The following are some of the main characteristics of an effective teacher. An effective teacher;

Sets clear objectives. Before the lesson commences, an effective teacher sets clear objectives. In combination to
having these objectives documented in both the lesson plan and scheme of work, the teacher ensures that the
learners are aware of these objectives. This will guide the teacher on which methods and aids needed to achieve
the set objectives. Michelle Shields holds that Learning Objectives are the nerve center of teaching as they give a
purpose to learning. They form the basis for lesson planning and it is upon these objectives that the success of the
lesson is evaluated. (Harry & Rosemary Wong special to the Gazette March 2011) Michelle goes on to say,
“Objectives ensure learning is focused so students have a sense of purpose to learning and know what is expected
of them.”

Utilizes the available resources. While planning and implementing the lesson delivery, an effective teacher
considers the available resources to suit the methods they are going to use. Resources should be available to
facilitate instruction. However, many schools in developing countries lack adequate resources. Thus a teacher has
to improvise and above all exploit the meager resources and materials at his disposal. "Even if you have a pre-
determined schedule, talk with your colleagues when you have an assignment coming up that will require using
the shared resources. Otherwise, you'll never know if another teacher is willing to trade days or compromise to
help you and your students. If you don't have a pre-determined schedule, talking with colleagues will ensure that
they understand your need and that you understand theirs." (Miriam Plotinsky January 21, 2020)

Keeps abreast with current trends. The field of education witnesses changes almost every moment. These
changes range from technological advances to environment and stakeholder expectations. An effective teacher
thus, has got to be ready to continue learning and adapt to the changing trends in the education sector. Our concern
should not be whether integration of technology in the classroom is important or not, but how we can use new
technologies to transform our styles of teaching, Angela Watson(https://thecornerstoneforteachers.com/6-keys-

Ensures learner involvement. Owing to the fact that a teacher's main role is to facilitate learning, an effective
teacher fully knows that effective learning cannot take place if learners are not actively involved in lesson
development. Class participation is critical to student learning because they learn to express themselves in such a
way that others can comprehend. In the same breath, they get to know how to obtain information, which also helps
the teacher to examine their level of understanding of the topic. (Dr. Ken Shore’s, problem solver)
