Chapter I

Introduction

The Environmental Crisis is really a crisis of consciousness. Most people know the

natural world is facing great challenges and degradation, but few know the true extents

of the changes and deprivation the environment faces and its extended effects on human

welfare and all other life on Earth. There is a great gap between the multitude of problems

the environment faces on all fronts and the level of awareness most people have on these

issues. During this critical period of human history, our generation has been given the

urgent task of reversing the damages of industrial civilization and overcoming perhaps

the greatest challenge humanity has ever faced - uniting as one conscious, sustainable

force to secure the stability of our future environmentally, economically, and socially, for

we cannot trash the planet, destroy its biodiversity, alter the climate, and continue living

off the wealth of future generations without condemning ourselves and the basis of our

civilization in the process. Environmentalism has become a broader, unifying human

issue where every living system in the biosphere is in a constant, accelerated decline.

Candelaria is a landlocked municipality in the coastal province of Quezon. The

municipality has a land area of 129.10 square kilometers or 49.85 square miles which

constitutes 1.44% of

Quezon's total area. Its

population as determined by

the 2015 Cens us was

117,434. This represented

6.33% of the total population

of Quezon province, or

0.81% of the overall population of the CALABARZON region. Based on these figures, the

population density is computed at 910 inhabitants per square kilometer or 2,356

inhabitants per square miles.

Candelaria is drained by three major rivers: Masin, Quiapo and Taguan, where

several small creeks branch out. These rivers also serve as the natural boundaries of the

barangays within the municipality and also the neighboring municipalities.

The River systems within the municipality originate from Mount Banahaw and flow down

to the MalaquingIlog River at the southern boundary of the municipality, which eventually

flows out to the Tayabas Bay. Other rivers include Pansol, Guhit, Palos, Mamala,

Mangilag Sur, Bacong, Tiaong, Madre Estaquia, Tilarog and Mangalang. In Barangay

MasalukotIV,there is an intermittent river that dries up during the dry, hot summer months

of March to May. Other rivers in the municipality are Langalanga, Pritil, Anito, Matakmil,

EdesBulusan, Yamot, Mantika, Bukol, Bonabohar, Timtimon, Sipit, and Bega. Springs

and falls are also present in Candelaria, such as Adarna, Pansol and Mabitin springs and

the Guhit and Poles falls.

However, the primary rivers of the municipality have become polluted due to

wastes that were thrown into those rivers. Boulders and rocks are seen on the river beds

of the intermittent river systems, which could be transported downstream when rainwater

flows through these systems during heavy downpours. Springs and streams serve as

potential sources of potable water for Candelaria and could be developed for tourism.

According to Barangay officials, upland erosion and pollution from both domestic and

industrial wastes has contributed immensely to the deterioration of river water quality and

deforestation in the slopes of Mt. Banahaw where the river’s headwaters emanate has

allegedly caused extreme reduction in water discharge. There are five coconut processing

plants in Candelaria. At present, Barangay officials claim that the river is no longer being

tapped for irrigation, bathing and other domestic uses.

Water, critical to sustaining human life, is public property that everyone should

have the right to access. Water has several characteristics. Once water is polluted, it

needs time to recover (the "long-term impact"), and is impossible to restore a damaged

water environment to its original state no matter what actions are taken ("irreversibility").

Local pollution has the potential to spread via water and have a transnational impact.

.Water pollution is a serious environmental issue. Water is said to be polluted if its

physical, biological, and chemical properties are deteriorated via anthropogenic and

natural activities. Water pollution has affected the lives of humans and animals in all

aspects. Water pollution is very hazardous to the environment.

The biological or chemical change in the quality of water due to the presence of

contaminants in water is called water pollution. Most of this contamination as on date is

due to various human activities. In fact, humans are responsible for the mass deaths of

whales and other aquatic organisms often swept ashore at different beaches in the world.

There is an urgent need to look into the measures to control water pollution although a

lot many efforts and schemes have already been announced by the Government in this

regard. To make the students aware of this we have prepared short and long essays for

students which shall inform them about water pollution and the means to minimise it.

Air pollution refers to the presence of polluting substances in the air we breathe.

There are a number of air pollutants resulting from different human activities. For

example, use of fossil fuels for transportation and other purposes, releases gases like

Carbon dioxide (CO2), Carbon monoxide (CO) and Sulphur dioxide (SO2). These gases,

when emitted in large quantities, pollute the air, making it harmful to breathe. Similarly,

the air may contain radioactive pollutants from a radioactive leak; particulate matters etc.

Air Pollution, beyond a certain limit, could be seriously damaging to the health and habitat

of flora, fauna and humans. There is an urgent need to control the air pollution by

effectively implementing new policies and laws for environmental protection.

Such polluted air is causing health problems, diseases and death. Air pollution is one of

the most important environmental issues which requires to be noticed and solved by the

efforts of all of us.

Garbage has become a serious problem in the world today. According to a report

published in Nature journal, the problem of garbage or solid waste is assuming terrible

proportions today. By the end of this century (2100,), garbage will be collected at the rate

of 11 million tonnes per day globally, more than three times today’s rate. It implies that

the garbage-generation which amounted to 3.5 million tonnes per day in 2010 will become

6 million tonnes per day by 2025. At present, people of India produce about 62 million

tonnes of solid-waste annually. Out of this, 45 million tonnes of the garbage are left

untreated and disposed of by civic agencies in an unscientific manner.

Argument no. 1

The condition of Quiapo River in the dam site at Brgy. Pahinga Norte
Chapter II

Body

The problem began when some factories were established in Candelaria Quezon,

and one of those is the Peter Paul Corporation in which covered by Pahinga Norte.

Pahinga Norte is one of the barangays here in Candelaria Quezon wherein the main

problem is the factory’s emitting smoke that causes air pollution into their barangay and

also the pile waste that’s been dumped into the river of Quiapo. Today the Quiapo river

is now contaminated with various types of waste, aside from the factory the people who

where also living along the river threw their waste into the river. While the researchers

were passing by the river of Quiapo they detect the smell of a rotten-egg which is very

unpleasant to inhale. According to UK Environmental Law Association, offensive odors

and smells also contribute to the level of air pollution in our local communities. They may

be harmful to our health and affect the use and enjoyment of property. Since the river is

contaminated there’s no living thing into that river due to the dumped waste and it is not

good to take a dip in there. According to their Captain, aside from the factory their main

problem was the people who were living along the river but not just there but in their whole

barangay because people does not have discipline.

Chapter III

Conclusion

When it comes to segregation of wastes, we all know that the people do not

know the proper way of throwing in other words they were lack of discipline. So the best

way to lessen the dumped waste on the river and in the other public places is have

some discipline.

The captain of their barangay and his people does not lack at reminding his

extent, instead they gave leaflets about segregation of waste and they make sure that

the waste will be collected by the garbage collector.

When it comes between their barangay and the accumulated waste in the river

and also the factory, is that they made an ordinance to ensure that their river will be

safe with hazardous chemicals that the factory produces. To reduce the water flood to

spread throughout the barangay, they are also implementing tree planting programs to

ensure that the water will not rise up during storms.
