1. Applied Research is a methodology used to solve a specific, practical problem of an

individual or group. The study and research is use in business, medicine and education in
order to find solutions that may cure diseases, solve scientific problems or develop
technology.
Example:
Ways to market products.

2. Basic Research refers to study and research that is meant to increase our scientific
knowledge base. This type of research is often purely theoretical with the intent of
increasing our understanding of certain phenomena or behavior but does not seek to solve
or treat these problems.

Example:
A study looking at how caffeine consumption impacts the brain.

3. Correlation Research is a type of research design where a researcher seeks to

understand what kind of relationships naturally occurring variables have with one
another. In simple terms, correlational research seeks to figure out if two or more
variables are related and, if so, in what way.

Example:
Weight: Some people weigh 150 pounds and others weigh 250. Weight clearly varies.
4. Descriptive Research is defined as a research method that describes the characteristics
of the population or phenomenon that is being studied. This methodology focuses more
on the “what” of the research subject rather than the “why” of the research subject.

Example:
Descriptive research can be used is if a school district that wishes to evaluate teachers
attitudes about using technology in the classroom. By conducting surveys and observing
their comfortableness using technology through observational methods, the researcher
can gauge what can help understand if a full-fledged implementation can face an issues.
This also helps in understanding if the students are impacted in any way with this change.

5. Ethnographic Research a “branch of anthropology that involves trying to understand

how people live their lives.” For the purposes of market research, ethnography is an
indirect methodology where consumers’ natural behavior in their everyday environment
is observed. Ethnography allows researchers to immerse themselves in the consumers’
lifestyle in order to understand their point of view in detail and depth.

Example:
Social media is used by 2.3 billion people and any one Internet user has on average 5.54
social media accounts.

6. Experimental Research is any research conducted with a scientific approach, where a

set of variables are kept constant while the other set of variables are being measured as
the subject of experiment. There are times when you don’t have enough data to support
your decisions. In such situations, you need to carry out experiments to discover the facts.

Example:
Conducting a laboratory test.

7. Exploratory Research is defined as a research used to investigate a problem which is

not clearly defined. It is conducted to have a better understanding of the existing problem,
but will not provide conclusive results.

Example:
Consider a scenario where a juice bar owner feels that increasing the variety of juices will
enable increase in customers, however he is not sure and needs more information. The
owner intends to carry out an exploratory research to find out and hence decides to do an
exploratory research to find out if expanding their juices selection will enable him to get
more customers of if there is a better idea.

8. Historical Research studies the meaning of past events in an attempt to interpret the
facts and explain the cause of events, and their effect in the present events.

Example:
One example from the textbook is the documented expedition of Spanish explorer
Hernando DeSoto who discovered the Mississippi river.

9. Phenomenological Research is an approach to qualitative research that focuses on the

commonality of a lived experience within a particular group. The fundamental goal of the
approach is to arrive at a description of the nature of the particular phenomenon
(Creswell, 2013).

Example:
Studying the green flash that sometimes happens just after sunset or just before sunrise.

10. Action Research refers to a wide variety of evaluative, investigative, and analytical
research methods designed to diagnose problems or weaknesses—whether
organizational, academic, or instructional—and help educators develop practical
solutions to address them quickly and efficiently. \

Example:
Identify a problem to be studied.
