INTERVIEW WITH PARENTS

 Being a parent, what can you say about the Science Education today?
Jolly: Today, many.. there are many changes for training the children especially through
experimentation. They have different ideas to explore and discover through experimentation.
Then, what else? Science is.. science before and today are different because today is too high-
tech with many discoveries through internet, surfing in the midst of technology with internet.
Because before, they (teachers and students) only depend on books, references that they can
get for which they will afterwards study then do experiments for actual.. actual.. actual
experimentation. But, today’s age is much more modern and advanced. That is why education
then is very different compared to the present.
(cut—next interviewee)
Parent 2: Lots of it! There are several things science has helped a lot in terms of the anatomy
of the body, about the nature, ecosystem and many more about the atmospheric condition.
Countless of things, yes.
Interviewer: What about the k-12 science curriculum?
Parent 2: About K-12, I am not quite convinced with the curriculum. Although K-12 may outright
add learning to the children (students) but in the case for the parents who suffer financial crisis..
I think it only adds as a burden to them, to ourselves, especially given that our children were
supposedly expected to work after schooling. And if you think about it, previous graduates
hadn’t even experienced K-12 themselves but their teaching are still okay especially if you are
a teacher and you haven’t come across the curriculum. I have a sibling who is also a teacher
yet despite not having schooled with K-12 curriculum, she’s really good and got promoted quite
sooner than we thought. It depends, however, the addition of years—ony slows down the—
especialy to the (poor). It’s only advantageous to those families who can afford it. But, to us,
who are poor.. a bother, it’s very inconvenient.
Interviewer: So you’re saying the old and present curriculum are the same? Only with addition
of years?
Parent 2: Yes, years are now added but if I were to decide about the K-12, I’d say it should be
terminated and dismissed because it simply increases the burden in the family. Especially.. like
the livelihood of some which is only enough to buy the staple (rice) without dishes and extra..
instead of working (to help the family), they are still stuck studying in schools (laughs).
(cut—next interviewee)
raka maka apply ug trabaho. O, dili maglisod kung magkapamilya ka, dili maglisod imong
pamilya kay naa man kay kaalam so dali ra kay nimo makaab-ot imong mga pangandoy. So
dako jud kaayo ni nga tabang ning education.
Of course, it’s imperative that children (students) clearly understand them (science concepts)
because.. these students today need education in order for them to strive and to expound their
learning and knowledge or else, they would not go far to have the success in life because
education is one foundation that indicates once your educated you know everything and you
can quickly find jobs. And once you settle down to have a family, your family wouldn’t
experience difficulty because you have the education and knowledge to reach your dreams and
goals in life. So this we have in education, it’s a big help.
Interviewer: Okay, what about in the field of science? What can you tell about the curriculum,
students, teachers?
Parent 3: Science is extremely important for the students. Why? Let’s take the natural
phenomena happening around us as an example.. like typhoon. It’s one thing that allows us to
use technology, to know when storms occur and on which region or area is affected to raise
awareness among the people. Without science, these natural disasters such as earthquake
wouldn’t be perceived and notified to raise alarms to the people which makes science important
because it is one .. that serves an instrument to alert and aware people related to science
Interviewer: Among the field of science, Earth science relates to this which revolves around
volcanic eruption, storms, typhoon and alike.

 What can you suggest to enhance the implementation of science curriculum?

Jolly: Continue the curriculum in order to further the learning and knowledge that are yet to
discover by the students especially on modern and high-tech concepts related to technology.
And not only just that but they’d also learn inventions like how bulb gives light and experiments
on robots. It would be applied in their study even more so. They just have to study to learn
more.
(cut—next interviewee)
Parent 2: Well.. I think I would relate that about earthquakes. One should be informed—that
they have options.. which involves vulcanologists, right? So, there is a need for this to be
emphasized and be given with attention since suddent accidents can occur during this
phenomenon and without warnings, it’s quite difficult that’s why this should be one of the
content to give more focus to discover more ways to predict how and when this happens. Like
that. It’s (earthquake) very dangerous among all calamities because storms can now be
detected besides diseases and illneses, that is. That’s why our.. shoud be advanced, medicines
should be prioritized because I think we are always left behind, right? With so many infections
and viruses emerging like a wildfire such as chikungunya and others. Yes, we are taking
medicines, expecting something yet without no definite closure of optimal solution because
others are dying out of discovering—they are making—us—what do you call it? Experiment,
yes! Like what happened with dengue—ah—what was about it? Vaccine? Look, what
happened, so many young lives were lost, killed. But the main.. earthquakes should be given
importance. This.. this tragedy befalling before us. Yes, it should. Well, for me, I don’t exactly
have suggestions to offer or to add for the scientist’s novelties—what they can predict and all.
What I want to give a say is that signs of calamaties should be notified for the people to be
prepared. Like in Manila, buildings are so massive taking up 20-60 floors high above the air.
With predictions and forecasts, they can’t call for duty for the fear of earthquakes since if there’s
nothing (signs), countless of casualties are at stake.
(cut—next interviewee)
Parent 3: Much better if it’ll improved now that we’re in the middle of Computer Age. We get to
monitor and understand the calamities and its roots like for instance, earthquakes. We can
easily monitor them because of the science today. Very high-tech and advanced, indeed.
Interviewer: So, in what way will it be enhanced?
Parent 3: Subjects in science should be given and reinforced with quality in order to enhance
their learning.
Interviewer: What else? What about their studies?
Parent 3: I think it increases their.. (learning, skills, etc.) because they get to stay up too late
studying about science but it also allows them to drain their energy with no rest in between their
works. I saw how tired they were when doing assignments especially ones who are difficult and
advanced.

 In your perspective, what way do you think would the concept in science is learned best
by the student?
Jolly: The teachers should explain clearly and not the students alone.. directly facilitating the
them to discover things. Also, instruction should be given explicitly on what is to be done, then
discussion and workshop for the students follow. If they already know about the workshop—
that makes the student be aware of they should do.. since an explanation was instructed before.
It should be more child centered. Child-parent-teacher kind of relationship. This means there is
a collaboration between them. Because sometimes parents leave their kids alone without their
assistance and helping hands. Without them, the child would not learn. Because they rely on
teachers too much. If the parents do not show any concern or interest on the knowledge of
science, then it’s (child’s learning) futile. That’s why children more prefer to surf in the internet
to study.
(cut—next interviewee)
Parent 2: Ways of the students? Study! (laughs)
Interviewer: What about the teacher’s way of teaching?
Parent 2: On the students? That they will learn quickly?
Interviewer: Yes.
Parent 2: I think they should teach kids manually. Not—oh yes—it should be hands-on like they
can manually teach them outright topic by topic.
(cut—next interviewee)
Parent 3: It depends if they can easily understand it, if they’re bright. But clearly if they’re stupid,
then they won’t get it fast.
Interviewer: In your own perspective, what way do you think that students can easily learn the
science concepts?
Parent 3: Digital stuffs like laptop, internet should be used in order to access online for research
purposes—to be able to search for topics they need to study. If they personally don’t have it
then, there’s internet café nearby to walk through.
Interviewer: Everything you said connects to technology including gadgets and it’s very huge..
Parent 3: So advanced the technology is today Before students couldn’t have digital devices
like laptops, but their access to information is through books. But in these presentdays, I see
students carrying laptops instead of books due to the rapid modernization of our technology
today which is linked with science. Because of science, improvement became visible..

 How helpful are the instructional materials in learning science concepts?

Jolly: Uhm.. materials are provided to the students because what would they rather do then?
When the support lacking is coming from the teacher causing them to resist coping up to any
project they are ought to do.
Interviewer: What is the role of instructional materials?
Jolly: In order for the student to learn how to do things, guided by the instructional materials, if
ever they find any guide, they would know how things work. Instructional material is more
helpful for supporting child’s learning otherwise, they would end up gawking over nothing if no
learning resource is provided with all the support.
Interviewer: And what do the teachers use as their instructional material?
Jolly: They have.. what we call as issue sent by the DepEd for the materials in laboratory like
apparatus. Today, many apparatus are provided for the experimentation such as test tubes,
weighing scale, actually there are so many of it (like for the reproductive system). In a science
laboratory, there’s always that.
(cut—next interviewee)
Parent 2: There are gadgets like laptop.
Interviewer: Do you think it’s helpful to the students?
Parent 2: You mean laptop like this?
Interviewer: Yes, and books.
Parent 2: Of course, books and laptops are very useful especially when connected with internet
to save important files. You can’t really take down note in a notebook when you’re much in a
hurry to copy large files. How many chapters, books are needed? What you need is a hard
drive, (or) usb where you can put your files since you’re only to scan it, and to convert into (a
file) the laptop. Then you have your files! So, it is easier to study (with gadgets) than the to
handwrite or summarize each important detail, right? Then, it also depends also on the setup,
ma’am. It dependes on the.. child. What they would rather do..
(cut—next interviewee)
Interviewer: Do you think gadgets like cellphones offer a huge help?
Parent 3: Yes, cellphones are. Before, cellphones didn’t exist. It’s even a ‘long distance’
problem to go to PLDT just to have a call. But today long distance is noticeably gone and you
can now do that even at home. In one click, you can dial a number and call. So there’s indeed
a difference. At present, science really improved.

 What are the existing Ims used in teaching electron configuration?

Jolly: Before, charts.. traditional (materials) are used but today swapped that with high tech
ones. Using powerpoint, one can project (the ppt) through the projector. Television can be used
in order for the kids to see how something is being done. So, high tech.
(cut—next interviewee)
Interviewer: Yeah, you’re right kuya. Laptops? Gadgets? Do these instructional materials very
useful today?
Parent 2: Yes, they’re very useful, ma’am. Then, we have charts that are now considered too
old-fashioned. But we’re in the new millennial so it just fits that our things like laptops are high-
tech.
(cut—next interviewee)
Parent 3: Well, we didn’t have that in our time..
Interview: So, how was the concepts taught? Other than computers, what else?
Parent 3: Related to science?
Interview: Yes, anything related to science. What things do teachers use in the classroom?
Parent 3: What they normally use are books, chalk, projector because we’re too modern today.
We see that on..
Interview: Are they still being used knowing we have laptops and alike?
Parent 3: Yes, laptops is still used. Projector and TV, too. TV with videos and all.
Interview: What other materials can you think of?
Parent 3: Printer—when doing researches.

 How effective are those instructional materials in the mastery of the concept?
Jolly: With the presentation, ppt and the actual (performance)—they’d get it for sure. But in
our.. (school), there’s still scarcity, incomplete resources. There may be for other schools, but
ours lacks any of that. There is a need for issuance concerning laboratory equipment in order
to have an individualized instruction because I don’t believe in groupings knowing students will
rely on leader that sometimes only secretary to do the task. I like individual than groupings in
order for all of them to participate because I know they would very much strive hard because
it’s an individual job. And if by group, only the leader, secretary are active, thus will learn
something. Just the three of them, they will report and discuss while the others missed the
chance to learn. It’s okay with high school. The problem is also because of the lack of materials.
And yes, IMs are very effective. It’d be much better if there’s IMs than nothing but with
imagination only. Charts or drawings are employed before but today prefers powerpoint with
too many designs and animated videos alike. But don’t overuse it for it may lose the interest of
the students for long. One could use it once a week, but not regularly. And today, kids are pretty
much more focused on hands-on.
(cut—next interviewee)
Parent 2: Yes, they’re really effective but it still depends on how it is used. There are laptops
today that are associated with inappropriate games. But in terms of academic, it is very useful
for saving files or school stuffs for requirements alike. Very handy indeed.
Parent 3: Very effective, yes. Especially in doing projects, teachers would just tell them to
photocopy the lesson. So, they can do that efficiently. For example, printers in their house could
help them print out assignments to read and study. That’s why I find it very effective to the
children today.
Karen: So, they can really reinforce their learning in a way that it provides ways to learn with
less difficulty and that’s instructional material. And that’s it thank you. God bless!
INTERVIEW WITH STUDENTS
 Being a student, what can you say about the Science Education today?
Louis: Science education today for me is very advance but given that it is science, it is very
difficult. It’s very difficult for me because there’s a lot of technical words and terms. If you didn’t
know the basics you will never understand the complex parts.
Gaubin: Science education today, i think its improving as the generation goes by. It’s improving
in terms of technology. When it comes to learning process of the students and it is also helps
students to be critically thinker. It is because of the advancement of how teachers cater
education base on the student’s needs. So i can say the science education today is more
obliged to technology.
Carl Jason: Being a student I can say that there are lot of innovations that science education
had, especially in instructional materials cause teachers don’t just explain concepts in science
but we do experiments and we also create visual aids during our reports and present laboratory
apparatus in the class.
Jaynard: Based on what I’ve experienced when I was in high school. I think we are just an
experimentation done by the government since we are the pioneering students of the K-12
curriculum and scientific method? Ow what was in the question, science..? Ah yes, science
education it was like, it was just included in our curriculum and make as like a guinea pigs. So
that they will know whether it is effective when we are in college and in the future.
Jackielyn: Now in the K-12? Ahhm its nice ‘te because it is advance. For me since my strand
was STEM, they can choose subjects that focuses on math and science . then in science they
have chem, bio, and physics so at least they will be advance.

 What can you suggest to enhance the implementation of science curriculum?

Louis:
Gaubin: It is improving but there are problems and there are lapses especially on how teachers
cater the need of the student’s rural and urban areas. There are not prone to educational
devices and they are not aware of educational advancement. We can really compare the
students in the rural and urban areas. They are different when it comes to equipments,
buildings, materials, school materials, and even teachers are different. Some of them were
condemned with seminars.
Carl Jason: Maybe in our school, it needs to be more focus on field work, not only inside the
classroom or laboratory because that is what really happened lately, it is really frequent.
Although students are already engaged on experimentations and hands on activities—it also
needs to incorporate outside sa school that has field work for students to make.
Jaynard: Uhm. One of the problems in our strand is that we do not have references, we do not
have modules. That is why what my teacher did was to asks a copy for references from their
co-senior high school teachers. So, the government must really add references such as books,
modules then syllabus so that it will be more effective.
Jackielyn: Well for us ‘te, teacher. Of course, there is an additional 2 years so there are lack
of teachers that is why the one who teaches us are only part-timers. So there is a lack of
teachers.
 In your perspective, what way do you think would the concept in science is learned best
by the student?
Louis: Maybe the type of method used by the teacher and their teaching strategies. Because
some of the teachers were too technical. Some of the teacher must teach they students well,
like they can implement a learner-centered method in the classroom situation.
Gaubin: I think there are different kinds of learners. There are learners who can easily learn
through videos. There are learners who can easily learn through pictures. I can say that
teachers should provide strategies. They should encourage students to be involved in direct
experiences like experimentation. Not always about chalk and talk , like traditional way of
teaching. Today’s teacher should provide strategies that are very learner-centered. We can
really see students participating and engaging with the discussion. Teacher must make the
classroom situation more interactive, in order to avoid boring moments. It should be
entertaining.
Carl Jason: Maybe when they do certain activities or partly engage in doing activities in
science such as experiment, research, like SIP or Sience investigatory project, creating
projects. The students will understand it more because they will not just memorize or
understand the subject but they can internalize because it is done hands-on. Although they
didn’t memorize it they can still recall it because they are able to experience it. Because we all
know that experience is the best teacher, right?
Jaynard: It really depends on the teacher’s style. It should be student-centered or teacher-
centered but it is much nice to have teacher-centered because students will do nothing except
sitting and listening.
Jackielyn: Like practical activities for example in chem. Do experiments because in
experiments we can really see what happen, like reactions for example. I learn more if the
students will be the one to perform and the teacher will only guide. So that if ever it will fail they
can redo it. Hands-on activities.
 How helpful are the instructional materials in learning science concepts?
Louis: Yes, because the way of teaching will be different and the perception of the students
will also vary. Through those IM’s their participation will be driven.
Gaubin: Yes, because the way of teaching will be different and the perception of the students
will also vary. Through those IM’s their participation will be driven.
Carl Jason: It has an importance, there’s actually a really big difference if one used
instructional material and without instructional material it because if you do not use instructional
material, the students have different perspectives so for example when you are discussing the
parts of the microscope how can the students find out what is the parts of a microscope if there
is no instructional material, because students- we have multiple intelligences and as a teacher
you have to address that, you have this instructional material because it is really helpful
specially to those students who can easily adopt new knowledge through visual and spatial.
Jaynard: Ow, yes it is very useful. There is a big gap having and not having it. Like a soldier,
if a soldier doesn’t have weapons, it is not effective.
Jackielyn: It is not very confusing. If there is no material it is much confusing because of the
letters.it is more easy to remember if you can actually see a materials.
 What are the existing Ims used in teaching electron configuration?
Louis: Yes, there is. Even though our school is not that advance, like the others, but we still
have instructional materials like T.V. There are also models. But the problem is, in my years of
staying there, I never had a chance to use any of it. It was just for display.
Gaubin: All materials should be accessible to all learners. No matter your gender, even if you
are having disabilities. I should suggest that 5:26.
Carl Jason: Charts, Illustration, using technology like computers and audios. Like that
Jaynard: References. None, like human anatomy? Ahmm, none, just imagination. If you talk
about experiments yes we have but in the laboratory but only for junior high school because
we do not have our own laboratory so basically we only imagine. Ahmm, In periodic table of
elements it is found in the bottom, right? We also draw.
Jackielyn: Periodic table. There are circles that still demonstrate how to remember it. And
sometimes they make us make our mnemonics for us to remember it. Like for example, in terms
of reporting our teacher uses apps wherein we are able to see what happens even if we are
not actually doing it. Like in Physics, he uses an app that makes us see everything that needed
to happen. Sometimes, he also present videos. I forgot the App but I think its PHET. He projects
it and sometimes he brings his own things. Like for example in our chem about the topic
structure which we will connect. And in pendulum. Like science materials.
 How effective are those instructional materials in the mastery of the concept?
Louis: It will be a help in making the concept easier in the minds of the students. Like for
periodic table, you can used your photographic memory to familiarize the structure of it.
Gaubin: Very effective. It is really effective because…specially with those student who learn
from audio visual presentation like charts.. yeah it’s very effective.
Carl Jason: It is really important especially in using the videos and explain the topic and create
activity for us students wherein we will make or perform our own experiment. Like, we will be
the one who will make all the “kadramahan” for a particular topic.
Jaynard: Actually, we were told to memorize those but we weren’t able to recite it. It will also
be effective in a way that it is the only resources that we get. So you don’t have a choice but to
memorize it.
Jackielyn: It is more effective. It can be easily remembered and absorb and it catches the
students attention which will not bore them. Science is hard, right? Others might find it boring
and they fine it hard. But if there is a instructional material they wouldn’t think that it is hard and
it will make them listen more until they totally get the lesson. Because it will only be discussed
verbally it takes time to learn.
INTERVIEW WITH SCIENCE TEACHERS
**NOTE: Teachers weren’t able to answer the questions due to the time-constraint and
activities in their school (Homeroom GPTA meeting) during our interview. However, few
specific questions was posed and responses that were procured.

Are you using instructional materials in teaching?

Teacher 1: Yes, we are using them.
Teacher 2: Yes.
Teacher 3: Yes.

Have you taught electron configuration?

Teacher 1: Yes, actually we are teaching them the topic recently.
Teacher 2. No, since we don’t have that in Grade 10. I think it’s in Grade 11, Senior High School.
Teacher 3: Yes, in Grade 9. But actually, I don’t often teach that since I can only teach when
teachers are on leave or aren’t in their class. I’m only an implementing teacher.

What are the existing instructional materials use in teaching electron configuration?
Teacher 1: Periodic table. It’s always used. Mnemonics and, of course, video tutorials about
that are also being used.
Teacher 2: Well, periodic table.
Teacher 3: Ahmm well, I am not very particular with that. But same old, periodic table is
employed.
