Alpha Xi Delta choose children and football

Alpha Xi Delta holds a lifelong
commitment to helping children in need.
The national philanthropic focus is Alpha
Xi Delta Chooses Children. The women’s
service and philanthropic efforts all
concentrate around fundraising for
children and families in need in the local
community or with effect on Alpha Xi
Delta family and friends.
Jacob Gurreri was five years old when
he choked in the school lunchroom and
went into a coma. While Jacob was at the
Hershey Medical Center, the Gurreri
family stayed at the Ronald McDonald
House until he passed away just weeks
after in 2005.
Jacob and his family were close
friends of Alpha Xi Delta sister Caitlin
Reagan.
In result of the loss, Caitlin and the
Gurreri family worked to help all the
children and families that are staying in
the Ronald McDonald House with a toy
drive during the holiday season.
Jacob’s story inspired the chapter for
their fall philanthropy “Fuzzie Football”.
Twenty-two teams participated in this
flag football event to raise a total of
$6,500 for the Gurreri family’s annual
toy drive this past season.

Delta held a rose sale to raise money
for the Trimble Elementary School
students of Athens, Ohio. The sale
was held outside Baker University
Student Center. Many students and
professors were more than willing to
purchase flowers because the
proceeds were going to raise money
for field trips for the local
elementary students. Sophomore
Anne Cummings of Alpha Xi
Delta said, “ The roses were not only
a perfect gift for a professor, but
were also a gift for the elementary
that my money was going to a good
cause.” Another Alpha Xi Sister,
Heather Taylor added, “ I am an
education major, and I love seeing
proceeds going to children in need, I
cant wait to present the money we
raised to these more than deserving
students.” At the end of the sale
Alpha Xi Delta raised $162.14. Alpha
Xi Delta is continuing to raise more
money for the Trimble Elementary
Students throughout the rest of
winter quarter to add to the money

Freezin’ for a reason at the Polar Bear Plunge
Team Alpha Xi Delta takes the jump at Strouds Run for Phi Kappa Theta’s philanthropy
This past Saturday, Feb. 14, members
of Ohio University and the Athens
community roughed the cold to raise
money for Special Olympics athletes
from Ohio. This event, the Polar Bear
Plunge, is one of the Special Olympics’
biggest fundraisers each year.
The second annual Polar Bear Plunge
at OU, held at Dow Lake at Strouds
Run, was titled “Freezin’ for a Reason”
and hosted by the fraternity Phi Kappa
Theta and the OU Police Department.
“Freezin’ for a Reason” was the first of
eight Polar Bear Plunges in Ohio.
The event is structured like a walk-a-
thon, where teams raise money prior to
the event in order to have one or more
members “plunge” into the water.
Participants at OU needed to raise a
minimum of $50 to plunge. Teams met

though it was really, really cold, it was a
lot of fun and we all felt great knowing
we raised money for such a great
cause."
The event also featured a costume
contest. Participants wore costumes
ranging from the Ninja Turtles to Cupid
to a hillbilly. Along with the funniest
costume, prizes were awarded to the F U ZZIES T H AT JU MPED: 3
top fundraiser and top fundraising team.

On Friday February 13th, Alpha

party at the Alpha Xi Delta house.
Each of the classes donated
different items to hold this
delightfully decorated party. Some
of the sisters arrived early at the
house to help embellish our house
with a sweet heart theme. Upon
arrival to the party one would
