a stronger bilateral relationship with
the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
He said the relationship between
the two countries has resulted in
the establishment of a new UAE
Diplomatic Mission in Suva.
At the meeting, Mr Bainimarama
highlighted that one of the
government’s primary goals is
exploring and securing as many
opportunities from our development
partners especially the UAE so that
Fiji reaches its ambitious yet possible
target of 100 percent renewable
energy by 2030.
He used the opportunity to
convey his appreciation to the
UAE Government, for the generous
support of US$5 million through
the initiative of the Abu Dhabi Fund
for Development (ADFD) and the
UAE-Pacific Partnership Fund. This
support will assist Fiji with target of
generating 100% renewable energy
by 2030.
The initiative saw the construction
of three hybrid solar systems in
Lakeba, Kadavu and Rotuma which
has resulted in many social-economic
benefits, increased productivity, and
improved health care services and
education services.
Mr Bainimarama also conveyed his
gratitude to the Crown Prince for the
generous assistance of $10 million,
through the UAE Red Crescent,
which assisted in the rehabilitation
and construction of three schools in
Fiji  that were adversely affected by
Tropical Cyclone Winston in 2016.

before the rough and tumble of the hustings and the fickle
surmises of pollsters and pundits.
But before the last of the silly season gives way to the gathering
momentum of a new election year, it’s tempting to the gaze into
the ball or read the tea leaves and let the imagination fly a bit...
Some of the last polls of 2019 said National’s support was
good enough for it to form the government after this year’s poll,
with Simon Bridges as the next prime minister. But that was a
good three quarters of a year out from the real action and there’s
much that can sway voters in the long run up.
While National would have to have the numbers to govern

current coalition, though all of them will have to at least maintain
or improve their pervious poll performance. This is no easy task

Test cricket should not fall prey to clicks, hits & eyeballs

he International Cricket
Council (ICC) seems to be on
a path to change the duration
of Test cricket into a four-day affair.
To do so, they have highlighted
analytical facts of most matches
being completed in less than five
days and freeing up those un-utilised
days for something more useful. The
only thought that immediately comes
to mind is the commercial advantage
and the additional revenue that can
be generated from it.
Test cricket is not as lucrative
as the limited-overs version of the
game as regards media sales and
viewership. Therefore, the phrase
“money makes the world go round”
is appropriate to the thoughts of the
ICC in making the change of what
has stood firm through many decades
of Test cricket.
Another lame excuse given is
that the players at present are being
subjected to many days of cricket in a
year and need time to rest. This does
make sense if they actually mean
what they are saying. Unfortunately,
one does not get the confidence from
the statement or the way in which
the ICC is progressing towards their
mission regarding the use of those
free days.
The conventional game of Test
cricket is all about patience, strategy,
skill, stamina and the ups and downs
of what one experiences in one’s life.
Unfortunately, the patrons, players
and the crowd that pay, sponsor
and follow the game presently are
moving away from the traditional
ways of how cricket was appreciated
earlier.
A fighting knock by a batsman to
save or draw the game was enjoyed as
much as one playing a swashbuckling
innings. Cricket, one said, had
character and one displayed it in the
five days of the match. Cricketers
today, understandably, are far more
aggressive in their approach. In order
to become a superstar and a crowd
puller, flamboyant stroke play and
performing for the masses is much
more important.
The sole reason is for them to get
more opportunities in branding and
marketing themselves, especially
in the franchise based limited overs
cricket that is being played around
the world.
This is why many matches are
finishing in four days. It is not
because the batsmen have forgotten
the way to play Test cricket, but
because if they played it in the patient
and conventional way, they would be
branded as “bores”. To overcome
this, both bowlers and batsmen are
experimenting options that they have
still to master.
In the case of the batsmen, it is
their shot making strokes and for the
bowlers it is in the deliveries they
have learnt while playing the shorter
version of the game. Test cricket is
all about being consistent.
Therefore, analysing and
understanding ones strength and
weaknesses is the key element
for success. Every player at the
international level is capable of
playing nearly every shot in the book
or bowling a variety of deliveries.
The difference, however, is to know
when to play or bowl it, especially,
when one is under pressure.
Reducing the duration of a Test
match from five days to four is not a
change that is required at the moment.
This will not make any difference in
bringing crowds or viewer-ship. It
will only diffuse the genuine form of
the game, which will gradually lead
to three days and then maybe to its
ultimate demise.
The issue that is arising is that
teams are not being able to adapt
to the conditions away from home,
especially while playing Test cricket.
The paucity of time is not giving
teams the luxury of getting used to
the playing conditions. This hampers
in the preparation of a Test cricketer
for making him match-ready
overseas.
Therefore, it is more important to
look at the reason as to what will it
take Test cricket to become more
glorious than why it needs to be
tampered with.
The ICC has made a good
beginning in establishing a Test
Championship and they should put
in effort to popularise it further.
Test cricket should be the ultimate
form of the game and performances
in it the pinnacle of achievement
as regards awards and recognition.
Giving players time to adapt and get
used to conditions is another way to
make matches more competitive.
World cricket should not fall prey
to the modern marketing warfare of
the digital world of clicks, hits and
eyeballs. The over indulgence of
the shorter version of the game to
earn every bit of revenue is what
is bringing tiredness, fatigue and
injuries to cricketers.
Test cricket is fighting a losing
battle as the modern viewers have
been brought up on the limited-overs
version that started with 60 overs a
side and is gradually moving towards
a 10-over battle.
A winner is all that people want
to see. However, cricket is not about
winning and losing but about how
one plays the game. Time, is just
one excuse but the major worry that
one foresees is that the very core and
character that cricket stood for is
losing its way to maybe extinction.

AB de Villiers could possibly return to the national
side ahead of the World T20, scheduled to be held
in Australia later this year.

2020 Olympics and Paralympics ticket designs
unveiled
T he designs of the tickets for the Tokyo
Olympic and Paralympic Games were
unveiled on Wednesday by the organizers, using
four traditional Japanese colours.
Tokyo 2020 (The Tokyo Organising
Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games) said that each ticket
features a sport pictogram that corresponds to the specific discipline, a venue
pictogram, the Tokyo 2020 Games emblem, and is colour-coded according
to the venue and the city hosting the ticketed event. The organizers said that
the design is inspired by the three types of rectangular shapes that form the
Tokyo 2020 Emblems and a colour scheme used in the creation of fabrics for
kimonos dating back to over 1000 years ago. The four colours used in the
designs are red, blue, purple and green. A total of 59 Olympic tickets and 25
Paralympic ticket designs for all competition events were unveiled. Delivery
of the tickets will start in May.

Barcelona becomes highest-earning football club
F C Barcelona has topped the list of the richest
football clubs in the world for the first time with
a revenue of 840.8 million euros ($935.97 million)
during the 2018-19 season, according to Deloitte's
Football Money League.
The revenue generated by the club is a 22 per cent
jump over that of the last season, when it earned
690.4 million euros, due to an increase in commercial
revenue (383.5 million euros, up 19 per cent) and broadcast revenue (298.1
million euros, 34 per cent more), according to the ranking of football clubs
produced annually by the accounting firm Deloitte, reports Efe news.
The increase in its earnings has allowed Barca to surpass its arch-rival
Real Madrid, which earned 757.3 million euros, one per cent more than the
previous season, when its revenue stood at 750.9 million euros.
The top 10 of the list includes five English clubs -- Manchester United,
which is in third place, Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea
-- German club Bayern Munich in fourth, France's Paris Saint-Germain in
fifth and Italy's Juventus in 10th.

driving while impaired (DWI) and
riding with an impaired driver (RWI),
a new study suggests.
The study, published in the journal
Pediatrics, found that the protective
effect of parental monitoring and
teen awareness of parents' attitudes
about alcohol lasted as much as four
years after leaving high school.
"There is great prevention power
in intentional parenting and a strong,
reliable, mutual relationship here
can make all the difference in the
world, including helping to identify
the development of youth alcohol/
drug use disorder and the need for
specialised treatment services for
addiction," said study lead author
Federico Vaca.
Motor vehicle crashes are the
leading cause of death for teens and
young adults and nearly a quarter of
these are alcohol-related crashes.
For the findings, researchers
analysed data from the NEXT
Generation Health Study, a national
longitudinal study of high schoolers
run by the US National Institutes
of Health (NIH) and others that
followed 2,785 young people over
the course of seven years.
They found that the protective
effect of parental monitoring and
teen awareness of parents' attitudes
about alcohol lasted as much as four
years after leaving high school.
Generally, for women, binge
drinking involves consuming four or
more alcoholic drinks in two hours;
for men, it's five or more drinks.
Extreme bingeing, a growing
concern, refers to drinking up to 15
or more alcoholic drinks on a single
occasion. But the study showed
parents can have a positive influence.

researchers have found that maintaining
five healthy habits may increase years
lived free of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular
disease and cancer.
"Previous studies found that following a
healthy lifestyle improves life expectancy
and reduces risk of chronic diseases, such as
diabetes, cardiovascular ailments and cancer.
But few studies looked at the effects of
lifestyle factors on life expectancy free from
such diseases," said author Yanping Li.
"The study provides strong evidence that
following a healthy lifestyle can substantially
extend the years a person lives disease-free,"
Li said.
The researchers looked at 34 years of data
from 73,196 women and 28 years of data from
38,366 men participating in the Nurses' Health
Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up
Study, respectively.
Healthy diet was defined as food with high
score on the Alternate Healthy Eating Index,
at least 30-minute a day moderate to vigorous
exercise, healthy weight (body mass index of
18.5-24.9 kg/m2), and moderate alcohol intake
- up to one serving a day for women and two for
men. Women who practiced four-five healthy
habits at age 50 lived an average of 34.4 more
years free of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases
and cancer, compared with 23.7 healthy years
among women who practiced none.
Men practicing four-five healthy habits at
age 50 lived 31.1 years free of chronic disease,
compared with 23.5 years among men who
practiced none.

Ingredients
• 1 cup urad dal
• 1 pinch asafoetida
• 1 tablespoon refined oil
• 2 pieces green chilli
• 1 teaspoon ginger
• 4 cup hung curd
• For Garnishing
• 4 teaspoon red chilli powder
• 4 teaspoon chaat masala
• 4 teaspoon green chutney
• 4 teaspoon powdered black
pepper
• 4 teaspoon tamrind chutney
Method
• Wash and soak the urad dal in
water for 2 hours. Strain the
water and reserve for grinding.
• Then add it to the blender. Add
salt, green chilly, hing and
ginger. Add little of the reserved
water and grind it to smooth
consistency.
PANI PURI
Ingredients
• 2 cup semolina
• water as required
• 3 tablespoon cumin powder
• 5 green chilli
• 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
• refined oil as required
• 1 1/2 tablespoon black salt
• 4 tablespoon crushed jaggery
• 1 cup boiled chick peas
• tamrind chutney as required
• 1 cup tamarind paste
• 3 tablespoon roasted cumin powder
• 1 cup coriander leaves
• 6 tablespoon wheat flour

• 2 tablespoon boondi

Method
• To begin with, take a large bowl, put semolina, baking
soda along with little salt and prepare a stiff dough
with the help of the said ingredients. Then, cover it
with a muslin cloth, let it remain aside for about half
an hour.
• Once done, roll out few small sized balls from the
prepared dough.
• Next, place the balls on a flat surface and with the help
of wheat flour, flatten and make them thin enough as
to give them the appearance of that of round rotis.
