1 Introduction
WinTrans is a tool to analyze route based vibration and transient data collected with
Windrock's portable analyzer. It will usually be started from the Windrock portable
analyzer code by clicking on the Waveform/FFT icon. Optionally, it can be started in
a stand-alone mode if desired.

For vibration data, the software allows plotting of the FFT for each route point and, if
the waveform was saved, the waveform used to compute the FFT.

The program also provides a report of the overall vibration levels at each route point
measured on the selected day along with a comparison to the previous overall
measurement and the overall limit set in the route point definition.

A route editor is provided to create and edit the route files for vibration and transient
point definitions.

For transient analysis, it provides the following plot types.

· Magnitude/Phase
· Shaft CenterLine
· Orbit
· Waveform
· FFT

There are several types of plots available in WinTrans. For more information on a
specific type, click on the link below:

· FFT
· Time Waveform
· Waterfall FFT
· Magnitude/Phase
· Shaft Centerline
· Orbit

4.2 Point Selection

Located to the right of the toolbar, this list box displays the vibration point data
available in the currently loaded file. If the file was loaded using Open File and Plot,
clicking in this listbox will plot the FFT of the selected point. Otherwise, click on the
desired point description to select the record and use the view menu to select the
desired plot. Note that the data in the above example may be different on your
system.

4.3 FFT
This plot shows the fast fourier transform(FFT) of the time waveform data. The
default frequency unit is CPM. To display frequency in Hz, select Hertz from the
available frequency units in the Settings menu before plotting the FFT. Once set to
Hertz, this choice will be retained until the program is closed or CPM is selected as
the frequency unit.

4.4 Time Waveform

This plot shows the original time waveform from the analyzer. The overall value for
the measurement appears in the upper right of the plot. If an rpm is available,
dashed vertical lines occur at times corresponding to complete rotations of the shaft.

© Windrock, Inc. 2005

14 VA Options Manual

If the cursor is enabled, clicking on a point on the graph line will place the cursor at
that point and display the time and amplitude at that point in the status bar below the
plot.

The 1X Filter check box in the status bar applies a digital filter to the data to remove
noise and higher order signals from the waveform.

4.5 Waterfall FFT

The waterfall plot shows a sequence of FFTs for the transient data set. If there are
more than 32 FFTs in the transient data set, a selection dialog appears to allow the
user to select the starting RPM for the plot. The plot will display up to 32 FFTs
following the one taken at the indicated starting RPM.
4.6 Magnitude/Phase
A Magnitude/Phase plot is the plot of the magnitude of the 1X RPM component of
the time waveform and its phase with respect to the trigger signal plotted against the
shaft RPM. The magnitude is shown in red and the phase is shown in blue. The
magnitude curves have rectangular boxes at RPM values for which there is a time
waveform available. To look at either the Waveform, FFT, or Orbit plot at that
speed, place the mouse cursor over the box at the desired speed and click the right
mouse button to bring up a selection box to choose the plot of interest.

Every 10th Magnitude/Phase point, the analyzer saves a waveform and FFT for
further analysis. Magnitude/Phase points which have additional data associated with
them are indicated by black rectangles on the magnitude plot. To look at the
Waveform, FFT, or Orbit plot associated with a specific point, right click on the box
and select the desired plot from the selection list provided. Waveform, FFT, or Orbit
plots are available from this list.

4.7 Shaft Centerline

The shaft centerline plot shows the change in the average values of the horizontal
and vertical waveform data. The data at the first RPM point measured is used as the
zero point for the plot.

4.8 Orbit
In an orbit plot, the channel 2 data is plotted against the channel 1 data (or, if
channels 3 and 4 were enabled, the channel 4 data is plotted against the channel 3
data) for the first shaft revolution after the start of data collection. The starting point
of the orbit is indicated by a small, filled circle on the graph. The arrow in the lower
right quadrant indicates the direction of rotation for the orbit. By convention, the
vertical axis for the plot is the channel with the lower number, that is, channel 1 or
channel 3 is plotted on the vertical axis and channel 2 or 4 is plotted on the

horizontal. Since the data may have a significant DC offset, the deviations from the
average value are plotted. The check box on the left end of the status bar enables
and disables a 1X filter on the plotted data. Note that at higher RPM, there may not
be enough waveform points in a single revolution to filter the data.

6.2 ID Point Description

Each route point must have a unique name. Names can be up to 30 characters long
and should describe the measurement point as completely as possible. If multiple
channels are used, an indication of what each channel is used for is recommended.
6.3 Number of Channels
Select the number of channels of data to be taken at this route point.
6.4 Gain
Select the gain that the analyzer applies to the sensor input. The default gain is 1.
Optionally, a gain of 5 can be chosen if needed. Applying gain to the sensor signal
reduces the maximum range of the sensor but may be useful when looking at smaller
signals. For example, an accelerometer with a maximum range of 50g would have a
range of 10g with the gain set to 5.

6.5 RPM
Enter the expected RPM for the point. If the analyzer does not measure the RPM at
this route point, the user will be asked to enter the machine speed when the route
point is taken. If the user chooses not to enter a measured RPM in the analyzer,
this expecter RPM value will be used in any calculation that requires a machine

22 VA Options Manual

speed, such as order markers.

6.6 Scale
Set the maximum y axis range on the meter display.

Check the Autoscale box to have the analyzer automatically scale the plot.

6.7 Sensor Type

Select the sensor type for each pair of channels. If channels 3 or 4 are used, a
sensor type must also be selected for those channels. Allowed sensors are
accelerometers, velometers, prox probes and 4-20 mA sensors. Changing the
sensor type will automatically select the default display units.
6.8 Display Units
Select the units used to display the data. Accelerometer data can be displayed in
g's rms, inches per sec , peak, or in mils peak to peak. Velometer data can be
displayed in inches per sec, peak or in mils peak to peak. Prox probe data is
displayed in mils peak to peak only. Data from a 4-20 ma sensor is displayed in
user units only.
6.9 Sensitivity
Enter the sensor sensitivity in volts per engineering unit. For 4-20 mA sensors, enter
the sensor reading at 20 mA.

6.10 Averages
Select the number of averages from the drop down list or enter a number in the box.
Typically, 4 averages would be used for a standard vibration point. For transient
data, set the number of averages to 1.

6.11 Lines
Select the number of lines of resolution desired in the FFT from the drop down box.
Increasing the number of lines increases the resolution in the spectrum but also
increases the time required to take the data for that point.

6.12 FMax
Select the maximum frequency for the FFT. All frequencies are expressed in CPM.

Route Editor 23

6.13 Window Type

Select either Hanning or Uniform window for the FFT calculation.
6.14 Analyzer Mode
6.14.1 Analyzer Mode
Route based collection points can be taken in any one of three modes, linear +,
fft subtraction, and transient. Select the appropriate mode from the drop down list.
6.14.2 Linear + and FFT Subtraction
Linear + is the normal mode of data collection in route mode. This mode takes the
indicated number of waveforms and averages appropriately.

FFT Subtraction stores the difference between two successive FFT measurements.

In either of these modes, the available options are Sync, Overall Limit, and
Save Options.

6.14.3 Sync
Select either free run or TDC for synchronization of the data collection with the
machine. If free run is selected, there is no relationship between the machine
rotation and the start of data collection. If TDC is selected, acquisition begins when
the analyzer receives the once per turn signal from an encoder or other trigger
source. When averaging, TDC sync will start each acquisition at the same point in
the shaft rotation. Free run takes successive samples without waiting.

6.14.4 Overall Limit

Enter the value to use as an alarm limit for all channels at this collection point.

6.14.5 Save Options

In route mode, the user can choose to save both the time waveform and the FFT or
just the FFT. Select which option to use for the route point in the Save Options box.

6.14.6 Transient
Transient mode collects data at specific RPM or time intervals to allow an analyst to
identify critical speeds for rotating shafts or diagnose other speed dependent
problems. Typically, these measurements are done either at startup or shutdown of
the machine. To set up a transient measurement, set the Mode to transient, and
enter values for Delta RPM and Delta Time. The analyzer will take a waveform
measurement at the speed interval specified by Delta RPM. If the measurement is
to be made during coast down, Delta RPM must be negative. If the speed has not
changed by Delta RPM in the time Delta Time, the analyzer will take and analyze the

data at that time.

During startup, acquisition will stop when the machine exceeds the RPM given in the
RPM value for this point.

In transient mode, the available options are RPM Increment, Time Increment, and
Trans File Name.

Transient mode is available on the 6310 VA and as an option on the 6310 PA.

6.14.7 Delta RPM

When setting up a transient measurement, set Delta RPM to the rpm increment
between magnitude and phase measurements. If the transient measurement is
done during coast down, Delta RPM must be negative. Waveform data is saved for
every tenth point taken.

6.14.8 Delta Time

Delta Time specifies the maximum time interval to wait to take data during a transient
measurement. If the RPM has not changed by Delta RPM in the time given by this
parameter, the analyzer will take the next data point.

6.14.9 Saving Transient Data

Enter the file name to use to store the transient data in this field. The file name is a
maximum of 8 characters. It must be a file name that is consistent with MS-DOS file
naming conventions, A-Z, a-z, 0-9 are allowed in the file names but special
characters such as *, ? are not accepted. It is best to try to select a file name that
describes the measurement as well as possible in the allowed number of characters.
6.15 Collection Point List
The bottom right corner of the route editor shows a list of the points in the current
route. To edit a route point, click on the point description in this list. After editing
the point, click the Save Point button to save the edited point to its current position,
making permanent changes to the point. Click the Add Point button to add the
revised point description to the end of the route. Since all point names must be
unique, the point ID must be changed before the point can be added. To delete a
point, highlight the point in the list and press the delete key.

To rearrange the points in the route, click on a point to select it, and drag it to its new
position by holding down the left mouse button. Release the mouse button when the
cursor is over the new position for the point.

Click the OK button when finished editing. Click the cancel button to close the editor

7 Band Editor
7.1 Band Editor Overview
The band editor is used to define individual ranges of frequencies, or bands. These
bands are then used by the Vibration Report and the Band Alarm Report to indicate
frequency peaks within these bands. To use the bands, define the set using the
band editor. Then, use the Route Editor to define which points are to use band sets.

Click on the form below for more information.

7.2 Add Band

To add a new band, click Add Band, which opens the Band Definition dialog shown
below:

Band Editor 27

A band can be defined in Hertz, CPM (cycles per minute), or Orders.

Note: To use Orders, the RPM value must be configured for the point using the
Route Editor.

If Update Frequencies is checked, frequencies will be converted to the appropriate

values when different units are selected. Uncheck Update Frequencies to disable
this behavior.

Once the units have been selected, enter values for the remaining fields and click
OK.

7.3 Editing Bands

After a band has been added to a band set, it can be modified using one of three
methods.

Method 1
The first method is to move the mouse over the band and left click and drag the lines
that define the band. In other words, move to one of the lines that define the band
(frequency or alarm level), click and hold the left mouse button, move the mouse to
the new location, then release the left mouse button. Note that after the left click and
hold, the corresponding value is displayed in the status bar at the bottom of the band
editor window, and as the line is "dragged", the new value is displayed in there as
well.

Method 2
The second method is to move the mouse over the band, right click and select Edit
Band... from the context menu which opens the Band Definition dialog.

Method 3
The third method is to click Edit Bands... in the main band editor form. See
Displaying Bands for more information on using this feature.

28 VA Options Manual

Note: While Method 1 is a convenient way to graphically manipulate a band, values

are rounded when editing bands using this method. If exact values are required for
frequency or alarm levels, use one of the other two methods.

The bands in a band set may be overlapping and can have different units.

7.4 Context Menu

The context menu is accessed by moving the mouse over a band in the band editor
and clicking the right mouse button. The context menu is shown below:

The context menu also provides access to the following commands:

· Bring to Front
· Send to Back
· Delete Band
· Edit Band...

All of these commands apply to the selected band, which is the band the mouse was
over when clicking the right mouse button.
7.5 Displaying Bands
To display the values of all the bands in a band set, click Edit Bands... to display the
Alarm Band Definitions dialog shown below:

© Windrock, Inc. 2005

Band Editor 29

The frequency and alarm levels may be edited using this form. Click in a cell and
type the new value. Repeat this process for any cells that need to be modified. Click
OK to save the changes.

Note: The units may not be changed in this form. The units must be changed using
Edit Band... from the context menu. See Editing Bands for more information.

The Visible checkbox determines whether or not the band is displayed in the
band editor form.

If a band set contains overlapping bands, one band may be hiding part or all of
another band. When this occurs, perform the following to display different bands. If
one band is covering another band, move the mouse over the band that is visible,
right click and select Send to Back from the context menu. If a band is partially
visible, move the mouse over that band, right click and select Bring to Front from
the context menu. These commands have no affect on the band except for the way
it is displayed in the band editor.

7.6 Deleting Bands

To delete a single band from a band set, click Delete Band and choose the band
from the list.
