Summary:
Fastenings of reinforcing bars or threaded rods made with injection mortar Hilti HIT-RE 500 in
concrete of quality ≥ C20/25 / 2000 psi are durable.
Sustained load (creep) tests at loads above the design or recommended loads show low displacements
for fastening element rebars as well as for HAS threaded rods. In all cases extrapolated displacements up
to 50 years of service life stay within the displacement limits of control anchors or within approval
requirements. This means fastenings with HIT-RE 500 are durable. The creep tests have been done in the
temperature range up to 60°C / 140°F.
In rebar fastening the limitation of crack width is an important aspect. Short- and long-term tests of HIT-
RE 500 based on rebar-specific approval test procedures show fulfilment of the acceptance criteria.
Only for permanent substrate temperatures > 40°C/105°F and rebar sizes ≥ ∅16mm/#5 reduction of
allowable bond strength might be necessary for crack width limitation (contact the Hilti technical service).
A long-term test series to evaluate ultimate tensile loads for threaded rods as well as for rebars fastened
with HIT-RE 500 is still running. After a test period of meanwhile 20 months there is no change either in
ultimate loads or in load-displacement characteristic compared to anchors just after curing.
Fastenings with HIT-RE 500 tested under freeze/thaw conditions passed approval criteria successfully.
This means the mortar can be used for indoor as well as for outdoor applications, if proper material quality
of fastening element will be used, based on environmental conditions. See local approval requirements.
Tests regarding dynamic loading of rebar fastenings made with HIT-RE 500 are ongoing.
First results indicate high dynamic loading capacity of HIT-RE 500 mortar so the dynamic performance of
the fastening elements used will become decisive.
Approval tests for seismic applications have passed the acceptance criteria successfully.
The influence to long-term behaviour of HIT-RE 500 mortar by mediums to which these fastenings are
normally exposed, such as alkalinity, moisture, salts and acid rain, was investigated in several ways and
at several locations. Especially alkalinity, moisture, salt and concrete additives have shown no effect to the
durability of HIT-RE 500 mortar.
A summary of chemical resistance can be seen on page 14 of this report.
Hilti HIT-RE 500 mortar has already be granted by Association Francaise de Normalistion (AFNOR) for
rebar fastening according Marque NF norme P 18-822.
HIT-RE 500 has also passed the requirements based on SOCOTEC France. The “Cahier de Charges” has
been granted for HIT-RE 500 in rebars fastening.
HIT-RE 500 also fulfils all suitability requirements according to ICBO Evaluation Service, Inc. California,
USA, AC58-acceptance criteria for adhesive anchors [13] in case of creep, dampness, freeze/thaw and
seismic for threaded rods as well as for rebar fastenings. ICBO approval process is ongoing.

Rebar applications:
In reinforced concrete construction the load-displacement characteristic and the long-term creep
displacement of post-installed rebars are important regarding crack width limitation.
The French approval authority AFNOR have taken this into account when they specified the acceptance
criteria for post-installed rebars in their Marque NF requirements.
For short-term loading they limited the displacement for rebar of size 12 mm in a 18 mm bore hole at an
embedment depth of 120 mm (= 10 times nominal rebar diameter) at 45 kN load to < 0,6 mm.
Actual results [3] show displacements between 0,11 and 0,14 mm under the above mentioned conditions.
Even with rebar 40 mm at 400 mm embedment depth (10 times rebar diameter) and 433 kN (same bond
strength as for rebar 12mm at 45 kN) this displacement criteria will be fulfilled by HIT-RE 500.
Regarding creep displacement behaviour the Marque NF approval has following test conditions and
acceptance criteria:
Test conditions: rebar 12 mm at 120 mm embedment depth in a ∅18 mm bore hole
concrete quality min 40 MPa; dry or wet (optional)
test load 30 kN at 23 °C - corresponding to a bond strength of 6,6 N/mm2
test duration min. 6 month
Acceptance criteria: total displacement including initial displacement of each anchor < 0,6 mm
displacement in month 4 till 6 of test duration < 0,06 mm
HIT-RE 500 fulfils all acceptance criteria of Marque NF [3]. For actual test data see page 4.
Marque NF approval have been granted at 29.01.01 by AFNOR [4].
In analogy to approval procedure for threaded rod fastenings an extrapolation of creep displacement to
50 years of service life (500.000 h) have also been carried out for rebar fastenings. This extrapolation is
done by the equation s(t) = s o + c x lnt
used in ICBO acceptance criteria [13].
Using this extrapolation to 50 years (500.000 h) the displacement of each anchor stays within the limitation
of approval requirement < 0,6 mm.
The displacements measured in the sustained load tests have to be extrapolated up to 50 years
(500.000 h)
This extrapolation is done either by the equation s(t) = s o + c x lnt
used in ICBO acceptance criteria [13]
or by the Findley approach s(t) = s o + a x tb
used in Guideline for European technical approval (ETAG) [12
Evaluation of requirements for creep behaviour based on ETAG acceptance criteria [12]:
The extrapolated displacements - extrapolation of test data from min. 3 months test duration to 50 years,
including initial and creep displacement - must be less than the average displacements value s u,adh in a
corresponding reference test. s u,adh is the displacement at ultimate tensile load Nu,adh (loss of adhesive
bond).
On page 6 , point 4 and 5 - results - it can be seen , this criteria is clearly fulfilled:
43°C test temperature: average displacement after 55 years = 0,67mm - less than average displacement
at ultimate tension load of control anchors = 1,9 mm
60°C test temperature: average displacement after 55 years = 0,8 mm - less than average displacement at
ultimate tension load of control anchors = 1,6 mm.
Also each individual anchor tested fulfils clearly the above mentioned requirements.
Evaluation of requirements for creep behaviour based on ICBO acceptance criteria [13]:
The average total displacement at 600 days - extrapolation of test data from 42 days test duration to 600
days, including initial and creep displacement - shall be less than the average displacement at ultimate
load of control anchors or less than 0,12”(3,05mm), whichever is less.
This means, HAS threaded rod fastenings with HIT-RE 500 are durable regarding creep behaviour.
A long-term test has been started in August 1999 in a concrete plate stored at Hilti Kaufering (semi-
industrial climate). The anchors have been direct exposed to sunlight and rain. During the test period the
base material temperatures varied between –15 till 35°C / 5 till 95°F.
It can be seen from the graphs on page 7 and 8 of this report: their is no change in anchor performance
over the already passed test duration of 20 months.
The 2 diagrams on page 8 show clearly their is also no change in the load-displacement behaviour
(stiffness) of the anchors over service life.
After the freeze/thaw test (conditions see page 5) the anchors are tested in a pull-out tension test.
The average tension test results of the freeze/thaw specimen must be at least 80 % of the average of the
control specimens at a variation coefficient of not more than 15%.
The test have shown HIT-RE 500 is not effected by freeze/thaw effects. The average tension test result of
the freeze/thaw specimen was 99% of the average of the control specimens at a variation coefficient of
6,5%. The total displacement of the anchors after the test cycles was approx. 1 mm (0,040”).
HIT-RE 500 fulfils the acceptance criteria defined in ICBO AC 58 [13]. This means the mortar can be used
for external applications in all type of climate condition – negligible, moderate and severe.
Based on climate conditions the selection of steel quality (galvanised, hot-dip galvanised, stainless steel,
high corrosion resistant stainless steel quality) is very important for the total durability of the fastenings.
Tests for analysing dynamic load behaviour of HIT-RE 500 with fastening element rebar have been started.
First tests with rebar ∅12mm at a cyclic load of 16 and 22 kN, corresponding to a bond strength amplitude
of 12 and 16 N/mm2 - which is quite high - passed 2 mio. cycles without failure.
This result shows that the cyclic load behaviour of HIT-RE 500 is mainly be influenced by the dynamic load
behaviour of rebars / fastening elements used.
Fastenings with HIT-RE 500 also passed the ICBO acceptance criteria [13] for seismic applications in
tension and shear.
HIT-RE 500 is mainly tested for application conditions relevant for rebar fastenings.
Based on assessment criteria the results of the individual tests, described in section 2.6 of this report,
are summarised below:
