“DECODING THE WEATHER MACHINE”

A Critique Paper by Angelica Mae Y. Flores

This is a critique on “Decoding the Weather Machine,” a documentary film by the

NOVA production for WGBH Boston, written, produced and directed by Doug Hamilton
together with his co-producer and senior executive producer, Caitlin Saks and Paula S. Apsell.
This documentary film is about taking the viewers on one of the grandest scientific adventures
to help us understand the happenings of our planet, what to realize and expect ahead in the
future, and what actions we can prepare and make about it. One of the two-hour episodes of
this documentary which was shown to us focused more on NOVA’s investigation of our
climate change and started with how it affects us most and our weather. Climate change is
undeniably one of the greatest challenges in our modernized world today, yet there are many
hoax and misleading information which has been spread to the public that hinders the ability
of many individuals to fully grasp and understand the issue hence, this film wants to end all
the unnecessary confusion and helps define the way forward.

From the documentary film I’ve watched, I’ve been analyzing these questions. How
will climate change give impact to the weather we experience and what are the possible
outcomes of these changes? Do we actually notice the changes in our weather due to climate
change? What is the evidence that our changing climate in influencing our weather? How are
these two related? How these does warmed up our planet? Since a group of experts, scientists
and other professionals in the film were working and studying hard together to answer these
kind of questions popping into my head, I cannot agree less and support their studies,
conjectures, theories because they are based from facts and they used scientific methods
upon thorough investigation especially their findings which they agreed that our climate is
changing and we humans and our activities on this planet are the culprit behind this. As I
analyzed, why this latest trend was different from other cycles in Earth’s history and proofs
were presented that we humans were behind this. It tracks the pioneering explorations to
understand our climate changing which started more than 200 years ago, and scientists
revealed gradual increase of carbon dioxide levels in the air which became the major driver
of climate and a key factor in regulating Earth’s thermostat.

As our world is progressing due to technological advancements, I cannot deny the fact
that these can lead to many factors that contributes to the increasing level of CO2 in our
atmosphere such as industrial emissions, vehicle exhausts, household activities such as
burning of plastics, using pesticides and etc., burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, forest fires,
and many more all over the world. From my point of view which supported the scientists’
findings, these activities leads to the changes in the composition in our atmosphere which it
greatly affected our weather trapping more heat then and now hence, Global Warming takes
place. From seeing the experts studying the major aspects in our climate system such as the
land, sea, ice and atmosphere itself, I can say that the investigation and exploration of climate
change will really be traced fully and proper measures and assessment will be made. This is
to find out what we humans living on this planet can do to avoid the suffering that our
changing climate will make both by adapting to the changes already underway, and by using
technology to migrate the worst possible outcomes.
