Pruning Bigleaf Hydrangeas bloom on ‘old wood’ – the

Tips: previous season’s growth. This means that flowers

for next year are being produced on this year’s plant.
If you cut back the plants in fall or winter, you will
cut off all the flowers for the next year. The best time
to prune these plants is right after flowering, so
the plant has time to grow before fall. Gardeners in
cold climates may want to protect these plants over
winter to keep the flower buds from being frozen.

Tip: Hydrangea Coloration

The flower color of Bigleaf Hydrangeas
(Hydrangea macrophylla) may change color
depending upon the soil pH. It is not the pH
itself that changes the color, but the availability
of aluminum that directs the color. Aluminum
has greater availability in acid soils so the
blooms turn blue. If the soil is basic [alkaline],
the aluminum is tied up and flowers tend to be
pink. The degree of color change is dependent
upon the amount of aluminum available and the
variety itself. Aluminum sulfate treatments can be
used to get blue flowers, and horticultural lime
treatments are used to get pink flowers.
