PgDip/MSc Energy Programme / Wells FT Coursework 2010

Wells Coursework

Due Date: 10th December 2010

Review

This coursework is designed as a self study programme to further the student's

knowledge from that of the course notes by means of web and publication
searches and development of company contacts.
You are the Asset Team Manager with Kenmac Petroleum Corporation. A new
vertical exploratory well has been proposed for drilling on a newly licensed Daisy
Field. You are required to carry out the following tasks as part of the well
planning using the attached data:

1. Select a drilling rig to drill the given well through pay sand B.
Consideration should be given to such factors as the water depth,
environment, depth to target, etc. Provide a brief specification of your
selected rig. Take the air gap and the water depth to be 25m, and 100m
respectively. All other depths are as shown on the graph.
2. From the Daisy Field – Pressure Profile graph make a plot of the pore
pressure (lb/gal or SG) against depth (ft). What is the pore pressure
gradient from 1900 – 2100 m in psi/ft ?
3. Using the graph of pore/fracture pressures against well depth estimate
provisional casing setting depths. If required modify these by considering
the suitability of the formations.
4. Select mud types and weights for each section of the well. What rig
equipment is required to keep the mud correctly conditioned ?
5. Specify the Class, and weight (ppg) of cement to be used for each casing
string. Give reasons for the importance of the casing combined with the
cement.
6. Make an estimate of the weight of the drill string and the casing string to
be used in the final section of the well. Using the heavier of the two,
estimate a suitable rated derrick capacity.
7. Discuss the reservoir characteristics and the different methods of
completing and producing the well. Indicate the components required and
their function.
8. What steps are taken to ensure the safety of the well from a gas kick.
Describe, with the aid of a diagram, the different function of the Blow Out
Preventer (BOP). Estimate the pressure rating of the BOP.
9. Make a labelled schematic diagram of the well showing the casing,
cementing and completion details.

Assume the following:

No surface/shallow gas in the area..

30" Conductor casing preset at 300m TVD BRT.
Average drilling rate over the entire well is 6.25m/hr (assure 24hours/day)
including trips.
Clearly state any other assumptions made in your report

Give concise reasons for your decisions, and selections.

Note: The course work contributes approximately one third or your final
grade

General Requirements

You are expected to produce a professionally written report with an Executive

Summary, Conclusions, List of contents etc. Do not submit an essay.
Provide clearly numbered sections, headings, and number each page of the
report. Take care with grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

To help the readability with the report provide key equations and results in the
main report. Put the detailed calculations in appendices at appropriate points in
the main report.

If you need some reference material on report writing it can be obtained from
Module ENS000 (PG Learning Support). If you are in any doubt, or need
clarification about the assessment make sure you ask your Tutor before you
submit the report

Specific Requirements

• Report word length 2 000 – 2 500 maximum. The word count excludes
tables, figures, calculations, and content of appendices.
• Use 1.5 line spacing, verdana, font size 11.
• All calculations should be clearly shown in the report.
