M
any people understand the time
and patience it takes to learn to
play an instrument, but they
might not be aware of the work that goes
into perfecting the art of conducting.
Becoming a conductor takes time and
patience, and being the leader also requires
a concise skill set. Conductors must know
how to play an instrument, but they also
must have a trained ear, the ability to
interpret the music, as well as extensive
training and education in the art.
For the second year, Bishop
Gadsden had the opportunity to host
the Charleston Symphony Orchestra
Conducting Workshop, which provided
an opportunity for young conductors to
gain hands-on training and learn from
many of the finest conductors connected
with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra.

Master Painter
SEABROOK ARTIST GUILD TO HOST DEMO AND WORKSHOP
BY SHARON PECK
For The Island Connection

T
he Seabrook Island Artist Guild will welcome one
of the country’s premier coastal landscape painters
to its Feb. 18 meeting. Sergio Roffo, an elected
fellow of both the American Society of Marine Artists
and the Guild of Boston Artists, will be the demo artist
at 2 p.m. at the Lake House and will also hold a two-day
workshop from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 20 and Feb. 21 at
the Oyster Catcher Community Center.
Roffo, one of the youngest artists to be designated
a Copley Master by the Copley Society of Boston, has
been inspired by the work of traditional painters such as
George Inness and Albert Bierstadt. His representations
of coastal landscapes reveal a luminous, masterful feeling.
Upon viewing his art, you will discover a precise sense of
value and atmospheric perspective that conveys a relaxed
sense of calmness, a characteristic that defines his work.
Roffo continually strives to capture the elusive essence
that is nature. He described his mission as “trying to
convey to the viewer the spirituality and sacredness of my
work, indicating the harmony of nature through color
and light.” Roffo offered that “As artists, our creative been selected for inclusion in numerous publications then create art.
