a. recall the four methods in solving quadratic equations;
b. appreciate the sum and product of roots of quadratic equation; and
c. determine the sum and product of the roots of quadratic equation using the
value of coefficient a, b, and c.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: The sum and the product of roots of quadratic equation
Reference: Mathematics 9 Learners Material, page 69-76
Material: Chalk, book and visual aids
Values Integration: Cooperation, activeness and attentiveness

III. PROCEDURE
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
A. Preparatory Activity
1. Greetings
Good morning, class! Good morning, ma’am

2. Prayer
Please stand up for a prayer ( The students will stand up and pray)

3. Checking of Attendance
(the teacher will check the
attendance)

4. Review
What did we discuss last meeting (the students will answer)
class? We discussed about the sum and the
product of roots of quadratic equation

Yes, very good

What are the four methods in solving (the students will answer)
quadratic equation? Factoring, completing the square,
extracting the square root and using
quadratic formula

B. Lesson Proper
a. Activity
Let’s divide the class into 2groups. (The students will count)
Count from 1 to 2.

Your task is to find the roots of (The students will listen)

quadratic equation using any method.
After finding the roots, find the sum
and the product of the roots.
Each group will be given different
quadratic equation.

Group 1: 2𝑥 2 + 8𝑥 − 10 = 0
Group 2: 𝑥 2 − 10𝑥 + 21 = 0

Each group will have one (The students will start answering)
representative to write their answer
on the board and another one for the
explanation of the answer. This
activity is good for seven minutes
only. Your time starts now!

b. Analysis
Okay class, time’s up! Settle down; go
back to your proper seats.

Let’s answer the equation of group 1. 2𝑥 2 + 8𝑥 − 10 = 0

a = 2, b = 8, c = −10
−𝑏 ± √𝑏 2 − 4𝑎𝑐
𝑥=
2𝑎
−(8) ± √82 − 4(2)(−10)
𝑥=
2(2)
−8 ± √64 + 80
𝑥=
4
−8 ± √144
𝑥=
4
−8 ± 12
𝑥=
4
−8 + 12 −8 − 12
𝑥1 = 𝑥2 =
4 4
4 −20
𝑥1 = 𝑥2 =
4 4
𝑥1 = 1 𝑥 2 = −5

Sum: 𝑥1 + 𝑥 2 = 1 + (−5) = −4
Product: (𝑥1 )(𝑥 2 ) = (1)(−5) = −5

Is the answer of group 1 correct? Yes, ma’am.

Yes it is! Now let’s proceed to group 2 𝑥 2 − 10𝑥 + 21 = 0

(𝑥 − 7)(𝑥 − 3) = 0
𝑥−7=0 𝑥−7=0
1
𝑥 =7 𝑥2 = 3
Sum: 𝑥1 + 𝑥 2 = 7 + 3 = 10
Product: (𝑥1 )(𝑥 2 ) = (7)(3) = 21

Is the answer of group 2 correct? Yes, ma’am.

Based on the activity, what do you (The students will answer)

think is our topic for today? The sum and the product of roots of the
(call a student name) quadratic equations.
Very good!

Today we’re going to talk about the

sum and product of the roots of
quadratic equation.

The formula in finding the sum of a (The students will listen)

quadratic equation is
−b
s=
a

The formula in finding the product of (The students will listen)

a quadratic equation is
c
p=
a

For example, we have

𝑥 2 − 7𝑥 + 12 = 0
Who can give me the sum and the
product of this equation? Expected answer from the student
(call a student name) 𝑥 2 − 7𝑥 + 12 = 0
a = 1, b = 7, c = 12
−b c
s= p=
a a
−7 12
= =
1 1
s = −7 p = 12

Very good!

c. Abstraction
Did you get it class? Yes, ma’am.

In determining the sum and the The students will answer

product of roots of the quadratic −b c
equation, what is the formula? s= p=
a a

Very good class

Are there any clarifications? None so far, ma’am.

d. Application
Answer the following for five minutes.
Find the sum and the product of roots
of quadratic equation
1. 6𝑥 2 + 12𝑥 − 18 = 0

Time’s up! Who wants to answer? (Expected answer of student)

(call a student name) 6𝑥 2 + 12𝑥 − 18 = 0
a = 6, b = 12, c = −18
−b c
s= p=
a a
−12 −18
= =
6 6
s = −2 p = −3

Very good!

2. 3𝑥 2 − 10𝑥 − 8 = 0

Time’s up! Who wants to answer? (Expected answer of student)

(call a student) 3𝑥 2 − 10𝑥 − 8 = 0
a = 3, b = −10, c = −8
−b c
s= p=
a a
−(−10) −8
= =
3 3
10 −8
s= p=
3 3

Very good!

IV. Evaluation
Find the sum and the product of the
roots of the following quadratic
equation
1.) 4𝑥 2 + 8𝑥 + 3 = 0
2.) 9𝑥 2 − 6𝑥 = 8
3.) 8𝑥 2 = 6𝑥 + 9
4.) 10𝑥 2 − 19𝑥 + 6 = 0
5.) 2𝑥 2 − 6𝑥 = 0

This activity is good for fifteen (The students will start answering)
minutes. Your time starts now.

V. Agreement
Study in advance on p. 77-80

Goodbye class! Goodbye and thank you, Ma’am Joan!
