boys high school teams along
with the junior high boys.
With only one gym at Wiley
it makes for long days for
Dunning and his assistant
coaches, Greg Spitzer and Mi-
chelle Wallace.
The intense but enthusiastic
Dunning welcomed 14 boys
out for this year’s season.
Wiley graduated two sen-
iors from a team that went
6-14 last season. Despite the
subpar record, the Panthers
were competitive and lost sev-
eral close games along the
way. The season ended for Wi-
ley with a 51-48 loss to Spring-
field in the first-round of the
Class 1A District 3 tourna-
ment.
Wiley returns three starters
from a year ago in 6-2 senior
Zac Perdue, 6-0 senior Taylor
Wilson, and 6-0 sophomore
Cody Wallace.
Dunning is looking at sen-

Eads as he has assisted both
the girls and boys programs
over the last couple of years.
McLoud and his coaching
staff welcomed 18 boys out
this year, several more than in
years past.
“We have more numbers
out than in years past, so that
is a good first step for us,” he
said.
Last season, Eads squeaked
past McClave, 49-47, to claim
the District 2 championship.
The following week, Eads
competed in the Southern Re-
gional or Sweet 16 at Otero
Junior College in La Junta
where the Eagles kept their
season alive with a 33-32 victo-
ry over Sierra Grande.
In the Class 1A state tourna-
ment held in Pueblo, Eads fell
in the quarterfinals to eventual
state runner-up Otis, 46-33.

this year.
The Lamar boys begin with
a tough road schedule as they
won’t be home until after
Christmas.
On the bright side, 45 boys
reported out for basketball,
showing that there is genuine
interest in the program.
The Savages only return
two starters in senior Aaron
Westhoff and sophomore
Branson Jennings. Doren-
kamp did have a host of re-
turning players that saw con-
siderable action last year in

Choat, Cory Fassiotto, and
Jarded Smartt. Junior Isiah
Martinez saw time with the

Young team hopes experience,

hard work pays dividends

Last year was another tough

season for a young Granada
High School girls basketball
team.
After failing to win a game
two years ago, the Lady Bob-
cats could only muster one
win last season.
It’s been a test of patience
for second year head coach
Carlos Huerta but he feels the
day will come when the hard
work his girls are putting in

program around.
“I thought we played well
defensively last year, but our
downfall was not being able to
score and putting the ball in
the hoop,” said Huerta. “We’re
definitely going to need some-
body to pick up the scoring.”
If it’s any consolation, Gra-

Last year, Huerta had only
one senior on the roster. Once
again, he will have only one
senior on the team in guard

The Holly High School girls

basketball team is coming off a
.500 season a year ago as the
Lady Wildcats compiled an
11-11 record.
In the Class 1A District 3 tour-
nament, Holly won its first-
round game against Springfield,
50-34, but lost in the semifinals
to eventual state champion Kim,
58-23. In the third place game of
the district tournament to stay
alive for the regional playoffs,
the Lady Wildcats saw their sea-
son game to an end with a
tough 38-34 loss to South Baca.
“After losing a lot to gradua-
tion the year before, I was pretty
happy with the season we had
last year,” said Holly coach Bry-
an Weimer. “I’m looking for-
ward to the experience we
gained last year to come
through this year.”

team but also lost the services of

freshman Haley Martinez, who
transferred to Las Animas.
Still, Weimer returns a nucle-

Coach Bob Schaller has

been with the Springfield boys
basketball program in a vari-
ety of roles.
He served several years as
an assistant with a very suc-
cessful coach and now athletic
director Richard Hargrove.
Schaller is now in his sec-
ond stint as the Longhorns
head coach.
The Longhorns are coming
off a 14-9 record a year ago
and Schaller would like noth-
ing more than to take the next
step.
With 24 boys out for basket-
ball, Schaller has lots of faces
to pick from. Four seniors will
be the foundation that he
hopes the Longhorns will
build from.
Matt Self, a 6-2 senior, was a
full time starter a year ago.

Wildcats look to get over the hump

For the past two seasons, the

Holly High School boys basket-
ball team headed in the post-sea-
son as the top team heading in
the District 3 tournament.
However, the Wildcats laid an
egg according to their coach
Shannon Rushton.
“It’s been two years in a row
that we’ve went into the district
tournament as the No. 1 seed
and laid an egg twice in the
semifinals,” said Rushton. “It’s
like facing a 1,000 pound gorilla
that’s still in the room that you
can’t get past. We want to
change that.”
After receiving a bye in the
first round of the district tourna-
ment, Holly squared off against
a Springfield team they had
played three times and beaten
twice.

Rushton graduated the serv-
ices of some key seniors includ-
ing their big man in the middle

“We lost some good seniors
last year,” said the Holly coach.
“but we return a solid group of
kids that I think is going to give
us an overall better team con-
cept. It’s going to be a different
team this year”
Rushton has 19 players out in-
cluding six seniors, three jun-
iors, three sophomores, and sev-
en freshmen.
He will be counting a senior-
oriented team to carry the Wild-
cats over the hump.

nandez; and 6-1 junior guard

“Last year we would go into
games with Saul Gomez, Chris
Kirmer, and Michael Salgado to
score a lot of points for us,” ex-
plained Rushton. “This year we
don’t know where our scorers
are going to come from. We
know we’ve got guys who can
step up. Stetson was a good
scorer for us last year and
shoots the ball well from the pe-
rimeter. We’re going to rely on
his offense again this year.”

put on the mat a year ago.
The team will still be young
but Coach Bill Forgey hopes
the experience his wrestlers
gained last year will pay divi-
dends this season.
“We’ve got a real young
team again this year with a lot
of sophomores,” said Forgey.
“And for the first time, we’ll
have a 103 pounder. I don’t
know if we’ve had one since
I’ve been here. The only
weight we might not fill is at
215 pounds.”
Forgey has 15 out for the
team this year including four
state qualifiers.
Sophomore Terrell Stafford
returns as the lone state placer
after he finished sixth at 160
pounds in the Class 1A state
tournament.

After heavy losses to gradu-

ation in 2009, the McClave
boys basketball team faced a
rebuilding year under new
head coach Shawn Randel.
To Randel’s surprise, a
young McClave team made
some big strides last season.
McClave lost some close
games in the post season as
they fell to Eads, 49-47, in the
District 2 championship game
and then saw the season end
with a tough 55-47 setback to
Walsh in the Southern Region-
al. The Cardinals ended the
year with a 9-14 record.
Randel returns all five start-
ers from last year and the Car-
dinals head into a new season
with high expectations.
“Last year was fun to coach
and watch the kids grow,” said
Randel. “We thought it was
going to be a rebuilding year
but they exceeded some ex-
pectations. We lost some
heartbreaking games at the
end but I think the kids
learned from it. So, it was a
fun year for us.”
Three seniors will carry the
load for the Cardinals behind

er, a 5-11 forward.

The Wiley High School

girls basketball team en-
joyed a taste of success at
the Class 1A state tourna-
ment last year.
The Lady Panthers ad-
vanced to the state champi-
onship game and brought
home the second place tro-
phy. It was the highest finish
ever in the school’s history
for a Wiley girls basketball
team.
The Lady Panthers were
seeded as the No. 6 team in
the state bracket and sur-
prised several teams on the
way to that runner-up finish.
In the first round, Wiley
upset No. 3 seed Fleming,
44-43. In the semifinals, the
Lady Panthers faced No. 7
seed Briggsdale, a team that
had knocked off No. 2 seed
McClave, 45-43, in the first
round.
Wiley came through with
another big victory as they
defeated Briggsdale, 37-34.
In the state championship
game, Wiley would face a fa-
miliar opponent in the Kim
Lady Mustangs, the No. 1
seed.
The two teams had played
against each other two times
with Kim winning those two
games, 61-21, and 52-24.
In the state finals, Wiley
played Kim tough before fall-
ing, 51-32. The Lady Pan-
thers capped the season with
a 22-5 record. Besides the
three losses to Kim, Wiley
lost twice to McClave.
The Lady Panthers lost
two key seniors from that
team, but the good news for
Wiley fans is that head coach
Brian Dunning returns a
good part of that nucleus for
this year’s team.
Dunning, who also dou-
bles as the Wiley boys head
coach, returns Tanner Camp-
bell, a 5-7 senior guard; Tay-
lin Spitzer, a 6-0 junior post;
and Jodi States, a 5-5 senior
guard from last year’s start-
ing unit.
The trio will be joined by
Teri Johnsen, a 5-9 sopho-
more; Erica Ragland, a 5-4
