helped me in doing a lot of research and I came to know about so many new

things I am really thankful to them.

Secondly, I would also like to thank my parents and friends who helped

me a lot in finalizing this project within the limited time frame.

DEDICATION

We dedicate this research paper to our family, friends, and other people

who help us and inspired us for this project. They have given us the drive and

discipline to tackle a task with enthusiast and determination. Without their

support this project would not have been made possible.

And also, we dedicate this research to some people who experience

bullying and those who bully other people so that they know we should not hurt

others physically, emotionally or spiritually.

Abstract

Bullying refers to aggressive behavior that is repetitive and intentional in

which a power differential exists between the victim and bully. The negative

effects of bullying on an individual's mental and physical health are substantial

and in line with other major forms of child maltreatment. Efforts to increase

detection of bullying are indicated, especially among youth presenting with

school phobia, depression, anxiety, and declining school performance. Several

antibullying efforts have been developed and promoted at the school and

community level. Research indicates that many of these programs are effective

and share some common elements that can help reduce the prevalence and

impact of bullying.
Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Rationale

Bullying is the use of force, coercion, or threat, to abuse, aggressively

dominate or intimidate. The behavior is often repeated and habitual. One

essential prerequisite is the perception (by the bully or by others) of an

imbalance of physical or social power. This imbalance distinguishes bullying

from conflict. Bullying is a subcategory of aggressive behavior characterized by

the following three minimum criteria:

(1) Hostile intent

(2) Imbalance of power

(3) Repetition over a period of time.

Bullying is the activity of repeated, aggressive behavior intended to hurt

another individual, physically, mentally, or emotionally. Bullying ranges from

one-on-one, individual bullying through to group bullying, called mobbing, in

which the bully may have one or more "lieutenants" who are willing to assist the

primary bully in their bullying activities.

In United Kingdom, as always, 50% of the report benchmarks bullying

behaviors, with the remainder of the survey this year exploring the bystanders

to bullying. We wanted to measure the impact that bullying has on those who
witness it, along with tracking if, how and why people intervene, along with a

measurement of what happened as a result of intervention. This research

enables us to bridge the gap when it comes to empowering bystanders to

intervene in safe and impactful ways (Label, 2018).

This year, we surveyed over 9,000 young people aged 12-20 in

partnership with schools and colleges from across the country. Our free report

has thousands of the latest bullying statistics and fully explores the real lived

experiences of those who are victimized, those who perpetrate and those who

witness bullying. Included in the report is the following:

• Key bullying statistics in the UK

• The motivations of bullying

• Frequency and nature of bullying experienced

• The impact of bullying

• Rates of young people bullying others

• Rationale behind the perpetration of bullying

• The extent and nature of witnessing bullying

• How young people intervene when they witness bullying

• Recommendations

• Real stories and experiences

In the Philippines, a survey conducted revealed that bullying or abuse

is experienced by one in two Filipino school children. This was backed up with

an Australian newspaper stating that 50 percent of Filipino students are being

bullied in school. Also, the students in the Philippines had led the record of

different types of bullying which include being made fun of or being called

names, left out of activities by others and made to do things the student did not

want to (Ancho & Park, 2013).

In Davao City Health Office, also reported that bullying in school is a

major concern since it exists in almost every school there is in Davao City. This

unwanted act is prevalent not only in private educational institutions but also in

public schools. The Office encouraged the Department of Education to also look

into their backyards and do what is necessary (Sumalinog, 2015).

In the school where the researcher is assigned, report of bullying

incidence is very evident and alarming because of its high frequency. Every

week, a lot of cases are settled in the office of prefect of discipline and guidance

office. Worst cases are brought to the principal‘s office. I find it disturbing on the

part of the adviser and the concerned subject teacher every time that there are

problems with bullying which needed to be settled.

Thus, this study was conducted in order to have a deeper understanding

about the experiences of students about bullying in the school and that

somehow it will soon be addressed. Besides, there is no existing study

conducted in the Cluster 6 Tugbok Secondary Schools, Davao City (Ancho &

Park, 2013).
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Bullying is when people repeatedly and intentionally use words or actions

against someone or a group of people to cause distress and risk to their

wellbeing. These actions are usually done by people who have more influence

or power over someone else, or who want to make someone else feel less

powerful or helpless.

Bullying is not the same as conflict between people (like having a fight) or

disliking someone, even though people might bully each other because of

conflict or dislike. The sort of repeated behavior that can be considered bullying

includes:

 Keeping someone out of a group (online or offline)

 Acting in an unpleasant way near or towards someone

 Giving nasty looks, making rude gestures, calling names, being rude and

impolite, and constantly negative teasing.

 Spreading rumors or lies, or misrepresenting someone (i.e. using their

Facebook account to post messages as if it were them)

 Mucking about that goes too far

 Harassing someone based on their race, sex, religion, gender or a

disability

 Intentionally and repeatedly hurting someone physically

 Intentionally stalking someone

 Taking advantage of any power over someone else like a Prefect or a

Student Representative.
Bullying can happen anywhere. It can be in schools, at home, at work,

in online social spaces, via text messaging or via email. It can be physical,

verbal, emotional, and it also includes messages, public statements and

behavior online intended to cause distress or harm (also known as

cyberbullying). But no matter what form bullying takes, the results can be

the same: severe distress and pain for the person being bullied.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of qualitative case study is to further our knowledge of

bullying among fellow students at school, what effects it has on our health

(mental or physical) and to understand why we experience of abuse of a child

or student.

In addition, this research is an instrument for promoting bullying

programs or advocacy. To reduce cases of bullying in our country and no one

will experience the abuse of physical, mental or spiritual abuse.

Lastly, to help victims of bullying and to save them from the nightmares

they experienced when they were being abused by others and to encourage

their fellow victims of bullying even in small ways such as speaking, explaining

and hearing their opinions or experiences.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

1. What is campus bullying experiences of high school students?

2. What are the realizations and insights the students learned?

3. What are the reasons why a student is bullied?

4. What are the factors why did a child or a person do such things

like bullying?
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study examined the various experiences of harassment on campus,

including its causes and implications on the perpetrators, their processes and

perspectives gained. Participant’s experiences will serve as reminders for all

students, educators, family, and the entire community to be aware of the

negative impact of bullying on survivors as well as bullies.

Through this research, it is possible to discover preventive measures

that can reduce, if not eradicate, harassment within the premises of the

university. Findings from this research could lead to a better understanding of

campus bullying that would allow school administrators, guidance counselors,

teacher advisors, and subject teachers to devise policies to address the

problem. Once bullying is dealt with carefully, students may be motivated to

learn and academic standings may eventually be improved.

DELIMITATION

This research is based on students experiencing the violence of fellow

students. The scope of this study is limited and is within the school of Saint

Jude Academy of Mindanao Foundation Inc. This study is presented by Grade

10 Francis students consisting of 8 people in a group. As an academic

research, researchers are doing this to solve the problem of the topic they are

working on.

This research is limited due to the lack of sufficient capacity to do this

research. They may not be able to explain this research well because of their

age but the researchers are trying their best to make and complete this study.
LIMITATION

The limitation of this research is the lack of information gathering that

focuses on Grade 7 students experiencing bullying. Most children experience

bullying especially during this time. It may be on social media, personal, verbal

or sexual. Researchers still need a lot of information to find out what it takes to

stop the bullying crisis.
