About the Seminar:

UN’s Development Agenda for 2016-2030 i.e. “Transforming our World: the 2030 Agenda for
Sustainable Development” comprising 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 related
Targets have been adopted and signed by the Government of India in Sept 2015. NITI Aayog has been
assigned the role to oversee implementation by Ministries and to coordinate with States for the
achievement of developmental targets as enshrined in the SDGs.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are an ambitious commitment by world leaders, which set
out a universal and an unprecedented agenda which embraces economic, environmental and social
aspects of the wellbeing of societies.

India played a prominent role in the formulation of SDGs and much of the country’s National
Development Agenda is mirrored in the SDGs. However, with 17 Goals, 169 targets and the 306
national indicators, the SDGs might be difficult to grasp and understand. Defining and measuring
success coupled with availability of little data poses a challenge as well. In this context, the seminar
would focus on SDGs related to the social sectors including health and sanitation and environmental
goals, especially the climate change and their relevance in the Indian context.

Objectives:
The seminar proposes to bring together academicians, researchers, policymakers, practitioners and all
the stakeholders on one platform to deliberate about the Key issues, challenges, and strategies to
achieve Health and Environment goals under SDGs in the Indian Context

To assess the synergies and convergences between SDGs and existing government schemes/ programs
with special reference to the environment and health.
