THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Gay is a term that primarily refers to a homosexual person or the trait of being

homosexual. The term was originally used to mean "carefree", "happy", or "bright

and showy". The term is use as a reference to homosexuality may date as early

as the late 19th century, but its use gradually increased in the 20th century. In

modern English gay has come to be used as an adjective, and as a noun,

Referring to the people, especially to gay males, and the practices and cultures

associated with homosexuality. By the end of the 20th century, the word gay was

recommended by major LGBTQ groups and style guides to describe people

attracted to members of the same sex. There is no such thing as “a gay.” Gay is

an adjective, and needs a noun to follow it; gay man, gay woman, gay people. To

refer to people by a single attribute is often considered rude or belittling..

In one version, homosexuality actually does provide a genetic advantage,

in the form of, say, a gay uncle who helps with the kids. In particular, he helps them

survive long enough to pass their genes on to the next generation, and by virtue

of an uncle's genetic connection to his nieces and nephews, some of their kids

might be genetically more likely to be gay too.

Over the past generation, sexual minorities particularly, gay person have

gained population in the Philippines. Gay group found their way in social media

and already accepted by netizen. People know that Gay is not a mere one. We

can communicate to them easily but gay is still a puzzle to everyone, some people

fight for their unknown identity. They want to belong to a community in which they

will be accepted by netizen. Some of gay’s showed their talents in media. One of

the reason why people enjoying their company is because they bring laughter to

people. As a netizen gay is not new to us, everybody know that we have our own

personality and that is acceptable to each other. But how about gay people. They

have different habits that only gay will understand. That acceptance of gay people

is also acceptance of the nature they have. As a citizen it is important that to accept

them properly, everyone should be open minded and understand gay, let us

respect and be good to them. Because they are just people and have a good

personalities. At about the same time, a new, pejorative use became prevalent in

some parts of the world. Among younger speakers, the word has a meaning

ranging from rubbish to a light-hearted mockery or equivalent to weak. In this use,

the word rarely means "homosexual", as it is often used, for example, to refer to

an inanimate object or abstract concept of which one disapproves. The extent to

which these usages still retain connotations of homosexuality has been debated

and harshly criticized. The researchers aim to conduct what are the coping

mechanism of gays in our society.

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL GAS DEPARTMENT

Background of the study

The most common terms for homosexual people are gay for males, though gay

is also use to refer generally to both homosexual males. The number of people

who identify as gay and the proportion of people who have same sexual

experiences are difficult for researchers to estimate reliably for a variety of

reasons, including many gay people not openly identifying as such due to hetero

sexist discrimination.

If you are gay, you might be experiencing hostility from those who know you.

You may suffer rejection by loved ones, discrimination at work, or bullying at

school. Take steps to protect yourself from violence or harassment and precarity.

Find allies among gay people, friends, and family. Learn your legal protectors, and

know how to find shelter and help out in the world. Finally, love yourself, and

resilience. Issues of discrimination against homosexuals were brought forward in

society over one hundred years ago. Homosexual relationships and acts have

been admired, as well as condemned, throughout recorded history, depending on

the form they took and the culture in which they occurred. The essence of being

gay is being sexually attracted to someone of the same sex. It does not particularly

matter whether or not you act on this attraction; there are celibate gay people, just

as there are celibate straight people.

Statement of the problem

The study aims to determine the coping mechanism of the gays as a member

of the society. Specific questions that the researcher aims to answer the following:

1. What is the Socio Demographic profile of the respondents:

1.1 Gender

1.2 Age

2. Coping mechanism variables of the gays

2.1 Physical appearance

2.2 Bullying

3. What are the awareness on coping mechanism?

3.1 Gender Difference

Theoretical framework

Tachell P. (2013), cited that a new, pejorative use became prevalent

in some parts of the world. Among younger speakers, the word has a meaning

ranging from derision equivalent to rubbish or stupid to a light-hearted mockery or

ridicule equivalent to weak, unmanly, or lame. In this use, the word rarely means

"homosexual", as it is often used, for example, to refer to an inanimate object or

abstract concept of which one disapproves. The extent to which these usages still

13
COMPUTER COLLEGE CALAMBA CAMPUS

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL GAS DEPARTMENT

retain connotations of homosexuality has been debated and harshly criticized. A

new study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine has found a link between

homosexuality and female fertility. The mothers and maternal aunts of gay men

have "increased fecundity compared with corresponding maternal female relatives

of heterosexual men," the authors of the study write.

This study, which the authors note was based on a small sample and "would

benefit from a larger replication," supports the so-called "balancing selection

hypothesis." The gay gene or genes are thought to exist on the X chromosome,

and "increase the reproductive value" of the female relatives. In other words, it

makes the women more attractive to men, allowing them to produce more

offspring. So while the 'gay gene' may not be passed down directly, it will survive

over the course of many generations.

Sykes (2013), according to his opinion If the existence of the 'gay gene' is

ever proven conclusively, it is unlikely to have much of an impact on the beliefs of

some people who reject homosexuality as a "lifestyle." After all, some of those

people simply reject science. Indeed, there are some people who want to bury their

heads in the sand, and that is an issue that impacts the field of genetics in general,

gay gene or no gay gene. Not only are the maternal relatives of gay men more

attractive, more fertile and subject to fewer complications during pregnancy, the

study also found these women are extroverts and generally happier.

The researchers figured out that gays can cope even though they have

experiencing discrimination. They maintain a positive sense of self in the face of

chronic negative feedback base in attitudes and increased sexual risk behavior in

this population.

Scope and limitations of the study

The study is limited only on the evaluation and validation of the coping

mechanism of the gay as a member of the society as perceived by the selected

Grade 11 Humss Students of AMA Calamba Campus during the school year 2017-

2018. This study limits only to 30 students of AMA Calamba Campus.

Significance of the study

16

Levine, Nick I. (January 10, 2018),” said that everyone feels isolated at

some point, but for members of the LGBTQ community, that loneliness hits

harder.Loneliness doesn't discriminate. Few people are lucky enough to make it

through life without feeling isolated at some point. But there are particular reasons

why loneliness is prevalent among the LGBTQ community. Part of realizing you're

gay, or bi, or trans, or non-binary, or anything other than gender and heterosexual

is accepting you’re different and somewhat separated from the majority. Many

young LGBTQ people hide their authentic selves from friends, family, and

classmates before they come out, which is often an incredibly isolating

experience. This sense of isolation can be hard to shake off, and it's also easily

triggered. Wherever you live in the world, however big the city, the LGBTQ

community is a disparate one featuring myriad different tribes. It isn't always easy

to find your niche. Hitting the clubs can be a euphoric experience, but it doesn't

necessarily lead to long-term satisfaction. Madonna once sang, "I found myself in

crowded rooms, feeling so alone," a sentiment many LGBTQ people can relate to.

Indeed, artist Richard Dodwell has recently published an anthology book, Not Here,

dedicated to documenting queer loneliness in all its forms”

Chen, Shane(June 11th 2015), “ cited that the economic, another reason

behind the Spanish sexual xenophobia about the San gleyes - though I myself

haven’t really attempted to explain it here-may also be linked to the self-confessed

fear of many friars that their efforts at converting the natives were constantly being

undermined by the Chinese. Not a few Spanish missionaries pointed to the

Chinese as the culprits behind the backsliding in faith of natives who “returned to

their old ways” every time the Spanish frayles-who were supposed to guarantee

their salvation at all cost-weren’t looking. Second, containment theory may be most

logically invoked in relation to inversion, the dominant discourse of homosexuality

in our society at the present time. In many ways.”

According to Morgan l.(2011),” Gay means you like to be a girl, because

you like men and you like a dong shoved up your turd cutter, and so gay and

transgender are basically the same for many Pinoys. But can you blame them,

when the gay community itself flaunts Miss Gay pageants and other drag shows

that serve to create a hilarious caricature of the “gay culture”? It’s partly our fault.

Maybe we should stop calling it Miss Gay because it’s a misnomer. Maybe we

should call it Miss Drag or Miss Trans or I don’t know. It’s not a gay pageant per

se. It’s a pageant for the gender non-conforming queer folks – drag queens,

crossdressers, and trans pinays. They are fabulous, and we love the flamboyance,

but many of these people are not gay, and many gay men don’t do drag shows.”

Martin, A.C. (June 13,2013),” Welcome to the Philippines, the most “gay-

friendly” nation in Asia or so they say.One of the country’s most famous celebrities

is a loud, effeminate, cross-dressing gay man whose humor mostly honed in

comedy bars where insulting someone is considered hilarious has successfully

crossed over to mainstream television. He reinforces the stereotype that gay men

have men in the country’s entertainment industry: the joker who makes fun of

everyone and himself, the always delivers the punch line, who was cast for comic

relief. Their brand of comedy makes them tolerated in our country because they

are entertaining tolerated, but not accepted.

Gay women, on the other hand, aren’t afford as much visibility in showbiz

as gay men. In the Philippines, when you say the word “lesbian”, an image of short

haired, cross-an exaggerated swagger comes to mind. The vernacular word for it

is “tomboy” masculine-acting homosexual human which is this country”s only idea

of what lesbians are.

Similarly, homosexual relationships in the Philippines tend to adhere to

traditional gender roles; one must act as the man, and other, the woman.”

Garcia, Neil C.(2013),”I enumerated the three most important questions a

Philippine-based gay theory should address: cultural incongruity, gender

oppression, and the class struggle. After undertaking this inquiry into the writings

and history of Philippine gay culture in the last thirty years, I can nearly presume

that the “answers” to each of these broad concerns should involve the genealogy
COMPUTER COLLEGE CALAMBA CAMPUS

of sexuality in our history as a colonized people, a revaluation of our present-day

concepts of maleness and femaleness, and a theoretical elaboration of the semi-

feudal, capitalist class structures which have guaranteed the oppression of

homosexuals in terms of occupational pursuit and symbolic relations. In the first

part of this work, some of these conclusions were brought to bear on the very

history that had countenanced them.

Although short and woefully incomplete, I therefore believe this study has

adequately, if provisionally, answered the most basic requirements of a tentative

gay theory in the Philippines. There are still other insights this study has yielded,

and they have to do with: 1) how the demonization of same-sexual activity is as

old as the Catholic Church’s history in the islands, 2) how inversion can be an

instance of containment, and 3) what some of the special problems of gay

historiography in a neocolonial context are.”

According to Phelan, John Leddy Phelan,(2013), “The Spanish observers

were vituperative Sinophobes who hated the Chinese as intensely as they were

dependent upon them for certain economic services. Sinophobia may be

unconsciously responsible for inventing the charge that the Chinese introduced

sodomy to the Filipinos.

Phelan concedes, however, that “the incidence of homosexuality increased

COMPUTER COLLEGE CALAMBA CAMPUS

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL GAS DEPARTMENT

among the Filipinos as a result of the coming of the Chinese.” While this may have

been the case and the de facto economic ascendancy of the Chinese may have

indeed been the underlying reason for this Sinophobia Phelan nonetheless fails to

see the distinction between sodomy and homosexual activity. As I have earlier

attempted to clarify in the section on precolonial gender-crossing, sodomy as a

general term for “unnatural acts” did not preclude the many heterosexual acts and

“methods” which for the friars were not within the realm of the “ordinary.” Hence,

even this concession of Phelan’s may yet be misleading, since those many

different acts that might be called sodomitic could only have been around so much

earlier than the Spanish conquest. In fact, all the other accounts on the existence

of penis pins, licentiousness and lack of chastity among the pre-Conquista indios

and indias seem to indicate this to have been the case. Needless to say, it is almost

impossible to prove that the influx of the Chinese merchants into the Philippines

caused the many practices of sodomy to become any more or less widespread

than they had already been.

Edgar T.( February 2017),”Schools should be safe places for everyone. But

in the Philippines, students who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT)

too often find that their schooling experience is marred by bullying, discrimination,

lack of access to LGBT-related information, and in some cases, physical or sexual

assault. These abuses can cause deep and lasting harm and curtail students’ right

to education, protected under Philippine and international law.

COMPUTER COLLEGE CALAMBA CAMPUS

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL GAS DEPARTMENT

In recent years, lawmakers and school administrators in the Philippines

have recognized that bullying of LGBT youth is a serious problem, and designed

interventions to address it. In 2012, the Department of Education (DepEd), which

oversees primary and secondary schools, enacted a Child Protection Policy

designed to address bullying and discrimination in schools, including on the basis

of sexual orientation and gender identity. The following year, Congress passed the

Anti-Bullying Law of 2013, with implementing rules and regulations that enumerate

sexual orientation and gender identity as prohibited grounds for bullying and

harassment. The adoption of these policies sends a strong signal that bullying and

discrimination are unacceptable and should not be tolerated in educational

institutions.

Parke & Buriel, (2013), Socialization has been defined as a process through

which individuals learn to change their standards, attitudes, and behaviors to

conform to those regarded as desirable and appropriate in any particular society.

socialization that children learn how to do gender in interaction and how to avoid

sanctions for doing it wrong. Drawing from a feminist, social constructionist

approach, the current study examined the processes through which

lesbian/gay/bisexual (LGB) parents constructed and socialized gender and

sexuality with their children, the contents of the messages parents conveyed to

children about gender and sexual orientation, and parents’ perceptions of the

influence of external sociocultural systems on children’s learning of gender and

sexuality. Processes of socialization were explored using a tripartite model of

parental socialization roles parents as interactors with children, parents as direct

instructors or educators, and parents as providers of opportunity. In line with this,

Martin (2010) postulate that it is through socialization, management, negotiation,

and resistance of a person how to operate in gendered structures.

Harry T. (2011),”However, people often argue that this is “only a phase,” and

when these teens go to co-ed colleges, they would then become straight and

restore balance to the world. It only becomes a serious issue when their children

continue to date persons of the same sex even after they have been exposed to

heteronormative society. It is only then that the issue of sexuality becomes real.

Bobby A.S.(2015),”The old gender dichotomy needs to rest. The average

should understand modern concepts of sexual identities or at least leave people

with non-conventional identities alone. After all, if you’re a straight Christian, it’s

not you who’s going to face God in the afterlife and be judged for homosexuality.

Peter Jones Dela Cruz,(2014),”Pinoys in general just tolerate, not accept,

gays. There is a huge difference between tolerance and acceptance. I don’t see

complete acceptance at all. I only see tolerance of a certain amount of the “gay

culture.” So what kind of gayness do Pinoys tolerate? Filipinos like gay folks who
COMPUTER COLLEGE CALAMBA CAMPUS

live by their established stereotypes. Vice Ganda-esque sort of gayness, that’s

what people like. If you’re gay, you have to be funny and you should work as a

make-up artist or a fashion designer. If you work in the military or play with a sports

team, you’re going to create a lot of fuss, so just stay in the closet if you do.

John K.(2013),”The strange thing about the Philippines is the seeming

disconnect within its evolving culture. We’re taking large leaps into progress, but

we keep old customs–especially ones that are either useless or ridiculous. I’m not

a fan of customs and tradition. I want this country to evolve and embrace change.

Enough with overrated family values. Enough with Christian values. Enough with

old religious concepts of morality and stuff. We have to grow as a community, not

as discrete packets of supposedly Christian families. We have to learn how to

respect individual differences and accept that idea that we can be a solid

community that encourages a beautiful diversity.

Ace R.(2013),”There is still a ridiculous number of people, even within the

LGBT community, who think that gay men want to be girls and that transgender

people are gay. I don’t blame them. The word transgender is like a new word for

Filipinos. The first time you heard it was probably just a few years ago. The problem

is when you explain to people what transgender is, they refuse to accept the

meaning. Instead, they insist their own bias about “men wearing makeup and
COMPUTER COLLEGE CALAMBA CAMPUS

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL GAS DEPARTMENT

skirts,” that they’re still men, or that Aiza Seguerra is still a woman. Filipinos are

preoccupied with sex organs. So if you have a penis, you’re supposed to be a man.

According to Fr. Dan Vicente Cancino of CBCP (2016),”Many Pinoys think gay

men spread STDs and HIV,look at the forums about HIV/AIDS. You’ll be

astounded at the magnitude of ignorance of arrogant anti-gay people who think

that HIV is a gay disease, a sort of plague nature designed to wipe out gay men–

because stigmatizing HIV is better than showing concern and giving assistance.

Fr. Dan Vicente Cancino of CBCP implied in a recent article about STD cases in

the country that distorted concepts of sexuality and erosion of family values may

be a factor in the rise of HIV cases in the country. It’s a wild assumption that needs

more study. Influential figures like him can manipulate the thinking of the less than

informed members of the population, propagating wrong notions about sexually

transmitted infections, like HIV.

Darren A. (2014),”First, this study has made it clear to me that the damning

attitude of the Catholic Church in the Philippines toward homosexuality may have

initially been conflated with (xenophobic) issues of race. In the archival component

of this work, I came across not a few accounts by the Spanish colonial

administration that blamed sodomy on the largely bachelor Chinese community

just outside the walled city. This early in the history of the Christianization of our

peoples, it therefore became apparent that demonization based on and

compounded by racial conflicts had played and would continue to play a major part

in shaping our country’s dominant religious attitude in regard to sodomitic sex.

COMPUTER COLLEGE CALAMBA CAMPUS

Warren N.(2013),” The issue of independence also comes into play. Due to the

closeness to one’s family, most Filipinos do not move out of the house until they

are married, and even that is not an assurance. The children run the risk of getting

thrown out of the house if they admit to being gay so they would rather stay inside

the closet — at least they’re not homeless. It’s no wonder successful “coming out”

stories in this country are few and far between. One, because families would really

rather not talk about it, and two, because if they do get around to talking about it,

not all families are open to accepting that their child is gay. My god, what would

the neighbors think? What would our church mates think? We’d go straight to hell

just by breathing the same air.Religious, conservative, patriarchal and traditional,

these words are often used to describe Philippine society. These are words that

have been the bane of homosexuals in the Philippines whose best hope is to be

tolerated but not accepted. And yet, Filipinos currently find themselves in the midst

of two forces pulling them in opposite directions.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The statistical tool will use to determine the result of data gathered in the

study were Solvin’s Formula, Frequency and Percentage and Weighted Mean.

These tools helped the researchers to have accurate data, to get the validity of the

result and in order to attain the objectives of the study.

Frequency and Percentage will use in determining and describing the

distribution and profile features of the respondents in each category. The

researchers use percentage to represent the quantities of the table regarding the

largest or the smallest quantity. In this study the number of respondents in each

category was divided by the total respondents to get the percent equivalent.

Weighted mean will use to identify the interpretation of each statement. In

this method, it show’s the weight of data as will compare to other data and guided

the researchers to the highest point as well as the lowest point obtained.

The researchers use the weighted mean for the question because this deals

with the interpretation of the scored that will be gained by the respondents.

Schools should be safe places for everyone. But in the Philippines, students

who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) too often find that their

schooling experience is marred by bullying, discrimination, lack of access to LGBT

related information, and in some cases, physical or sexual assault. These abuses

can cause deep and lasting harm and curtail students’ right to education, protected

under Philippine and international law.

In recent years, lawmakers and school administrators in the Philippines have

recognized that bullying of LGBT youth is a serious problem, and designed

interventions to address it.
