DR Solution is done today remains a challenging and complex task. This is primarily due to
several underlying issues associated with recovering an application at another physical location
with all the associated compute, storage and networking constructs. Existing solutions such as
SRM faithfully recover Compute and Storage reliably in an automated fashion, but networking
continues to be tied to underlying physical infrastructure. This tie‐in with the physical
infrastructure causes the following operational and deployment challenges:
• Replicating Layer 2 and Layer 3 network topology across different physical devices at the
target and recovery sites
• Replicating security policies across the two datacentres
• Reliance on physical IP address in creating policies
• Re‐mapping IP address leads to re‐writing the associated policies .
• Preserving IP address across the datacentre requires the use of L2 Extension technologies
such as Cisco Overlay Transport Virtualization (OTV), or industry standard Virtual Private LAN
Services (VPLS) configured generally on the WAN Router – thus, the application’s Layer‐2
domain is exposed from the rack to the DataCenter WAN edge

Partial Application Failover – Only a part of application failed over from Protected to
Recovery site. The application components on the Protected and Recovery site continue to
function and communicate as before.
Full Application Failover – Entire application failed over from the Protected site to the
Recovery site .
Site Failure – The entire site has failed including NSX components at the protected site. The
application and NSX components are recovered at the recovery site

SRM

• vSphere Distributed switch on both Sites.
• External PSC for vCenter for Cross‐VC NSX.
• It is recommended to have Both site's vCenters in linked mode so that they can be managed
from Single web page.
• A user with admin rights to deploy & integrate NSX and its components with vCenter.
• MTU size 1600 or more across the physical network infra connected to vSphere.
• RTT should be less than 150 ms across the sites.
• Database for SRM.
• Windows server on each site for SRM installation.
• Storage replication from HO to DR and vice‐versa.
• vSphere version should be minimum 6.0 update 3, however it is recommended to have
vSphere version 6.5

SRM*: SRM requires 2 GB of RAM along with 2vCPU’s and 40 GB of HDD and rest is dependent on OS.
For Eg: For SRM, in the above table we assumed 2GB RAM (OS) + 2GB RAM(SRM), 2 vCPU(OS) + 2
vCPU(SRM) and 40 GB(SRM) + 85 GB (OS)

Responsibilities
All Esconet and Customer responsibilities are listed in the Service Deliverables
section. The ownership is defined as follows:
• Primary Owner
Esconet: Esconet is responsible for delivery of the component, with minimal assistance
from the customer’s project team.
• Joint:
Esconet and the Customer’s project team are jointly responsible for delivery of the
component.
• Primary Owner
CUSTOMER: Esconet is responsible for assisting the Customer project team as needed
to deliver the component.
• Project Timeline
Minimum timeline for this project will be 4 weeks from the date of implementation
starts. Time line may increase in subject to challenges in existing environment or
Customer readiness and availability of both the Customer and the deployments team.
