When was the last time
you planned a family trip
that involved spending a lot

would take. Now to put this
all into a proper perspective,
just think how much it would
cost each time the President
left the White House on a
trip overseas. Be it official
business or personal, it still
will cost the taxpayers a
lot of money. According

his faith, President Obama
has apparently been told by
his advisors to ratchet up
the Jesus talk. So at a staged
event in Albuquerque, New
Mexico, Obama complied by
responding to a question about
why he became a Christian.
“I came to my Christian
faith later in life and it was
because the precepts of Jesus
Christ spoke to me in terms
of the kind of life that I would
want to lead,” he explained,
adding he was moved by
the thought of, “Being my
brothers’ and sisters’ keeper.”
One has to wonder
whether such an answer was
really what his advisors were
wanting. After all, who would
ever suggest the president use
the Biblical phrase, “being
my brothers’ keeper,” when
his actual half-brother (blood
related) resides in a shack in
Kenya?
If I may be so bold, I think
this strained proclamation of
faith by the President is far
more about a Machiavellian
manipulation of the masses
(trying to convince people he’s
something that he’s not) than
it is about a devotion to the
teachings of Christ. In other
words, I call bull.
Anyone who has actually
studied and taken the ‘precepts
of Jesus’ to heart knows that
Jesus taught us to be personally
charitable. This is fitting with
Christ’s testimony that his was
not a political kingdom, but a
spiritual one (John 18:36). He
came not to conquer earthly
thrones, but the human heart.
Yet false teachers like
Obama seek to confuse
that point. They tell us that
obedience to christ comes

treasure in heaven. Then come,
follow me.” (Matthew 19:21)
Jesus did not say: “If you
want to be perfect, go, get
elected to high office and then
use the law to confiscate the
property of those who have,
and give to those you deem
more worthy of it. Then claim
you are following me.”
You get the point. Barack
Obama’s social gospel of
government sponsored theft is
a flat contradiction to what
Jesus taught.
So keeping in mind another
Biblical precept that “by their
fruits you will know them”
(Matthew 7:16), perhaps it’s
time to put Mr. Obama’s fruits
on trial against the actual

gave 77 percent of his income
to charity.”
In other words, while Mr.
Obama is very interested in
being charitable with your
money, he’s pretty stingy
with his own. While you may
find that in the teachings of
Marx, you won’t find it in the
precepts of Jesus.
As I watch Mr. Obama’s
persistently arrogant,
sanctimonious sermonizing to
a nation of citizens far more
personally charitable than
him, there’s another phrase of
Christ that comes to mind.
Perhaps the President would
be wise to familiarize himself
with it...whitewashed tomb.

Take Steps to Help
“Immunize” Your Portfolio
Now that winter is almost here, you probably see “Flu Shots
Available” signs at many of your local pharmacies. Whether or not
you decide to get a flu shot depends on your individual situation,
of course, but you may benefit from the idea of immunization in
other areas of your life — such as your investments.
Specifically, you may want to help “immunize” your portfolio,
as much as possible, against some of the volatility we’ve seen in
the financial markets over the past couple of years. How can you
do this? Here are a few suggestions:
• Diversify, diversify, diversify. If you were to only own stocks,
your portfolio would, at times, see some big gains — but at other
times, you’d take some big hits. If you just owned bonds, you’d
probably see fewer fluctuations than if you just owned stocks
— but you’d almost certainly never get the gains you need
to help achieve your goals. If you kept all your money in cash
instruments, you’d protect your principal, but you’d eventually lose
ground to inflation. In short, you can’t succeed as an investor by
putting all your money in one type of asset. You need to spread
your resources among stocks, bonds, and cash investments.
And even within each of these categories, you need to diversify.
For example, try to own a mixture of growth stocks and income-
producing stocks; short-term and long-term bonds; and a variety of
cash instruments. While diversification, by itself, can’t guarantee
profits or protect against loss, it can give you opportunities for
potential success and help shield you from severe downturns that,
at any given time, primarily affect just one asset class.
• Know your risk tolerance. If you frequently find yourself
surprised, or perhaps dismayed, at the fluctuations in your
portfolio, you may be overestimating your risk tolerance. If you
familiarize yourself with your investments before you buy them
— and you should — then you probably shouldn’t be surprised
at how they perform. So, if you own growth-oriented stocks, you
need to accept the inevitable short-term volatility in exchange for
potential gains over the long term. But if you’re constantly worried
over temporary setbacks, you may be taking on too much risk for
your comfort level. If this happens, you may need to rebalance
your portfolio to better accommodate your true risk tolerance.
• Maintain adequate cash reserves. Having sufficient cash in
your portfolio can help you combat volatility in at least two ways.
First, since cash essentially doesn’t fluctuate in price — though it
may lose value over time, relative to inflation — its very presence
can help stabilize your portfolio. And second, if you have enough
cash in your investment mix, you may be less likely to dip into
your long-term investments to pay for short-term needs, such
as a major car repair, a new furnace and so on — and the less
you disrupt your investments, the more progress you can make
toward your goals.
It’s not possible to fully shield your investments from volatility
all the time. But by taking the steps described above, and by
maintaining a long-term perspective, you can strengthen your
portfolio’s resistance, and improve your own responses, to the
effects of price fluctuations. And that’s a healthy way to invest.

down while trying to

stop the clock. I know
neither kid, nor their
names, but can appreci-
ate how they probably
feel. I have seen lot of
other kids in similar
situations. Every athlete
makes mistakes. It is
unfortunate some make
their miscues at the
worst possible time, in
the bright light of
center stage. Now is
the time for coaches,
parents, and fans to let

The regular meeting
of St. Rochus Auxiliary
#288 Knight’s of St. John
was held on November 22
with 41 members present.
Cocktails were served at
6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30.
The meeting followed with

for the evening. The rosary
was recited for all members
in hospitals and nursing
homes, John and Madonna

club had the installation of
officers for the 2011 year.

– Lauren Wenning, and
reporter – Carol Westgerdes.
It was reported that the
Halloween party was a huge
success, and a thank you was
given to the Wenning family
for hosting the event.
Under new business, it
was decided that a $5 gift
exchange will take place at
the December meeting.
