Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

UDL is being addressed by giving the students the freedom to write down the facts that interest them the
most as well as giving them the freedom to pick their own videos. The videos range from handling anger to
how alcohol affects the brain. With this variety the students have multiple things to choose from.

Lesson idea implementation:

To start this lesson, I will begin by introducing the topic of mental and emotional health. They will do an
activity that will evaluate their basic understanding of what mental and emotional health is and what affects
it. I will do this by giving them a sticky note and having them write a characteristic of what they believe a
healthy mental and emotional person looks like. After that, I will have the students check out a laptop under

their name so that if anything inappropriate is looked up it can be tracked. Once they have it, they will log into
Discovery Ed and go to the health tab, then the mental health tab. From there they will fill out a chart that
consists of four different boxes. In each box they will write three things they learned from each video
regarding mental health. If I see that students are too advanced for this, I will have them research their own
websites for videos on mental and emotional health.
To conclude this lesson, they will all come up to the white board and write one thing that they learned
from the videos. This allows me to see that they did something as well as allows the class to learn something
form other videos. This also applies to the technology standard because they are exploring a website as well
as the health standard because they are accessing their own information and applying it to health. This entire
lesson will be completed in one 40-45 minute class period.

Reflective Practice:
I believe that this would affect student learning in a positive way by allowing them to do the research
themselves. I also believe that allowing students some freedom in the classroom is important in keeping
students engaged and creative. To extend this activity I would look for other instructional software places to
allow them to create their own presentation or interactive game.
