Remy Jungerman. Where the River Runs is the first comprehensive monograph on the work of
Remy Jungerman. In his work Suriname-born Dutch artist Remy Jungerman (1959) searches for
a visual language that will bring different cultures together. His recent work is inextricably bound
up with African traditions and the Western, modernistic art tradition. He is interested in the
intersecting paths travelled by motifs from Africa, the Surinamese Maroon culture, and 20th
century Modernism. By exploring the convergence of patterns and shapes from these seemingly
disparate cultural landscapes, he reveals the distillation of time and identity.

Prix de Rome 2019. Beeldende Kunst / Visual Arts accompanies the eponymous exhibition at
Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam with new work by the artists who have been shortlisted for the Prix
de Rome 2019.It is centred on the work of Sander Breure & Witte van Hulzen, Esiri Erheriene-
Essi, Femke Herregraven and Rory Pilgrim. According to the international jury, these artists are

The Prix de Rome is the oldest and most generous award in the Netherlands for visual artists
below the age of 40.The purpose of the award is to identify talented visual artists and to
encourage them to develop and increase their visibility.Since 2012, the award has been
organized and funded by the Mondriaan Fund.

Utwrydsk is a genealogical research into the maternal line of the artist. On 20 November 2013,
Kie Ellens, curator of contemporary art at the Fries Museum, and author of this book, visited
Fokkema studio. Instead of buying a work, he proposed the small drawing Mem is yn't ljocht
should be the starting point of a commission. The result, the installation with the same title as this
book, Utwrydsk, was exhibited at the Fries Museum from 4 November through 31 December
2017.
