Subjects:
(You are reminded that you will be rewarded for orderly and coherent presentation of
materilal, use of appropriate style and general accuracy of spelling, punctuation and
grammar.)
(a) You had gone on a trekking expedition with a group of friends. As night closed in,
you realised that you were separated from the group. Describe you initial feelings
and the place where you got lost. How did you spend the night alone before you
were reunited with your group?
After an overblown month of the exams I and my friends planned a trip to Ladakh. The
purpose of our visit was to experience trekking expedition in Stok Kangri, India’s longest
trekking route with my friends. We were a group of 5 and all were very excited to
experience our very first expedition. After checking into our hotel we all got freshen up
and prepared ourselves for the climb, packed the essentials like water, tent, first aid, and
some food. Later in the evening we had begun with the trek. We were tired after covering
a long stretch and decided to take a break as the sun was setting down. We decided to
light a bonfire and continue walking the next day. I volunteered to get the woods and
dried leaf whereas others were setting up the tent. While collecting the things as I moved
along I realized that I forgot my way and got separated from the group. I tried finding
them shouting their names but no response came. As the day went by the sky grew darker
and the forest seemed denser as it was. I was afraid of it and that I was alone in a jungle

1
where there could be dangerous animals. My initial feelings were scared and hopeless but
then I gathered my courage and strength and decided to do something about it. I tried to
light up a wood with the old technique I learnt in the school camp training and looked
around me. The place where I got lost was a land full of mangroves with a small pond
along with it. The place was beautiful but still the thought of me being separated from the
group terrified me. I lighted up the place and took some sandwich out of my bag that I
had packed and ate it I was starving and very tired from all the work. I was assuming the
consequences in case I can never find my friends again and get lost here in the forest but
then I discarded those thought and decided to continue looking for my friends in the
morning as it was unsafe doing it in night. While thinking this as my first adventure and
an experience I feel asleep. It must have been 5am when my friends were shouting my
name and followed the smoke where I lit the fire. I told them all that happened and I
finally felt relaxed and happy after seeing them. We continued our trekking again and
now together and with more confidence. It was indeed the very first

(b) It is easy to advise others not to worry, but difficult for oneself to follow the same.
Narrate an experience which made you realise the truth of this statement.
It is always easy to advise our friends and relatives not to worry about things. But
becomes difficult at times to follow the same. It is easy to tell others not to worry, but
less easy to take such advice on ourselves’, I find that the above saying is variably true. It
is easy to utter “don’t worry” to someone in trouble, but when I am the one facing the
problem, I cannot stop worrying about it.
When it comes to examination, I worry a great deal too. I worry about little things like
how many pens I should take into the examination hall, did I came to the right
examination hall, my student card and my pencil. I always felt that all my pens might run
dry or my student card would go missing, but my worries were always for nothing. I am
the one who gives wonderful advice. I am able to console and calm them down quite
effectively, but as for myself I go on worrying and fidgeting. I cannot follow my advice.
The first time I had to sit for an oral examination. I was all tensed up a day before the
actual examination. Understandably my friends were also worrying about how they
should behave in front of the examiners. They were planning strategy and techniques. I
acted smart, as I was confident about the whole matter. I even gave them some important
hints and told them to stop worrying. My mind was in a state of great disturbance. All
through the night before the examination day, my thoughts were fixed on the
examination. I felt like a tape recorder inside my head was playing. I did not sleep well
that night. My dreams were filled with monstrous examiners and failed examinations.
Such was my anxiety.

Again my worries were for nothing. I tell my friends that examinations are not worth
worrying about. I tell myself the same things too, but yet at the back of my mind, I
wonder how well I will do in the examinations.

(c) ‘The best things in life come free’. Write for or against the statement.
“The best things in life come free” this proverb has a deep hidden meaning. It relates to
all the things that money cannot buy. When we are born on this Earth, we are blessed
with a loving and caring family. This family consisting of our parents, grandparents,
uncles, aunts and siblings is a blessing; we laugh, cry, eat, share things and shower
unconditional love. The friendship we share, the sleep we get, good health or the laugher
we live with is best in life and comes for free. It’s priceless; nothing can be valued
against it.
However rich an individual might grow, he cannot buy these relations or the true essence
of happiness and peace. Universally he can buy the entire materiality thing but cannot
buy someone’s feeling and emotions.
Happiness comes as a result of appreciating smaller things in life instead of crying for
bigger things in order to gain happiness. People can buy car, house, big companies but
that might be just a temporary investment with all their money. What they can’t buy is
trust, loyalty and love within their sphere of life.

Mother nature also gives us air, water, and good life for free, for which we should be
thankful and instead of wasting is misusing it thinking it free and I abundance we should
cherish, protect our nature. That’s the most beautiful thing that comes for free and we
should be responsible with handling and using the resources.

People who always run after money end up being alone. There should be a perfect
balance between things that are available for free and for the things we pay a price so we
don’t leave any one of it. The best things are the one which we can feel, the one which
defies ourselves and our character and which comes for free to let’s make the most of
what the life and nature gives us.

(d) Photographs
Photographs are not just a paper of faces or sceneries, Its much more than that. It has
hidden stories, emotions ad value that one can cherish for life. They can look at the
pictures and remember the good times they had or laugh at something funny they
remember. It keeps people and memory alive in our mind and heart of the moments and
the people we loved. The art of taking pictures ponder to its artistic value. Photographs
have a deep and direct impact than some modern art maybe because sometimes its
personal and we can relate to it. There are many types’ pictures which are classified into
categories. Like one can is ‘time capture’ which is solely taken to capture any moment or
event at a particular point of time. The second can be ‘deeper meaning’ which holds an

3
ability to change someone’s mood or reaction. Both of the images have their own
importance and essence.
People collect photographs in albums, create their own photo wall, gift it to someone far
away or just put it in a frame so they can look at them every day. There might be several
pictures but one essence which is common is about the feelings emotions and experience
that we cherished in that moment.
It can be framed and preserved for years and centuries for people from the next
generation to see and cherish it

(e) In order to be successful, one should rely on oneself and not expect others to help.
Express your views on the given statement.
“People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but
when the darkness sets in their true beauty is revealed only if there is light from
within.” — Elisabeth Kübler-Ross
It’s definitely true that in order to be successful one should rely on one self and not
expect others to help. Expectations can lead to disappointment therefore it’s always
important to believe in yourself and your instincts and continue with the hard work with
complete independence and determination. Taking help from others or expecting
someone to do our work will only lead to one being lazy, dependent and less focused. It’s
important to improve and increase your skills and education. Like the famous proverb,
hard work is the key to success and we cannot share our hard work with anyone else in
any manner thus very important to completely believe in you and work towards the goal.
One of the most foundational beliefs of this life is that we can become better with time.
The more we believe in it the more we try expand our horizon and push our self to
actually become best. We will gain knowledge and acquire experience that will make us a
better person and eventually successful in life.
They are plenty factors that will contribute to our success but the biggest factor will be
how much of we achieve will mostly depend on how much we believe in your abilities. In
this world of rationally and intolerance it might be difficult for people to trust one another
we’ll never know who will turn us down and hurt us in order to take a step forward. That’s
why we say to be full sufficient, efficient and reliant and not depend on others for any type
of work.

(f) Write an original short story begging with the following words:

it ………..

Question 4

Read the passage given below and answer the question (a), (b) and (c) that follow:
At the Literary Society’s meeting. Isola read out the letter written to her Granny
Pheen, when she was but a little girl. They were from a very kind man a
complete stranger. Isola told us how these letters came to be written.
When Granny Pheen was nine year old, her cat died. Heartbroken, sitting in the
middle of the road, she was sobbing her heart out.
A carriage, driving far too fast, came within a whisker of running her down. A
very big man in dark coat with a fur collar, jumped out, leaned over Pheen, and
asked if he could help her. Granny Pheen said she was beyond help. Muffin, her
cat, was dead.
The man said, ‘Of course, Muffin’s not dead .You do know cats have nine lives,
don’t you? When Pheen said yes, the man said, ‘Well, I happen to know your
Muffin was only on her third life, so she has six lives left. Pheen asked how he
knew. He said he always knew – cat would often appear in his mind and chat
with him. Well, not in words, of course, but in pictures.
He sat down on the road beside her and told her to keep still – very still. He
would see if Muffin wanted to visit him. They sat in silence for several minutes,
when suddenly the man grabbed Pheen’s hand.
“Ah – yes! There she is! She’s being born this minute! In a mansion – in France,
there’s a little boy petting her, he’s going to call her Solange. This has Great
Spirit, great verve – I can tell already! She is going to have a long, venturesome
life.’
Granny Pheen was so rapt by Muffin’s new fate that she stopped crying. The
man said he would visit Solange every so often and find out how she was faring.
He asked for granny Pheen’s name and the name of the farm where she lived,
got back into the carriage, and left.
Absurd as all this sounds, Granny Pheen did receive eight long letters. Isola then
read them out. They were all about Muffin’s life as the French cat Solange. She
was, apparently, something of a feline musketeer. She was no idle cat, lolling
about on cushions, lapping up cream- she lived through one wild adventure after

9
another – the only cat ever to be awarded the red rosette of the Legion of
Honour.
What a story this man had made up for Pheen – lively, witty, and full of drama
and suspense. We were enchanted, speechless at the reading. When it was over
(and much applauded). I asked Isola if I could see the letters, and she handed
them to me.

The writer had signed his letters with a grand flourish:

VERY TRULY YOURS.
O.F, O’F, W.W.
It was highly possible that Isola had inherited eight letters written by Oscar Wilde, for
who else could have had such a preposterous name as Oscar Fingal O’ Flahertie
Adapted from:The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society-By Mary Ann
Shaffer& Annie Barrows
(a) (i)Given below are four words and phrase. Find the words which have a similar
meaning in the passage.
(1) Adventurous [4]
(2) Cat-like
(3) Appreciated
(4) Received something on someone’s death.

(1) venturesome
(2) feline
(3) applauded
(4) inherited
(ii) For each of the words given below, write a sentence of at least ten words using the same
word unchanged in form, but with a different meaning from that which it carries in the
passage: [4]
(1) Kind (line 2)
(2) Mind (line 13)
(3) Still (line 15)
(4) Sounds (line)

(1) Some strangers can be very kind to us.

(2) There was a lot going inside of Granny Pheen’s mind.
(3) After the storm everything became still
(4) “She sounds worried”, kunal thought to himself.

10
(b) Answer the following questions in your own words as briefly as possible:

(i) Where did Isola get the letters from to read at the Literary Society’s meeting?
[2]
Isola probably got the letters from Oscar Wilde himself who acted as a stranger to
Granny Pheen when she was heartbroken and helped her.

(ii) Who consoled Granny Pheen when she was heart-broken? What did he say
about Muffin’s lives? [2]
A very big man in dark coat with a fur collar consoled Granny Pheen when she was
heart-broken and asked if he could help her. The man said about Muffin’s Life that
she might not be dead as cats have nine life and he knows that Muffin was in her third
life and she has 6 lives left.

(iii) What did the man say when Granny Pheen asked him how he knew about cat’s
lives?[2]
When Granny Pheen inquired the man’s knowledge about the cat’s life he said he
always knew as the cat would often appear in his mind and chat with him Not in
words but through pictures.

(iv) According to the man, what was Muffin’s new fate? [3]
According to the man Muffin has taken birth in France and there’s a little boy petting
her, he’s going to call her Solange. She is going to have a long, venturesome life. She
was no idle cat, lolling about on cushions; lapping up cream instead she lived through
one wild adventure after another. She was the only cat ever to be awarded the red
rosette of the Legion of Honor.

(c) In not more than 100 words summaries why the eight letters were a treasure to
Granny Pheen. (Paragraphs 2 to 10). Failure to keep within the word limit will be
penalised. You will be required to write the summary in the form of a connected
passage in about 100 words.
The eight letters were a treasure to Granny Pheen because it was from the stranger, likely
to be Oscar Wilde who consoled Pheen and helped her when she was heartbroken after
her beloved cat Muffin’s death. He told her about the life of a cat who lives nine times
and that he can talk to cats. The man said to her that he would see if Muffin wanted to
visit him and Muffin agreed to meet the man in dreams. He saw how muffin is living an
adventurous and great-spirited life in France as Solange. As the man promised he would
have visited Solange often to see how she was faring and living her life. The men wrote
her life and their conversations in the letter and posted them to Granny Pheen which she
treasured for life.
