 GENERAL DESCRIPTION
CH 58 CLOSED HEAD TUBING TONG

SERVICE
This manual describes the installation, operation, and maintenance of the Oil Country CH 58
hydraulic power tubing tong.

The Oil Country Model CH 58 tubing tong is designed to run tubulars from 1-5/16” to 7” in
diameter. With a 36” handle, the CH 58-1 tong can produce continuous torque to 8,210 ft.
lbs. (11131 nm) at 2,500 PSI (170 bar). The CH 58-2 can produce 11,474 ft. lbs. (15557 nm)
at 2,500 PSI (170 bar).

The CH 58 is a closed head tong, all gear driven with a positive-grip system.

The tong is driven by a gear-type, fixed displacement hydraulic motor to a Planet gear system
with high and low shifting that provides proper torque ratio to power gear train.

HYDRAULIC DRIVE SYSTEM

The hydraulic throttle handle controls the speed and torque of the unit. Pushing or pulling the
long handle will rotate the gear train in reverse or forward for making up tubing or breaking
out tubing with jaw system in place. Pushing or pulling short handle will operate the lift
cylinder to raise or lower tong.

GEAR TRAIN
The complete tong gear train consists of:
1. Reversible hydraulic motor
2. A 2-speed transmission
3. Rotary idler gear
4. Rotary gear

The gear ratios are 51.5:1 (low) and 10.7:1 (high)

Handle on transmission operates selection of high gear or low gear.

JAW SYSTEM (See ILL-044, Page 20)

5. The Model CH 58 tong uses a gear operated, five jaw system moving
simultaneously in and out and radially.
6. For breaking out joints, place jaws on pins with letter “B” up.
7. For making up joints, place jaws on pins with letter “M” up.
8. Inserts are reversible and should be turned around when they become worn or
replaced if fails to bring sharp teeth in contact with pipe.

INSTALLING WITH SPRING CUSHIONED HYDRAULIC LIFT

1. Move tong to convenient position near well.
2. Lift hydraulic cylinder, set in position on tong, attach with pins, and connect
hydraulic line from control valve to cylinder.
3. Lift tong with 5/8” diameter (minimum) steel cable approximately 3 feet above
well-head. (Cylinder has 6 foot travel.) The hydraulic lift is ready to operate by
means of controls mounted on the same side of tong as tong controls. The line
supporting the tong should be located so the tong will hang over the center of
the well.
4. Attach anchor bracket on right rear corner of rig approximately 4 feet from
ground. Additional anchor brackets are available for use of tong on more than
one rig.
5. Connect torque arm to rear of tong and anchor bracket on rig. Then adjust so
that tong will be at right angle to torque arm. (See ILL- 037, page 8 and ILL-
038, page 9) Tong should then have about 4 feet vertical travel. Lower tong
over tubing.
6. Attach hoses from hydraulic power source. Be sure all self-sealing couplings are
tight before starting hydraulic power source.
7. To level tong, use the leveling screw on hanger (ref.-7, See ILL- 45, page 24). If
tong is not leveling it will cause excessive wear to tong inserts.

JAW INSTALLATION

1. Select the proper jaw size using jaw chart, page 21.

WARNING: DISCONNECT ALL POWER TO TONG BEFORE REMOVING OR

INSTALLING JAW SYSTEM.

2. Lift guide ring open which is on a hinge swing. (See ILL- 043, page 19)

3. Remove jaw retainer ring.

4. For breaking out joints, place jaws on pins with letter “B” up with the long side
of jaw against gear teeth. (See ILL- 039, page 10)

5. For making up joints, place jaws on pins with letter “M” up with the long side of
jaw against gear teeth. (See ILL- 039, page 10)
6. Inserts are reversible and should be turned around when they become worn or
replace if reversing fails to bring sharp teeth in contact with pipe.

 SETTING HYDRAULICS FOR PROPER OPERATION
1. Check all hose connections before engaging hydraulic power source.
2. Engage hydraulic power source.
3. Adjust tong relief valve. The relief valve in the tongs operates in makeup
direction only.

a. A. Turn relief valve adjusting screw to left to reduce pressure

until tong reduces speed.

b. B. Place tong on tubing to be made up and gradually increase

the pressure to reach makeup required. Check manufacturers’
recommended makeup torque for type of joint being made up.

c. C. Lock relief valve adjusting screw and make up second joint

checking torque where tong stalls.

d. D. Make minor corrections as necessary until torque readings

are satisfactory.

e. E. If tong grips and slips, increase pressure on drag plus by

screwing in drag screws bottom brake housing, item 12, See
ILL- 006 page 26. Adjust screws evenly. (See ILL- 006, item
17, page 26)
NOTE: It is not necessary to change makeup torque to break-out. Tong
operates at system pressure by breakout. A relief valve - set at 2200 PSI - in
power unit tank, controls system pressure. PSI should not exceed 2500 PSI.

4. If pump fails to pick up oil after hoses have been connected or if tong runs in
surges, screw out relief valve all the way and let pressure back to tank. Circulate
to remove air. Screw in pressure screw until tong operates. Repeat if
necessary.

 MAINTENANCE

DAILY INSPECTION
1. Inspect and lubricate crucial points (see ILL-042, page 16) prior to every job and
at least once per every operating day thereafter.
2. Inspect the unit and accessories for obvious damage, evidenced of hydraulic
leaks, etc.
3. Inspect jaw dies for wear on teeth. Change the inserts, if necessary.
4. Inspect jaws for free rotation and vertical movement on pins. Lubricate as
described under “Jaw Lubrication” page 15. Begin rotation and check that jaws
move smoothly into gripping position and back again. If necessary, tighten each
brake screw (ref.17, See ILL- 006, page 27) equally until jaw movement is
normal.

MONTHLY MAINTENANCE
1. Inspect Bull gear and guide rollers for wear or breakage and replace if
necessary.
2. Inspect jaws for wear and replace if necessary.
3. Inspect the Bull gear and internal gears for wear and adequate lubrication.
4. Check the oil level in the transmission.
5. Inspect jaw carrier for looseness in the brake housing, (NOTE: loosen brake
plugs to check looseness). Remove carrier and check for adequate grease and
worn or galled surfaces.
6. Check back-up jaws as described in 2 and 5 above.

 LUBRICATION

GREASE FITTINGS (See ILL - 042, page 16)

TYPE GREASE:

A. Unocal 76 Mutiplex Red Grease 2 (Meets NLGI, GC-LB Specifications)

B. Cold Weather - Chevron RPM Artic Grease NLGI-1

Use these unless otherwise noted.

Quantities
(7) grease fittings are located on the case top at each roller and gear shaft:
(1) Grease Fitting on side of the brake housing
(5) Grease Fittings on the back-up jaw shafts
(1) Grease Fitting on the back-up swivel block.
(2) Grease Fitting on the back-up case.

At the beginning of each job, use a grease gun to grease the grease fittings.

LUBRICATION
1. Jaw Lubrication
I. Remove jaws and liberally grease jaw gear, jaw bore, and inside bull gear on
both the tong and the back-up.
2. Case Gear Lubrication
I. Remove the grease plug on the top cover and add open gear type grease while
rotating tong.
CAUTION: DO NOT PUT ANY OBJECT INTO OR ALLOW ANY OBJECT TO FALL
INTO THE GREASE PORT. FOREIGN OBJECTS CAN DAMAGE THE GEAR TRAIN.
3. Transmission Oil
I. The oil level should reach the plug located above the motor adapter.
4. Valve Linkage Lubrication
I. Grease the valve handle linkage pins with grease.
5. Gears
6. Bearing and Jaws
7. Gear Box Oil
I. Shell Spirax Heavy Duty Gear Oil 85W/140.
STORAGE

For extended storage use paint brush and brush grease completely over tong and back-up.
Cover and store inside out of weather.
