I t is a great honor to write my first public message as an Ithna'asheri Union (IU) Chairman in the

the country once ruled by a mighty beast,
First Saddam and now America's regime,
It's going through a difficult and torturous scheme,
Men tortured, women harassed and children abused,
Human rights and freedom is what Iraq has been refused,
Abusing Iraqi prisoners and covering it up in one word
called sorry,

It is very inspiring to see young blood doing so much nowadays which was not done before. It is one of
the biggest tasks in our hands, to bring up the Youth of the community. The main aim of the IU is to
transform and mould these Youth as successful leaders of the future. We have to make them well equipped
in the matters of religion, first and foremost, then education and also not forgetting finance. This will
make us sleep peacefully in our graves knowing that the Youth left behind will handle the matters of our
community within these three categories adequately and effectively.
In my almost one year of chairing the IU, I and my team are working hard in the fields of sports, scouts
and volunteers. In the Sports section we are trying to rebuild or rather renovate the sports complex trying
to add facilities like canteen, swimming pool and multi-purpose hall. We have even increased the number
of members of the Union Sports Club. For the scouts, the activities are in the advance level. More and
more members are joining the section. We have also registered ourselves with the Tanzania Scouts
Association and have become a recognized group. We have done some exciting programs like watching
of the planets from a telescope. Volunteers as always are ready for any action. Services at the mosque
and other related areas are as usual. Distribution of food and clothing is also one of our main programs
in Mahe Mubarak. We have also tried to involve the aged members of our community (better known as
senior citizens) in many activities such as picnics, exercises and community services.
In conclusion, there are many things we can do for our community. But a group of ten to twenty people
cannot cater the needs of the whole community. Therefore, it is my most humble request to all community
members to join hands with the IU in bringing the community to the brink of becoming true awaiters of

Literary Section Activity Report 2005
News Flash
YOUTH MAGAZINE ISSUE NO. 2
C oming to the month of Zilhajj, it was time to re-
launch the second issue of the Youth Magazine
with the Little Youth. The Youth Magazine with
the Little Youth was put on sale on the day of Eid ul
Hajj, 22nd January 2005 after Salaat ul Eid. The
response from the general community was just great &
added to our encouragement as well. We thank all
those who advertised in the Magazine, contributed the
articles & assisted us in any possible way. May Allah
(SWT) bless them all.
MUHARRAM QUEST
In the month of Muharram the Literary Section launched
the Muharram Quest. It was a quiz book, which
consisted of questions pertaining to Muharram,
Kerbala & other Islamic issues. The main objective of
the quiz was to educate the youths about the event of
Kerbala as well as to increase their awareness
pertaining to various Islamic issues. It was sold at a
price worth Tshs. 500/- only. The response was quite
encouraging.
Q&A WITH DR. MURTADHA ALIDINA
On Saturday 5th February 2005, the ITHNA - ASHERI
UNION LITERARY SECTION had organized a talk
session with Sheikh Dr. Murtaza Alidina followed by a
Q & A session at Zahra Towers {Terrace}. The program
was for boys & girls between the ages of 13-25 yrs.
The program began at 8.30 pm with recitation of the
Holy Qur'an followed by a talk by Dr. Alidina on
“HOW SHOULD A MUSLIM YOUTH FACE MODERN
CHALLENGES” The talk was about 45 minutes long,
after which Br Shabbir Manekia gave a small talk on
the upcoming IRAN SUMMER camp. Thereafter, the Q
& A session commenced, whereby questions pertaining
to different youth issues were raised and were duly
answered by Dr. Alidina. At 10.30 p.m, the program
was officially closed with Vote of Thanks by one of the
Literary Section members, after which dinner was
served.
Many community youths appreciated the program and
praised the Literary Section for the event.
ULAMA DAY 2005
Having organized the Ulama Day for the past two
years, the Ithna-Asheri Union Literary Section once
again organized it this year on the wafat of our Holy
Prophet, 28th of Safar 1426 A.H (8th of April 2005).
Following its tradition, there was a poster making
competition between groups of youths of our

four participants had to choose a particular Aalim and
were supposed to design a poster describing the life
and great sacrifices made by that Aalim. All the
posters were put on display at the mosque compound
on Friday. 8th April from 10.00 a.m onwards. There
was also a display of photos of various Ulama. A large
number of our community members attended the event.
The winner of the Poster Making competition was
Mazaher Kassam and his group for their poster on
Syed Khamenei. On the same day a paper quiz
(consisting of questions from the posters) was also
distributed and participants were given half an hour to
complete it. A total of 60 youths participated in the
quiz competition and the winner was Mustafa Kermalli.
RESPONDING TO THE CALL OF IMAM HUSSEIN (A.S)
After having done the annual events: “Ulama's Day
2005 & The Youth Bulletin, the Ithna-Asheri Literary
Section in collaboration with Jaffery Medical Students'
Association (JAMSA) came up with the idea to
commemorate the greatest sacrifice of all, the sacrifice
of Al-Hussein (AS).
The program comprised of three talks: “Position of
Ahlul Bayt in reforming Youth” by Maalim Shabbir
Datoo, “Role of Ulama in the Ghaybat of the 12th
Imam (AS)” by Dr. Kamaal Sheriff & “How can women
respond to the Call of Imam Hussein (AS)” by JAMSA.
Together with the speeches, there were two dramas
based on the following themes: “The Kuffian Deceit
(before the event Kerbala)” & “How can a Youth
respond to the Call of Imam Hussein (AS)”.
To top it all, there was a delicious dinner served & all
we heard was “WELL DONE!”
BRAIN BUSTER BONANZA
Based on the innovative idea of the 'Science Olympics'
held in the year 2004, the literary section decided to
hold something more entertaining, educational and
thought provoking. "THE BRAIN BUSTER BONANZA"
The Brain Buster Bonanza was organized on 26th of
June 2005 at 'Boarding House'. This time it was
decided that the youth organizations would be tested,
therefore 8 groups (each consisting of a maximum of 5
participants were chosen) these included: JAMSAA,
DEBATING SOCIETY, IUVC, SCOUTS, FOREIGN
STUDENTS, AL-MIS,AND TWO RANDOM GROUPS(i.e.
'THE REDS' and 'THE GREENS').
Three weeks before the event, the groups were given a
homework; whose theme was 'Inventions': The groups
were required to invent something from scratch that

therefore caused hurt and anger to Muslims that it
seemed the West just could not understand. To add to this,
the media turned against the Muslims during the Rushdie
Affair; and spoke of 'us' and 'them' - Muslims understood
that they were seen as an 'Other'. News and current-
affair features, chat shows, the tabloids as well as the
quality papers, carried articles that showed Muslims as
alien because of their inability to assimilate into
British/Western society. Muslims were labeled as narrow-
minded 'fanatics', 'fundamentalists' & book burners.
The anti-Islamic sentiment in the West was reborn and I
believe that this paved the way to wider implications of -
Islam Bashing- Rushdie was on a mission with an agenda.
Rushdie wielding his pen performed the task indirectly by
inciting hatred and bigotry against people simply for the
faith they follow. Whatever has followed after the
Rushdie affair can be compared with new anti-Islamic
sentiment and all too evident in Iraq today.
I remember that in 1998 the Metropolitan Museum in
New York had a piece of “art” rendering of Holy
Mary(Lady Mariam A.S.) using elephant faeces was
displayed. Then-Mayor Guiliani saw it as highly
provocative and an insult to the Catholic community and
had it removed. I am also reminded of the persistent
ridicule and harassment to anyone who questions the
Holocaust. Why then is it an expression of freedom when
Rushdie defames and insults the entire notion of Islam?
Throughout the Rushdie Affair, the media came down
heavily against Muslims; journalists and writers spoke
out in support of Rushdie, and his right to freedom of
expression. No voices lent support to the hurt suffered
by the Muslims - to my memory only one writer, Ronald
Dahl, spoke out against Rushdie, and his insensitivity in
insulting the beliefs of Muslims and what became of
him? The media hounded him as a Nazi sympathizer!
Today Christianity has become so weak, that it no longer
defended itself against those attacking God. Jesus is
blasphemed and everybody laughs!
In a recent Christmas show Prophet Jesus A.S was
portrayed as a Homosexual (Nazubillah )by Jerry
Springer. The Holy Virgin Mary (A.S) is insulted

repeatedly without any reverence to her status and one
finds Christianity is morally corrupted …. indeed Salman
Rushdie's Satanic verses is aimed at this same direction to
either provoke Muslims or to contain them to accept
divisive opinions and ridicule of the Holy Prophet and his
pure progeny to such an extent that it would be no more
sacrosanct.
Finally this caught my eye when in an article that
appeared in The Sunday Telegraph (UK) by Norman
Stone entitled 'We Need Russian Help against Islam',
stating that: The Mahdi [the leader of Muslims] is the enemy
of mankind, and particularly womankind, and we need all
the allies we can get. The world as a whole must unite to
make sure that fundamentalist Islam does not get away with
it. (The Sunday Telegraph, 19th February 1989).
The question that I am posing is: Are we ready to be the
soldiers of Imam e Zamana (A.S.)? May Allah S.W.T
guard our young generation and offer them more impetus
in learning and defending Islam.

The Satanic Verses & Salman Rushdie ...revisited.

Br. Husseinali Datoo re-visits and analyzes the The
Rushdie saga for our younger readers of YOUTH
Magazine.
Ahmed Salman Rushdie, an Immigrant Indian was born in
Bombay and was educated mainly in England where he
lived.
In 1989 Rushdie insulted and slandered 1.2 billion
Muslims with passages in The Satanic Verses that
questioned the authenticity of the Quran, ridiculed the
Prophet and referred to Prophet Muhammad as
"Mahound," a term used in the past by Christian authors
to insult Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.W).
retold by Rushdie. According to the legend, some of the
Koran's original verses originated with Satan, and
Muhammad later deleted them. By repeating this legend,
Rushdie offended Muslims by associating the holy Koran
with the work of Satan.
The Ithna-asheri Union in Dar es Salaam also had an
open forum where Rushdie was condemned and it was
decided to lobby the Tanzanian Government to ban the
book as well. India was the first country that banned the
book followed by Tanzania amongst a few. Anti-Rushdie
demonstrations and book burnings took place in Britain
and many parts of the world.
In U.K., Rushdie attempted to defend himself and British
Muslims demanded that the government ban the book as
blasphemous. The British government refused on the
grounds that English law protected only the Christian
religion from acts of blasphemy and went on to say that
freedom of speech was the corner stone of western
democracy.
On February 14, 1989, the day before Rushdie's book
was to be published in the United States, Ayatollah
Khomeini, issued a fatwa against Rushdie. Imam
Khomeini's fatwa shocked the world and not the least the
Muslim world that was perplexed as well as he enjoined
the fatwa from the Ayah of Holy Quran that was never
even contemplated, the fatwa read:
“The author of The Satanic Verses, a text written, edited,
and published against Islam, against the Prophet of Islam,
and against the Koran, along with all the editors and
publishers aware of its contents, are condemned to
capital punishment. I call on all valiant Muslims wherever
course', Balloon Trouble', 'Silver Egg' and many other
activities.
After a grueling day the overall winners were 'THE
GREENS'. The participants in the group were: Syed
Jaffer Rizvi, Minhaal Ramani, Meisam Fazel,Jaffer
Lalji, and Meisam Ramani. In 2nd place where 'THE
REDS' and in third place where 'The Foreign
Students'. The winners received a cash prize of Tshs
50,000/=, 30,000/=, and 20,000/= respectively.
We would like to thank all those who assisted us in
organizing the event: Union Sports Club, Fidahussein
Company, Br. Aliasgher Esmail & Central Board of
Education. Our special thanks goes to Br. Imran
Hassam, whose dedication & support was a valuable
asset to the success of our activity.
FATHERS' DAY
After organizing it for the first time in 2004, the
Ithna-Asheri Union Literary Section yet again
organized “FATHER'S DAY” on 17th August
2005/13th Rajab 1426 A.H at the Gent's
imambargah. A table with attractive gifts &
beautifully-worded frames and cards for the event
were set up near the entrance of the mosque. After
the majlis, Br. Ali Najafali presented a brief talk on
'Our Fathers' concluding it by saying “… Life did not
come with an instruction book, that's why we have
Fathers!” Everyone appreciated the effort put up by
the Literary Section.
BRAIN OF COMMUNITY 2005
As the Holy month of Ramadhan was approaching,
the Literary Section decided to embark on its next
event, the “BRAIN OF THE COMMUNITY 2005”- A
quiz competition featuring youths aged from 13 to
20 years. The competition took place during the first
2 weekends of Ramadhan , during which the
qualifying phase, semi-finals and the finals were
Hassanali and Br. Shaneabbas Raza in 2nd and 3rd
position respectively. The other 3 finalists were Br.
Aliraza Hassan, Br. Suheil Abdulrasul and Br.
Aliabbas Jivraj. Congratulations to all the finalists,
and a very well deserved 'hongera' to Br. Jaffer Ali
for having successfully achieving 1st position for 2
consecutive years.

cheer for, as all the teams had performed well.
Finally, it was time for the presentation ceremony
whereby, all the finalists were awarded trophies and
books along with other prizes.
We thank all those who assisted us in one way or the
other, especially the donors and sponsors of all the
prizes. We hope to receive continuous support from
you in all our future activities.

The book also had prostitutes assuming the identity and
names of Prophet's wives, and the very Quranic symbol
for their seclusion and protection, "The Curtain," is
transformed into the image of a brothel, which men
circumambulate as worshipers do the sacred shrine (
Kaaba) during the pilgrimage to Mecca.
In the book, he describes a person who dreams about
God revealing his will to the Prophet Muhammad
(S.A.W.W) who passes on the sacred words to humanity
through the Koran. As part of the dream sequence, a
scribe called "Salman" writes down God's commands that
are coming from the lips of Muhammad. The scribe,
however, decides to play a trick by changing some of the
divine words. The title of the book refers to an old legend
they may be in the world to execute this sentence without
delay, so that no one henceforth will dare insult the

In addition to the fatwa, An Islamic Foundation in Islamic
Republic of Iran also offered a bounty on Salman
Rushdie, the fugitive Rushdie had no way but to lead a
miserable life of being on the run injected with fear
protected by the British police who spent millions of
pounds of British tax payers money!. As if that was not
enough the United Nations and Western Nations also
joined in protecting him!
In the cultural apparatus within which Muslims are brought
up, nothing is more sacred than Islam. The Satanic Verses

In the qualifying phase, 48 participants were divided
into 8 groups of 6 participants each, out of which the
top three from each group qualified for the semi-
finals. The 18 semi-finalists were further divided into
3 groups of 6 participants each. The anxiety levels
were high, and the excitement even greater. Only the
top 2 participants would advance to final stage.
After a few double-ups and negatives, we received
our 6 finalists, who would battle for the title of “Brain
of the Community 2005”.
D-day had arrived, participants tensed as ever,
unable to decide on what to study and what not to.
The audience attended in large numbers, eagerly
waiting to find out who was going to be crowned the
winner this year. The competition was stiff, none
wanting to give up till the last round. In the end, Br.

Know Islam

D ua is an Arabic word derived from the word
'Da-aa' meaning 'to call', therefore 'Dua' is an
act of calling, pleading, beseeching, insisting
and requesting. As mentioned in the books of
jurisprudence, 'Dua' is certainly a nature of worship. In
the Holy Qur'an Allah (S.W.T.) says, “I have not
created people and jinn except for My worship.” This
is quite sufficient indicator to a person who ignores
Dua, to be a transgressor and as such to be liable of
punishment.
Once the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.W.) said to his
companions, “Should I show you a strong armour that
will protect you from the enemies as well increase your
sustenance?” They replied, “O the Prophet of Allah,
show us that armour.” The Holy Prophet (S.A.W.W.)
said, “It is to make Dua day and night to the Most
Powerful Allah (S.W.T.)”
Mam Ali (A.S) also said, “Dua is an armour and shield
of a Mu'amin by which he becomes victorious."Dua is
such a powerful weapon that it can reverse the destiny
which was already decreed, but its condition is that the
Dua should be a sincere one and wholeheartedly
inclining towards Allah (S.W.T.). A Dua prayed
carelessly, hastily and inattentively is surely bound to
be rejected. It is not of any significance that you should
keep murmuring Dua for long hours and the mind is
roaming at various places, but even a very short span
of time is sufficient for a Dua if its conditions are
adhered to.
8 Imagination is the strongest nation on earth
In olden times a king of Iran named Nasiruddeen once
went to Najaf for the Ziyarat of Imam Ali (A.S.). He
saw there a blind person at the gate. When he was
asked by the king of his purpose of visit, he replied
that one whole year had passed but his wish to regain
his eye-sight was not yet accepted. The king sensed
that he was there at the gates to beg for money from
the visitors, so he gave a stern warning to the blind
man that, “I am now going in the Holy Shrine for
Ziyarat but when I come out and yet I see your Hajat
has not been fulfilled I shall chop your head, because it
is impossible that anyone's sincere Dua could be
rejected over here.” So the blind person then started
praying earnestly and sincerely, for the sake of his
dear life, shedding tears and lamenting because he
was now in a state of alarm, his genuine pleading and
beseeching bore the fruits and his eye sight was
restored instantly before the king came out from the
Haram.
When our Duas are not answered we should not be
despaired because Allah (S.W.T.) knows the best for us.
He (S.W.T.) is the Knower of the unseen, so He can't just
hand over to us whatever we want, just like handing
over a loaded gun to a toddler crying for it. Imam
Ja'fer Sadiq (A.S.) said that one should not be
disappointed and despaired when his/her Dua is not
answered, one should not draw back saying 'whatever
has been decreed shall happen' but Dua should be
made constantly, imploring, requesting, and beseeching
Allah (S.W.T.), because a door which is constantly
knocked shall surely once be opened. There are some
destinies which are decreed for us and they can't be
reversed by any means. Yet there are some decrees
which can be altered by the help of Duas.
The Holy Qur'an explicitly says regarding Dua in these
terms: “Say, my Lord would not care for you were it
not for your Dua.” S.Furqaan:77. Then, “And call on
Him fearing and hoping.” S.A'araf: 56. Then again in
S.Baqarah:186, “And when My servants ask you
concerning Me then surely I am very near; I answer
the prayer of the supplicant when he calls on Me, so
they should answer My call and believe in Me that
they may walk in the right way.”
If a Dua is not answered one should not be despaired
because Imam Ali (A.S.) has said that sometimes God
Almighty delays in answering a Dua so as to give both,
a greater reward and a further blessing. Therefore we
should never ever stop doing Duas because its
apparent as well as hidden benefits are numerous and
most rewarding.

shelved due to the outbreak of the Iran-Iraq war and the
imposition of the consequent economic sanctions. The
Islamic Republic nonetheless signed contracts in 1995 with
Russia and resumed the construction of one of its power
plants, since, under the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty
signed in 1968; Iran has the right to enrich Uranium. It
wasn't until 2002 that the US began to question Iran's
ulterior motives and have since unsuccessfully tried to get
Iran to surrender its right whereas the US has technically
been violating the treaty by supporting the US-NATO
weapons sharing program the whole time but that's a
different story. Now, I don't know about you, but I think it's
plain weird that someone would support a project for a
good chunk of forty years and then suddenly experience
a change of heart, about the same time that a quest of
self-aggrandizement has been initiated in the Middle
East. They claim that Iran is planning on developing a
nuclear weapon. Fair enough. But here's the ironic part:
The United States' Department of Energy's first goal is:
“To protect our national security by applying advanced
science and nuclear technology to the nation's defense”.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think what that means is that
it is alright for them to protect themselves but not ok for
Iran to protect itself which makes perfect sense right?
Wrong. As a matter of fact, Iran just happens to be
surrounded by neighbors that, predominantly, host US
military bases which would make it safe to assume that
they carry nuclear weapons as well: Saudi Arabia to the
south, Iraq and Israel (definitely read this:

To the west, and Afghanistan and Pakistan to the east. In
fact, not doing anything to “protect national security”
would be as good as saying, “ok, here's my crotch. Feel
free to kick me with your steel-toed boot”. I'm not saying
Iran needs to develop a nuclear weapon; all I'm saying is
that it would make sense to me if they did. But that's
where it gets complicated.
The world is a crazy place, spinning round and round out
of control again. You, without a shred of doubt, already
know this, I know, as a result of your routine crime fighting
endeavors. I think that the real problem behind this whole
Iran issue is that Western and capitalist countries and
ideologies are having a tough time accepting the fact
that Iranian democracy totally contrasts their own; and as
a result of the lack of the moral bankruptcy, amongst
other things, they label it as illegitimate. Some times I feel
that convincing these people or ideologies to forsake this
notion is just as likely as mothers in New Orleans naming
their daughters Katrina. A tall, lanky, prominent, and wise

American leader once said, “Democracy is the
government of the people, by the people, for the
people”. Twenty-six years ago, the grand Ayatollah
Khomeini led the Iranian people in the Islamic Revolution
of 1979; the West has been going crazy ever since. That
on its own speaks volumes about just how powerful we,
the Muslims, are capable of becoming if only we
bothered leaving behind all these trifling fights amongst
ourselves and stood united for once. Not as powerful as
you though, since the average Joe doesn't posses the
ability to fire laser beams out of his or her eyes. Duh.
The Iranian people believed and continue to believe in
the Islamic Revolution. Just because it isn't as liberal and
westernized as most capitalist countries doesn't mean it's
not a democracy.

Anyway, I'm going to get back to watching television, its
all sunshine and kittens. And hey, write me back. I know
you're busy and all but they don't call you superhuman
for nothing you know, dude, you're supposed to multi-
task! There is a lot that has been left unsaid and you
probably have your own arguments (in which case, I think
you should be prepared to cry your eyes out because I
always win), and or probably want to build on something

checked, Iran wasn't exactly surrounded by abundantly
flowing rivers to generate hydroelectric power. “But what
about solar power? BP has been developing that
technology for quite some time now in Scandinavia,” they
say. Well, solar power can generate merely a fraction of
the electricity that nuclear energy is capable of
generating, and besides, nuclear power would also trim
down the air pollution that has taken over the Iranian
cities lately. Other sources of energy are not even worthy
of mention at this time. Ok, so call me a retard but I don't
see how Iran's sagacity is a threat to world peace.

L ife slips away second by second, yet most of us do
not realize the fact that every minute brings us a
step closer to Death. The Holy Quran reminds us of
this in several places.
“Every soul shall taste death; and to Us you shall be
brought back.” (29:57).
Everyone who appeared in this world was destined to
die, they all died and today we hardly come across the
traces of many of those people who passed away.
But despite the fact that we all know for sure that
everyone of us is going to die, most of us avoid thinking
about death. In the rapid flow of events, we usually
occupy ourselves in totally different things: what college
muscles will detach from their particular places. The skin
and other soft tissues will undergo complete
disintegration. The brain will decay until the whole body
is reduced to a skeleton.
On the other hand, what the dead man's soul will be
experiencing is far more horrible. The traditions that we
have received from the Holy Prophet and Imams very
clearly explain the different punishments of the grave.
The sermons of Imam Ali (as) which have been recorded
in Nahjul Balagha many times carry the same theme. He
says in one of them: “I advise you to remember death
and to lessen your heedlessness towards it. Why should
you be heedless of Him who is not heedless of you? Why

I was watching this dumb soap opera on television the
other day where this girl marries the man of her
dreams and unfortunately has to go through all sorts of
tribulation including the death of her husband and
numerous divorces. Allah must really like her because they
say that Allah loves to test his true believers through
trials. But then again, she seems to have an endless list of
potential husbands so I guess that makes up for her
misery, but that's not why I'm writing to you. As I was
flipping through the rest of the channels during the
commercial break (which makes up for like half of the
designated airtime), I came across all this crazy
commotion on BBC about how the United States was
accusing Iran of possessing or intending to manufacture
nuclear weapons under the pretense of generating
“peaceful” nuclear power for the Iranian people. I didn't
know what the heck was going on but I pretended to be
shell-shocked and murmured something like “I knew those
Iranians were crazy” since everyone else around me was
and I rushed to my computer to ask you (because you're
so awesome) on MSN what it meant but your status was
set to “out to lunch”. Again. But I know it's just a front
you've set up so you can fight crime and save the world,
and all those other superhuman things that you do,
without having to sign off. You brilliant superhero, you…
You want to know what disturbs me the most though? How
the US is waging this double standard war against
everyone. I read your paper on how the United States
foreign policy is consistently inconsistent, and since I
regard you in such high esteem right up there with the
likes of Naom Chomsky and I must agree
wholeheartedly. However, someone suggested to me that
maybe Iran's nuclear program went a long way back
actually what I think he was trying to tell me was
something along the lines of “I think I'm bleeding inside
my chest”, but whatever and this got me thinking. So I set
out on a journey of enlightenment and approached a
random, inveterate mishkaki consumer, who was
experiencing the incomprehensible nirvana that mishkaki
consumers regularly experience, and asked him to lend
me his valuable opinion on the matter since taxi drivers,
kiosk owners, and street food consumers usually have the
answers to all of life's political problems. He looked at
me and gave me this thought-provoking stare and said,
“No idea man, but dude, if you ever have a tough time
getting through level twenty-three on GTA 3 on your
Playstation 2, you know who to call”. And that, my friend,
is the reason why Tanzania is still a third world country.
So without too many other options left, I decided to hit
the books and to my surprise (you'll like this one) this is
to enroll in, which company to work for, what color of
clothing to wear the next morning, what supper to
cook........ etc.
This is so because we perceive life as a routine process
which started since we were born and will continue
interminably. Any attempt to talk about death is always
interrupted by those who do not feel comfortable hearing
about it. We all have formed a belief that death comes
only when one grows older and so it's not suitable for the
youths to discuss about it.
Yet it should be kept in mind that living for even one
further hour is never guaranteed. Everyday, man
witnesses the deaths of the people around him but still he
thinks little about the day he will witness his own. He
never supposes that such an end is awaiting him.
Nevertheless, when death comes to man, all the realities
of life vanish. No reminder of the “good old days”.
From the moment he breaths for the last time, he becomes
nothing but a heap of flesh. His silent and motionless
body is carried to the morgue where it is washed for the
last time. Wrapped in a shroud, the body is carried in a
coffin to the graveyard. Once the body is in the grave
and covered by soil that's the end of his story. From now
on he is simply one of the names represented in the
graveyard by a marble stone.

preachers. They were carried to their graves, not riding
themselves and were placed in them not on their own
accord. It seems as if they never lived in this world and as
if the next world had always been their abode. They

not care where they had to go. Now they cannot remove
themselves from evil, nor add to their virtues. They were
attached to the world and it deceived them. They trusted

In another sermon he says: “Know, O creatures of Allah,
that certainly, you and all the things treading on the lines
of those who were there before you. They were of longer
ages, had more populated houses and were of more
lasting traces. Their voices have become silent, their
movements have become stationery, their bodies have

reserves that are invaluable, yet finite, resources that
contribute significantly to the country's GDP most of it
being used internally. Whereas they could generate
nuclear power and export their oil creating a colossal
source of income for the development of Iran and its
people. Antagonists of Iran's nuclear program, however,
think otherwise, and have suggested that Iran yield to an
alternative source of energy. Let's assume for a second
that that is a viable option, and let's assume that I'm

The foundations for Iran's nuclear program were laid in the
1960 under auspices of the US within the framework of

no attachment with their homelands nor do they maintain
contact among themselves like neighbours- (despite the
fact that their graves are close by) and how can they
meet each other when decay has ground them to their
chest and the stones and earth have eaten them. It is as if
you too have gone where they have gone, the same
sleeping place has caught you and the same place has
detained you. What will be your position when your
affairs reach their end and the graves are turned (upside
down to throw the dead on the day of Judgement).”

Despite all these facts, man's mental processes are
inclined to disregard what he does not like or want. He is
even inclined to deny the existence of things he avoids
confronting. This tendency seems to be most apparent
when death is the issue. Only a funeral or sudden death
of an immediate family member brings this reality to his
mind. Almost everybody sees death far from himself.
Everybody thinks it is too early to die and that there are
always years to live ahead. Yet most people who died

B y definition, poverty is the state of being poor and
the lack of the means of providing material needs
or comforts. Hunger is the most extreme form of
poverty.
According to World Health Organization (WHO), one-
third of the world is well-fed, one-third is underfed and
one-third is starving.
Another survey shows that hunger and malnutrition claims
10 million lives every year (including 6 million children),
25,000 lives everyday and one life every 5 seconds!
Hunger and malnutrition are the number 1 risks to global
health, killing more than AIDS, malaria and TB.
Effects of Hunger
Hunger manifests itself in many ways other than
starvation and famine. Most poor people who battle
hunger deal with chronic undernourishment and vitamin or
mineral deficiencies, which result in stunted growth,
weakness and heightened susceptibility to illness.
Undernourishment can also hinder fetal development in
pregnant women and contribute to mental retardation.
Economically, the constant securing of food consumes
valuable time and energy of poor people, allowing less
time for work and earning income.
Socially, the lack of food erodes relationships and feeds
shame so that those most in need of support are often

Similarly we think the same way it's too early to die
because there are so many things to accomplish. However,
this is just avoidance of death and a vain endeavor to
escape it. And Allah (S.W.T) has mentioned it in the
Quran : “ Running away will not profit you if you are
running away from death or martyrdom in Allah's way,
(and even if you escape by running away from the
battlefield) no more than a brief respite will be granted
to you.” (33:16).
Man is created alone and should be aware that he will
also die alone. Even if, during his life he was addicted to
his possessions, he will not be allowed to take his goods,
wealth, property, cars , clothes and precious items with
him to the grave. He will sooner or later end up wrapped
in a shroud made up of the cheapest fabrics. The body
comes alone into the world and departs the same way.
The only asset one can take with him is his E'man (belief)
and good actions.

Hazrat Ayatullah Hajj Sayyid Ali Husayni Khamene'i
A yatullah Khamene'i was born in 1929 to a
religious family in the holy city of Mashhad. His
father Ayatullah Agha Sayyid Jawad was an
eminent mujtahid and a well-known clergy in Mashhad,
and his grandfather Ayatullah Sayyid Husayn Khamene'i
was a famous clergy from Azerbaijan who dwelt in Najaf
Ashraf.
After the year 1955, Ayatullah Khamene'i began his
revolutionary struggle against the Pahlawi regime and
continued that until the victory of the Islamic revolutionary
of Iran. Ayatullah Khamene'i had been exiled and
imprisoned for many accusations.
After the Islamic revolution, the beloved leader occupied
many positions, some of which are the member of the
revolutionary assembly, the representative of the
revolutionary assembly in the ministry of defence and
acted minister of the same ministry, the Imam - e - Jum`ah
of Tehran, the representative of Tehran, and a president
for two sessions. After the demise of the great leader
Imam Khomeyni, he was elected the country's leader by
the sage and wise decision of the assembly of experts.
Ayatullah al-Uzma Husaini Shahroudi
A yatollah Shahroudi was born in Najaf in 1925. He
was taught the preliminary lessons of the seminary
studies by his father, the late Shaykh Ali Al-
Shahrbabaki. He also studied some of his preliminary
lessons under the late Shaykh Shams Al-Zanjaani. He
learned seminary textbooks such as Al-Rasaa'il and Al-
Makaasib from his father, and the book Kifaayat (Usool)
The supreme irony of life is that hardly anyone gets out of it alive
from the late Ayatollah Uzma Agha Mirza Haashim
Aamuli and the late Ayatullah Shaykh Abdul Husayn
Rashti.
In 1941, at the age of sixteen, he began attending
advance level seminary studies. In those studies he
benefited from Ayatullah Uzma Hajj Sayyid Mahmoud
Shahroudi and his father. Since 1963, he has been
delivering lectures in the Islamic Seminary of Qom.
Ayatullah Jannati
S haykh Jannaati was born in Tash, a city in
Shaahroud, in 1932. He began to learn the Holy
Qur'an and Persian literature when he was only six
years old. At the age of eleven, he entered the Islamic
Seminary of Shaahroud, where he finished his studies at
the highest levels of Fiqh (jurisprudence) and Usool
(principles) offered by the seminary.
He left his hometown for Mashhad when he was 18 in
order to continue his studies. In Mashad, he attended the
lectures of Ayatollah Milaani. After that, he returned to
Qom and attended the lectures of Ayatollah Boroujerdi and
Imam Khumayni.
Al-Jannaati has written more than (350) articles on subjects
like Fiqh, Usool, Qur'anic sciences, Tafseer and Hadith
(tradition). Many of his articles have been published in
various magazines inside and outside of Iran. He also
delivered many lectures and attends many international
conferences, and educational/cultural congresses.
His Eminence Ayatullah Uzma Jawad Tabrizi
A yatollah Jawad Tabrizi was born in 1926 in
Tabriz. After finishing secular school and reaching
to the ripe age of eighteen, he entered a
theological school in his hometown. Within four years of

entering the theological school, he completed the
preliminary and intermediate levels of his seminary
studies. In the year 1948, he migrated to Qom and
finished other lessons at the intermediate level. In Qom he
reached to the Kharij level; thereupon he attended the
lectures of the late Ayatollah Hujjat, and Ayatollah
Boroujerdi. Aside from studying he also taught the
intermediate to advanced courses of Islamic studies in
Qom.
Tabrizi then migrated to Najaf and was fortunate enough
to benefit from eminent scholars such as the late
Ayatollah Sayyid Abul Hadi Shirazi and the late
Ayatollah al-Khou'i until he got the degree of Ijtihad.
Tabrizi was invited by al-Khou'i to join the Assembly of
consultants, which is an organized group of scholars that
responds to the people's questions.
Ayatullah Jawad stayed in Najaf for about twenty-three
years, leaving only in the holidays to do propagation in
different countries. He later returned to Iran and began
teaching Fiqh (jurisprudence) and Usool (principles) in the
Islamic seminary of Qom, where he currently is till this

message of Islam, she would nurse him when he was
badly wounded by the pagans, and thus he named her,
Umme Abiha (mother of her father). As a wife, she was
married to Imam Ali (A.S), and their pair was the best
of pairs and still continues to be a shining example to
the world at present. She aided her husband in his
worldly and religious affairs, and co operated with
him in achieving his exalted goals. This harmony in their
life was perfected by the ideological tranquility they
both enjoyed, and the respect and glorification they
held for each other.
Imam Muhammed al Baqir (A.S) has said, “Fatima (AS)
vowed to take care of the household work, make
dough, bake bread, and clean the house; in return, Ali
(AS) vowed to take care of the outside work (such as)
gathering firewood, and bringing food.' As a mother,
she raised four great children, all of them having
contributed tremendously towards Islam, under the
guidance of her father and husband, she produced
excellent examples of character and submission to the
Almighty, her first born, Imam Hassan (A.S) made a
peace treaty with Muawiyya to end the oppression on
his father, Imam Hussein (AS) gave up his life and the
lives of his family and companions in order to save
Islam and spread its message throughout the world, her
daughters Bibi Zainab (SA) and Umme Kulthum (SA)

Preventable. Yet again, poverty interferes in parents'
ability to access immunizations and medicines. Chronic
undernourishment on top of insufficient income greatly
increases a child's risk of death.
Causes of Hunger
One might say that famine and wars cause most of the
hunger-related deaths as those events are usually given
the most publicity and media coverage. But the fact is
that only ten percent of hunger deaths results from
famines and wars. The stark truth is that the vast majority
of hunger deaths are not in the news we see and hear.
Most people starve to death due to chronic malnutrition.
According to Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO), the
world produces enough food for everyone, but over 800
million people remain chronically hungry.
Also in Sura Haqqah (Chapter 69), Verses 33-37: “Surely
he did not believe in Allah, the Great, Nor did he urge
the feeding of the poor. Therefore he has not here today
a true friend, Nor any food except refuse, Which none
but the wrong-doers eat.”

A few sayings of our infallible leaders
Ø
The Holy Prophet (saw) has said, “Ask questions to the
learned, speak with the wise and associate with the
poor”

On the night of Ascent (Me'raj), Allah told the
Prophet, “O Ahmad! My love is the loving of the poor.
Bring the poor nearer to yourself and situate them
close to yourself in order that I approach you.”
Ø
Imam Ali (as) has said, “Charity is an effective cure,
and the actions of the people in their present life will
be before their eyes in the next life.”
Ø
Imam Mohammed Baqir (as) has said, “Is it enough
for a Shia by professing love for Ahlul Bayt? No! Our
followers are not recognized but by attending to the
poor, needy, debtors and orphans who live near
them”.
Ø
Imam Jaffer Sadiq (as) has said, “From the most
beloved deeds with Allah, Almighty and Glorious, is
bringing happiness to a Muslim believer such as
satiating his hunger, removing his grief, or paying his
debt.”
The duty to feed and help the poor and needy falls on
every Muslim, especially those who are financially able
as per the saying of Imam Ali (as), “Allah, the Glorified
has fixed the livelihood of the destitute in the wealth of
the rich. Consequently, whenever a destitute remains
hungry, it is because some rich person has denied (him his
share).”
Islam does not want its followers to remain and it is the
duty of those who financially able to help those who are
not. There are many ways in which this can be done, some
of which are:

You know me not for what's inside,
You judge the clothing I wear with pride,
My body is not for your eyes to hold,
You must talk to my eyes, not my
feminine mold,I am an

cloak, so you won't be bothered

It was given to me many years ago,

For God himself gave us LIB ER TY
When he sent Islam,
To you and me!
So women they ask you how do you feel
about the hood, just sum it up by saying

Women In Islam

A llah says in the holy Quran in Surah an Nur, ayat 30
and 31: “Say thou(O our apostle Muhammed) Unto the
believing men that they cast down their gaze and guard
their private parts that is purer for them; verily God is all
aware of what (all) you do.” “And say unto the believing
women that they cast down their gaze and guard their
private parts and they display not their adornment save
what is apparent of it; and to draw their veils over their
bosoms, and they display not their adornment save to
their husbands or their fathers, or the fathers of their
husbands, or their sons, or the sons of their husbands or
their brothers, or their brothers sons, or their sisters sons,
or their women, or those who their right hands possess, or
the male servants void of sexual stimulant, or the children
who have not yet attained the carnal knowledge of
women's nakedness, and let them not strike their feet (in
walking) that what they hide of their adornment gets
apparent; and turn you (repentant) unto God all of you,
O' you believers! That you may be successful”
Islam is a religion of equality and freedom; it has
provided everyone with equal rights and makes sure that
they are provided to them. Allah (SWT) created both men
and women so that they may live together, in cooperation
and harmony and that they may provide for and raise
their off springs in an appropriate environment and grant
them with knowledge, faith and guidance.
However, all this is achieved when the men respect the
women and the women respect the men, and all of them
live together in harmony and in mutual understanding,
In giving advice, seek to help, not please, your friend
creating a framework of love, respect, peace and co
operation, and all this is stressed by Islam and taught by
the Holy Prophet (SAWW) and the twelve Aimmah (AS).
As Islam continued to spread across the world, it
encountered different cultures and different religions with
their own ethics and beliefs, thus they started to integrate
with the religion of Islam, making part of their culture a
part of Islam. One such integration was their belief in
discrimination of women whereby the men are believed
to be superior to women which is contrary to what Islam
says. An example is Hinduism and they believe that
women are not independent and her husband is
regarded as her lord, and whatever vices and illicit
actions that he does, does not refute this fact as he is
always her lord. It also says that women have an
untamable temper, are naturally heartless, are disloyal to
their husbands however carefully they may be guarded in
this world. They regard women as seducers of men and
make even learned men victims of anger and desire.
However, the position of honor, dignity and the right
given to a woman in Islam is unique. No other religion in
the world has ever given her. In Islam, women are
allowed inheritance and individual independent
ownership. Allah has said in Surah an Nisa, ayat no 4,
“Give away women their dowry freely but if, they of
themselves remit unto you anything thereof, then consume
it with pleasure, wholesome.” They are allowed to choose
their spouses and cannot be married off without their
consent, they are required to observe hijab, which

protects them from exploitation by men. Prophet
Muhammed (S.A.W.W) has said, “The best of your men is
Ali ibn Abu Talib and the best of your women is Fatema
binte Mohammed.” This is because Bibi Fatema (A.S)
observed the best hijab and is a role model for the
Muslim ummah.
Women have been assigned certain duties in Islam. Her
first and foremost duty is towards Allah (S.W.T). It is her
duty to believe and have faith in her creator, Allah
(S.W.T), she must believe in the basic fundamental
principles of Islam (Usule deen and furu e deen). Her
submission is solely to her creator and none other apart
from Him. Her faith in Allah is the key to all her other
duties because her faith in Allah will make her aware of
her other duties and responsibilities, which are, as a
daughter, a wife, a mother and finally a role model to
her society.
Her duties as a daughter, wife and mother are most
perfectly observed in the character of Bibi Fatema Zahra
(A.S), who is the ideal role model. As a daughter, she
never gave the prophet a chance of complaining against
any of her actions. At a very young age, tragedy clouded
her life as she lost her mother and after that she was fully
in charge of the well being of the holy Prophet

Educating our youth's today
A LITTLE CIVILITY CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE
E
DUCATING our youth's has now become a top
priority since due to the external influence we see
in them an erosion of morals sadly.
Our youths are fast losing the needed citizen's
responsibility to know what constitutes moral behaviour
and what is to be rejected as mere consciousness. Hence,
special efforts is required to be put in to help the youths
to come out with a proper perspective of moral evil and
of good, when they become responsible for the future of
the community and be good citizens.
The fact is that I am writing this not because I like to, but
for other reasons among them the youths with no regard
for rules and regulations is in itself un Islamic and will
further create moral decay in our community and the
future may not look good for them to aspire into
community leadership.
Here is one we have all experienced. Let me give an
example. Recently I visited our graveyard in Dar es
salaam and was shocked to see that a group of our
youths engaged in casual talks and silly behavior just
near a grave and more so they were sitting on the edge
of the “kabr” while someone was reciting verses from
the Holy Quran. Islam certainly condemns such behavior
but like so many other things, it is not an aspect of our
religion that receives much emphasis here. What would a
visitor to the graveyard make of such inconsiderate
behavior? What would a good Muslim think of it? Are the
youths so ignorant that the respect for the dead and the
grave is being forgotten?
Many a times at a Wudhoo corner in a Mosque some
youth comes barging and without any excuse grabs the
tap. You may well feel like asking him to stand in line. But
may be afraid that of his insulting behavior. It may be
pronounced with an arrogance that makes your blood
boil. Never mind, why can't he wait for his turn? What
makes him think he is more important than those who were
waiting before he arrived? What would a visitor to our
Mosque make of such inconsiderate behavior? What
would a good Muslim think of it?
You are in the Mosque patiently reciting the Duas.
Suddenly some youths behind you, are casually involved
in a conversation or fidgeting with a mobile phone
causing a nuisance. What's the matter with them? Don't
they see you are reciting a Dua? Is this not Allah's House?
A goal without a plan is just a wish
Why would anyone behave so thoughtlessly? Any
disapproving look by you will be met with a how-dare-
you glare! And this in a mosque! I will not even bother to
ask my usual questions.
What about this? A session of Dua e Kumail is in progress
the youths will just walk away and while away, they
would waste their time endlessly outside. You just wonder
if their parents know of their behaviour?.. Don't they care
about the hereafter? Do they not understand the meaning
of this powerful Dua? Where are the volunteers to calm
them down? Even more so pity them, they are losing their
precious time in unnecessary endless talks. What indeed
would our Holy Imam - e - Zamana (A.S.) think of such a
thoughtless and inconsiderate act? Do our youths care?
The youths go on to become doctors, scientists, engineers,
technicians, economists, but in my opinion not moral
youths. It looks as though they forget that our
responsibility starts from our youth. The youth has to
inculcate civic and moral responsibility to be courteous to
elders and Muslims in general.
Fortunately for us, the spirit of our renewal is not wholly
dead; As Muslims we are instructed to be kind and
caring. No religion has focused as much on personal
behavior as Islam. And no person's life has been a
greater light of inspiration and model as is the life of our
Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.W.) and his pure progeny.
We should take our examples from them so that we can
help to create ourselves into a model for Islam and also
for the future generation.
All the situations that I have mentioned may sound too
trivial to some but is all too common to be sidelined in my
opinion.
As a youth just think that courtesy and respectful behaviour
will not only gain you respect but to your parents as well
and what more gift you want to offer them than respect
from others.

Evil Consequences of Adultery

he environment in which our youths are exposed to
is that of indecency/nudity and sensuality. As a
result, I wish to present a couple of points which
should act as an eye- opener as regards the evils of
adultery.
- We, today are in the custody and security of our
fathers. We feel proud because we have our fathers who
give us love, shelter and protection. We rely on them and
they teach us. There is a lineage between us and our
fathers.
Bring your imagination to a society practicing adultery
rampantly and offsprings are born outside of wedlock.
Who is their caretaker, their father? The children are
born without any legal channels possessing no element of

murder, loot etc. Statistics prove this happening in places
where adultery is being practiced.
Just to satisfy one's lust, one practices adultery which also
accompanies other evils.
- Adultery also leads to the spread of such as venereal
diseases, sexually transmitted diseases (STD'S) such as
gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV/AIDS.There was a Muslim youth
living in the middle east. He was rich and unfortunately fell
into bad friendship. His friend gave him an address and told
the youth to go to that place and get the charms. Therefore,
he leaves for Europe and calls, there he gets a girl with
intoxicants and they have an illicit relationship. The boy
sleeps and the girl is gone. He wakes up and finds a
message, “Welcome to the AIDS zone of London, AIDS is in
your body, I got AIDS from a person like you and I have
given it to you as an act of revenge.”
His parents and one of his friends visit him. As he is dying, he
addresses to his friend, “Give this message to the friend who
gave me the address, why didn't he warn me of the dangers
and evils?”
- Adultery leads to the abortion of the fetus. Abortion is
a sin, a crime and it takes place because of adultery.
They kill an innocent life conceived in the mother's womb
as they think it to be an obstacle released after nine
months and so they abort it.
- An adulterer loses his identity. I would like to support
this with the help of a hadith. Our sixth Imam (A.S) has
said, “One who engages himself in this deed, loses his
identity by six things.

satisfaction of sexual desires is involved while in marriage,
there is an issue of love, compassion and rest. Suratul Room,
(30 : 21), “Allah created mates for you from amongst you so
that you may have rest in your wife and the kept peace,
compassion between you.
- Inheritance is lost upon a death of a parent. Children
inherit property and possessions but with adultery,
inheritance is thrown of the board.
There are no parents as it was just to satisfy lust. Therefore
the by product of adultery (illegitimate child) have no
inheritance (wirathat) and the laws get eliminated.
These are some of the calamities which could engulf an
individual, family and a society if it places its feet in this
social vice.

the areas in which you intend to become stronger in order
to achieve your goals.
Here, your goal is to identify your strengths so that you
can deploy yourself in such a way as to increase your
personal return on energy. One of the best mental
techniques that you can use to accomplish this is to see
yourself as a “bundle of resources” that can be applied
in a variety of directions to achieve a variety of
objectives. As a bundle of resources, the amount of time
and energy that you have is limited; therefore, your time
and energy must be put to their highest and best use.
Imagine that you're looking at yourself through the eyes
of another person, and you're thinking about how you
could apply yourself to bring about the best results. See
yourself as your own employer or boss. What could you
do to maximize the output of which you're capable, and
where could you do it?
The next step is to do what is called a “situational
analysis.” Sometimes it is called “performance audit.” This
is the process of analyzing yourself thoroughly before
you begin setting specific goals and planning certain
activities. You begin your performance audit by asking
yourself some key questions.

As a result of your genetic structure, your education, your
experiences, your background, your interests and
proclivities, you're a unique and rare combination of
talents and abilities. You can be extremely good at
something. You're responsible for finding out what that
something is and then throwing your whole heart into it,
without reservation or holdback. Only when you discover
what you really enjoy doing and then commit yourself to
it wholeheartedly you begin to feel really alive and fully
engaged in life. Let your imagination flow freely for a

Patience v/s Desperation - The Story of our lives

A lot has been said and written about the state of
our community youths. It has come to a point when
you read something like this and wonder whether
it is a duplication of something you have read previously.
Yet, there seems to be little signs of improvement, if any.
Considering who should take responsibility for the state,
many names come up…The Jamaat, parents,
teachers…..! However, the bottom line is clear; every one
is responsible for his/her own actions.
As youths, we are all in a state where we can think
rationally and make decisions on our own. However, if a
mistake is committed, we always find someone to blame
so that it can come off our shoulders. Little do we know
that no excuse will be accepted on the actual day of
judgment.
In order to counter this situation, we need to dig deep
within ourselves and realize the two personalities within us
that are always at loggerheads. These personalities are
that of Patience and Desperation (in technical terms:
Nafse Lawwama and Nafse Ammara).
The personality of Desperation is the one that always
entices us to go for good and pleasurable things. It
always attracts us towards the worldly pleasures that are
ecstatic, yet very short lived.
On the other hand, the personality of patience steadies
our nerves and helps us to control the personality of
Desperation. It helps us to filter out whatever the
Desperation personality tells on the basis of right and
wrong. Although all pleasurable things may not be wrong,
they may not be right either. Allah (SWT) has purposely
put the personality of Desperation within us so that we
enjoy his creations and make use of it in achieving
nearness to Allah. However, if not controlled, the same
personality can lead us further into pleasures that are
forbidden. That is where the patience personality comes
in.
The story of our lives is based on the fight between these
two personalities. Looking at the situation of our youths, it

youths of today spend a huge percentage of their time
pursuing pleasures that are forbidden ; including sex,

The outcome is the effect on our bodies, minds and
personalities. These pleasures lead us to bodily harm that
is followed by negative impact on our minds and finally
the change of our personalities towards the wrong.
Why do you think there are so many youths who are
inclining towards the dangerous concept of wahabism?
There is only one logical explanation….The youths do not
find the required pleasure in Shia policies and so want to
change to something far more easier and less taxing. This
comes up because the body is already a slave to the
pleasures and the effect is coming on to the mind. If not
controlled, this disease will then cover up the personalities
and we will see a very different community in a few
years time.
How do we stop this? Only one solution….entice the
youths to wake up and take control of their lives before
their life loses control. This can be done by different
people at different times. Every one will have a role to
play:
Youths themselves: Deep pondering and avoiding going
to sites that confuse the minds will make us clear our
heads and gain control over our Desperate personality.

Discover Yourself Within Yourself

B enjamin Franklin once wrote, “Do you value life?
Then waste no time, for that is the stuff of which life
is made”. The value of anything that you obtain or
accomplish can be determined by how much of your time,
or your life, that you spent to acquire it. The amount of
yourself that you use up in achieving the goals that are
important to you is a critical factor to consider, even
before you begin. Only by discovering your innate
strengths and developing and exploiting them to their
highest degree can you utilize yourself to get the
greatest amount of satisfaction and enjoyment from
everything you do. Deciding what you want to do, what
you can do well, and what can give you the highest
rewards for your efforts is the starting point in getting the
best out of yourself.
The first thing you want to think about is increasing your
personal “return on energy,” rather than return on equity.
You need to realize that the most essential and valuable
thing that you have to bring to your life and to your work
is your ability to think, to act and to get results. Your
earning ability-which is a function of your education,
knowledge, experience and talents-is your human capital,
or your equity. And the way you use it will largely
determine the quality and quantity of your rewards, both
material and psychological, both tangible and intangible.
Here's a story of a plumber working in a huge contracting
firm. The salary that he received was less than the people
in the sales department though he worked harder
compared to them. Because of this, he very much
disappointed. He then thought of getting into the sales
department but it was up to him to learn how to sell and
then to do everything possible to get his management to
give him a chance at selling plumbing services. His future

and higher-paying job. He had told his management that
he wanted to get into sales. The managers had
discouraged him, telling him that plumbers had very little
aptitude for the hard, interpersonal work involved in

To make a long story short, they helped him to learn how
to sell their company's services by having him study
manuals and take extra courses on his own time. He
bought books and listened to tapes and began spending
time talking to the salespeople in the organization. Now
a year had passed. He had been a full-fledged salesman
for about five months. He was already earning more than
twice as much as the most he had ever earned as a
plumber. But most of all, he was happier. He was more
excited and more enthusiastic about himself and his work
than he had ever been. He loved the field of selling, and
he considered his career change to be one of the best
decisions he had ever made.
In this case, the individual discovered and developed his
strengths and subsequently, improved the quality of his
life. In brief he planned strategically each step he took.
And you can do the same. In fact, this may be one of the

This first part of personal strategic planning is called
“values clarification.” You ask yourself, “What values and
virtues do I most admire and wish to practice in my life?”
If you wanted to discover your strengths in the work
world, first you would define your values as they apply to
employment. The values that companies settle upon would
be similar to the values that you organize your work life
around. Often, both companies and individuals will
choose values such as integrity, quality, respect for others,
service, profitability, innovation, entrepreneurship, market
leadership, and so on.
You could use those values to define your position with
regard to your work. You could decide to plan your work
life around the values of quality, excellence, service,
profitability, and innovation. There are dozens of values
that you can pick from, but whichever you choose, and the
order of priority you place on your choices, will
determine your approach to your work.
Your next step is to create your personal mission
statement. This is a clear, written description of the person
you intend to be in your work life. This is even more
important than setting specific financial or business or
sales goals. Once you have decided how much you want
to earn, you need to write out a mission statement that
describes the kind of person you intend to become in
order to earn that amount of money.
For example, you might say, “I'm an outstanding
salesperson, well-organized, hardworking, thoroughly
prepared, positive, enthusiastic, and intensely focused on

Canoeing Safaris - Launched In Arusha National Park

lakes located in the Arusha National Park (ANAOA),
canoeing safari is yet another tourist attraction to be
added to the already famous Tanzanian tourism industry.

Known by its other name; kayaking, canoeing provides a
breathtaking and an exhilarating adventure which
involves paddling a canoe or kayak. It can usually be

Canoeing safari takes place on one of the Momela lakes
also known as 'small' Momella. This is the second new
tourist attraction to be introduced on the park recently.
Another one to officially start next January is a walking
safari around the world famous Ngurudoto crater.
The main idea which prompted the introduction of this
new tourist attraction is to make visitors be able to have
chances to observe everything in the natural world and
view different animals in their various habitats under one
roof. The canoeing safari enables visitors to have a closer
and natural look at hippos and bird life not easily seen
on ordinary game safaris.
TANZANIA NATIONAL PARKS in conjunction with tour
operators and other tourism stakeholders are at the
moment promoting the two new products which will add
value to the country's extensive attractions.
Lying between the peaks of Kilimanjaro and Meru,
Arusha National Park is an outstandingly beautiful area
with wide range of habitats, form a string of crater lakes
where many water birds can be watched through the
highland mountain forest to the imposing summit of Mount
Meru.
Parents: Strict monitoring of our youths, including their
actions and their thinking. Constant healthy discussions
with them about community, religion and ethics will allow
the youth to feel he is not alone and will encourage the

Rubondo Island National Park

L ife in Rubondo Island is like a pair of fish eagles

guards the gentle bay, their distinctive black white
and chestnut feather pattern gleaming boldly in the
morning sun. Suddenly, the birds toss back their heads in
a piercing, evocative duet. On the sandbank below, a
fleet yet silent through a maze of tamarinds, wild palms,
and sycamore figs strung with a cage of trailing taproots.
Rubondo Island National Park is a break from the rigours
of the safari circuit and a relaxing place from which to
explore Lake Victoria.
well-fed monster of a crocodile snaps to life, startled
from its nap. It stampedes through the crunchy
undergrowth, crashing into the water in front of the boat,
invisible except for a pair of sentry-post eyes that peek
menacingly above the surface to monitor the movements.

Rubondo Island is tucked in the southwest corner of Lake

Victoria, the world's second-largest lake, northwest of
Mwanza, an inland sea sprawling between Tanzania,
Uganda and Kenya. The park provides a variety of
habitats ranging from savannah to open woodland, dense
forest, papyrus swamps and sandy beaches. Ninety
percent of the park is humid forest; the remainder ranges
from open grassland to lakeside papyrus beds.

and nine smaller islands under its wing. The park boasts a
rich and diverse variety of butterflies and bird life that
are easily viewable from the lake shore. Rubondo also
protects precious fish breeding grounds. The bird-life is
unique with birds from east, central and southern Africa
flocking to “Bird Island” to breed. Bee-eaters, ibis,
kingfisher and saddle-billed stork will be seen while
tilapia and Nile perch abound in the lake. The rare
Sitatunga, an extremely endangered amphibious Flocks of African grey parrots released onto the island
antelope, can sometimes be viewed escaping charging after they were confiscated from illegal exporters screech

paradise flycatcher as it flits through the lakeshore forest.
Herons, storks and spoonbills proliferate in the swampy lake

during the northern winter. Wild jasmine, 40 different
orchids and a smorgasbord of sweet, indefinable smells
emanate from the forest.
A number of indigenous mammal species - hippo, vervet
monkey, genet and mongoose - share their protected
habitat with introduced species such as chimpanzee, black-
and-white colobus, elephant and giraffe, all of which
benefit from Rubondo's inaccessibility.
The best time to visit Rubondo island national park is in the
dry season from June to August, wet season from November
to March, the season of wildflowers and butterflies or in the
month of December to February the best for migratory
birds. The park offers tourist for walking safaris, boat
excursions, sport fishing, chimpanzee treks and plans for
canoe trips.

Typically, a person with an overactive thyroid

(hyperthyroidism) presents with irritability (or
nervousness), confusion, palpitations (fast heart beat),
frequent bowel movements or diarrhea and a high blood
pressure. Also seen are bulging eyes or a continuous
stare , sleep difficulties(insomnia) , weakness, increased
sensitivity to light n sound, heat intolerance, moist sweaty
skin, shakiness and tremor. Usually appetite is increased
but weight stays the same or decreases.
On the other hand, a person with a lazy thyroid
(hypothyroidism) is seen with excess weight, slow heart
beat, hoarse voice, puffy face, drooping eyelids, loss of
eyebrows, intolerance to cold and constipation. Such
people usually are confused, forgetful and even appear
depressed. The skin and hair are usually dry. Children
may typically be slow learners and perform poorly in
academics and sports.
The symptoms listed above are very variable and there is
considerable overlap between hyper- and hypo-
thyroidism. Some patients may only have two or three of
the symptoms while old people may present with
apathetic or masked hyperthyroidism; in which case they
simply become weak, sleepy, confused, and depressed.
Heart problems due to hyperthyroidism are also more
common in the elderly.
Aha! That's why I was feeling this way all along and

your GP (family doctor). It always helps to list your

TSH.
Usually, in hyperthyroidism, T3 and T4 are high, while
TSH is low. In hypothyroidism; T3 and T4 are low while

discussed above). However, test results can be misleading.
Some may appear normal, while you are clinically
suffering from thyroid disease. Others may appear
abnormal, while your thyroid is ok. The main thing is to
get an understanding doctor, who if he feels the need to,
will refer you to a physician (a person specialized in
internal medicine). Don't let anyone tell you that you are
making things up!

T he previous article focused on self employment, and
some of the advantages of owning a business. This
article will provide an overview of investment
opportunities and some of the critical elements that need
to be considered.
Background:
Investment in real sense means to venture into a business
for the purpose of earning a profit. It should be noted
however, that although one can invest in any business, all
businesses are not guaranteed to earn profit and
likewise, all investments too are not guaranteed to earn a
profit. However it is presumed that investment in any field
is to yield a return or earn profit and this should be an
encouragement that investment may be a means of
earning profit.
For any investment, there are pros and cons, and
therefore, investment decisions must be based on a
thoughtful process. This means that you must protect your
hard earned money and naturally it is not meant for
waste. It is somewhat of a risk that one has to take,
although the rationale for how, when and where to invest
can be appropriately calculated based on acceptable
risk.
When we want to invest in any business be it a
Commercial Enterprise, Industry, Agriculture, Mining,
Fishery, Poultry, Estate, Tourism, Hotel, Guest Houses, Stock
Market, Fixed Deposit, etc, we must be vigilant and
appropriately study the business to try and speculate the
advantages, disadvantages, marketability, manpower,
etc. The study will reveal in matters of assumption,
guesswork, supposition, thought, hearsay, risk etc. The
study will provide us information about its benefits,
advantages, disadvantages, and the risks associated with
investing in that business. The basic ground work in finding
out more about the company/business is merely a
speculation and it does not guarantee to provide all the
information, it is important to encourage and appraise
the investors as to how he will fare and to give him the
idea of the entire set up for the purpose of plenishing his
money into gainful earning.

market. Marketing too is very important which must be
supported by professional staff under corporate system
of management. This shall be a team work and it is very
important rather than a one man show. In Tanzania today
the trade is liberalized and therefore investing in trade is
an investment in right perspective.
Investment in other areas such as Industry, Agriculture, and
Mining etc requires a lot of money and many risks are
involved such as electricity problem, water, labour
problem etc. These are the factors which hamper
production and can be a loss entity if one is not careful in
his decision. Then high tariff of utilities is also another
disadvantage. Marketing of industrial goods will continue
to be a problem unless the Government bans foreign
import in order to protect local industries. The good
economy is the one whereby people are able to buy
locally manufactured goods. However, the door is always
open for a serious investor to consider any good industry
such as the manufacture of spectacle frames etc. After
all, industries must not be giant and a start up for a small
scale industry must be considered as well.
Investment in Stock Market is profitable in countries where

Tanzania the stock market is too small and all companies

less, we buy more but enjoy less.

conveniences but less time; we have more degrees
(qualifications) but less sense; more knowledge but less
wisdom & judgement; more experts but more problems;
more medicines but less cures.
We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our
values. We talk too much, love little & hate more seldom.
We have learnt how to make living but not a life; we
have added years to life but not life to years.
The best measure of a man's honesty isn't his income tax return. It's the

Exports of canned products, horticulture fruits and locally
manufactured goods can be considered since market is
available in Middle Eastern Countries. A survey must be
done or a group formed to undertake the research and
thereafter connect our people to grab export market. At
this time many are concentrating on imported goods and

forward.
In conclusion, it should be noted that investing in any
venture must be thoroughly studied prior to making any
decisions about whether you would want to invest. Neither
one will advise the other in what area he should go. The
interested investor should conceive the idea as to what

his budget and the level of risk he is willing to take.

the best teacher. Advice from experienced businessmen
will help. This will help the investor to have a clear picture
and will then be able to decide whether or not to go into

outbreak, avoid any contact with chickens, ducks, geese,
pigeons, turkeys, quail, or any wild birds. Stay away from
live bird markets, local poultry farms, or any other
settings where there might be infected poultry. Avoid
touching surfaces that could have been contaminated by
bird saliva, feces, or urine.
What Are the Symptoms of Bird Flu in Humans?
The symptoms of bird flu in people tend to be similar to
the typical flu: fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches. But
this flu can also lead to eye infections, pneumonia, and
severe coughing and breathing problems.

Many a times we come across people in our homes,
schools or work-places with odd behavior or children with
deficient capabilities. Most of the time we end up
labeling them as difficult or nerds and dunces. Think
again! In the first conversation, the hypersensitive mother
is actually suffering from a metabolic disorder most
probably hyperthyroidism. The second scenario is that of
an overweight child with learning difficulties again
possibly due to a thyroid disorder tough this time

The thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland located just
below the Adam's apple. It has one major function to
produce thyroid hormones (called T3 and T4) which are
the key regulators of cellular activity all over the body.

humans. These medications can't cure bird flu, but they
can make the symptoms less severe. Flu viruses can
become resistant to medications, so they may not always
work. That's why experts constantly study and test
medications to determine their effectiveness and develop
better ones.

Bird flu

What Is Bird Flu?
Avian flu is caused by a form of influenza virus that
usually only infects birds and sometimes infects pigs. The
few people who have become sick or died from the bird
flu had direct contact with infected birds. Like the flu that
affects humans, there are lots of different strains
(varieties) of bird flu. Some of those strains only cause
mild symptoms in birds, such as reduced egg production.
Other strains are more dangerous to birds - they spread
quickly, cause more severe symptoms, and are almost
always fatal to the birds.
The strain of the bird flu that has infected people in Asia
recently is called H5N1. H5N1 is one of the strains that
are dangerous to birds. The people who became infected
with the H5N1 strain of avian flu caught it directly from
birds. H5N1 cannot be spread from person to person.
Why Are People So Worried About It?
Experts are concerned that the H5N1 strain of bird flu
could mutate (change) into a new form that can spread
from person to person. This has happened in past flu
outbreaks and has caused what is known as a pandemic.
A pandemic is a global outbreak of flu that causes
serious illness in people and spreads quickly throughout
populations. Vaccines can help keep a virus infection from
spreading and causing a pandemic. Although there is no
vaccine for the H5N1 flu virus right now, scientists are
working on one.
What Are We Doing About It?
The good news is that we have more information and
resources available today than we did when the last flu
pandemic occurred more than 30 years ago. Health
officials around the world are working together to try to
make sure that bird flu doesn't spread - and to keep
people safe if it does. Experts believe only about 120
people have contracted the disease since it was identified
as a threat eight years ago.
In an effort to keep bird flu from spreading, authorities in
countries that have experienced outbreaks have
destroyed more than 150 million birds. Three countries
(Japan, Korea and Malaysia) have controlled their
outbreaks of the H5N1 strain and officials report there is
no more viruses in these nations. Countries that have not
had any outbreaks have stopped importing poultry from
countries that have had avian flu outbreaks. Meanwhile,
scientists are working on a vaccine to keep people from
getting the avian flu.
The World Health Organization (WHO) is closely
monitoring the countries where there have been outbreaks
to see if the virus spreads or mutates in a way that makes
it more threatening to people. The organization has
created an emergency plan to handle a pandemic,
including stockpiling anti-viral medications to help
people if they do become infected. Although anti-viral
medicines don't cure the infection, they can make an

How Does Bird Flu Spread?
Migrating birds, like ducks and geese, can carry and
spread the virus to other birds - often across country
borders. These migratory birds don't seem to get sick
from bird flu, but domesticated birds like chickens and
turkeys can die from it. A bird can get bird flu from
another bird by coming into close contact with its infected
feces (poop), secretions, or saliva. Birds can also get sick
if they come into contact with dirt, cages, or any surfaces
that have been contaminated by sick birds. That's why
researchers think live bird markets, where birds are kept
in close quarters, are places where the virus has spread
quickly. The virus can also spread from farm to farm if
birds' infected feces and saliva get on farming
equipment, like tractor wheels, clothing, and cages.
It's unlikely that a person who gets infected with the
H5N1 strain of the avian flu will spread it to other
people. All the human cases of bird flu so far have
happened because people got it directly from infected
birds. These people lived in rural areas, where many
families keep small household poultry flocks that they
slaughter, defeather, and butcher themselves. Poultry also
roam freely in some of those areas, and there are lots of
opportunities to be exposed to their infected feces.
How Can You Protect Yourself?
In most places, there is no immediate threat to humans
from bird flu. The best way to protect yourself is by doing
the same things you do to protect yourself from any
contagious illness. No matter where you live and how
healthy you are, be sure to thoroughly wash your hands
with soap and water many times a day, particularly after
going to the bathroom and before preparing meals and
eating. Wash your hands frequently if you're around
someone who is sick. Don't share that person's food or
eating utensils. It's also a good idea to wash your hands if
you've touched a surface that lots of people have been
using, such as a door handle.
You can also protect yourself by taking proper food
safety precautions. For example, never eat undercooked

Brainwash!

T o brainwash is simply to 'persuade completely', not
necessarily in a straightforward manner. It is the
manipulation of the mind whereby people are
fooled into thinking and/or acting in a different manner,
possibly against their wishes. The tactic of brainwashing
the minds of people has been deployed in recent times
by various people and companies, from politicians to
corporate companies to even cult leaders in order to
simply get what they want. The brainwashed are victims.
This tactic is a very recent one. In fact, the term
'brainwashing' is a relatively new term to the English
language it came into existence hardly 50 years ago!
Corporate companies use brainwashing in advertising.
Especially in western countries, advertising is used
extensively to influence potential consumers. The images
that flash on your television screen, accompanied by
models that enchant you, plus a little background music
barely noticeable are the vital ingredients to brainwash!
Corporate companies use this to persuade various age
groups into buying different kinds of products from
shampoos to cars to toys! Even a small child watching the
latest toy commercial will have a sudden desire for the
toy the advertising has played around with his mind.
Politicians use this ploy to fool the people the voters. Just
like our very good friend Mr. Bush did with the American
people. He overwhelmed the American people with a
repetition of lies, together with hoodwinking the people
with hundreds of facts, statistics, satellite images, reports
etc., to prove that Saddam had Weapons of Mass
Destruction. This was given continuous coverage by the
media, in an almost innocent way, to a point where the
American public was utterly convinced that Saddam had
WMD's. Colin Powell even presented satellite
photographs of WMD sites at the UN. It has been nearly
27 months now in Iraq. We found Saddam, but the
WMD's are still nowhere to be seen. Maybe Osama has
them. Speaking of Osama, has anyone seen him recently?
The US Army surely hasn't.
It's actually claimed that Satanists brainwash small
children and control their behaviour to the extent
whereby the children themselves do not know nor realize
what they are doing. In this way, it is reported that
Satanists have even 'made' children commit horrendous
crimes like murder without the children realizing what
they did. Even though these cults are now either extinct or
very rare, the fact that they once existed and carried out
these evil acts just shows how deadly the manipulation of
the mind can be especially if fragile minds are targeted.
Even other organisms brainwash! Experts in insect
behavioral physiology have recently discovered that a
special parasitic worm which develops in grasshoppers

youth with hidden messages. Once these hidden
messages become encrypted in our minds, there is a
change in attitude and behavior. These hidden dangers
are slowly creeping into the heart of our communities. If
we don't stop soon, these dangers will overcome us and
the values that we have upheld for so many decades will
crumble.
A common medium is music. Not cultural or traditional
music, but other forms of music like 'rap' which have
become extremely popular in 'modernized' countries and
contain mostly violent or crude content. When youths
'feed' this type of music into their systems hundreds of
times, over and over, the music inevitably causes changes

maybe the news speaker or the journalist might not be
telling the whole truth? He might not be lying, just
disingenuously concealing a small vital piece of
information? If we allow ourselves to accept everything
we see or hear, then we are potential victims of
brainwash. Children and youths are the most susceptible,
because young minds often tend to absorb everything
around them. These are vital defensive tactics that could
put a stop to this deadly exploitation of the mind.

My Sporting Career
My Experience

S port is part of the system of the childhood life and
its continuity pauses or diverts when the youthful
age begins when an individual decides according
to his likings with other interests and hobbies adopted.
My obsession towards sports began at the tender age of
my childhood in the gullies of Zanzibar in 1950's playing
those popular street games like marbles (chura, sokodiko,
ukuta), nyage, pita-pit and kidandi followed by tennis
ball cricket and soft ball volleyball and football. Without
pause, my affection to sports generated with the
continued encouragement and the importance of sports
administered in schools during our time. We never ran
short of time unlike the youths of the present age who
have other attachments and diversions like computers,
TV'S, etc. beside sports and thus their time is divided. I
began my career with various games facilitated in school
taking interests in cricket, volleyball, football, hockey and
table-tennis. I represented my primary school, Sir Euan
Smith Madressa in Zanzibar at the age of 12 in cricket as
well as volleyball and had an opportunity to captain the
school in both the games during the last 3 years of my
completion of my primary education. My affection to
sports enhanced when I was selected to represent
Zanzibar Combine in Volleyball and Zanzibar Ithnasheri
Gymkhana Club “A” in cricket at the age of 16 years
while I was still in Secondary School. Playing with the
veterans and the experienced players from different
clubs, I had an opportunity to learn more about the
techniques and tactics of the games that boosted my
experience and performance. I had also a chance to
captain the secondary school in cricket and volleyball for
4 years.
Moving to Dare es salaam from Zanzibar in December
1967, I joined the Ithnasheri Sports Club (later known as
Union Sports Club) and became a regular player for “A”
Division team in cricket and volleyball. Enforced with the
migration of players from Zanzibar to Dar es salaam,
Union Sports Club formed a formidable team, force to
reckon that enabled the club to clinch championships in
cricket as well volleyball. Union Sports Club became
cricket champions for 18 yrs (between 1973 and 1992)
and 3 a side volleyball champions (1968 to 1972) until
the volleyball traditional style in the country was banned.
The record tells that the club never lost any tournament
during the period. Being part of the club's team that
clinched championships in cricket and volleyball, these
achievements will remain with me as sweet memories for
the years to come.

My proudest moment in cricket was in 1984, after
representing the Tanzania National Team for 15 yrs.
(1972 to 1986) and having the honor to lead the side as
a captain for 4 yrs. Tanzania won the Quadrangular
Cricket Tournament (East and Central Championship)
under my captainship after the lapse of 16 yrs. Thus I
was awarded National Sportsman of the year.
So all along it has been cricket. I really loved the game
and enjoyed playing it. The different nature of the teams,
the happy spirit, the competitiveness of matches, the
rejoicing off the field and the celebration thereafter, the
meeting of so many good old friends, the warm
involvement and appreciation of crowds who come to
watch good cricket all contribute to the wonderful time
that I have had. With the long career of 38 years and
beginning sports career in a very young age I was
blessed to have an opportunity to play with three
generations type of players. My advice to youths, if you
need to remain on top and survive longer in your sports
career be modest, accessible and amiability to all
contemporaries. Indispensability concept is the sign of
deterioration.
My sports career ended with the retirement from
Tanzania National Team in 1986 and I hanged my boots
in 1995 as an active cricket player for Union Sport Club,
the club that I adored. My attachment with the club and
youths organization continued and I served as the
chairman of Union Sports Club (1995 to 1997) and the
chairman of Ithnasheri Union (1999 to 2000).
It is a common curiosity by the lovers and the enthusiasts
of cricket of pausing observations whether cricket has
progressed and developed in its approach& techniques
with the present technology? To an extent, positively 'yes'
but on certain areas there are declinations of
sportsmanship, discipline and commitment which are very
visible in comparison with the yester years, it is more of
commercial now than dedication and commitment
applications by the players in the past.
Sadly, sports, which earned me laurels, accolades and
fame also usurped my dearest ones. On 26th April 1982,
my eldest brother Yusuf had suffered a heart attack on
the cricket field while participating in the Union Sports
Club Veteran Cricket Festival and died on the same day.
Worse on the fateful, Sunday of 1st November 1992, my
son Kazim died in a car accident while on the way to
represent Union “C” in a cricket league game.

The 555 seater, double deck Airbus A380 is the most
ambitious civil aircraft program yet. When it enters
service in March 2006, the A380 will be the world's
largest airliner, easily eclipsing Boeing's 747.
Airbus first began studies on a very large 500 seat
airliner in the early 1990s. The European manufacturer
saw developing a competitor and successor to the Boeing
747 as a strategic play to end Boeing's dominance of the
very large airliner market and round out Airbus' product
line-up.
Airbus began engineering development work on such an
aircraft, then designated the A3XX, in June 1994. Airbus
studied numerous design configurations for the A3XX and
gave serious consideration to a single deck aircraft which
would have seated 12 abreast and twin vertical tails.
However Airbus settled upon a twin deck configuration,
largely because of the significantly lighter structure

In the Wake of the Pakistan Earthquake

I n the verse "Did you suppose that We created you for
amusement and that you would not return to Us?" (Surat
al-Muminun, 115), Allah has revealed that all human
beings are created for a specific purpose. As is revealed
in the verse "I only created jinn and man to worship Me"
(Surat adh-Dhariyat, 56), the aim of human creation is to
serve Allah.
A human being created to serve Allah has before him an
average lifespan of 60-70 years. Each individual will
remain on Earth for the period allotted to him, the
knowledge of which is hidden in the sight of Allah. As is
revealed in the verse "…the life of this world, compared to
the Hereafter, is only fleeting enjoyment" (Surat ar-Ra'd, 26),
the life of this world is very brief in comparison to the
endless life of the Hereafter.
A person is tested in the face of the events of this world
through his attitudes, moral values and intentions, and it is
very definitely not enough for him simply to say, "I believe."
Faith must manifest itself in behavior. That is because
everything, open or secret, will be revealed on the Day of
Judgment, and a most detailed account will be given.
People will not be wronged in that account, not even "… by
so much as the smallest speck" (Surat an-Nisa', 49). Those
who have done good deeds will be welcomed to the eternal
abode of Paradise with infinite beauties, whereas those
who have followed in the path of wickedness and cruelty
will find their recompense in the eternal suffering of Hell.
That is because Allah has created this brief life to distinguish
the good and righteous from others by testing them. This is
revealed in Surat al-Mulk thus:
“He Who created death and life to test which of you is
best in action…” (Surat al-Mulk, 2)
Treat your friends as you do your pictures, and place them in their best light
PEOPLE ARE TESTED WITH GOOD AND EVIL
It is revealed in the Qur'an that people will be tested with
evil as well as with good:
“We did not give any human being before you
immortality. And if you die, will they then be immortal?
Every self will taste death. We test you with both good
and evil as a trial. And you will be returned to Us.” (Surat
al-Anbiya', 34-35)
While enjoying abundance, wealth and great blessings,
people must display the moral values that are pleasing to
Allah, turn to Him in all they do, and exhibit the greatest
care with regard to His commandments and advice. That is
because abundance may be a source of trial, a test, a cause
of forgetfulness, for someone who becomes caught up in the
transient baubles of this world. Yet someone with faith will
never be ungrateful to Allah, no matter what great blessings
he may enjoy.
In addition, a person may be tested with catastrophes,
sickness, oppression of all kinds from unbelievers, slander,
snares, mockery or cruelty. Yet a Muslim knows that this is all
part of the test, and never forgets that patience in the face
of these opens the way to beautiful things. That is because
Muslims have auspiciously exchanged the life of this world

for that of the Hereafter. Since they know that their selves,
their property and all they own belong to Allah, any loss or
increase in these never affects their moral values, thought
structure or devotion to Allah.
A person may encounter all kinds of difficulty in this world
because this is an immutable law, revealed by Allah in the
Qur'an. Moreover, these times of difficulty and trouble may
arise at the most unexpected moments, and continue, or
seem to continue, for very long times. For example, one may
lose everything and everyone in a disaster, become poor
when once he was rich, encounter unexpected failure in a
field in which he had previously been successful, fall ill, or be
crippled… Yet all these things are a test, and Allah has
given those of His servants who endure such tests with
patience the glad tidings of great beauty:
“Every self will taste death. You will be paid your wages
in full on the Day of Resurrection. Anyone who is

distanced from the Fire and admitted to the Garden has

triumphed. The life of this world is just the enjoyment of
delusion. You will be tested in your wealth and in

idolaters. But if you are steadfast and guard against evil,
that is the most resolute course to take.” (Surah Al 'Imran,

which believers may be tested in this world and the proper
behavior they exhibit during the course of these are
described in Surat al-Baqara:
“We will test you with a certain amount of fear and
destiny, and that whatever befalls him does so only because
Allah so wishes. Therefore, he displays patience in the face
of all that befalls him, with enthusiasm and joy. It is Allah
Who creates all details of people's lives. In Surat al-An'am,
it is stated that all events, great or small, take place because
Allah so wishes:
“The keys of the Unseen are in His possession. No one
knows them but Him. He knows everything in the land
and sea. No leaf falls without Him knowing it. There is
no seed in the darkness of the earth, and nothing moist or
dry which is not in a Clear Book.” (Surat al-An'am, 59)
Human beings live within the sphere of time and can only
judge events by looking at them from the time in which they
live. Since they cannot know the future, they may not always
see the long-term wisdom, beauty and auspicious nature of
what befalls them. Allah, however, Who created time and

It was this desire that began him on the path of
discovering 'relativity'. To understand Einstein's theory of
Relativity one must first go back to Sir Isaac Newton.
What Einstein did with his theory of relativity was to
question the ideas that Newton had set forth. He
wondered whether time, space and mass were truly
unchangeable. It was then that Einstein put up his “Theory
of Relativity”. When people say “relativity”, they mean
that there are different points of views that make things
“relative”.
Mr. Einstein took his knowledge of these different points
of view to the world of Physics. If a person is traveling at
the speed of light, then they will see the world in a very
different way than people who are standing still do.
Einstein believed that at very high speeds, things will
shrink. A rocket ship that is flying at a very high speed

be aware. It is this knowledge by means of which Muslims
demonstrate the proper fortitude in the face of all troubles

know that "no misfortune occurs except by Allah's

W e have all heard of Albert Einstein before.
We know that he discovered something
called “Relativity”, and has something to do
with the equation “E = MC²”. To start off, think about
science. When I say, “science”, what pops into your mind?
Do you create images of crazy-looking men in white lab
coats speaking in funny German accents? Do you get
images of dark laboratories crammed with bubbling
liquids, curved glassware, test tubes, beakers and strange
machines that gather electricity? Do you think of rocket
ships and robots? Science is really more of a quest.
Scientists are people who are questing to understand the
world around them. Scientists are not crazy people who
want to create death-rays that will help them to take over
the world. Scientists are really smart people who wish to
know why / how things in the universe work.
In the 1600's, people used to think that the earth was the
centre of the universe. Two men named Copernicus and
Galileo disapproved this theory though. They took
measurements of the stars and the other planets using
telescopes, and discovered that the paths of planets and
stars were traveling around the sun, not the earth. It
meant that the earth was not the centre of the universe,
which was a big part of religious thought for that time
period. As scientists are finding out today, the earth
occupies a really tiny place in the universe. This is science
in action. People were curious about how things worked
so they decided to figure it out.

hajj even after being mustatee'.
This shows the seriousness of neglecting hajj when one is
mustatee'…such that he falls under the category of
disbelievers. God forbid.
According to a hadith from the Masumeen, “…If a person
doesn't go to hajj when it has already become wajib on
him and passes away, he dies a death of a Jew and a
Christian…”Allahu Akber! How serious an issue!
It is worth pondering why Almighty has put so much
emphasis on this act of worship.
The answer to this can be formulated from the traditions
of our Infallible leaders. After having analyzed these
traditions, we will realize how much the Almighty is
concerned about His servants' Aa'qibat (hereafter) that
he leaves not a chance for anyone who is capable, to miss
this form of worship.
Some of these traditions are:
The Holy Prophet is reported to have said that “…Not a
single person who goes to hajj, comes back empty
handed. There are those obedient servants of God who
come back from hajj with a signed contract of jannah,
guaranteeing their positions in the gardens of heavens.
Then, there are those sinful but repenting servants of
God, who come back from Hajj in a state that all their
sins are forgiven, such that they start their lives fresh with
a plain sheet of deeds. Yet, there are those unlucky
servants, who could neither get their sins forgiven, nor
guarantee their paradise, but Allah doesn't forget them
as well. They come back with their sustenance increased.”
Another tradition of one of the Masumeen says “The

month of Ramadhan, can not get his sins forgiven by Allah
but on the day of Arafat (9th Dhulhijjah) by being present
in the plains of Arafat in Mecca and sincerely asking Him

It is believed from traditions that if Holy Ramadhan
comes to its end, and a person still carries burden of sins
on his shoulder, he is the most wretched person
(Shaquiee). But, from this tradition, we can see, Almighty
through His everlasting Mercy, gives such people yet
another chance during Hajj.
In addition, the plains of Arafat are believed to be
hosting our time's Imam (ATFS) every year on the day of
Arafat…who goes there and laments on the passing of
yet another year without him being able to reappear,
rejoin his lovers and avenge for the blood of his
grandfathers, who were mercilessly tortured throughout
their lives. What can be a greater privilege for a mu'min
than to be on one land with his master, at the very same
time.
Imams are also narrated to have said that “…A person
who dies on his way back home from hajj, dies with his
sheet of deeds clean of sins, like an infant”
Through Hajj, Allah (SWT) trains his servants to build up
their will power. During hajj, in Ehraam, many things,
which are lawful under normal circumstances, become
prohibited. Any act of violation, even to the extent of
killing an insect is highly forbidden
Hajj therefore, all in all is a moving and a life changing
event, which rejuvenates the faith of sincere believers.
This shows why the Almighty with all His mercy has put so
much emphasis on performing hajj, making it obligatory
at least once in lifetime.
Unfortunate and far from Allah's mercy are those who,
despite the fact that Allah has given them wealth and
health, take hajj lightly, go on postponing hajj every year
for simply lame excuses.
Let us all sneak a look within ourselves and see if we are
not really turning our faces away from the mercy of
Allah, not really going against His pleasures…It shouldn't
happen that it gets too late, such that when at some
instant we are in desperate need of His mercy, He then
turns His attention away from us.

and complicated place to live in. There are lots of
happenings daily nay hourly which may drive one crazy

you make any move, otherwise you will ruin yourself
permanently.”

characters in the story? Your judgement will assist you in
leading a good life.
There was a young beautiful teenage girl living in town.
She was proud of her figure and boasted a lot about her
achievements in social life. Very many suitors in all walks
of life asked for her hand in marriage. But she turned
them down, one after the other. Nobody, even her
parents knew the reason. This was her secret. Time went
by and she kept on growing-astoundingly prettier than
before.
Then one fine day things began to take a new turn. Her
room was decorated with colorful lights, flags and
buntings. People and relations were invited for an
engagement party and dinner. She was finally engaged
and the air of festivity hung about in her house. There
were smiles cheers and noise of merry-making, a perfect
bliss from an earlier scene of desolation and eeriness.
Soon there was a grand wedding. She was married to the
most handsome millionaire. The wedding ceremony, a
week long was finally over. The honeymoon followed a
blissful period free of tension, stress and full of
unimaginable comfort and happiness. This rosy period in
ones lifetime was over too and they settled down to a
normal life of duties, responsibilities and concern.
They were devoted to each other and life went on
without a hitch. No domestic wrangling or battle. There
was warmth, care, understanding and perfect harmony.
Then all of a sudden, one evening the husband collapsed
over dinner. He was rushed to the hospital and died on
the way. That was the end of what was a most exemplary

children. The real nature of things we shall never know
married life.
He was buried amidst heavy sighs, cries and grief from
the family and more intense from the young widow who
was now helpless and at no ones mercy. Her hopes,
ambitions, expectations and wishes were shattered and
drowned forever in the river of oblivion. She was a most
pathetic sight, always weeping and bashing her head
against the wall every time she thought of him and their
once-upon-a-time idyllic life when they, hand-in-hand,
conversed and planned for their future. A time came
when she could not contain herself since her bedroom
haunted her days and nights. She was hysterical. The
family could not bear the scenario as well. Everyone was
deeply affected and wept at the emptiness that engulfed
the house
Something to Ponder Upon
One day when matters grew worse, she went to the
grave. She went almost berserk when she saw it and
started tearing herself out complaining of the eternal
loneliness since his death. She slept beside the grave,
woke up, slept and again woke up. It was almost evening
and she did not think of home. She resolved to sleep the
night at the graveside. What a loving wife who sought
the company of her beloved even after death.
Before sunrise next morning, she woke up and again
broke up into frenzy, weeping and tearing herself out,
“Oh my fate! My life! What is next! Where do I go from
here?”
She was choked up with grief when from far she espied a
young man hastily making his way to the grave. A
stranger he was but took pity on a young lady clad in
black and in terrible grief very early in the morning. He
offered his condolence and sympathy when he learned of
her beloved's untimely death.
The balm applied was effective, soothing and blew away
the storm in her heart and psyche. They began to
converse and enquire about each other and in time the
dialogue acquired a new dimension. The widow forgot
her grief and the man, a state hangman, forgot his duty
on that fateful day. They grew fond of each other and
very soon were ready to marry each other. She had
forgotten her husband and thought of her future. She was
too young to remain a widow for life in the midst of
desolation and loneliness.
As moments passed by in ecstasy, suddenly the hangman
realized that he was to execute a prisoner and take his
head with him to the king that morning at 8 AM. It was
already 9 AM and he was still by the graveside planning
for a marriage with this widow who had now become
lively and vivacious and wore a different expression on
her face. “This is God sent moment to make my life and I
must hold on to it lest I die poor and forsaken without
anyone to care for me” she mumbled to herself.
“Oh, this moment be my last day for the king is waiting
and I have not done my duty to the state. I'm sure he'll kill

The Silent Parents
Something to Ponder Upon

T he era of silence has ushered in. It has engulfed us
and is all around us. It is everywhere and has taken
firm roots in our daily lives. It has distanced parents
from children, brothers from brothers, sisters from sisters,
relation from relations, neighbors from neighbors, leaders
from followers, mosques from homes, society from its
members and schools from its pupils.
Among other things, its worst effect has been on families,
the smaller but very important segment of the society and
the world at large. It has produced parents who are
indifferent to what happens around them in their families
and neighbourhood. They are least bothered and do not
say anything, neither bad nor good, to their children, the
upcoming generation. They are very comfortable with
their present worldly life and mind least about spiritual
and moral growth. They have no time for sublime values
(sublimity), virtues and character building. They are
worried more about and ready to stake their lives on
materialism, pomposity, vanity and exhibitionism than on
the fundamental well-being of their flesh and blood,
society and humanity at large.
The time is gone forever when the parents worried about
their children's behavior, mannerism, modesty, spirituality
and decent nurturing. They have no time now to sit and
chat with the family at home, tell stories and learn from
the past over lunch/dinner, relax and go out on a family
picnic or visit places of interest during holidays.
They have grown dumb, blind and deaf over the years.
They live under one roof but are poles apart from their
children; each in his own cocoon torn apart by modern
luxury and materialism; they are strangely frightened of
their children; they are scared of enjoining good and
forbidding evil; they stay away from their divine
responsibility and role of parenthood.
The effect of all this silence in the midst of power and
influence which they have and fail to use in moulding their
children to become better individuals in the service of
Islam and humanity is a terrible disaster and worldwide
tragedy. Instead we have produced rebels, chain smokers,
drug addicts, prostitutes, reckless teenage drivers, fashion

snobs, hotel diners, alcoholics, oglers outside the mosque
before, during and after majlises, gossip mongers within
and outside the mosque compound during prayers,
aamals and children who cause havoc off and on
wherever they go- be it at school, mosque or in weddings.
There was a time when parents sat with their children and
warned them of the distraction of worldly pleasure and
their terrible after effects. They would tell them or read
out stories with a moral to guide and direct them on the
right path. Alas! This trend has been replaced by TV's,
discos and night clubs. What then do you expect to
harvest roses or thorns? You know the answer, don't you?
These parents were different. Their outlook was angelic,
their mode of operation commendable and commitment
to children's growth unique. They had antithetical (double)
roles to play; e.g. warmth, care and love v/s firmness,
transparency and accountability; generosity v/s
parsimony; freedom v/s surveillance; praise v/s bitter
truth.
What happens when parents fail in their duties is clearly
shown by the following story which reeks of infractions
and transgressions our unattended and uncared youth are
able to commit.

tell,” commanded the old man.

T here was a time when science seemed to be the
enemy of religious belief - that time is no more!
Modern physics and cosmology (science of the
origin and development of the universe) now provide firm
objective evidence of the existence of God, confirm the
primary attributes of God, and show how God created
the physical existence out of 'nothingness'. This knowledge
comes from a critical analysis of the 'Big Bang' theory,
Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity, and work being
done in quantum physics. The concepts behind this esoteric
scientific knowledge can now be presented in such a way
as to be understood by any person with a modern
education. There are :
We now know according to the most widely
accepted theories of cosmology that the physical
universe we see today was created out of
nothingness (meaning - no time, no space, and no
matter).
We also know that the beginning of the creation
of the universe took place by light coming into
existence at a singularity (a point with no
dimension).
We know that the matter of the physical universe
was brought into being by photons (little
packages of light energy) which, when colliding
with each other, formed the virtually infinite
number of protons, neutrons and electrons, which
in various combinations make up everything in our
physical world.
In essence, we can now accurately say that all the
matter of the physical universe, ourselves
included, is actually light slowed down.
We know that the space which contains our
physical universe is expanding. This is a concept
so alien to human thought that until Albert Einstein
developed his General Theory of Relativity early
in the 20th century it had never occurred to any
of the world's great minds, but this was stated in
the Qur'an over 1400 years ago when Allah told
us, “I am expanding the universe with my power.”
Even Einstein was so astounded by his discovery
that he falsified his data to show a universe that

was not expanding, because he well understood
that an expanding universe implies there was
somewhere in the distant past a moment of
creation for the universe.
Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity (which he
actually called his Absolutism Theorem because
he realized he had found the one thing in a
relative universe that was absolute) is about the
special qualities of light.
The Special Theory of Relativity allows us our
first objective glimpse into that which exists
beyond the material world.
We could have found anything once we got our
first glimpse beyond the material world, but what
we found is indeed remarkable. We find
Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity showing us
that the non-material existence beyond the
physical world consists only of absolutes, and
some of those absolutes are remarkably similar
to what everyone's religion has considered to be
among the primary attributes of God.
Example One: As the speed of light (300,000km
per second) is approached, time slows, and at
the speed of light, time does not pass. This means
for a photon of light which travels at exactly the
speed of light, time does not pass. Therefore the
photon is outside of time, and ETERNAL.
Example Two: Since no time passes for a photon

of light, and that photon can be observed at
different places in space, therefore that photon
of light is simultaneously in those different places
(and many other places) at the same time, and
therefore OMNIPRESENT.
Example Three: Since every bit of matter in the
physical universe is created by the energy of
light, and that light energy constantly sustains
and directs the activity of every bit of matter in
the physical existence, then there is no power
other than the power of light, light energy is all
the power that exists, and therefore
OMNIPOTENT.
Example Four: Since all knowledge that exists,
that ever existed, or will exist, is stored by light
energy and transmitted through light energy then
there is no knowledge beyond that intrinsic to
light, and therefore OMNISCIENT.
Furthermore, light does not actually exist within
the physical existence although we can somehow
perceive it. As you approach the speed of light
one of the three dimensions; the dimension in line
with the direction of motion, becomes
progressively less, and at the speed of light that
dimension becomes zero.

To determine volume we multiply height times
width times length, but if any one of those three
dimensions is zero then the volume is zero, and
that thing therefore does not exist in the material
universe. Light occupies no volume of space and
therefore has no existence in the physical
universe.
And, while everything in the physical universe has
some mass greater than zero, which is a
necessary characteristic for existence in the
material world, light has no mass at all. As you
approach the speed of light mass increases, at
the speed of light mass is infinite. Regardless of
how tiny the amount of mass you begin with, that
mass rises to infinity at the speed of light. Since
photons travel at the speed of light and do not
reach infinite mass; it means that they had zero
mass to begin with, and light therefore does not
actually exist in the material world.
In the physical existence everything is relative, the
absolute existence or non-existence of any
quality is not and can not be expressed,
everything exists between those two extremes of
the continuum from absolute expression to
absolute non-expression. We find, though, that
beyond the material existence all qualities exist
either in an infinite state or have no existence at
all, there is nothing in between.

The great significance of the above findings is that they
destroy any possible notion of the physical universe
existing as a fixed number of material particles which
are moved about by a fixed set of physical laws. It is
exactly this incorrect understanding of the physical
existence which forms the basis of the scientific
philosophy of materialism. It is the philosophy of
materialism, particularly secular materialism, which has
allowed the belief in God to be so powerfully
challenged by unbelievers in these past few hundred
years, more or less from the time of Sir Isaac Newton.
It is no longer intellectually possible nor logically
reasonable, in light of the findings of modern physics
and cosmology, to hold the view of the atheists (that
there is no God). The only logically reasonable, and
intellectually honest, conclusion that can be drawn from
the findings of modern science is that God does exist,
that the attributes of God are absolute, and that God
created the physical universe (including human life). We
are presently at the beginning of the transition point
from a secular materialistic world-view to a spiritual,
God-centered world-view.

YM: We have quite a number of good specialized
doctors in our community. Why not involve them in our
hospital so as to offer better and quality service?
JH: A number of our hospital staffs are members of our
community. This is something I am extremely proud of. We
have two senior consultants from our community Dr.
Merali and Dr. Hirji. Our head surgeon, Dr. Iqbal is also a
prominent member of our community. Our Pharmacy
division is headed by Br. Fayaz Jaffer who is a qualified
pharmacist from Dubai assisted by Sis. Sameera Fazel,
again a qualified pharmacist from Muhimbili Hospital
now perusing her Masters Degree. Our dental
department is managed by Dr. Kamaal, a well known
figure within our community and youth circles. Our
laboratory is being supervised by Sis. Sukaina Jaffer, a
very skillful and hard working lady. We have already
employed a highly experience Laboratory Technician
from India who will soon join us.
All our major departments have community members as
heads. We feel this can only work to our benefit, because
besides being professionals, they also value the welfare
of our community and therefore put in the extra effort.
We also have a number of community girls who come to
work as volunteers after completing their secondary
education. Besides, we have some young ladies assisting
us in our reception area too. We want members of our
community treating our patients, as they can relate to
them easily. However, not all doctors in our community can
be part of our team for various reasons, some personal,
and some professional. It should also be realized that the
hospital can only employ a limited number of staff.
We already have a number of visiting Specialist Doctors
conducting their clinics at Ebrahim Haji and any one with
specialized skill is welcomed to join.
Increasing the community personnel at Ebrahim Haji is a
goal I wish to pursue in future when the hospital has the
capability to employ more personnel. I am saddened
however to see that not many members in our community
are into nursing. We are looking to employ members of
our community in that department and currently have
fallen short of finding suitable nurses.
YM: How do you view the health status of our community
members? Are we serious about our health?
JH: The heath status of our community members is
appalling and I am disturbed to see young members of

our community die just for not heeding to the medical
advice or by not taking part in the medical screening
program specially organized for them. I would urge all
members to take part in these screening programs in
future. Cardiac cases, hypertension, obesity and diabetics
are on the increase.
YM: What step/action is your committee taking to
improve the image of our hospital?
JH: Constant effort is being made to improve the services
at the hospital including in-house training, drills, purchases
of new and modern equipments, holding of medical
camps, quality control of the lab tests, doctors and
medical staffs meet to discuss medical cases, internal
seminars and presentation on various medical topics. All
these are aimed at improving the services. Complains by
the patients are investigated and immediate action taken.
Close monitoring of all the staff is done and CCTV system
has been installed.
YM: How do you view youths in our community?
JH: Youths are an integral part of any community. We
are lucky to have so many. What is disappointing is the
fact that not all of them are molded in the right way and
their talents fully utilized. We need more committees like
the Literary Section. The team is doing an excellent job in
the community and by far the most active. We need
teams that help the Jamaat to function efficiently. The
youths in essence represent strength of the community. We
need teams that can help the senior members of our
community, a team that like the I.U.V.C can be fully run by
youths. There should be a youth committee headed by
senior member who could train and mobilize these youths
for various activities. We would urge youths to pursue
medical related profession like nursing, physiotherapy,
pharmacy, radiology, laboratory technicians, etc.
Hard Talk
YM: Any advice to the community and the youths in
particular?
JH: I would advise all the community youths to follow the
guidelines and the teachings of our Imams and develop
noble character and refined etiquettes. Do not waste
time, pursue your career seriously. Times ahead are very
bad and full of challenges. One of the noblest careers is
medicine.

with the
CMB Chairman
The Youth Magazine Editor had
the privilege to have a talk with
the Central Medical Board
(CMB) Chairman. This is what
he had to say...
Mr Jhanghir Hirji
YM: Please introduce yourself.
JH: I am highly privileged and it is a rare opportunity
that one gets, to be able to serve two of the most
prestigious sub-committees of Jamaat, namely Medical
and Education.
I first served on the Central Medical Board (CMB) three
years back as Treasurer under the Chairmanship of Dr.
Jaffer Dharsee, from whom I must say I have learnt a lot
about managing a hospital. In September 2004 I took
over from Dr. Dharsee as the Chairman. The CMB
manages two hospitals on behalf of our Jamaat namely:
Ebrahim Haji Health Centre and Temeke Dispensary.
These hospitals are independently managed and are
non-profit making but self financing.
YM: Being the chairman Central Medical Board, what
Is the current state of our hospital?
JH: Alhamdulilah the hospital has made progress in leaps
and bounds. Over the past 3 years, the hospital has
undergone a lot of transformation. The physical image
looks much more presentable, the services have improved,
and the reputation is slowly but surely ameliorating. At
present, Ebrahim Haji offers a wide range of medical
facilities and we look forward to upgrade and enhance
them in the near future.
The hospital has in-patients and out-patients services. We
admit serious cases and have ICU unit to take care of
cardiac cases. We have a well equipped theatre where
major surgeries are under taken by an in-house surgeon
as well as visiting surgeons. There is a radiology unit
where various x-rays, ultrasounds, echo and stress-test
are cared for. Our Ultrasound quality and interpretation
is one of the best in Tanzania. We now operate on 24
hours basis with a well stocked pharmacy, laboratory and
ambulance services. There is also a physiotherapy
department manned by a very experienced
physiotherapist. Casualty section actively manages all
emergencies day in day out and is equipped with
electronic oxygenation device, automatic defibrillator,
besides other life saving gadgets and medicines. The
Dental department has been relocated and refurbished
and we now possess excellent dental unit with full range
of services.
40 Generosity is giving more than you can, and pride is taking less than you need
YM: Any plans to improve the services offered at the
hospital?
JH: Certainly it is our vision to take our hospitals and
community health to the next level. Three years ago when
we took over, Ebrahim Haji looked different. We have
spent the first two years changing the outlook of the
hospital. A lot of money has been put into renovation.
Now the hospital looks presentable, which we believed
was the first step towards our success. An image is
important, as it is the face of any organization.
With Ebrahim Haji now looking respectable and inviting,
the next step was the services offered. Over the past
year, the committee headed by myself has tried to
improve the availability of healthcare. We have had an
experienced doctor joining us from overseas who has the
ability to handle cases which were not capable of being
handled before. We have invested heavily in the human
resources, employing experienced doctors, nurses, matron,
lab technicians. We have raised salary scales and
conduct in-house training. We even conduct drills to cater
for emergencies. We have also invested heavily in
purchase of new modern gadgets to take care of
emergencies and cardiac cases. Our goal is to turn
Ebrahim Haji into a fully operational hospital and be
able to satisfy the needs of our community. There is no
reason why all members of our community should not use
our hospital for all of their medical needs.
Periodically we conduct medical fitness screening for
community members. Diabetic camp was added this year
and Inshallah soon cardiac camp will be organized as
well. This is all in the effort to improve our services, build
confidence with our patients and care for the health of
our community members. What we lack at the moment is
MCH unit to take care of mothers-to-be and their infants.
Inshallah with the help of the Almighty, we will soon be
able to establish this section. The only draw back is lack
of adequate space.
YM: We are noticing a lot of infrastructural development
in our community as in Imambargah extension, school
extension. Why not extend our hospital also and expand
the health facilities being offered?
JH: Since inception of our Board, our goal was to expand
our hospital and we looked into different options. By the
grace of Allah as mentioned by the president of Jamaat
Anverbhai Dharamsi in one of his speeches at the
mosque, Jamaat has already acquired the building
adjacent to our hospital. Construction plan for the
extension is currently in the pipeline and we have a donor
ready to finance the project. However, it has to be
equipped and furnished; as such we would urge all
community members to join hands in realizing our dream.

Ressurection
Death, Barzakh, Resurrection. These are a few words
that that are usually shooed away by our minds whenever
the thoughts about them come. Some of us shudder when
we hear them while others find it difficult to understand
and comprehend them so as to have any reactionary
feeling, fearful or otherwise.
It is amazing! Look how Allah (SWT) uses the laws that he
has enacted in this universe to remind us about these
inevitable occurrences (i.e. death, barzakh, etc.)!
Observe; Allah created this earth and instilled an
attractive force called Gravity on it. This force pulls
everything on earth to its center, and therefore everything
remains on the ground. If today I take a handful of mud
and throw it into the sky, it will inevitably come back to
earth. Similarly, we humans, are made up of clay and
mud, standing high and mighty on earth, but just like that
handful of mud, we shall return back to it. From dust to
dust. These are reminders that Allah (SWT) has kept for
us. Everything in motion tends to go to its resting place,
and one day, you and I shall face the same destiny.
“Every soul shall taste death…” (3:185)
But death is not the end “it is just a transition to the next
life. It is the end of the test, and the start of a new life,
which is determined by the results of the test. The test is
'life'. The examiner is 'Allah' and the examined is 'man'.
Man who was given intellect and reasoning. Man who was
endowed with all the faculties to be able to worship God
intellectually. Man who was favoured by Prophets and
Guides, who helped him in this test. Man who was
honoured by Allah (SWT). Man who was entrusted by
Allah with the gift of free-will, so that he decides for
himself, without any compulsion, between Heaven and
hell.
The same man is very weak. He was created from 'mean
water'. He is weak, and can't bear the heat of the sun. He
is totally dependent on his Nourisher, who provides him
with everything necessary for him. He can't survive without
food and water, which Allah (SWT) has provided him
with. Hunger and thirst kills him. If it gets a little warmer,
he needs an Air Condition and if a little cooler, a heater.
A slight cut on his hand makes him uncomfortable, he is
very irritable. The little and petty problems of this world
turn his hair white. He can't bear sickness and disease. He
is so dependent… He needs to be loved; he needs to be
cared for, amongst other things!!
But the same man forgets that one day, he will have to
stand in front of his Lord, Nourisher and Sustainer in the
intense heat of the sun-Is he ready? There will be no food
and no water, will he survive? Will he be able to answer
the questions? What will he do when His Lord will not look
at him with mercy? The same mercy which he used to
depend on?! What will he tell his Lord? What will he do,
when his own body, which he used to adore, will bear
witness against himself?
At the same time there will be some in that day, who will

have passed the test, happily under the shade, enjoying
the cool breeze of Allah's mercy. Some will enter heaven
without being questioned. These are those who were
good in the world and took the hereafter seriously. These
are those who firmly believed and feared the day when
they would have to “stand in front of their Lord”. They
believed in one God and the Last Day and followed the
Guides. They were patient and bore the test of this
world. They were careful in this world, and were worried
about the Hereafter. They passionately hoped for His
Mercy and Love. They had faith… in Resurrection.
But do we have faith in Resurrection? What is
resurrection? Resurrection simply means being raised from
the dead. But how will we be raised from the dead?
Won't our bones be mixed with the soil? Won't we be just
bones? Some of our bodies will have completely
decomposed, then how is it possible to be raised from the
dead?
I will try, by the Grace and Mercy of Allah (SWT), to
present a scientific possibility, to the answer of this
question.
The ignorant Arabs used to argue: “what! When we are
dead and have become dust? It is highly improbable to
return [to our normal state]” then Allah (SWT) says: “We
know indeed what the earth decomposes of them, and with
us is a writing that preserves.” (50:3-4).
There is another interesting verse: “And He Who sends
down water from the sky in due measure, then we thereby
raise to life a dead land, even thus you shall be Brought

forth [from the dead].” (43:11)
When it has not rained for a very long time, the land
becomes very dry and looks dead. But immediately when
it rains, you will see different types of plants growing and
other small creatures like insects also thrive. This can be
experienced in the deserts, example, the Kalahari desert.
But how does this happen? Dry land that has not been
touched by rain for almost 3-4 years thriving with life
after rainfall? How? This is because, the seeds of the
plants remain in the soil, while the parent plants die
away. When the conditions become good for
germination, when it rains, the seeds immediately start
germinating.

Allah (SWT) is relating this phenomenon with our
resurrection. But what is the relationship between
resurrection and the above phenomenon? You see, the
land that looks dead, in fact has life-containing seeds,
which sprout when conditions are good. Similarly, our
bodies, when they decompose and become bones, the
bone and teeth cells still contain life-containing material;
The DNA. The DNA contains all the information of our
bodies, and through cloning we can replicate ourselves
physically using this procedure. Maybe in the first verse,
where Allah (SWT) says, “With us is a writing preserved”
He is referring to DNA, or any other form of
preservation. Allah knows the best.
If using the process of cloning, we can replicate a dead
person by using the DNA preserved in his/her bone cells,
than what about Allah? Our Creator and Sustainer? Is it
not easy for Allah(SWT), to bring us back to life from our
bones, and re-infuse our souls into us; thus resurrection?
Won't it be easy for Allah (SWT) to do this while He
could create you and me from a small swimming sperm?
Isn't it possible?
Allah (SWT) puts forth a challenge: “what! Are ye the
harder to create or the heaven that He built?” [79:27]
Then again, Allah (SWT) says: “Does man think that We

cannot assemble his bones? Nay, we are able to put back in
perfect order the very tips of his fingers” [75:3-4]
Finally, all the above can be summed up by an incredibly
simple verse of the
Quran: “…….He says, “Who shall revive the bones when
they have decayed? Say, “He will revive them who
produced them the first time…..”(36:78-79)
Resurrection is a fact. Let us remember this reality
everyday when we pray. Every time we stand for
Qiyaam. Let us not forget the 'Qiyaam' which will be our
longest ever. That way, at least we can be a little, just a
little prepared for the real thing that is going to occur
after our deaths.

Medical Advantages of Sajda (Prostration)

S ajda (Prostration) is a unique position or stance in
the regular prayers offered at least five times a
day. Although the basic purpose of obligatory
prayers is not to provide an exercise for people yet it is
being increasingly recognized that it has plenty of
medical advantages for the human body.
Here it is worth mentioning that Holy Prophet Muhammed
(peace be upon him) has mentioned in one of his hadith:
that 'Prayer is a cure for many diseases'. The position of
Sajda in which the forehead touches the ground is
exclusively associated with the Muslim form of prayer. It is
the climax of a Muslim's prayer and as mentioned in a
Hadith a Muslim is nearest to Allah in this position.
The messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: "The nearest a
servant comes to his Lord is when he is prostrating himself,
so make supplication' (in this state)" In another hadith, the
Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) advised Muslims to
perform Rukuu (bowing) and Sajda (prostration) properly.
In another hadith, he (peace be upon him) advised to
perform Sajda (Prostration) and bowing calmly and to
get up only when the body has come to ease. Hence the
first positive effect upon a person who prostrates or does
Sajda (Prostration) is that he comes nearest to Allah and
hence in that condition he can supplicate.
Psychological advantage:
This is a great psychological advantage and it gives
relief to the person concerned as life is full of worries
and in this position he gets at least a transient refuge
from the agonizing problems.
When a person goes to the position of Sajda
(Prostration), his whole body is in active motion. This
position can be considered as a mini dive as the musalli
(one who offers prayer) goes to rest his forehead on the
ground while his hands are placed at the sides. This
brings most of the body muscles if not all in active motion
and serves to give them some exercise. The hands are
then specifically stretched out and hence the forearm as
well as arm muscles are supposed to bear the weight in
the Sajda (Prostration) position. It gives good exercise to
the muscles of the upper limb. The Prophet (peace be
upon him) in a hadith advised not to put the forearms
flatly on the ground but to keep them elevated above
ground and this is better for the forearm and arm
muscles.
Sajda (Prostration) is a unique position as this is the only
position in which brain (or head) becomes lower than the
heart and hence for the first time the blood gushes
towards the brain with full force whereas in all other
positions (even when lying) brain is above the heart when
it has to work against gravity to send blood to the brain.
In the position of Sajda (Prostration) due to the increased
blood supply the brain receives more nourishment and it
has good effect upon memory, vision, hearing,

concentration, psyche and all other cognitive abilities.
People who offer their prayers regularly have more will
power and can cope with the difficulties of life in a much
better manner.
They have fewer incidences of headaches, psychological
problems and other defects of cognitive function. In the
unique position of Sajda (Prostration) the neck muscles
get best exercise. They have to bear the load when the
forehead lies at the ground hence the neck muscles
become stronger. One can note the intense pressure at
the neck muscles in the position of Sajda (Prostration)
specially the active motion of the neck and the facial
muscles when the head is being lifted. (E.g. one inch
above the ground) And it will be noticed that they are in
a very active motion.

More strong cervical muscles mean the cervical vertebra
will be better protected. Strength of cervical muscles is
important as the head rests upon cervical vertebra
supported by cervical musculature. In fact the head
performs rotator movements over the cervical vertebra. In
any accident cervical neck examination is especially
important to the physicians because of its extraordinary
importance. It is uncommon that a person who offers his
prayers regularly will get the usual neck myalgias or
cervical spondylosis as the neck muscles particularly
become very strong due to the 34 sajdas (Prostrations)
offered daily in five prayers.
The unique position of Sajda (Prostration) also has
positive effects upon the back muscles as while going into
Sajda and getting up from it, the back muscles contract
actively and they become stronger. Probably it is because
of this reason that a person who is regular in prayers will
(rarely) get backache.
Finally it must be reminded that (even though) prayer is
not meant to be an exercise, there are a lot of medical
advantages associated with it. Still the best blessing is the
peace of mind, which a person derives by the
accomplishment of his duty to Allah by fulfilling an
obligation
