LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 9

Date: July 22-23, 2019
Time: 3:00 P.M. – 4:00 P.M
Section: 9-Obedience
I.OBJECTIVES

A. Content Standards
The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of quadratic equations,
inequalities and functions, and rational algebraic equations.

B. Performance Standards
The learner is able to investigate thoroughly mathematical relationships in various
situations, formulate real – life problems involving quadratic equations, inequalities and
functions, and rational algebraic equations and solve them using a variety of strategies.

C. Learning Competencies
At the end of 60 – minute period, 80% of the students should be able to described the
relationship between the coefficients and the roots of a quadratic equation, derived the
quadratic equation given the (a) roots or (b) the sum and product of the roots, and
derived the quadratic equation given the roots or the sum and product of the roots

II. CONTENT
1. Subject Matter : The Sum and the Product of Roots of Quadratic Equations
2. References : Mathematics 9 Learner’s Material by Merden L. Bryant et. al
pages 66-76
3. Methods : Discussion, Drill
4. Materials : Visual aids, whiteboard, marker, and worksheet,

III. PROCEDURE:

A. Routine
 Opening Prayer
 Checking of Attendance
B. Lesson Proper
a. Motivation
 Let’s do addition and multiplication!
 Perform the indicated operation:
1. 8 + 15=
2. -9 + -15=
3. (16) (3)=
4. (-7) (-15)=
5. ((15)(2) + 13)=
b. Presentation of the Lesson
 The game will be used as an introduction to present the sum and the product of
roots of quadratic equation.
 Present the new lesson by obtaining the sum and product of the roots as expressed in
the quadratic formula:
−𝑏 ± √𝑏 2 − 4𝑎𝑐
𝑥=
2𝑎

 Sum:

 Product:
 If the roots are given, the quadratic equation can be derived as follows:
𝑥 2 − (𝑟1 + 𝑟2) 𝑥 + (𝑟1 • 𝑟2 ) = 0 or (𝑥 − 𝑟1 )(𝑥 − 𝑟2) = 0
 If the roots are given, the quadratic equation can be derived as follows:
𝑥 2 − (𝑟1 + 𝑟2) 𝑥 + (𝑟1 • 𝑟2 ) = 0 or (𝑥 − 𝑟1 )(𝑥 − 𝑟2) = 0

c. Fixing Skills
 Class Activity
Find the sum and product of the roots of the given quadratic equation.
1. 𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 + 3 = 0
2. 𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 − 9 = 0
3. 𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 − 21 = 0
4. 𝑥 2 + 7𝑥 − 18 = 0
5. 2𝑥 2 + 8𝑥 − 10 = 0

Find a quadratic equation for the given roots.

1. 9 and -4
2. 2 and -7
3. -8 and 5
4. -6 and 12
5. -3 and 13

d. Generalization
In this lesson the students learned to find the sum and the product of roots of
quadratic equation.

IV. EVALUATION
Find the sum and product of the given quadratic equation:
1. 3𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 − 6 = 0
2. 4𝑥 2 − 6𝑥 + 15 = 0
Find a quadratic equation for the given roots.
3. 5 and -14
4. 9 and 2
5. -4 and -8

V. ASSIGNMENT

 Find the sum and product of roots of the quadratic equation given below.
x² -5x + 6 =0
x² - 6 =0
3x² + x + 1 =0
3x² +7x = 2x-5
x² + 5x + 1 = 3x² + 6

VI. REFLECTION 9 - Obedience

A. No. of learners who earned 80% in the evaluation

B. No. of learners who require the additional activities for remediation
who scored below 80%
C. Did the remedial lessons work? No. of learners who have caught up
with the lessons.
D. No.of learners who continue to require remediation
E. Which of my teaching strategies worked well? Why did these work?
F. What difficulties did I encounter which my principal or supervisor can
help me solve?
G. What innovation or localized materials did I use/ discover which I wish
to share with other teachers?
