INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Love in the cornhusks benefits from close reading and is a good example of implied but
not state events and feeling. That said, the story didn’t do much for us, it feels that the major plot
point (Amado leaving which starts the cascade of events which leaves Tinang in her sorry state) is
contrived. Why didn’t Amado just tell Tinang he would be going away for a while and to wait for
him?

Many students in schools are asked to look at this story through a feminist criticism point
of view and many readers make much of the snake. That’s not every interesting though, at least
for me, the story does fine with the close reading and formal. No need to get fancy with God and
biblical allusion and feminist.

WHY DO YOU CHOOSE THIS STUDY

As a female character and in my feminist point of view, Aida Rivera –Ford was a woman
with a great talent, for she was one of our outstanding writers in English. In her story “Love in the
Cornhusk” the title itself indicates the frontier setting, which is the undeveloped sphere of the
knowledge. Now , I am to criticize and analyze her work through feminism approach, the woman
in love in the cornhusk, Tinang who have reached at least grade school was a woman of
consciousness who always thought of what others will say about her. She is a kind hearted and
loving mother.

Through my reading it is assault here the tolerance of being a woman. The story is easy to
understand because it uses simple words. Its style is average. Love in the Cornhusk was related to
some instances and hardship in life .Feminism continuously flourishes its many forms and it will
continue to offer society in literal studies a fruitful and exciting set of intellectual problems. Most
feminist do not away with such gender type categories altogether.

“Love in the Cornhusks” is one of five well-crafted stories for which Rivera-Ford won the
Jules & Avery Hopwood Prize in Michigan. In 1955, the Sunday Chronicle’s This Week magazine
featured the prize-winning story, with illustrations by Rod Dayao. From N.V.M. Gonzalez to
Epifanio San Juan, critics were one in hailing the story with uncommon praise, citing its masterful
subtlety but also its earnest vision—a rare case of art prevailing upon all creeds and manners of
persuasion. Two years later, Rivera-Ford released her five stories under the title now and at the
Hour and Other Short Stories (1957).

Literary Analysis of chosen works

 Authors purpose of writing

The purpose of the author is mainly about the consequences of the decision we
made in the past. These decision could possibly affect us in the present, and probably the

us, we should move on because we are incapable of going back to the rest.

 Theme that authors wants the readers to understand after reading

The theme of the story is the choices or decisions you are making even though you
don’t know what will happen in the future but you have to face the reality of life and learn

VIII

Analysis of Literary works using these approaches

 Formalistic Approach
Overall, Tinang is strong and nurturing women. Tinang was afraid about the society
opinions about pregnant women without the baby’s father. Because of this, she married the
bogobo even though she disdained him. If may be rude on tinangs part but the person
implied that tinang’s an illiterate.

 Feminism Approach

In her story “Love in the Cornhusks” the title itself indicates the frontier Setting,
Which is the undeveloped sphere of knowledge. The woman in love in the Cornhusks,
Tinang who have reach at least grade school was a woman of consciousness, who always
thought of what others will say about her. She is a kind- hearted and loving mother.

The story is somehow related to Antigone, because there are focuses about the story
points of woman. There’s also flashback in the story where in Tinang remember the past
days during her teenage days.

CONCLUSION

When tinang got realize she still loves Amado even after she got married to her husband
.Reading the letter is the moment when Tinang’s feeling for Amado reawaken. To any is the first
thing she does, then, she tries to recollect her first experiences with him.A snake comes in scene
sneaking towards her baby. As she analyzed it, she see that snake is the representation of such
discovery and poses threat towards her relationship with her family.

Why the snake is going to her baby? It is because that snakes if Tinang lets herself be taken
by her emotions ,can destroy her relationship with her Bagobo husband, Indeed, the snake is about
to attack her son for he is the symbol and the fruit of the love that she and her husband shared
together.

In the end of the story, Tinang chooses to accept the consequences in the decision, she
made in her life. First, she Stands up from her sitting position, telling that life must go on; then she
embraced the baby telling that she has to embrace her own consequences and specially the people
whom God has given to her; next, she prayed and beg for the almighty not to punish her after
thinking other things outside from her married life, saying that she realizes that her thought are
wrong; Afterwards she check the skin of the body searching for some marks showing the possible
