One of the biggest challenges came from the moisture levels as the area has an average annual
rainfall of 4200mm. The saturated soil complicates the construction process on many levels,
including stabilisation and compaction.
However this heavy moisture content in the soil is a constant, which handles road building work in
the area. There is seldom time for the soil to dry, as there are 247 rainy days per year. In addition,
some areas receive only five hours of sunshine each day, making the soil heavy.
Two typical representatives of tropical soils are the lateritic and bauxitic soils. Laterite is a surface
product that occurs frequently in tropical areas, caused by intense and long-lasting weathering of
the underlying rocks. A very similar rock, however, with lower iron / hematite content is called
bauxite, there is a continuous transition between the two rocks of possible chemical compositions.
The rocks on the earth's surface are decomposed profoundly under the influence of the high
temperatures and precipitation of the tropics, whereby the minerals occurring in the parent rocks
are largely dissolved. In this chemical weathering, a high proportion of the more soluble elements
sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium and silicon (silica) in the percolating rain water is
continued, resulting in a strong residue enrichment of the less soluble elements iron and
aluminum (ferrallitization).
2
Laterites, in addition to the quartz, which originates from the source rock, are composed mainly of
the minerals kaolinite, goethite, hematite and gibbsite (hydrargillite) newly formed during weathe-
ring. The iron oxides goethite and hematite cause the mostly reddish brown color of the laterites,
which are usually only a few meters thick, but can also reach much higher thicknesses.
Due to the mineralogical and chemical composition of the soils show a strong change in their
plasticity and thus their carrying capacity with water addition or absorption. Over the last few
years, the example of numerous construction projects in the tropics has shown that EvoCrete
successfully solves and masters the problems associated with the stabilization and transformati-
on of these soil types into bearing / base layers.
Using the example of some construction projects from India and Malaysia, we would like to
document the performance of our products and processes.
