ALGEBRA
1. Give the algebraic expression for the following.

a) 16 added to p b) x added to sum of y and 8 ( R )

Solution: a) 16 + p b) x + ( y + 8 )

2. Write the algebraic expressions for the following. (R)

a) 9 added to the product of -5 and x

b) 4 times p taken away from half of q

Solution: a) -5x + 9

q
b) - 4p

3. Sruthi is 18 years younger than her mother. What is sruthi’s age interms of her
mother’s age. (U)

Solution: Sruthi’s mother’s age = x years

Sruthi is 18 years younger than her mother

 Sruthi’s age = Her mother’s age – 18 years

= x years – 18 years

= ( x – 18 ) years

Hence, sruthi’s age is (x – 18 ) years, where x is her mother’s age.

4. Solve: 7
2

x
Solution: Given 7
2

Multiplying both sides of the equation by 2

x
 2 72
2

 x =14

Hence, x = 14 is the solution of the given equation.

Check: Substituting x = 14 in the given equation, we get

14
L.H.S =  7 = R.H.S

5. Write the following as an equation.

Eight less than a number p is 15. (U)

Solution: Eight less than a number p = p – 8

Given: Eight less than a number p = 15

 The equation is p – 8 = 15.

6. The length of a room is 4 metres more than 2 times the breadth of the room.
What is the length if the breadth is x metres? ( A )

Solution: Breadth of the room = x metres

Length of the room = 2 times breadth + 4 metres

= ( 2 × x ) metres + 4 metres

= ( 2x + 4 ) metres

Hence, the length of the room is ( 2x + 4 ) metres.

7. Find two numbers such that one of them exceeds the other by 12 and their
sum is 64. (A)

Solution: Let the smaller number be x

Then, the larger number = ( x + 12)

Sum of the two numbers = 64 (Given)

 x + ( x + 12 ) = 64
 2x + 12 = 64

 2x = 64 – 12 = 52

 2x = 52

52
 x= = 26
2

 x + 12 = 26 + 12 = 38

Hence, the required numbers are 26 and 38.

8. Mohan is 3 times as old as his son. After 12 years, he will be twice as old as his
son. Find his son’s present age. (A)

Solution: Present ages

Let Mohan’s son’s present age be x years

Then Mohan’s present age is 3x years

After 12 years

Mohan’s son’s age = ( x + 12 ) years

Mohan’s age = ( 3x + 12) years

Given, after 12 years Mohan’s age = 2 ( son’s age )

 3x + 12 = 2 ( x + 12)

 3x + 12 = 2x + 24

 3x – 2x = 24 – 12

 2x = 12

X=6

Hence, the present age of Mohan’s son is 6 years.

9. 18 years ago, the age of Anish aunt was 3 times the age of Anish. If, his aunt is
57 years old now, how old is Anish now? ( H )

Solution: Step 1
We know that the current age of Anish's aunt is 57 years. Therefore, his aunt's
age, 18 years ago

= 57 - 18

= 39 years.

Step 2

It is given that, 18 years ago Anishi's age was 3 times her aunt's age. Therefore,

aunt's age 39
Anish's age 18 years ago = =
3 3

= 13 years.

Step 3

So, Anish’s current age = 13 + 18 = 31 years

10. The number of hours left in the day is half the number of hours already
passed. How many hours are left in the day? (H)

Solution:

Step 1

1
According to the question number of hours left in the day = × Number of
2
hours already passed

Step 2

Let the number of hours already passed be x

Step 3

x
So, the number of hours left in the day =
2

Step 4

We know that the total number of hours in a day = 24

x
So, x + = 24
2
3x
= 24
2

24  2
X= = 16
3

Step 5

16
Therefore, the number of hours left in the day = = 8 hours.
