ACADIMIC STRESS

CHAPTER 3
Research Methodology
This chapter present the research methodology of the study. It includes discussion

on the research design, research environment, population and sampling (research

respondents and sampling technique), instrumentation, data gathering techniques and

statistical treatment.

Research Design

The research design would be used in this study is/are the descriptive research

design, It explain/describe the status of an identified variable such as events, people, or

subjects as they exist. Eventually we use the survey methods of descriptive research

design. Survey methods is one of the most common source of quantitative research data

when human participants are involved. This method aimed to determine academic stress

of the G-12 TVL students in MVTS.

Research Environment

This study was conducted at the Molave Vocational Technical School – Senior

High School (MVTS-SHS Building campus 1) in Mabini Street, Barangay Maloloy-on,

Molave, Zamboanga del Sur. The school offered two tracks for Senior High School

namely; Academic Track and Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL) Track. In

Academic Track, MVTS offers four strands such as Science Technology Engineering and

Mathematics (STEM), Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS), Accountancy and

Business Management (ABM) and General Academic Strand (GAS). In TVL track,
MVTS offers Information Communication Technology (ICT), Industrial Arts (IA), and

Home Economics (HE).

Research Respondents

The respondents of the study were the Molave Vocational Technical

School- Senior High School (MVTS- SHS), G-12 Technical Vocational Livelihood

(TVL) students. They were given an individual survey questionnaire with the same

questions to gather information. The researchers used the systematic random sampling

technique in choosing and selecting the respondents to be used in the conduct of data

gathering.
Sampling Techniques

The researcher used Slovin’s formula in order to know the number of samples

taken from a population. These samples would serve as respondents throughout the

conduct of data gathering procedure.

𝑁
𝑛=
1 + 𝑁 (𝑒)²

Where:

N- The total number of population

n- The number of samples from a population
e- The marginal error (5% will be use)

For percentage computation is:

𝑿
%=𝑵

Where:

X = the total number of the students per section

N = the total number of population in G-12 TVL SHS

G-12TVL2 47 12% 24
G-12TVL3 47 12% 24
G-12TVL4 44 11% 22
G-12TVL5 46 11% 22
G-12TVL6 47 12% 24
G-12TVL7 45 11% 22
G-12TVL8 44 11% 22
G-12 TVL 9 41 10% 20

TOTAL(N)= 408 TOTAL(n)= 202

In identifying the respondents, it uses the stratified random sampling

techniques where the researchers randomly pick students to answer the prepared

questionnaires. The researcher used sloven’s formula to get the sample size of

respondents.

Instrumentation

The researchers used a self-constructed instrument to gather data through a

survey. The survey questionnaire composed of 13 close-ended questions. The

respondents were asked to indicate the extent of their academic stress using 4-point Liker

scale: (4) strongly agree, (3) agree, (2) disagree, (1) strongly disagree.

Data Gathering Techniques

During the data collection procedure, the researcher would make the letter

addressed to the school and approved by principal and assistant principal of the school to
ask permission regarding the conduct of the study. After the approval the researcher

would then be ask the teacher permission to conduct the study to her/his students. After

which, the researcher would select the students randomly in every section to participate

the study. The researcher would give first the purpose of the study of why they are the

chosen respondents to represent the study and would give the instructions carefully how

to do it to avoid miss understanding. The researcher would assist the respondents upon

filling in the necessary details. If the respondents have queries about the matter the

researcher is there to answer it. Afterwards, the research would gather interview

questions for insightful interpretations. After each respondents answered the questions,

researchers are not allowed to reveal any data and that confidentiality must be

maintained. Data gathered from the said survey are being checked, evaluated, tabulated

and analyzed for final presentation.

Statistical Treatment

The data gathered from the questionnaires after the conduct of the survey were

carefully tallied and recorded by the researchers. The data are analyzed and results are

obtained with the use of measures of central tendency and inferential statistical tools.

Results are also presented through the use of graphical presentation.
